It's often touted that Rumi is one of the best-selling poets in the United States. That may be the case but popular renderings of the writings of this 13th-century Muslim have largely detached him from the Islamic tradition, and specifically Sufi mysticism. In Radical Love: Teachings from the Islamic Mystical Tradition (Yale University Press, 2018), Omid Safi, Professor of Islamic Studies at Duke University, places Jalal al-Din alongside luminaries within the rich archive of Islamic Sufi poetry. In this anthology of newly translated poetry Safi focuses on love, especially ‘ishq/eshq, what he renders as “radical love.” The volume organizes translations of Qur'an and Hadith, Sufi mystics and poets into four thematic sections: God of Love, Path of Love, Lover & Beloved, and Beloved Community. Radical Love does an excellent job of introducing readers to key ideas from Islamic mysticism that are rooted in first hand knowledge of Arabic and Persian texts. This book is valuable to both the scholar and the student because of Safi's informed nuance in both the careful selection of source passages and the subtle lyricism of his translations. In our conversation we discussed the translation of Sufi poetry in English, strategies to translation work, love in the Islamic tradition, the reception of Rumi, Ahmed Ghazali's first book in Persian on love, Qawwali singers, contemporary sheikhs, and several key Sufis authors. Award-winning Chef Jose Salazar was born in Colombia and raised in Queens, New York. His career includes working with Jean George Vongerichten, Thomas Keller, and other culinary luminaries. In 2008, he and his family moved to Cincinnati, where he now operates four successful concepts, including Salazar, Safi Wine Bar, Mita's, and Daylily. "I found Cincinnati to be a big, small town, where word of mouth drives the success or failure of your restaurant,” says Salazar. “We were fortunate to develop a good following and are grateful for the success this community has provided." Salazar is also thankful for the chance meeting with a customer many years ago, who became an investor in the business and led to a wonderful partnership. "I knew the kitchen very well but wasn't aware of the financial and business aspects of restaurants," he says. Salazar shares his experience with developing unique concepts, building a group of talented team members, and learning to operate a successful restaurant business. “It's no secret that this is a people business, and I learned it's best to trust your people but put your faith in your systems." He found that developing standard operating procedures is required for his team to operate consistently. Salazar is committed to following the steps that made his restaurants successful. This includes fostering strong purveyor relationships to secure the finest local ingredients, offering a fresh seasonal menu, and providing guests with personal attention from his well-trained service staff. As Salazar says, "The basics of the service business have never been more important than they are today.”

What if there were a simple way to deliver an electronic charge into difficult-to-reach spaces, cauterizing soft tissue and making it easier to flush out? By doing so, we could effectively eliminate microbes hiding in constricted lateral and accessory canals. The good news is that with the introduction of a new technology we can do just that. This innovative device seamlessly integrates with the Root ZX3 apex locator, requiring no additional time or space—yet offering a major breakthrough in root canal therapy. Joining us today to discuss this technology is Dr. Chafic Safi. Dr. Safi completed his postgraduate residency in Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania in 2015, where he also earned a Master of Science in Oral Biology. He lives and practices in Montreal, Canada.

Are you questioning the sustainability of leadership practices in your organization? How might centering the experiences and perspectives of women of color transform leadership in the social sector? What would it look like if funders truly listened to what nonprofit organizations need and responded accordingly? In this powerful episode, Rusty speaks with Safi Jiroh, Executive Director of LeaderSpring Center, to answer some of these questions. This episode delves into LeaderSpring's evolution from supporting only executive directors to creating a fellowship for women of color leaders at all levels in nonprofits. Safi discusses how the organization redesigned its curriculum to address systemic barriers and promote liberatory leadership practices while challenging unsustainable expectations in the nonprofit sector.Safi offers profound insights on what women of color bring to leadership roles, including community, empathy, lived experience, love, resilience, intuition, and truth-telling as primary contributions. The discussion tackles the current political climate where diversity, equity, and inclusion work is under attack, with Safi emphasizing the need to "fight to dream" and "fight to innovate" despite opposition. She challenges philanthropy to examine practices that create "bondage for nonprofit organizations" and to demonstrate the will to change by releasing control and embracing vulnerability. You can find all the episodes of this podcast plus our blog, toolkit and other resources at fundthepeople.org. In this episode, we visit Al Jalazon refugee camp to hear from Mahfouz Safi, whose family was forcibly expelled from Beit Nabala in 1948 by Zionist militias. Through his story—and the voices of his sister, Jihad, we uncover the far-reaching impact of Israel's crackdown on the agency that has provided education, healthcare, and aid to millions for over seven decades. As we explore the history of displacement and the role of UNRWA, two questions emerge: What's at stake if UNRWA disappears? And who will step in when an entire population is left without support? Please note that the voices you will hear are not those of Jihad and Safi. Our interviews with them were conducted in Arabic. To make their powerful stories accessible to a wider audience, we have translated and rerecorded their words using English-speaking voice actors.Thank you for tuning into This is Palestine, the official podcast of The IMEU!
Soraya Safi, D.M.D. is a coach and mentor to dental students and associate dentists. She helps associate dentists maximize the flexibility and freedom of choosing associateship over ownership and coaches them on how to overcome the isolation that often comes with such a challenging job, all while effectively navigating professional relationships and developing their dental skills after completing their formal education. While associateship may not be viewed as a long-term career choice for many dentists, Dr. Soraya Safi emphasizes that associateship doesn't have to be just a step on the road to practice ownership. Not every dentist wants the long hours, risk, and responsibility involved with owning his/her own practice. In this episode, Dr. Safi discusses the importance of a good associate employment agreement, strategies to build trust with patients and staff, and the opportunities for continuing education and coaching that are available to associates. Listeners who are interested in Dr. Safi's coaching can book a free consultation with her at drsaficoaching.com. Dr. Safi shares her insights on navigating a high-tax environment as an associate and discusses her long-term career goals, including balancing work and personal life. They also explore advice for dental students, the importance of relationships in the workplace, and Dr. Safi's journey in building her social media presence to support other dental professionals. The episode wraps up with a look at Dr. Safi's new coaching program and future plans. It's Thursday, January 11th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Vietnam imprisoned or put on home detention 258 people International Christian Concern reports that Vietnamese Christians feature prominently in a recent report from Defend the Defenders. The report found that Vietnam has imprisoned or put on home detention 258 prisoners of conscience. Each of them faced harassment, arrest, and imprisonment for exercising free speech and religion. The targets for persecution include religious leaders. One example is Mr. Trần Văn Bang. The Christian leader is serving four years in prison. He has opposed communism in Vietnam and openly shared his faith in Christ. Vietnam is ranked 25th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Jesus said in Matthew 10:32, “Whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in Heaven.” Christians are leaving India for United Kingdom The Guardian reports that churches in the United Kingdom are getting a boost from Christians migrating from India. Over the last decade, Christian identification has fallen from nearly 60% of the U.K. population to under 50%. Meanwhile, the number of Indian Christians in the country has surged from 135,000 to over 225,000. Local pastors report Indian families also have large numbers of children who tend to show more interest in religion than British young people. Biden rolls back conscience protections Yesterday, the Biden administration continued to role back conscience protections for Americans. Under the Obama administration, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a mandate forcing employers to pay for abortifacients in their health insurance plans. However, religious organizations were able to get exemptions after challenging the mandate in court. And the Trump administration expanded these exemptions to businesses. The latest rule from Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra claims to balance respect for religious beliefs and a so-called “right” to contraception. Tom McClusky with CatholicVote commented, “Is this a win for religious freedom? I'd say it could have been much worse. The onslaught of public protest prevented HHS from sending us back to 2011. But the rule definitely leaves Americans at the mercy of Becerra's whims – and whether he feels that the protections we do have are even worth enforcing.” U.S. House approves $1.6 trillion spending deal U.S. Congressional leaders agreed to a $1.6 trillion spending deal Sunday ahead of a potential government shutdown later this month. The agreement includes nearly $900 billion in defense spending and over $700 billion in non-defense discretionary spending. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer negotiated the deal. The agreement accelerates $20 billion in cuts to funding for the Internal Revenue Service and rescinds $6 billion in unspent pandemic aid. However, conservatives with the House Freedom Caucus criticized the deal for too much spending, calling it a “total failure.” 20% of office space is vacant Moody's Analytics reports 20% of office space in big U.S. cities was unleased at the end of last year. It's the highest number on record for commercial buildings. Working from home has become more common since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Moody's also noted the 1970s and 1980s saw overbuilding in the commercial space. Texas had the top three cities for office vacancy rates: Houston, Dallas, and Austin. Scientists confirm destruction of Biblical city of Gath And finally, scientists from several universities in Israel believe they have confirmed the destruction of a Biblical city as described in Second Kings. Chapter 12:17 says, “Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.” Researchers identified the city of Tell es-Safi as the Biblical city of Gath occupied by the Philistines. In fact, Goliath, the giant, was from Gath. Previously, scientists believed bricks from a wall in the ancient city were kiln-fired before construction. But, thanks to the technology of thermal demagnetization, researchers discovered the bricks were most likely burned in a destructive event, aligning with the Biblical account.
