Every four years, there's a Republican convention. And every four years, there's a Democratic convention. And every four years, there's a Summer Olympics. What happens when you put them all together? You get this: “Delegates and guests, please welcome Olympic gold medalist, gymnast Gabby Douglas to lead us in the pledge of allegiance” That was the 2012 Democratic National Convention. And here's the 2004 Republican National Convention: “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome two of our favorite all-American heroes, Mary Lou Retton and Kerry Strug.” It happens every four years: Olympians at both conventions: They pledge allegiance ... They endorse candidates… They make people laugh … They make people proud. Which American Olympic champions have spoken at which conventions? And what did they say? And whom did they endorse? Winter Cup Developments  Suni Lee is a late entry and wants to get the Jaeger full named after herself! Let's go!  Watch her in our Training Camp update video here  What expectations are fair for Gabby Douglas's performance here? Omens and Prophecies: What Winter Cup developments might function as a positive omen for gymnasts' Olympic prospects? What is a good score right now? What numbers should we be looking for at Winter Cup? The new seniors: Who has emerged from the junior ranks that we should keep an eye on US Olympic Selection Procedures They're finally out! We discuss some encouraging developments and identify areas of potential controversy in the injury petition rules Someone can (theoretically) petition directly onto the Olympic team. Should that be allowed? And would that ever be used for anyone other than Simone? How might a two-event gymnast be taken into account for Olympic selection? How the open-ended women's procedures compare to the numerically specific men's, and how two selection procedures for the exact same thing can be so different Cairo World Cup The first apparatus qualifier is in the books! We discuss the Heron, a huge result for Emma Malabuyo on floor, the state of New Zealand's Olympic spots, Nina Derwael's beam win, and...gasp...is Chuso in trouble? Women's college basketball is big business—top teams bring in millions of dollars in revenue for their schools. Women's NCAA games are broadcast regularly on sports networks, and many of the top players and coaches are household names. Yet these athletes face immense pressure to be more than successful at their sport. They must also conform to expectations about gender, sexuality, and race—expectations that are often in direct contrast to success in the game. They are not supposed to have muscles that are too big, they are not supposed to be too tough, they are not supposed to be too masculine or “look like men,” and they are not supposed to be queer. A former college athlete herself, Michelle J. Manno spent a full season with a highly competitive NCAA Division I women's basketball program as one of the team's managers. In vivid detail, she takes us on the court, on the team bus, into the locker room, and to championship games to show the intense dedication that these women give to the game. She found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that these extremely talented women were strictly policed around the presentation of their gender and sexuality, especially the athletes who were Black. They were routinely monitored, banned from engaging in certain activities, and often punished for behavior that put their queerness, Blackness, and masculinity on display. Convincingly conforming to conventional expectations of gender and sexuality—from the clothes they wore to the people they dated—was yet another challenge at which they needed to excel. Importantly, Manno also highlights several well-known contemporary professional athletes—Brittney Griner, Serena Williams, Gabby Douglas, and Caster Semenya, among others—to show that fame and performing at the highest levels in sport does not protect women athletes from having to navigate the conflicting and often contradictory expectations of identity. A riveting portrait of an elite basketball program, Denied: Women, Sports, and the Contradictions of Identity (NYU Press, 2023) will forever change our understanding of women athletes and the sports they play. Pan Ams Event Finals Did we just see the best Cheng in gymnastics history from Rebeca Andrade? We discuss, with comparisons to the best from Cheng Fei and Simone Biles. Should the judges have given this a 10 E score? Do we want to live in a world where this isn't a 10 in execution? Plus, the best moments from the rest of the event finals at Pan Ams, including titles from Zoe Miller and Kaliya Lincoln, controversy in the beam final, and the comedy stylings of Franchesca Santi and Jordan Chiles. Mini-Commissions We have two mini-commissions this week! First, from Beth, we have a mini-commission on Gabby Douglas. We discuss the historic significance of her return, the latest skills she's posting on socials, and how her 2016 routines would hold up against the 2023 US worlds team. Next, from Jay, a mini-commission on Kristie Phillips being left off the 1988 Olympic team. We discuss the greatness of Kristie Phillips as a performer, the data on why she actually should have been on that Olympic team, and the syndrome of TV commentary affecting your memory of how a gymnast actually performed.
