In the second day of our series on renewal, today we're going to invite God to renew our minds. Our minds are the gateway to our emotions, decisions, and perspectives. How we see the world around us, the assumptions we live with, the lies we believe, and where we choose to focus our attention, make all the difference in our daily experience. May God guide each of us down the path to renewing our minds in his presence, and through his word today, that we might experience a greater measure of abundant life in him. Our Scripture for today comes from Romans 12:2, and today's worship is Sound Mind by Melissa Helser. -- Thanks for listening to today's First15 Podcast. One of the new features that you can enjoy when you download the app is our Guided Prayers. We are adding new prayers to our library every month, so if you need a moment of peace with God, let these prayers be your guide! For the nights when you find yourself anxious, overly excited, or struggling for whatever reason and sleep seems to you like an unconquerable feat, know that you are not alone. Sleepless nights aren't always due to negative issues. Maybe you have something really exciting that you are looking forward to and the anticipation of it all becomes a canvas in your mind of endless possibilities. Whatever the reason, we pray that this new Guided Prayer by our friend Peyton Garland will help you invite God into the space that he already dwells, and open your heart both to release to him all that is on your mind and to dream with him about the possibilities. As you do, remember this invitation from scripture: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28
Today we're going to look at how incredibly patient God is with us, as we begin our second day in a week long focus on the story of the prodigal son. So often we judge ourselves, we can be our own worst critic. But today, if we'll open our hearts and minds to listen and receive, we'll find a patient God whose never surprised by our mistakes, and who never casts us out in the midst of our failures and shortcomings. May the patience and love of God transform your heart today, as we spend time in his presence, engaging with his word. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 86:15, and today's worship is Sound Mind by Bethel Worship. -- Thanks for listening to today's First15 Podcast. We are adding new prayers to our library every month, so if you need a moment of peace with God, let these prayers be your guide! In today's world, life moves at such tremendous speed that sometimes it seems the only way one might gain any sort of grasp on all that is going on around them is to focus solely on what's going on in their own life. The temptation, then, isn't just to turn a blind eye to the suffering of others, but to actually be willfully blind to the struggles of others entirely. But the way of Jesus beckons us to follow him down a much more intentional path wherein even in his own suffering, he chose to care not only for those suffering in a similar way as he, but the very ones doing him harm. In today's prayer, our friend Peyton Garland helps us explore the topic of empathy through the lens of scripture and by way of her own honesty. I pray it blesses you today and helps you to lift your eyes above and beyond all that stand in front of you today so that you might see the riches of the way of Christ.

In our second devotional positioning ourselves to more fully experience God's promises, today we're going to look at the role of renewing our minds in opening our heads and hearts to receive all God longs to give. Through God's promise to forever abide with us, we can rest in the knowledge that he has a harvest of blessings and beauty for us despite the pain.
In today's devotional, we're continuing our series of taking hold of God's promises by looking at his promise of strength. Every day I wake up, I'm reminded of my weakness. No human has ever lived a perfect day. But the goodness of this promise lies in that God promises his strength when we are weak. In his grace, you and I can live with the real, meaningful, and powerful strength of our God. As we focus this week on growing in trusting God, today we'll explore the concept of obedience. Trust and obedience are directly related. Willing, joyful obedience comes from a place of deep-rooted trust in the character and intentions of your God. When we learn to trust the heart of the Father, obedience is a natural response to whatever he asks. May you grow today in your willingness and excitement to quickly obey the Lord as you learn of his love and goodness. Today's fast-paced society often leaves us anxious about finances and future plans, but this prayer encourages believers to not be consumed with pursuing overabundance and trust God's perfect, balanced provision instead.
May is mental health awareness month, and more families than ever are battling challenges in this area of health. Catherine and her special guest, Peyton Garland, dive deep into the topics of OCD, anxiety, and depression in this episode to offer unique insights, education, and encouragement to weary parents. Peyton has a powerful testimony of how God is using a mental health disorder in her life for her good and for His glory. Having dealt with obsessive compulsive thoughts since early childhood, Peyton breaks down the four primary types of “sticky thoughts” that people who battle OCD contend with. They are: Mental Thoughts & Taboo Rituals (a.k.a. Religious OCD) Symmetry Contamination Harm Peyton expertly navigates the detours and dead ends associated with these compulsive thoughts, and Catherine shares the victory she has experienced in her 17-year battle with clinical depression, highlighting the most dangerous prayer you can pray as a Christian! Along the way, these ladies offer hope while pointing families that deal with mental health disorders towards healing. Inside today's podcast, I'm bringing back one of my favorite guests to discuss the topic of being tired. I wonder if you can guess who my guest is? She's a writer who has published two books, and she shares her life in authenticity to encourage others who struggle with OCD and perfectionism. (Among other things). She has a pilot husband she adores along with her two dogs and she's always looking for the next great coffee shop! Can you guess who it is? It's Peyton Garland! Questions you can ask yourself. 1. Let's talk about your relationship with rest. When your body is getting heavy and your attitude snippy, do you realize it might be time for a break? 2. How often do you feel tired or worn out? 3. Does feeling tired frustrate you? 4. Do you believe God wants you to press on and persevere even when you're tired and need a break? Don't give up in what? Persevere in what? 5. Does your belief about rest need an adjustment? Peyton's books! Hello friends, I'm excited to present you with the audio version of You Don't Have to Be Perfect 2nd edition. Part 2 will start now! This book is definitely something to read if you want to grow in your spiritual walk. Many years of my life I struggled with "people pleasing" out of fear. In this book, it starts out with living in fear of what people think. It then moves how you can you scripture to fulfill God's plan for your life. I have learned recently that faith is always better then fear. We have to live in God's vision and not other people's vision. I would encouraged you to read this book if you struggle with identity in Christ. This is a book about the struggle being real, but learning to spend time in the Word to learn how the transition happens.❤ -Angela Osburn In You Don't Have to be Perfect, Vanessa gives an honest accouxnt of her struggle with perfectionism. She explains how a real and true relationship with God and commitment to reading the Bible and living in faith every day helped her change her mindset and find her true identity in Christ. One of my favorite quotes is this, “And (the Bible) also proves that once we accept God's gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ, we get to walk through the rest of our lives, worthy, loved, and enough, hallelujah!” Isn't that what we all want? Read this book and learn what true freedom from the bondage of our mind and our own limitations looks like, you will be glad you did. - Kylee Ghabour, elementary school teacher, mom “Vanessa gives you a honest, personal, and inspiring account of her transition from perfectionism to grace. She lays out the specific steps she took to make Jesus real and intimate and invites you along. Every closet or self professed perfectionist must read this book!” -Michael Wolsten, author and speaker Within these pages, Vanessa Luu takes an honest look at our need for perfection and how that can hinder us in our relationships and especially in our most important relationship of all, the one we have with Christ. She is transparent about her own personal struggles and how she has learned to see them as blessings. Vanessa addresses some common issues that can hinder us and points us to Scripture and prayer for the answers. Readers will find compassion and encouragement, as well as solid advice for letting go of unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others. -Roberta Thorndike, Joyful One Editing While society deems perfection as an attainable accolade, Vanessa reminds us that God's loving nature has yet to require our mastery of life. In fact, if we trade our perfection for his grace, we win an immeasurable peace and reap an undeniable satisfaction that could only come from Perfection himself. You Don't Have to Be Perfect challenges us to do just that—to deny perfection in pursuit of a God who only requires love as access to infinite delight. –Peyton Garland, author of Tired, Hungry, & Kinda Faithful, Where Exhaustion and Exile Meet God --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/vanessa-luu/support

Today we are speaking with Author Peyton Garland. Peyton is a writer, wanna-be rapper, and coffee shop hopper who loves connecting people to a grace much bigger than expected. Her debut book, Not so by Myself, was promoted by Former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino and endorsed by TED Talk speaker and creator of the More Love Letters movement, Hannah Brencher. She lives in Colorado with her husband, Josh (JG), and their two gremlin dogs, Alfie and Daisy. In this episode we discuss: 1) The shift from perfection to grace and how this was initiated by a good friend who gave Peyton permission to ask for help and support which led to 3 different diagnosis from a mental health professional. This opened the door to letting go of bitterness and perfectionism which led to embracing the term grace. 2) We spoke about shame, the weight of it, how to shift from it and the doors it opened in Peyton's life when she learned to shift from perfection to grace. 3) The power of holding the door open for the people behind you. Once you have learned the lessons, they have changed your life, learning how to pay that forward to impact others, shorten their learning curve and be a source of support is how we can continue to hold that door open for others. Bereavement, isolation, loss of income and fear are global pandemic side-effects that are acting like accelerants being poured on an already fragile mental health crisis. Many people are facing increased levels of alcohol and drug use, insomnia, and anxiety. Today is a chosen day by a major corporation in Canada to focus on mental health. Honestly, at this point, things like this leave me feeling like these “campaigns” are nothing more than marketing ploys because the only thing that has changed, is that the problem has gotten worse. Personally, I've known too many people that left this world in the past 2 years because it all became too much. Joining me today is Peyton Garland to chat about her book Not So By Myself, and the continuing mental health crisis. It's no secret pilot wife can be lonely, filled with anxiety and uncertainty; holidays, special events; lack of ability to long term plan. How do we deal with this, especially if we have no prior experience in the Aviation world? My guest today wrote the book, literally. Peyton Garland is a writer, wanna-be rapper, and coffee shop hopper who loves connecting people to a grace much bigger than expected. Her debut book, Not so by Myself, was promoted by Former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino and endorsed by TED Talk speaker Hannah Brencher. We cover: Her childhood as a Military brat, a "Pre-Med Flunkie"; News Reporter, an Enneagram 1, (her Husband is a 3 on the Enneagram). Peyton was quickly thrust into the role of “Pilot Wife” when her husband changed careers 6 months after their marriage, leaving behind a career as a sales rep with the Atlanta Falcons. They struggled through her taking on 3 jobs to get him through flight training and certifications; their separation when he left on his first job in Indiana; his abrupt, furloughed career during Covid, and their recent celebration of his upcoming commercial airline job. He currently trains Air Force Pilots. She was led to write the book when she felt the tug of struggle and loneliness, wondering why she felt this way. She's a strong woman of Christian faith, and vulnerably shares her struggles with mental health. Aren't we no longer supposed to be lonely when we are married? And a young marriage? She talks about isolation and loneliness in an unhealthy church regarding women. Her tendency to perfection and her realization while sitting across from a therapist how she had struggled with this for years, shoving much under the rug. And, she did the work to unpack herself, her thoughts, her limiting beliefs and the work she did on herself. The “Brainspotting” technique, and how much of what she thought was an issue with her husband or outside situations were actually internal conflicts within herself. Her drunken saga on her honeymoon flight, trying to fight a fever! Wow - powerful stuff! Today, I am chatting with Peyton Garland and our conversation is all about vulnerability and why it is so important in our friendships. Vulnerability is the foundation of any close, deep friendship. Without vulnerability, our friendships don't go as deep as they should and they remain more surface-based.We talk about why vulnerability is so important in our friendships. Even though it is so important, it can be scary to open up and let people into those parts of our messy life that we would rather remain hidden. When you allow your friends to see you both when you are up and when you are down and when you open up to them honestly about what is going on in your life, your friendships will have depth. When you share with your friends what is on your mind, your concerns and your fears, you begin to build a meaningful bond. Being vulnerable strengthens relationships. Vulnerability makes it impossible for your friendships to be fake or superficial. When you are open, honest, and raw with your friends, they can also feel safe to share their true selves with you. Letting your guard down can feel risky, but making the choice to show your friends your true self, flaws and all, is the only way to build those deep friendships we all crave and need. Peyton is the author of the book "Not So by Myself" which has been promoted by TED talk speakers and a Former White House Press Secretary. In her book she speaks openly about experiencing loneliness, finding forgiveness, and discovering that we don't need to be perfect in order to be happy or to be loved by God. Acknowledging our imperfection allows us to fully experience the grace given freely to us by God. In episode 70, Peyton Garland, author of Not So by Myself, shares her journey of church trauma leading to challenges with mental health, a hard diagnosis in a lonely season, and the moment when she shook her fist at God and discovered His messy love. There are tremendous stigmas around mental health generally, but especially in the Church, that lead us too often to fail to reflect Christ's love. How might God be inviting us to embrace messy love? "God never leaves you nor forsakes you.” I've heard that before. “Jesus will leave the 99 to come after you.” I've heard that one too. Meanwhile, fear creeps up when life hurls a season of loneliness our way, and poof! Churchy sayings hold as much weight as thin air. Believe it or not, God is cheering us on and inviting us to thrive amidst the loneliness. Yes, it's weird and scary, but this emptiness is a safe space where you get to hear the God of everything speak the loudest. WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT NOT SO BY MYSELF: One of the biggest lies we've learned to embrace is that we're alone in our pain. It keeps us trapped in a cycle of guilt, shame, and isolation so that even when we're struggling, we know how to put on a brave face and pretend everything is just fine. Peyton Garland is here for exactly none of that. She has lived with the agony of isolation, both physically and mentally, and is here to show us that just when we think we can't make it another second, there will always be a hope we can hold on to. With her approachable sense of humor and deeply rooted faith, Peyton offers us a way through our pain by sharing her own powerful story of redemption. —Wendi Nunnery, author of Good Enough: Learning to Let Go of Perfect for the Sake of Holy. Having had the chance to sit down across the table from Peyton and get to know her better, I can tell you confidently that she is for you. She is a cheerleader, already on the sidelines of your story- ready to root you on as you push further into what God has for you. Get ready to journey with her through the highs and lows of what it looks like to chase after God, deal with loneliness, and learn how to sit in the often-uncomfortable rhythms of faith and trust. There is a beauty and a transformation that only comes from learning to become comfortable with the uncomfortable - Peyton has been through that transformation and this book is proof. —Hannah Brencher, author of If You Find This Letter: My Journey to Find Purpose Through Hundreds of Letters to Strangers and Come Matter Here, TED Talk speaker, and founder of The World Needs More Love Letters." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peyton Garland is a web content writer for Family Christian, Christian Cinema, and Dove.org.
