Are We AI Literate? - S3E54 - An Expert Panel Discussing AI in Schools

Lassoing Leadership

SummaryThere is a question sitting underneath most conversations about generative AI in schools right now. Not whether it belongs in the classroom. That debate is largely settled. The harder question is what happens to the parts of learning that cannot be automated. For this episode of Season 3, Garth Nichols and Jason Rogers put that question to a panel of education experts: Alan Gertner, Justin Medved, Natalie Vera, and Eric Hudson. Rather than a single guest working through a single book, this conversation brings several voices into the room together, each carrying a different vantage point on where AI is already reshaping classrooms and where it still has no business being. The panel moves quickly, but it stays grounded. Talk of curriculum and tools gives way to something more personal: student agency, the discipline of keeping a human in the loop, and what it might mean for a generation of students to grow up fluent in tools built to think for them. What lingers longest is a claim offered almost in passing, that real education happens in the parts that cannot be Googled. Not because the tools are unwelcome. Because the parts that cannot be searched are the parts that were never really about information in the first place. Literacy, ethics, leadership. Everything the panel touches keeps circling back to that idea.Chapters00:00 setting the stage: why ai matters for schools right now04:00 the panel introduces itself, and where each perspective differs09:49 stories of ai already at work in classrooms20:12 practical strategies for bringing ai into a school29:59 the ethics of ai, and why a human still needs to be in the loop40:03 a future vision for ai and school leadership50:10 helping educators and parents step into ai with confidence59:57 closing thoughts and where to find moreKey TakeawaysAgency, not automation. The panel keeps returning to student agency as the center of AI literacy. The goal is not a generation that defers to the machine, but one that knows when to.Inspiration before implementation. The most convincing case for AI in schools comes not from policy, but from small classroom stories. The panel offers several, and they do more work than any framework could.A human still has to be in the loop. Ethical use of AI is treated as a design constraint, not an afterthought. Every strategy discussed assumes a person is still making the final call. What cannot be searched. For all the ground the panel covers, the conversation keeps returning to the same idea. The most important parts of education are the parts a search engine was never built to hold.Quotes"Centering student agency in AI literacy.""Real education happens in the parts that can't be Googled.""Generative AI can push civilization forward."ResourcesLearning on Purpose Newsletter: https://substack.com/learnonpurposeCohort21 Blog and Resources: https://cohort21.comKinship, Precision Learning: https://buildkinship.ai (double check, see note above)NETI, Network for EdTech and Innovation: https://linkedin.com/groups/12345678Guest LinksJustin Medved, LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/justinmedved/Natalie Vera, LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/natalie-vera-3b1ab840Eric Hudson, LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ejhudson/Alan Gertner, LinkedIn: [needs confirmation, placeholder]

Send us Fan MailHave you ever noticed how easy it is to lose a good rhythm? Morning prayer, journaling with your coffee still warm, a walk around the block — and then life happens. A trip, family in town, a deadline that won't move, a health scare that rearranges everything overnight. And before long you're looking at the wreckage of your good intentions wondering, "What happened to me?" In this episode of the Hallway series, Pat shares how the last few weeks pulled her clean out of her own rhythms — and the gentle whisper that stopped her mid-scramble: maybe she never left the track at all. Together we'll walk through three truths for the hallway: • God doesn't leave you because your routine changes — we mistake routine for relationship. • Hallways disrupt old rhythms on purpose — He may not be asking you to recover your old routine, but inviting you to discover a new rhythm. • Grace begins again every morning — the Holy Spirit isn't asking "Why did you stop?" He's asking, "Would you like to walk with Me today?" Write this one down and put it on your mirror: "God is not waiting for you at the end of your routine. He's walking with you in the middle of your interruption." Mentioned in this episode: • A Quiet Quest — Pat's new community on Skool for women walking through the in-between seasons • Pat's new 21-day guided journal for the Hallway season, available on Amazon Next week in the Hallway: How do you know which rhythms God actually wants you to keep? Because not every rhythm deserves to come back with you. Until then, friend — be gentle with yourself. Thank you for joining me on today's Permission to Pause. Shatkarma: The Cleansing Practices Hatha Yoga Said You Had to Do First

Most yoga teachers have heard of at least one or two of the Shat Kriyas — maybe you've practiced jala neti, maybe you've taught kapalabhati. But the full picture of what these six techniques actually are, where they come from, and why the Hatha Yoga Pradipika places them before pranayama is a conversation the modern yoga world rarely has with any rigor. In this episode, Aru goes deep into the Shatkarma — the six cleansing practices of Hatha Yoga — drawing directly from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita to unpack what these techniques were actually built to do, and why "yogic detox" is one of the least accurate ways to describe them. This is not a beginner overview. This is the episode for teachers, trainees, and serious practitioners who want to understand the architecture of Hatha Yoga — why the body had to be cleared before the breath could be regulated, what the texts say about each technique specifically, and where modern science has quietly caught up to practices that are at least six hundred years old on paper, and likely much older.Episode Highlights:What Shat Karma actually means — Sanskrit breakdown of the term and each of the six kriyasThe historical context: Swatmarama's Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th c.) vs. Gheranda Samhita (17th c.) and how they differ in their treatment of ShatkarmaWhy Swatmarama places the six kriyas before pranayama — and what that sequencing tells you about the entire logic of Hatha YogaThe difference between "cleansing for wellness" and "removing a specific obstruction so practice can go deeper"A full breakdown of all six — Neti, Dhauti, Basti, Trataka, Nauli, and Kapalabhati — with Sanskrit etymology, traditional technique, and purposeWhat modern research actually says (and where it goes quiet)Why Trataka is the only kriya that isn't physically invasive — and why that makes it the most misunderstood of the sixBasti: why it's the most prerequisite-dependent kriya, and why almost no one can do it traditionallyThe two texts don't list the six in the same order — and why that sequencing difference matters more than it looksPrana & Presence: An Immersive Week of Yoga, Stillness & Soulful Study in Southern ItalyJoin our mailing listFind all the resources mentioned in this episodeConnect with us on InstagramSubscribe to Aham Yoga on YouTubeLet's Talk Yoga Podcast on YouTubeLeave us a review and share this podcast with your friends!

Send us Fan MailAre you feeling like you're standing in a hallway? That in-between space where a chapter of your life has closed, but the next one hasn't quite begun? Maybe it's a shift in your family, career, or a dream that's evolved. This episode explores that very experience, offering a fresh perspective on these seasons of transition. Join host Pat Layton as she reframes “the hallway” not as a problem to be solved, but as a precious opportunity for preparation and renewal, a true gift from God. Many women experience a sense of “now what?” during these transitional periods, feeling unsure of what's next. But what if this time isn't a waiting room, but a preparation space? Pat guides you through five practical steps – Pause, Listen, Discover, Dare, and Flourish – to navigate these seasons with trust and grace. You'll learn to release old burdens, connect with God's guidance, and uncover hidden potential, recognizing that every chapter of your life has been preparing you for something. This isn't about becoming a new person, but about embracing the gifts and experiences you already possess. Discover how confidence comes from taking that first step, and how flourishing isn't about reaching a destination but embracing the present season with joy and purpose. Let go of the past, listen for God's direction, and step forward with courage, knowing your story is far from over. In this episode: Pat Layton reframes “the hallway” — those in-between seasons when one chapter has closed but the next hasn't begun — and walks through five steps to move through it well.Show Notes(0:01) Welcome — the “now what?” feeling and naming the hallway(1:51) Reframing the hallway as a gift, not a problem(2:48) Step 1 — Pause: slow down and breathe(3:59) Step 2 — Listen: tune in to God's guidance(5:04) Step 3 — Discover: your next chapter is hidden in your story(6:17) Step 4 — Dare: take a small, courageous step(7:34) Step 5 — Flourish: find joy and purpose in this season(9:41) Free resource: “The Hallway” devotional(11:06) Closing and where to connectChapters(0:01) Welcome(1:51) Reframing the hallway as a gift(2:48) Step 1 — Pause(3:59) Step 2 — Listen(5:04) Step 3 — Discover(6:17) Step 4 — Dare(7:34) Step 5 — Flourish(9:41) Resource: “The Hallway” devotional(11:06) Closing & where to connect Thank you for joining me on today's Permission to Pause. Pat, a seasoned coach with over 40 years of experience walking alongside women, shares profound insights on navigating these seasons with grace and finding renewal in stillness. Send us a textThere's something about December that holds both incredible beauty and unexpected pressure. Lights twinkle… calendars fill… expectations rise… and our hearts can so easily drift into overwhelm without us even noticing. If I'm honest, friend, this time of year often invites me into a deeper reliance on Jesus—not because everything is peaceful, but because everything isn't. And maybe you've felt that too.I found myself praying recently, “Lord, help me not miss You in the middle of all the noise.”Out of that simple prayer, something new was born— a way to slow down, breathe, and invite God's presence into the small corners of each December day.Thank you for joining me on today's Permission to Pause. Send us a textWhen Elijah fled to the wilderness, worn out and afraid, God didn't meet him in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Those powerful displays came and went, but the Lord's presence wasn't in them. Instead, Elijah heard Him in a gentle whisper—a sound so soft that he had to lean in close to recognize it. (1 Kings 19:11–12) In that quiet moment, God reminded Elijah—and us—that His voice doesn't compete with the noise of the world. It comes in the stillness, when our hearts are quiet enough to listen. The whisper of God is intimate, personal, and full of peace. It's not the shout of condemnation, but the tender voice that restores our strength and calls us forward again.PAUSE and HEAR HIS VOICE Thank you for joining me on today's Permission to Pause. Send us a textOur divine assignments are not about never feeling afraid. They're about choosing faith over fear—obedience over hesitation—even when your knees are shaking.Like Esther, you don't need a perfect résumé, a flawless past, or a detailed plan. You just need the willingness to say YES to God.So pause and ask yourself:“Where in my life is God calling me to step up, even though I feel unqualified?”Your Esther moment might not look like standing before a king. It might look like:Starting or joining that ministry that sets your soul on fire.Writing the book that's been on your heart.Launching that faith-fueled business.Or having that difficult, but necessary, conversation.Whatever it is, remember—you are here, right now, for such a time as this.Don't let imposter syndrome keep you small or silent.
