And Happy Mother's Day to all of our awesome moms out there! We need to talk about what is in the water. Mainly pools, hot tubs, rivers, creeks, lakes, oceans...okay, so all of it. I am specifically bringing to your attention the many icky microbes that can infect you if you are not careful to prevent them while swimming and while on vacation. Many of these (campylobacter, E. coli, Giardia, etc) simply cause gastrointestinal illness...though these can be deadly in severe cases especially those younger than five years of age, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity. There are other's however that can cause deadly pneumonia in just the right circumstances and necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis. People have lost limbs thanks to such microbes as Vibrio and other horrid bacteria lurking in these aquatic environments. Lastly, I want to talk about one of my greatest fears but also one of my favorite topics to discuss: Naegleria fowleri...the brain eating amoeba. This nasty little amoebas, if allowed, can make their way up the nose, and all the way into the brain where they will quickly start eating away and destroying tissue. It is usually always fatal and only a handful of people around the world have survived. Like Vibrio, this is thankfully a rare occurrence. Still, I would avoid getting warmer fresh water up your nose...or using tap water for your Neti pots...it could literally come back to bite you...in the brain. That was lame, I know. For as long as we've been reviewing beers, Craig has struggled with perceiving the Mosaic hop's aroma and flavors to the point that we've diagnosed him with the first-ever case of Mosaic Blindness. So Ryan set out to cure (or torment) his friend by tracking down five all-Mosaic beers to learn what makes this complex hop just so dang elusive for Craig. Also, Ryan's got a game for eagle-eared radio listeners in new cities; Craig's excited he finally got accepted into MIT; and we think we should've incorporated a dry-hopped Neti pot in all this. Send us a textIntroduction: The Essential PauseIn today's fast-paced world, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the unending to-do lists and the constant hustle. We often find ourselves yearning for a moment of peace—a space to simply breathe and reconnect with our inner selves and with God. That is exactly what the Permission to Pause podcast, hosted by Pat Layton, aims to offer: a sanctuary where we can intentionally step away from life's noise and find rest in God's presence. The Invitation to PauseIn the latest episode of Permission to Pause, Pat Layton welcomes us into her "she Shed," a space dedicated to retreating from the chaos and meeting with God. She emphasizes the importance of pausing and seeking direction from Him, especially during times when we feel the weight of our responsibilities. Drawing from Matthew 6:6, Pat reminds us of Jesus's invitation to find a quiet place and engage in honest communication with God. It's in these moments of solitude and stillness that we can experience His grace.Enjoy!Thank you for joining me on today's Permission to Pause. t's important to take time out to experience our own nature—not as defined by our body, mind, or personality; nor by our desires and attachments; nor yet by socially accepted goals and personas. This search is aided by using the dictum of gyana yoga, the yoga of discrimination: “Neti, neti,” or “Not this, not that.” We must make an effort to discover who we really are, apart from outer self-definitions, until we begin to feel like our authentic self.

When theologian Todd Billings received a diagnosis of incurable blood cancer, he described his imminent mortality as like lights in distant rooms turning off or flickering. “As the father of a one- and three-year-old, I tended to think of the next few decades as an open expanse, assuming I would see Neti and Nathaniel grow and mature. . . . But in being diagnosed . . . there is a narrowing that takes place.” In thinking about these limitations, Billings reflected on Psalm 31, how God set David in a “spacious place” (v. 8). Although David spoke of being afflicted by his enemies, he knew that God was his refuge and place of safety (v. 2). Through this song, David voiced his trust in God: “My times are in your hands” (v. 15). Billings follows David in placing his hope in God. Although this theologian, husband, and father faces a narrowing in life, he agrees that he also lives in a spacious place. Why? Because God’s victory over death through Christ’s sacrifice means that we dwell in Christ, “the most spacious place imaginable.” As he explains, “What could be more broad and expansive than to share in His life by the Holy Spirit?” We too may cry in lament, but we can take refuge in God, asking Him to lead us and guide us (vv. 1, 3). With David we can affirm that we live in a spacious place.

Send us a textMerry Christmas friend! As this year closes and a new one begins--I have a question for you. Have you ever paused to think about the story your life tells? We all know it's easy to get stuck in the past, which I very much understand, and help women work towards getting unstuck from their past. But it's often easy to get stuck in replaying moments of pain and shame. God invites us to see our stories through, through his lens, stories of redemption and healing and hope. Revelation 12:11, reminds us that our testimonies are weapons in spiritual battle. Your story, no matter how messy or broken it might feel, is part of God's masterpiece. It's part of your armor. It's part of what you fight the enemy with, overcome the enemy with.Let's PAUSE and think about that!Thank you for joining me on today's Permission to Pause. Send us a textWelcome to another soul-soothing episode of "Permission to Pause," where we carve out a quiet space for reflection, prayer, and a deeper connection with Jesus. I'm your host, Pat Layton, and today we have a truly heartening conversation lined up for you.Joining us is my dear friend Rachel Wojo, whom I met back in 2015 through a mastermind group and our shared journey of book publishing.Rachel has recently released a transformative book titled "Desperate Prayers," a heartfelt guide to embracing prayer during life's toughest moments. In our conversation, she shares powerful insights on the simplicity and sincerity of three-word prayers like "God help me," and underscores the importance of focusing on building a relationship with God rather than being fixated on specific outcomes. We dive deep into overcoming prayer fatigue, being authentic in our prayers, and shifting our perspectives through gratitude, even in the face of despair.Rachel also opens up about her own experiences, including the challenges faced by her daughter Taylor with uncontrolled seizures, and how she finds peace and encouragement despite such trying circumstances. Tune in as we explore the profound connection between desperation and dependence on God, and discover the comforting yet practical guidance Rachel's book offers. Making old things new again isn't just a practical way to save money and reduce waste; it's a profound act of creativity and respect for history. This principle can be applied to objects, relationships, and even our own lives. As we embark on this journey, a verse from the Bible offers timeless wisdom: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Odd Okoddo is a duo from Kenya and Germany, comprised of Olith Ratego and Sven Kacirek. The two artists crossed paths in Kenya around ten years ago when Sven Kacirek was working on his album "Kenya Sessions," which gained him recognition as a global producer. In 2018, they officially formed the project ODD OKODDO, combining their diverse talents seamlessly. Together, they create an energetic and vibrant sound that showcases Ratego's impressive vocal range and variety of tones alongside Kacirek's exceptional percussion skills. Olith Ratego specializes in singing in a musical style known as "dodo," originating from the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. This traditional female singing style is widely popular among Luo communities. In our discussion, we delved into Olith's deep passion for music from a young age, the significant influence of Tabu Osusa (a passionate Afro-Fusion producer who discovered him), the encounter with Sven, and various aspects of Dodo music in addition to their debut album Auma which was launched in 2019.It's been such a fantastic chance to meet Olith and Seven, truly extraordinary individuals.Olith has this incredible talent for crafting musical instruments that bring joy and inspiration to others. I encourage you to listen and immerse yourself in the wonderful sonic journey they create!

In this interview I am once again joined by John Maki Evans, teacher of Japanese swordsmanship and several esoteric spiritual disciplines, and author of ‘Kurikara: The Sword and the Serpent'. John discusses his time at Oxford University, his depression as a student, and why it took him years in a monastery and extensive training in Japan to undo the effects of academic study on his mind. John shares his insights into ‘The Subtle Art of a Cat', a little known, centuries old Japanese text with a potent message about spiritual cultivation, true art, and complete spontaneity. John tells the story of the text and explores its hidden meanings, including how to maintain awareness during dynamic action, access freedom and flow, and move beyond self consciousness. John also reflects on his powerful near-death experience, the art of teaching, and how to harmonise the primal forces of Thanatos and Eros, death and desire. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep246-subtle-art-of-a-cat-john-maki-evans-2 Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:09 - Getting into Oxford University 04:30 - John's experiences at Oxford University 07:57 - Struggles with depression 09:12 - Bad effect of Oxford on John's mind 10:25 - Stultification and John's personality 11:04 - Time at the monastery and releasing inner stuckness 13:26 - Time in Japan and developing a different personality 17:28 - How John learned Japanese 18:43 - Study arc for reading Japanese classics 21:19 - Gaining practice value from texts 23:37 - Accessing the real thing 27:22 - The Subtle Art of a Cat 33:17 - The polarising ego 35:14 - Spontaneity and beyond self consciousness 37:09 - Neti neti 39:12 - Spontaneous action and the spiritual side of martial arts 41:35 - Freedom and flow 43:09 - Maintaining awareness and complete spontaneity 45:47 - John's life changing near-death experience 54:20 - Hara power, the unconscious, and the survival instinct 58:16 - True martial cultivation 01:00:06 - Common mistakes and hurting oneself 01:04:11 - Complete body-mind participation 01:05:43 - Evaluating quality of movement and being 01:07:46 - Duende and art 01:09:18 - England and the old white male 01:10:24 - Learning to be with Thanatos and Eros 01:12:39 - The Gate of Killing and Death 01:15:39 - Harmonising intuition and manipulation 01:16:16 - Egotism in the martial arts 01:18:00 - Becoming exposed and the art of teaching 01:21:39 - Letting go of feeling good … Previous episode with John Maki Evans: - https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep231-esoteric-arts-of-japan-john-maki-evans To find out more about John Maki Evans, visit: - https://www.battodo-fudokan.co.uk/ Read ‘The Subtle Art of a Cat' - https://terebess.hu/zen/neko.pdf … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Cleaning out your sinuses with a Neti pot is one of the age old techniques that is common knowledge and is an example of traditional therapeutic techniques which have been adapted into mainstream culture and your mother may have even helped you out with this one. I would prefer not to risk redundancy, and yet I feel this one must...
Today, we're going to take a look at how salt can effectively get rid of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and mold in the body. Salt causes water to move out of the cell, eliminating these pathogens through dehydration. Salt thins mucus with this same mechanism. Salt removes water from the mucus, making it thinner so that it can be more easily expelled from the body. To eliminate mucus using salt, dissolve a teaspoon of sea salt (not table salt) in a glass of water. Drink or gargle the salt water. This exposes the mouth and throat to salt, which helps to get rid of mucus, improves immunity, and strengthens the autonomic nervous system. You can also use diluted apple cider vinegar. This changes the pH and helps kill microbes. A Neti pot uses nasal irrigation to gently send a stream of diluted salt water through your sinuses, helping to thin the mucus. If you have a constant post-nasal drip, you may have a fungal infection or mold issue going on in your sinuses, and cutting sugar from your diet may help. You can also use a humidifier with a saltwater solution while you sleep. A humidifier turns liquid into vapor, allowing you to inhale the salt water. Halotherapy, or salt therapy, can also be beneficial. If none of these remedies seem to be working, an ear infection could be the source of your mucus. In this case, try putting four to five drops of saltwater directly into each ear. You can try the same thing with diluted apple cider vinegar or use one drop of garlic oil in each ear. Vitamin D supports your immune system and helps prevent mucus. Vitamin D deficiencies are associated with enlarged tonsils, sinus allergies, sinus mucus, and ear infections. Try taking 20,000 to 50,000 IU of vitamin D once per week to address mucus. I'm so proud to bring you today's episode of Altared Podcast with Sylvester McNutt. Never have I seen a teacher, coach, guide, author extraordinaire be so equipped. Equipped with wisdom for you that is tried and true, that is factual, and available to you in any moment. In our conversation we discuss what to do with pain, and how to move through it. We talk about purpose and how to find it inward and outward. We touch on boundaries, what they are, why we need them, and he even gives examples of things we can say to set them... Basically, Sylvester is a gift, and this episode is your Care Package. That also happens to be the name of his latest book published by Hay House. Give it a listen, and if you dug it, share it. If you haven't already, please give Altared a 5 - star review wherever you listen as this will help spread the good word. Connect to our beloved Sylvester, and learn more about him, below. @sylvestermcnutt www.sylvestermcnutt.netI believe the best decision I ever made was to commit to a lifetime of healing, presence, and joy.During the 1980s my parents brought me into this world at the end of August. Growing up with four seasons in the Chicago-land area gave me access to year-round activity and engagement. I fell in love quickly with sports, the arts, and expressing myself as a human being. There was pain & addiction in my family system that I had to overcome. When I was younger I wished I had the skills, knowledge, and energy to keep my parents together, to keep my family unit together. This thirst for an understanding of psychology, communication, and spirituality became my life's dharma. Now, I'm 10+ years into my career as an author, speaker, podcast host, and I also am certified yoga teacher. I became the adult that I needed as a kid.
