Sixteen of those as an undercover narcotic agent. He has experienced many traumatic incidents during his career. In 1998 he was diagnosed with an incurable neuro-muscular disease that caused the loss of feeling, mobility, and strength in his hands and feet. After over 30 surgeries he became addicted to opioids. He is currently working at a Men's Residential Treatment facility as a Registered Alcohol and drug Counselor and Pastoral Care Chaplain. Knowing when God is speaking to us is hard to tell sometimes. But to be able to talk about this with others truly made you wonder. How many times did God try to speak to me, but I didn't want to listen because of the vessel it was coming to us? Indeed, it is something to think about. Thankfully, I had Norm on the show to share his perspective and personal story on this significant topic.
This classic episode of “48 Hours" explores the investigation of ex-cop turned private eye Chris Butler who staffed his San Francisco Bay area firm with local soccer moms. Butler and his firm of private investigator moms became media sensations — Lifetime Television started a reality show based on the P.I. moms. Reporter Pete Crooks was invited to write about the real-life “Charlie's Angels,” but the story took a strange turn when he learned from a confidential informant that most of the cases were staged, crooked cops were involved, and that Butler was dealing drugs with top California narcotics cop Norm Wielsch. Butler and Wielsch were also running a massage parlor which was allegedly a front for prostitution. The soccer moms were unaware of Butler and Wielsch's alleged schemes. Butler was sentenced to eight years in prison and was released in 2019. In 2013, Norm Wielsch was sentenced to 14 years in prison. “48 Hours” correspondent Maureen Maher reports. The average age of an LEO suicide is in their early forties with almost 17 years of experience; so it's not always a young emotional cop who gets overwhelmed by stress and trauma. It's sometimes the older cop, who was stressed out and traumatized years ago but now is unable to stay ahead of it because of age, illness, and life's complications. The warrior mentality pushes the older cop to keep going, even when he or she can't anymore, and something has to give. Maybe this leads to suicide but there are also other ways to self destruct as a cop.Today I'm talking to Norm Wielsch. Norm was a California cop who was successful in his career until PTSI, health problems, and addiction changed his life forever. Norm became a criminal and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. In this first of two parts, we'll discuss the trauma, the medical limitations, and the prescription med addiction that led to him ruining his career and ending up behind bars.Warning: This episode contains discussion of traumatic events and suicide attempts. I was totally caught off guard as I was about start the show and learned that my guest was the very person that Michael Sugrue mentioned in Episode 19, that caused the dismantling of an elite drug task force. Needless to say, the normal questionnaire went out the window. We talked openly and honestly about the bad decisions that led to Norm Wielsch to be convicted of felonies and serving time in prison. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. This is one you don't want to miss. Norm Wielsch served 12 years on the Antioch PD, CA and 13 years with the California Department of Justice working various assignments, including undercover narcotics. He spent years catching bad guys and keeping drugs off the street until a major bad decision landing him on the wrong side of the prison cell bars. His story of redemption is amazing. Now he uses his skills to help others suffering from addition and PTSD in an effort to prevent them from going down the same path as he did. He also has a helpful book available for those who may be suffering. The link is below. Norm Wielsch was an agnostic police officer for over 25 years. He was exposed to many traumatic incidents and diagnosed with PTSD. Then he was diagnosed with an incurable debilitating neuromuscular disease, and had over 25 surgeries in ten years. He was prescribed opioids for the pain, and soon began to abuse the opioids to relieve the negative emotions of PTSD. After that, his daughter was diagnosed with liver tumors, and the prognosis was poor. This placed him in a downward spiral that led him to make some very poor decisions that led to a 14-year prison sentence. He responded to God's calling, and though divine intervention, his daughter and he were both healed. He spent over 8 years in Federal prison where he co-pastored the church and taught how God heals PTSD. In prison, he obtained a master's degree in Theology and Counseling, then a doctorate in Christian Counseling. He went on to become a Registered Addiction Counselor and pastoral care provider in a residential treatment facility. He wrote a book called, “Christ-Centered Healing of Trauma: Healing a Broken Heart” and a small group study guide to go with it. Both are on sale now. Is there a difference between combat PTSD and First Responder PTSD? According to my guest, Norm Wielsch, your body recognizes them as the same thing. In my conversation with Norm, we hear about his father fighting during WWII and losing almost his entire family during the bombings. True to his father's generation and culture, he never spoke about his war trauma. Fast forward to Norm's service as a police officer, when he was diagnosed with a painful disease. We talk about how he went down the slippery slope with painkillers, hiding his condition with fellow police officers, and making poor choices. Find out what happens when he gets sent to prison, the lessons he's learned, and what God was doing in his heart through it all. Norm offers real and practical solutions for those suffering from PTSD. I was exposed to many traumatic incidents. I was diagnosed with PTSD. Then I was diagnosed with an incurable debilitating neuro-muscular disease. I had over 25 surgeries in ten years. I was prescribed opioids for the pain. I soon began to abuse the opioids to relieve the negative emotions of PTSD. Then my daughter was diagnosed with liver tumors. This placed me in a downward spiral that led me to make some very poor decisions that led me to a 14-year prison sentence. Though divine intervention, my daughter and I were healed. I spent over 8 years in Federal prison where I taught how God heals PTSD. In prison, I obtained a masters degree in Theology and Counseling, then a doctorate in Christian Counseling. I went on to become a Registered Addiction Counselor, and am in process of becoming a Chaplain with the Assemblies of God Church. If you allow Him to so, God WILL change your mistakes and traumatic events into good. I am a great example of God's love. website: https://www.christ-centeredhealing.com/ email: info@Christ-CenteredHealing.com

Norm Wielsch tells his story of going from being a police officer of 25 years to opioid addict and then convicted felon.
