Hello Everyone, This is just a very quick message to listeners to make a correction, or at the very least offer an apology and explanation for something that was brought to my attention regarding Season One, The story of Victor Newberry. I received some criticism which I think is well founded, now that I’ve gone back and listened, and understand how a particular segment was received. I really botched something, and I want to explain. In episode three, You’re a dead man, I described the area where Victor Newberry lived, Glen Ullin North Dakota and while doing so I brought up the North Dakota Access Pipeline demonstrations which took place in this area. It was at this point that my story-telling style obviously failed us all. If I was to bring up this topic at all, I could have, and should have, given it the attention it deserves. My intent was to give listeners, especially those from other areas of the country, or the world, an inside look into how and why so many locals here in North Dakota were so opposed to the protests. Unfortunately the segment comes off as if I am justifying all of those opinions or claiming that those reasons were fully acceptable and understandable. I don’t. In fact, I myself was partially in support of the protesters (although I did not support how it went about, with damage to property etc) and I was stunned when I found myself feeling very much alone on that stance here in rural North Dakota. And so I asked people here, why they were so opposed. A good 80% of reasons I was offered were for me poor reasons, rooted in fear and other unfortunate things. The only reasons offered to me that made any sense at all were those that I brought up in episode three, namely that people felt the financial costs for the state was high and that their friends and fathers and others who worked in law enforcement were overworked for months. Those reasons at least made sense, that is they contained some logic at least and I wanted to forward those reasons on to listeners–but they in no way fully justify an outright dismissal of the protesters cause. No way. I expected some listeners to be surprised and perhaps upset about the reasons why many North Dakotans were opposed to the protests, but I wasn’t expecting listeners to be angry at me for telling them about it. But, as I said, I realize now, I botched that segment big time. It didn’t at all come across like I had hoped. I apologize for that poorly produced segment. My kingdom for an editor. I’m working on Season 2 now and I will certainly make mistakes on that one as well. Until then, thanks for listening and I’ll talk to you again soon. I’ll leave you with a sneak peak at a scene from Season Two. Check out the Dakota Spotlight YouTube Channel. I recently created a 1976 playlist to get us all in the mood for Season 2. GO TO PLAYLIST
“The first thing I learned from my mom, and applied it to lacrosse…was passion. And I think passion is what leads to happiness.” Lyle Thompson is the all-time leading point scorer in NCAA Division 1 lacrosse history, a Tewaaraton trophy winner (our sport’s Heisman award), a pro lacrosse MVP, and NLL Champion. His legacy of success on the field will live on for generations to come. He grew up in the Onondaga Nation in New York, and was one of five children of Doloris and Jerome Thompson. Today, he and his brothers represent some of the best talent in the professional game, competing in both MLL and NLL, building large digital and social media audiences, and are bringing powerful, cultural awareness of their Native American roots to our sport. Lyle began playing lacrosse at a very early age, and on the show, we discuss how lacrosse carries spiritual and cultural experiences with the Onondaga and Native American communities. He recounts his early years playing in the backyard with his older brothers, accompanied by no net. The Thompson's couldn't afford one. All of Lyle's equipment was refurbished, yet he was the #1 High School recruit in the country...as a sophomore. On the show, Lyle shares with us his favorite workouts, how he fuels his performance, how he's changed his sleep pattern (since listening to our show, actually), and the impact of the traveling professional lacrosse circuit. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the show begins in the back third, where Lyle and I discuss his activism as a Native American professional athlete – specifically his time at the Standing Rock protests during the North Dakota Access Pipeline disputes, as well as his stance on professional sports mascots that are discriminatory the Native American communities. Suiting Up Podcast is a show where I delve into the stories of some of today’s leading athletes, entrepreneurs, and entertainers, interviewing them and unpacking the psychology of their success.
00:00:00 - We are stoked to have returning guest Daphne Pringle back on the show! And while it's not the most upbeat topic, she is indeed here to talk about cancer. Turns out, cancer evolves just like any other organism, but we don't always study in the same way. Maybe we should? Discussion ensues based on the following papers: Cancer as an evolutionary and ecological process Metastasis as an evolutionary process And somehow: Sweaty T-Shirts and Human Mate Choice 00:36:34 - Nothing like talking about cancer to make one want a carcinogen. Daphne reps her local scene with a Tastes LIke Citrus from Two Row Brewing. Ryan has a Brazilian beer called Belô Petroleum: The Great Discovery, which gives him a chance to rant about the North Dakota Access Pipeline. Charlie honors our Utahn guest with his choice of a Uinta Hop Nosh IPA. 00:50:36 - We try to be the science podcast that actually follows up on stories from time-to-time, so it's well past time for us to update y'all on what's going on with the Tasmanian devil face cancer epidemic, first discussed in episode 21. Turns out there is some good news (source 1 and source 2), thanks to evolution if you even believe in that. But they're not out of the woods yet, so if you'd like to help conservation efforts you can do so by donating to the Save The Tasmanian Devil Program. If you'd like to help cancer research more generally, you can donate to the American Associate for Cancer Research. 01:24:11 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like face cancer, you don't want to get bit but it may be hard to avoid. Charlie goes first so he can thank Patron Courtney Brooke Davis, who donates monthly on Patreon at a level where she gets designated a thesis title and her title is: Nonlinear Metastatic Transmissible Neoplastic Cancers in Ancient Marsupials from Midden Remains in Mainland Oceania. Thanks, Courtney! Daphne, since she's been on the show before, has some feedback of her own, from Jen G. who teaches at Daphne's alma mater and wants to let folks know about some improvements since Daphne was an undergrad. Ryan's paleoPOW also spawns from Daphne's first appearance because Tyler F. who wants to talk more about speciation, which is a pretty complicated topic, including wackiness such as ring species. We're now on Patreon! Please consider supporting us financially there and get cool rewards for doing so. In this week’s show our guest is Ryan Ratigan a former host of the Mystic-Skeptic Podcast, he is also an attorney, activist and naturalist. We explore his involvement with movement to support the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota. They not only want to reclaim their national sovereignty, protect their territory from corporations, but they want to preserve water resources and create a more ecological future for our descendants. As part of the Sojourners Series we explore the” Seven Generation Rule” which Ryan explains to be a source of inspiration for the principal of protecting the environment and honoring past and future generations. Ryan was a legal observer at Standing Rock and witnessed an almost military operation by the local police and and private contractors. This peaceful protestors or “protectors” have taken a stand against corporate interests since April 1, 2016. On March 6. 2017 a march on Washington was organized by The Indigenous Environmental Network. According to an article from PBS.org: “The protest comes as a federal judge in Washington is weighing a request by the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes to halt construction of the last section of the Dakota Access pipeline pending the outcomes of their lawsuit seeking to stop the project. The tribes say that section of the pipeline, which will pass under Lake Oahe, a large Missouri River reservoir, will threaten their water supply, sacred sites and religious rights. The judge is expected to rule this week.”(BLAKE NICHOLSON, ASSOCIATED PRESS March 6, 2017 at 3:28 PM EDT) Below is Ryan’s post on Facebook that inspired this show: “I see a worldwide awakening as to who we are as natural, living beings on this planet. I see the current extremes of death, insanity, destruction, etc… as the catalyst that leads to our awakening. I have met many liberated beings in the last few months and these meetings have given me a renewed spirit of hope and optimism. I see our indigenous relatives guiding us on our collective paths towards a collective evolution; spiritual, individual, and relational. I see the divine love that exists within each of us coming out of its shell. This is not an easy evolution, however it is what our hearts and souls desire.” With little media coverage please visit the following websites for more information: https://www.democracynow.org/topics/dakota_access https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2017/01/30/18796017.php https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_Access_Pipeline_protests

Sejam bem-vindos. Support the show.

James and Nnekay have been running ragged! James has a show debuting this week, Champagne White is Disastrous! (Oasis SF) and Nnekay's uterus is On. The. Mend! So they need a break. But of course they would never leave you guys high and dry! So here is a little bite sized episode of Minority Korner. Some how we still manage to cover the olympics including: that turd Ryan Lochte and dear sweet Gabby Douglas. We give an update on the North Dakota Access Pipeline... James lets us know about a Prince from Jordan seeking asylum. James lets us know about Britney's new album... we even manage to squeeze in a tiny little Quizlet Korner... about good ole Janet Jackson! We'll be back with a regular sized episode next week... in the mean time keep sharing the love and spreading the news! Links! This week we are doing the work that 24 hour "news" networks (entertainment channels) aren't doing and we're going to report some ACTUAL stories that you all should be paying attention to. But first, Nnekay has survived her surgery and she has all of the gory, delicious details, and photos, which you can't see because this is a podcast, but James has seen them. JettSetter Jones AKA James flew to LA for work for a day, and may have eaten people, does LA really turn you into a monster? Also Nnekay has a mind blowing theory about The Little Mermaid, and we may have insight as to where Hamilton star Lin Manuel Miranda might be taking the new version he's helming, or at least we have some notes on where the story should go. Nnekay is shinning light on the North Dakota Access Pipeline, which is potentially going to wreak havoc on Native American reservations. NSFW (Naked Sword Film Works) could be changing gay porn forever, and for the better, it's everything we've ever wished gay porn would be, and what we always knew it could be. Also how close is James to the gay porn industry? Quizlet Korner is all about the Louisiana Flooding nobody seems to be paying attention to, and we're giving a giant fuck you to a certain reporter attempting to out athletes at the Olympics.
