EPISODE #425-- We commemorate the 2024 Olympics with the post-9/11 feel good sports drama, MIRACLE, which tells the story of the rag tag team that beat the Soviet Union and won the gold for hockey in 1980. And, let me tell you, folks, there's more run-on sentences where that came from! On the back end, we got a ton of stone-cold cinema classics (in color!). We talk APOCALYPSE NOW (1978) (in 70mm!), as well as THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (1943) and BLACK NARCISSUS (1947) at the Academy Museum here in LA, and, finally, LA CONFIDENTIAL, 1998's perfect marriage of James Ellroy pulp and classic Hollywood glitz. We have lots of fond memories of Woodford Reserve and the memories started years ago. A visit to the distillery, a cocktail in their bar (or made at home) or just a neat pour of this infamous bourbon has plenty to offer. Some iconic master distillers have made this incredible brand one of Australia's favourite premium bourbons. While there are plenty of great bottles in their range, the main offering is a great pour. Just in time for the height of the figure skating season, Amanda and Patrick are here to talk about 2016's Yuri!!! On Ice, the critically acclaimed sports anime about the world of professional figure skating and the blossoming of queer love! That's right, you read that correctly: this is an anime about queer love and if you don't agree, we would like to know what anime you are watching… Anyway… join this week's hosts as they discuss how this is not just one of the best sports anime ever made, but one of the best anime to ever come out of Japan. Just ask Amanda who watched it five times back-to-back! Amanda proceeds to yell about her favorite feral skate, Yuri Plisetsky, while Patrick prompts a discussion on the absolutely banger of an opening credits song. They discuss the importance of the very real romantic relationship between Yuri Katsuki and his coach and idol, Russian legend Viktor Nikiforov, and the lack of subtlety in it despite claims to the contrary. Patrick talks about the impact this anime has had on real life Olympic-level professional figure skating, including use of the music from the anime in competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Amanda and Patrick also talk about the broader cast of characters–from Kazakhstan's Otabek Altin to Thailand's Phichit Chulanot–while Patrick talks about just how talented they all are in the context of how the Grand Prix of Figure Skating is conducted in the real world (with only a little bit about how Adam Rippon was robbed of an individual medal at the 2018 Olympics). So come and join Amanda and Patrick as we talk about the highs and lows of figure skating (real and animated), queer love, and the beauty of Yuri!!! On Ice!

In this episode, Natasha forces Jessica to watch the pilot episode of Yuri!!! On Ice and delves deep into the world of anime. This leads to a discussion of how early a person can expect to retire, if your coach/sister should want to fuck your celebrity crush, and if a dog really would live this long. (Seriously, we talk about dogs' life spans for a little too long. Also, figure skaters' life spans. It's a morbid episode.) And let's take a poll -- if you listen to Natasha's spoiler, is it weirder that Viktor shows up FULLY NUDE to meet Yuri or that he asks if Yuri WANTS A PHOTO WITH HIM given the ~situtation~ at hand? Will this mystery make Jessica want to watch the entirety of this lovely little figure skating anime? Or will Jessica's win streak continue to be higher? Listen in and find out. Neil and his photo series have been covered by international media outlets, such as NBC’s The Today Show, The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan Japan, and more. You can check out Neil’s work on Instagram: @neilochka https://www.instagram.com/neilochka/ In the main part of the show, Valérie and Marco discuss ideas on how to find inspiration and approach photo assignments and projects. Join us as Brooke Gillespie-Trout and I review three different romance books. A hockey second chance romance, ON ICE by Trisha Harley McCarthy, a sensual erotic short, CLASS IS IN SESSION: ANA'S SEX EDUCATION: LESSON ONE by D.E. Love, and a reverse harem romance, BONNIE'S GAME; A REVERSE ROMANCE NOVEL by Lawrence Hall. All three are definitely worth the read! Five Hearts from me! On Ice, A Hockey Romance Zoe Simmons receives a text on her wedding day. Her fiancé called off the wedding. No explanation and he is soon traded to another hockey team, the Detroit Steels. She is devastated and has an emotional breakdown. After a few months she returns to her lonely life. Numb and withdrawn, she throws herself into her work as an assistant to general manager of the NHL team The San Jose Otters. Fast forward three years, The Otters are contenders for the Stanley Cup that include a shocking trade, Killian "Ki" Connery. The man who left her at the altar in humiliation and shame. Another blow comes when her father, Jed Simmons, negotiated the trade of her former fiancé without telling her. How will she be able to endure being around the man her heart yearns for but her mind rebels against? Not to mention the scandal that is about to break opening up her private life to further scrutiny by the media? Killian "Ki" Connery The woman he loves jilted him at the altar and he is banished to Detroit to play for The Steels. The former star and captain of The Otters is crushed by the betrayal of his love he's never gotten over. He survives through sheer will power and playing hockey while fighting the underlying demons plaguing him. Jesse Ward comes into his life and they become America's Sweethearts of the media. Little does Ki know the part Jesse played in his breakup with his true love Zoe. Class Is In Session: Ana's Sex Education: Lesson One Rodrigo worked hard to get straight A's, but now he needs to ace the one class he's been dreading. Will Anabella be able to help him with Sex Education? At eighteen, in his senior year, the nerdy Rodrigo must face his greatest fear, girls. It should be easy. Most students take sex education as freshmen, surely he could figure it out. There was just one problem. He must write a paper to get an A. The books he needs are missing from the school library. Anabella, the librarian, is young, vivacious, and sexy beyond words. Her rich New York executive boyfriend travels too much. She's lonely and her needs aren't being met. The confused student who stands before her, struggling to make eye contact as he stammers on about the missing books, will do nicely. She has a plan. Rodrigo is about to get a dream education. Bonnie's Game (The Bonnie Series Book 1) It's hard enough being a hardworking teacher, coach, and professional cheerleader. But when Bonnie Russell comes home after a long day and finds her boyfriend's face buried in that videogame, the one that takes up all his time and leaves none of it for her, with his hot friends watching him, she's had enough. Bonnie does what any woman would do. She unplugs it, thinking that would be the end of things. And it would be if the game didn't suck her and everyone in the room into it. Now, to return to the real world, Bonnie will have to go on the most dangerous adventure of her life, deal with the strong sexual charge that she has with the men that accompany her, and pass the test of a supernatural being - or stay locked in the game forever. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mahogany-says/support
