Frohes Fest also. Wie immer gilt: Bleibt dran, nicht verpassen! Drew Taylor and Jim Hill kick off this week's show with a genuinely wild media landscape where holiday releases, awards season, and corporate maneuvering are all colliding at once. From a brewing battle over Warner Bros. Discovery to Disney's latest tech-flavored swing, the first half is a rapid tour through what's breaking (and what might be breaking next). Then Jim takes the wheel solo for a longer, history-packed trip over the rainbow, tracing how animation veterans, studio deals, and a certain pair of feuding cartoon animals keep finding their way back to Oz. NEWS • Netflix and Paramount Skydance are reportedly lining up competing bids for Warner Bros. Discovery, with the situation edging into hostile takeover territory • Disney signs a three-year OpenAI licensing and investment deal, reportedly tied to short-form character content and platform experimentation • Zootopia 2 clears the $1 billion worldwide mark, adding to a renewed “WDAS is back” narrative after recent holiday stumbles • The trailer drops for Andy Serkis' Animal Farm, with Seth Rogen voicing Napoleon and Angel Studios handling distribution • A quick remembrance of animator Tony Benedict, whose career path traced the industry's mid-century churn from Disney to TV animation FEATURE • Why Chuck Jones left Termite Terrace, briefly detoured to Disney, then later set up shop at MGM • How Disney's MGM licensing deal and the later Turner-Time Warner corporate shuffle complicated who “owned” what in the Oz rights maze • The surprisingly effective mash-up of MGM legacies in Tom & Jerry and the Wizard of Oz (and why it was successful enough to inspire a return trip) • A lightning round of other animated Oz side-quests, including costly misfires and international oddities HOSTS • Jim Hill - IG: @JimHillMedia | X: @JimHillMedia | Website: JimHillMedia.com • Drew Taylor - IG: @drewtailored | X: @DrewTailored | Website: drewtaylor.work FOLLOW • Facebook: JimHillMediaNews • Instagram: JimHillMedia • TikTok: JimHillMedia SUPPORT Support the show and access bonus episodes and additional content at Patreon.com/JimHillMedia. We added our thoughts on the subject and I did an analysis of what it would cost to just buy the shows I watched vs recording them on the DVR. Streaming services were just coming on the scene and we had no idea what was coming down the road.  In this episode I go back and discuss what we said back then and how it actually turned out. Rob Colletti, the live-action actor playing Wapol in the upcoming new season of Netflix's One Piece, is coming to the defense of Charithra Chandran for portraying Miss Wednesday, also known as Nefertari Vivi, as a woman of color. Chandran's social media channels have been flooded with hateful, racist remarks following the Season 2 trailer premiere at One Piece Day 2025.Colletti, currently cast as "Tin-Plate" Wapol for the "Drum Island" arc of One Piece Season 2, took to social media to address the hateful comments being sent to Chandran after the latest Netflix trailer teased her appearance as Miss Wednesday. Although the One Piece cast was designed to be multiracial by series creator Eiichiro Oda, toxic fans online have attacked Chandran for portraying Vivi, who is depicted with fair skin in the anime and manga, as a British Indian actor. "It's astonishing to me in all the wrong ways how a certain small (but far too vocal) corners of the One Piece fandom can watch a rubber pirate, a reindeer doctor, and giant walking, talking fish and be totally fine... but draw the line at the simple IDEA of Nefertari Vivi being played by a woman who isn't white," Colletti said on his latest Instagram Stories.Support The Podcast!https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/roose366/subscribeFollow For More Content &Streams!Science Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5nFXe9dPeWrMpyObyAlrnF?si=7358d1cf32cb45b7Youtube Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/@RooseJp/videosTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastonanime

Meanwhile, this is a big week for Chinese college entrance exams and how to stop students from using AI? Why shut down AI systems country wide, of course! But…does this really work in a world where our AI allies are always with us? And then there are the non-human bubble ring blowers who share much of their world through this strange form of communications. Bobby Wilder brings us up to date with the latest on Bitcoin’s latest rally, and atmosphere martian sputtering??  Enjoy! How solar radiation strips away the Martian atmosphere

CBS also boasted eight of the top 10 most-watched programs, including new show hits Matlock and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. Freshman Shows Boost Time Slots: New series like CBS's reboot of Matlock and ABC's High Potential and Shifting Gears improved their respective time slots' viewership. Matlock became the season's most-watched new series, while Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage was the top comedy. Reboots and Spinoffs Rule: The season leaned heavily on familiar franchises. Examples include CBS's NCIS: Origins (a prequel to NCIS), Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage (a Young Sheldon spinoff), and NBC's Happy's Place (starring Reba McEntire, echoing her sitcom roots). This reflects a cautious approach by networks, favoring known brands over original concepts. Long-Running Shows Keep Going: Iconic animated series on Fox, like The Simpsons (renewed through its 40th season), Family Guy (through its 27th season), and Bob's Burgers (through its 19th season), continued their historic runs, cementing their status as cultural staples. The CW's Reboot Continues: The CW, now under new management, focused on sports and unscripted content, airing NASCAR Xfinity Series races and shows like Totally Funny Animals. It also renewed scripted series like Sullivan's Crossing for a third season, signaling a shift from its former teen-drama-heavy identity. Broadcast TV Still Draws Older Viewers: Social media chatter on X suggested younger audiences are drifting from broadcast TV, with “boomers” as the primary viewers. This perception aligns with complaints about repetitive genres (cop, lawyer, doctor shows) and a lack of risk-taking, though hits like Tracker and High Potential still pulled diverse viewers.
