The creative outgrowth of an after-school program for orphaned and vulnerable children in Limpopo, South Africa, Ndlovu is now a youth portal to a career in music. The Ndlovu Youth Choir's extraordinary appearances four years ago on the popular TV show America's Got Talent made them the first choir in the history of that show to reach the finals. Their soulful sets won them millions of new fans around the world. On the strength of those AGT performances, they signed a recording contract with SYCO and Sony Music, and their first album debuted at number one on iTunes... Since then, the choir has completed two European tours, sold out every public concert and performed on numerous local and international television and radio shows. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the choir's musical public service messages for the UN's World Health Organization offered hope and inspiration. They also joined many of the world's top musical performers on a digital stage during Global Citizens' "One World: Together at Home" virtual concert.  Along with its founder and musical director Ralf Schmitt, the group is currently in the middle of a month-long Eastern US concert tour, and during today's stop in Baltimore, they'll also be singing up a storm at 7:30 tonight at the Keystone Korner Jazz Club at 1350 Lancaster Street. In 1995 vertrekt Hugo Tempelman, net afgestudeerd als tropenarts en getrouwd per Jeep op huwelijksreis naar de armste sloppenwijken van Zuid-Afrika. Om er nooit meer weg te gaan.    28 jaar later kijk ik met hem terug op wat hij in de periode allemaal heeft bereikt. Op alle avonturen en de mooie en lelijke verhalen die hij heeft meegemaakt. Hij komt er al snel achter dat voorkomen beter werkt dan genezen en breidt zijn activiteiten uit met allerhande preventie programma's variërend van voedselzekerheid tot veiligheid en van onderwijs tot zelfontplooiing. Zijn Ndlovu care group is inmiddels de grootste werkgever in het gebied geworden, maar heeft - nog veel belangrijker - honderdduizenden ziekenhuis opnames en doden voorkomen. Zijn preventieprogramma's zijn ongekend succesvol. Een kinderkoor schopte het tot de finale van America's Got Talent en reist nu als als sterattractie de wereld rond.   Ook op medisch gebied heeft Hugo veel bereikt. Hij ontwikkelde een vernieuwende aanpak tegen AIDS - een heel groot probleem in Zuid-Afrika - die na veel tegenwerking door de regering uiteindelijk werd geaccepteerd en er nu voor heeft gezorgd dat AIDS beheersbaar is. Hij ontdekte er ook de Omicron variant van COVID-19 en was de eerste die suggereerde dat de snelle verspreiding van deze variant ons misschien wel een uitweg uit de COVID crisis kon bieden. Maar ook bij deze boodschap duurde het even voordat de rest van de medische wereld het doorhad.   In de serre van mijn eigen huis had ik een inspirerend talentgesprek met Hugo met als concrete aanleiding zijn lage score op de TMA Drijfveer Orde & Structuur.  Het talent wat daar bij hoort is CREATIEF. En dat hij dat talent volop heeft ingezet wordt wel duidelijk in het talentgesprek. Creatief in zijn oplossingsgerichtheid en als leider. Maar ook het talent om plannen en ideeën makkelijk aan te passen aan de realiteit van de ongeorganiseerde chaos in de townships.   Dit is het TMA talentsignaal van CREATIEF: “Gedreven worden door de grote lijnen en flexibiliteit. Heeft sterke creatieve en innovatieve kracht. Neiging tot slordigheid, minder oog voor detail. Kan beter met hectische, chaotische en rommelige omgeving omgaan. Hecht weinig waarde aan een planmatige en gestructureerde aanpak; “goes with the flow”. Flexibel in werkwijze. "Harmonious," one of the largest nighttime spectaculars ever created for a Disney park. While the technology, including pyrotechnics, choreographed moving fountains, lighting, massive LED panels, and media are impressive, it's the music that pulls the story together. Rodney Trudgeon's guest on this week's edition of People of Note is the multi-award winning South African flautist Wouter Kellerman, who is also the winner of a Grammy Award. Not only is Wouter a flautist, but he is also a producer and composer and part of his mission is to work with and uplift children. His 2018 collaboration with the Ndlovu Youth Choir became an internet sensation.

Social media has been abuzz since YESTERDAY when Limpopo-based Ndlovu Youth Choir had been preparing for its final performance at the finals of America's Got Talent. The group took to its facebook page moments before their performance to thank all South Africans and the world for the support they have received in the competition. Veteran television talk show host, Felicia Mabuza-Suttle had also paid the group a special visit to wish them well.
