As part of our end-of-the-year tradition, Jordan and Marc look at three Looney Tunes shorts we do not like. Marc chose yet another government-issued propaganda film, the Chuck Jones-penned Drafty, Isn't It? Jordan, on the other hand, went for more perplexing failures, like Dough for the Do-Do, a shot-for-shot remake of a Clampett classic, and Horse Hare, a Bugs short too damned racist to be remastered. Hilarity, tedium and value judgments towards the French ensue. LINKS: Support us on Patreon Follow us on Twitter Follow us on Bluesky Follow us on Instagram

It's not easy being green—especially when your heart is three sizes too big. No, we're not talking about someone abusing anabolic steroids; we're talking about everyone's favorite green Christmas curmudgeon: The Grinch.Created by Dr. Seuss and brought to life in the iconic animated Christmas special by Chuck Jones—of Tom & Jerry fame—The Grinch was voiced by two legends: Boris “The Mummy” Karloff and Thurl “Tony the Tiger” Ravenscroft. As two beloved queer cultural figures, both are integral to this beloved holiday tradition. And yet, despite the popularity of the book, the animated TV special, and the live-action movie, you seldom see people dressing up as The Grinch, until recently.Today, actor, mime, and drag queen Gregg Steigmeyer joins us to talk about his unique gig playing The Grinch at holiday parties. Gregg shares how he strikes the delicate balance between staying in character as the grouchy Grinch while still spreading that essential holiday cheer. Why is Gregg so good at playing The Grinch? Maybe it's his background in physical comedy, or maybe it's because he's Vikki Spykke, one of Chicago's drag legends going back to the 80s when drag queens excelled at bringing in the sass and the spunk. Plus–– An original Christmas classic: The Grinch Who Stole Cher. FOLLOW US:★ linkedin.com/in/gregg-steigmeyer-7ba9641a/ ★ instagram.com/faustofernos ★ instagram.com/marcfelion

It's part 3 of our ‘New York' marathon and we're in up in the skyscrapers for “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”. A film in which John Glover portrays a thinly veiled Donald Trump in a far more sympathetic light than would be possible these days; Hulk Hogan is revealed to be younger than any of our hosts; and Christopher Lee has already got rabies. The belated sequel to Joe Dante's original failed to ignite the box office, and seems to have a annoyed many fans of that first film, possibly for the crime of trying to be a bit different, but we find it impossible to not get swept up in the glorious glee with which the titular monsters, and their director, wreak havoc with this movie. Unfettered from the control of his producers, Dante ramps up everything to the point of absurdity, channeling his love of Looney Tunes (including a specially produced Bugs and Daffy intro from the mighty Chuck Jones) with satirical swipes at Corporate culture, the diminishing returns of sequels, and postmodern references to the first film. Packed with cameos and references, this is a non-stop assault, which manages to be both utterly daft and really smart all at once. Watch (re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

When people consider all-time classic Christmas stories, Dr. Seuss' tale of the Grinch tends to be one of the most fondly remembered. While the original book has had multiple adaptations over the years, the first one had the biggest influence, if for no other reason than it cemented the idea that the Grinch should be colored green. But all these years later, does this Chuck Jones television special still prove to be worth a watch, or is it time to leave it in the past? In this special replay episode, we dive back into the chaotic, festive, and mischievous world of "Gremlins" (1984). Joined by special guest co-host Gerry D., we revisit this 80s classic that blends comedy, horror, and holiday spirit in a way only director Joe Dante can deliver. Gerry and I discuss first-time-watch memories, favorite scenes, and the timeless appeal of Gizmo and his unruly counterparts. We'll also uncover behind-the-scenes stories about the effects used for the Gremlins, the film's unexpected darker tones, and its legacy as a holiday favorite (or anti-holiday, depending on how you see it!). Whether you're a fan of Stripe's antics or love a good dose of 80s nostalgia, this episode is a must-listen! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: There are references to the crew's previous projects, including some Spielberg shout-outs on the Kingston Falls theater marquee (where early working titles for both "Close Encounters" and "E.T." are listed), a poster for Twilight Zone: The Movie (Spielberg and Dante's first collaboration), and a mention of Dr. Fantasy (the nickname of producer Frank Marshall). The scenes set at the trade show attended by Rand Petlzer (Hoyt Axton) feature brief appearances by Spielberg, composer Jerry Goldsmith, and Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. Legendary animation director Chuck Jones even appears as Billy's artist friend in an early bar scene. Although it is not visible, "Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf", by Joe Dante, Sr. is on Billy's nightstand. Director Joe Dante, Jr. said his father criticized him for not making the title more visible. At the movie's end, Gizmo pops the window blind to expose Stripe to the sunlight. The original edit featured Gizmo lifting the shade, then Billy. Again, Spielberg suggested to Dante that the film show Gizmo to be more of the hero of the story than Billy. Dante agreed and the scene was edited to clearly show it was Gizmo that stopped Stripe. I chat with Patric Verrone, who is a Writer/Producer on Futurama and has worked on Disenchantment, The Simpsons, Rugrats, and one of my favorite animated shows of the 90s, The Critic. We talk about how a Producer credit on an animated show is usually just a title for established writers of a show and less of a job description. We talk about how, like Conan Obrien, he got into animation writing through writing for late night and sketch comedy shows and how that was a pipeline for comedy writers. We get into how "Writer's Rooms" are different for Prime Time animated shows than smaller budget shows and how they're very similar in structure to live action sitcoms. When we go back in time, we talk about how Patric was influenced more by Chuck Jones and Looney Tunes than Disney cartoons as Disney was more stingy with Mickey during his upbringing. And as always, we get great advice, for writers looking to get into animation writing. We all know the rules of the Looney Tunes universe: rabbits can outrun bullets, shots to the face don't kill, and the laws of gravity don't always apply. But that universe is still very much like our own, in which we all strive to be like Bugs Bunny, but are really like Daffy Duck. If there's an aesthetic of frustration, Chuck Jones is its Shakespeare. Join us for a conversation about Rabbit Fire, Rabbit Seasoning, and Duck! Rabbit, Duck!—the three cartoons that comprise what's called “The Hunting Trilogy.” We promise it's not one of those awful attempts by intellectuals to rhapsodize about popular art, although we do bring in Henry James at one point. For our closing episode of season 2, we are revisiting our annual tradition of talking about a much-beloved holiday special from our youth. This year, it's Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the classic cartoon that was a holiday staple in both our homes. We discuss the partnership between Looney Tunes animation great Chuck Jones and Ted Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, translating the fantastical and imaginative world of Seuss into the medium of moving images, the story behind the now-classic song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," the brilliant casting of horror icon Boris Karloff, and the recurring Christmas theme of anti-commercialism. Be sure to also check out our guest spot on episode 52 of Why The Flick?, where we discuss the live action Jim Carrey Grinch adaptation; it's a great companion piece to this episode! Happy holidays from our family to yours! We look forward to talking more movies with you in 2024.

Greetings Folks!  In this week's episode, I'm joined by the co-writer of Merrie Little Batman, Morgan Evans to discuss his works as well as the little scare us Looney Tunes fans experienced last week surrounding the removal of the classic Merrie Melodies catalog from Max! In a quick turn of events, we had news that the remaining short from the classic Looney Tunes series, as well as the 2011-2014 Series, the Looney Tunes Show was to be removed from the streaming service Max, only to be ratified in it's press release with word that the titles were added by mistake.  Physical Media is here to stay and this week is a great time to stock up! The Collector's Choice Vol. 2 drops on Blu-ray featuring some never before seen restored cartoons from Friz Freleng, Chuck Jones and Art Davis! Thanks to the Warner Archive for putting that together. Morgan Evans also wrote for the Tunes in the WB100 celebration episode of Teen Titans Go! so go to chat about that, but unfortunately  it's currently not available to stream anywhere. Hopefully soon it will be made public again, as it did air on Cartoon Network on Oct. 14th. Merry Little Batman: The latest project saved from termination due to the Discovery/WB merger is here thanks to Amazon Prime picking it up for distribution! The Holiday Crime Caper is available on Dec. 8th and it looks absolutley delightful! With Batman's mission to clean up Gotham, finally complete he can now focus on the next one, being a Dad to Damien Wayne, his son. When Damien loses his Father's gift, it's up to him to protect the mansion from burglars in this festive comedy! Merry Little Batman: Bringing a Little Holiday Crime to Amazon Prime. I've got the amazing Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast with me to talk about the holiday classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” Shown throughout the ‘80s, the special was a staple during December, and has remained so.In 1988, it was released on VHS, and according to the cover box:“Dr. Seuss is back with his tongue-twisting verse and lighthearted music to delight children of every age. What holiday would be complete without this timeless tale of the mean-spirited Grinch and his feeble attempt to steal the Yuletide celebration of Whoville? The crotchety Grinch with ‘termites in his smile' and ‘garlic in his soul' tries once again to wipe out Christmas for the cheerful Whos, only to discover the true spirit of the holiday season lies beyond his covetous grasp.Narrated by the great Boris Karloff and featuring such musical favorites as ‘You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch' and ‘Trim Up the Tree,' Dr. Seuss' ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas' will warm the most miserly heart. We're surveying a selection of Bugs Bunny cartoons, all with a medieval theme, some of which are explicitly Arthurian.   The earliest, "Knights Must Fall", is a pretty generic burlesque of Bugs Bunny versus a powerful knight, but draws some inspiration from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, especially in Bugs's use of locomotives and whatnot.   "Knight Mare Hare" is a pretty unfocused take on Connecticut Yankee, complete with framing device, and while it's not a particularly tight cartoon, it has some classic Chuck Jones abstract backgrounds, and some pretty good gags.   "Knighty Knight Bugs" is a much more tightly-constructed story, with Bugs being sent by King Arthur to recover the Singing Sword, only to encounter Yosemite Sam as the Black Knight. This won the Academy Award for best animated short, and it's not hard to understand why.   "Bugs Bunny in King Arthur's Court" is an oddity--a 20-minute retelling of Connecticut Yankee made in 1978, it's sometimes surprisingly faithful to Twain's novel--like Bugs setting up factories like Hank Morgan--while at other times making extremely strange choices, like having Daffy Duck as King Arthur.   Voices by Mel Blanc. "Knights Must Fall" and "Knighty Knight Bugs" directed by Fritz Freleng, "Knight Mare Hare" and "King Arthur's Court" directed by Chuck Jones.   To hear the entire episode, join the Mary Versus the Movies patreon for $3/month to hear this and the entire series Hollywood Avalon: https://www.patreon.com/maryvsmovies. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking, for a second time to Eric Bonerz, son of actor/director Peter Bonerz. We spoke to Eric a while back and what started out as a fun connection to our time together as kids at the Oakwood School became a pop culture potpourri of 1970s LA, celebrity, movies, film, trivia, television, music, weird video stores and more. In fact, there was so much to talk about, we didn't get to all of it so on this episode, we were able to go back to some of the things we missed. Like what you ask? How about dinner and a movie with cartoonist Chuck Jones at your house? Or being the drummer for Kim Gordon's band Free Kitten in 1993 as part of the Lalapalooza tour? Or how about the time Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor mixed a track for one of Eric's projects in the living room of that infamous house on Cielo Drive? Got your attention? We thought so. We loved talking with Eric about car culture in LA, crowbar wielding truckers, the Wonderland Avenue murders, befriending a school librarian, driving Peter Bonerz AMC Eagle station wagon, befriending a young director Harmony Korine, interrupting De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest's pre-show doobie, an unmade version of Blade Runner starring his father and directed by Martin Scorsese and much more. So sit back, wind down and listen to our latest conversation with Eric Bonerz for this latest episode of the podcast. Somehow Bob Newhart and Friends never gets brought up…until Josh confuses the TV show with the movie Kids. It's all here on the today's episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
