In the pantheon of comedians, Steven Wright surely deserves a column or three, and in today's crossword Robert Charlton has chosen a great quote to illustrate the point. If you are unfamiliar with Steven Wright, stop whatever you're doing right now (unless it's listening to this podcast -- wait until you're finished) to head over to your favorite streaming source (or library: don't forget your local library!) and be prepared to be entertained. Speaking of entertaining, the entire crossword was just that, and educational as well. Who knew 62A, Flower whose name means "flame" in ancient Greek, PHLOX? (OK, Jean did). And who knew 2D, 12-time Olympic swimming medalist Ryan ___, LOCHTE? (Yes, again, Jean). But the point is, for at least one of these clues, Jean didn't know it and others might not have as well. In this episode, Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Ryan Lochte takes listeners on an inspiring journey from his humble beginnings in upstate New York to becoming one of the most decorated athletes in swimming history. He shares vivid memories of his early passion for the water, starting at the age of three when he first jumped into a pool with joy, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to the sport. Lochte's story highlights not only the challenges he faced, from moving to the competitive Florida swimming scene to being outpaced by his peers, but also his unwavering determination to rise above every obstacle. He details the relentless work ethic, creative training methods, and mental toughness that propelled him to the top. Lochte also opens up about his mindset throughout his career, constantly pushing himself to be better, even after breaking world records and winning Olympic gold. He speaks candidly about the importance of short-term and long-term goals, listening to mentors, and maintaining a fun, positive approach in life. Lochte's reflections on competition with Michael Phelps, overcoming failures, and learning from his past are filled with wisdom for athletes and non-athletes alike. Now focused on family, entrepreneurship, and giving back through swim clinics and motivational speaking, Lochte shares how he continues to challenge himself, inspire others, and build a legacy for his children. Takeaways: Starting at a young age, a deep passion for an activity can set the foundation for lifelong dedication and success, as demonstrated by an early love for swimming that persisted despite challenges.Moving to a more competitive environment can initially lead to setbacks, but resilience and adaptability are key to overcoming new challenges and regaining top performance. To excel, going beyond the standard training regimen by adding extra practice and innovative techniques can provide a competitive edge and lead to exceptional achievements.Maintaining a mindset of starting at the bottom and striving to improve every day helps in staying motivated and achieving high levels of success, regardless of past accomplishments.Setting both short-term and long-term goals, and focusing on making both personal and team improvements, can drive better performance and foster a positive, supportive environment.Perfecting technique from a young age and combining it with strength and endurance training can lead to mastery in any field, demonstrating the value of a solid foundation and balanced approach.Embracing failure as a learning opportunity rather than a setback, and continuously working on personal growth, helps in overcoming obstacles and achieving long-term success.

Welcome to Episode 29! We start with coverage of Brittney Griner in Russia, the WNBA player arrested for hard drugs and currently on trial. While a sad situation, we are hearing the familiar liberal media talking point that there's an unjust wage gap between men's and women's basketball which we strongly disagree with - the NBA makes more money because it's watched more; it makes more money than the NHL too. We then compare the treatment of Ryan Lochte by the media to Griner, and wonder why the two were treated so differently - isn't Lochte supposed to have white privilege? (0:00-14:15) We transition to discuss how Biden is being lauded by the media for simply reading the letter from Griner's wife. In a similar situation, former President Trump threatened Sweden with a trade war if they didn't give back rapper A$AP Rocky. Biden's weakness is stark contrast to Trump, who was often criticized for statements and strategic moves that turned out to be prescient. A perfect example of this is when Trump was laughed at for saying Germany was too reliant on Russian gas - now their economy and society might shut down. (14:15-23:45) Elon Musk on Friday cancelled the Twitter deal. We theorize why: is this negotiating, is he trying to take down Twitter by catching them under-reporting bots, did he want to expose them, or is there something else at work? We discuss a variety of possible reasons for the news and read from his letter pulling out of the deal, a rarity for him. (24:20-37:10) Next we discuss how The Orville, a Star Trek-esque show created by Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame, has gone woke. They had an entire transgender episode and we were offended at how easy and simple they made the choice to transition seem. We do not believe this is appropriate for children to watch. We discuss another show that's gone woke, The Boys, before finishing up discussing how absurd it is that young children are being brought to drag queen events and parades where participants are mostly naked. (37:10-1:02:30) After a Sports Corner in which TB gloats about the Yankees success, especially over the Red Sox (1:02:30-1:07:25) we discuss a recent Tucker Carlson interview with Ben Smith, formerly of Buzzfeed and the New York Times, before finishing up with a ReWokeables on how the media continues to call Hispanic conservatives right wing - this time Mayra Flores and the "Rise of the Far Right Latina" - what happened to using LatinX, New York Times? For the next two weeks It Was a Thing on TV goes Olympic as we talk about some Olympics related topics. First, we start off our coverage is one of the biggest flops of all time. Three channels of 24/7 Olympic coverage for $125 in 1992? What's the catch? There are a few. At least those who bought in to the Olympic Triplecast have a Triplecast remote control which likely doesn't do anything nowadays. Then, Our Olympic extravaganza continues with a look into the life and loves of Ryan Lochte, the semi-quotable and infamous star of the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympic games. The first half of this edition is about What Would Ryan Lochte Do?, while the second half is mostly about Lochte's wit and wis-dumb including interviews and quotes said by the man himself. Jeah! Also, remember to follow our socials on @ItWasAThingOnTV and any e-mails or show feedback can be sent to itwasathingontv@gmail.com Jeah!

Ryan Lochte is the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history. After tarnishing his reputation in Rio in 2016, Lochte is gunning to make it back to the Games one last time. But, at the age of 36, that's no easy task. For Burnsed's story in Sports Illustrated, – available to read (and listen to) in Apple News+ – he spent time with Lochte, watched his grueling practices, and spoke with him about why he sees his road to redemption ending in Tokyo.

Today's guest is 12 time Olympic Champion Ryan Lochte. Fair or unfair he has been associated with swimming as much as poor judgement during his Olympics in Brazil. I believe in this conversation Ryan is giving us a chance to just know Ryan. Who doesn't make mistakes, we just didn't make them on a world stage. How is he creating the output to go for his fifth Olympics, train, father two young children and show up as a husband? Ryan shares how he trains now vs. then, and what mindset it takes to keep showing up even during your darkest times. He has not had an easy path and yet he still stands/swims. What I learned and heard from Ryan is don't misconstrue how deeply he feels, and deadly focused a kind happy go lucky guy can be. Enjoy. To train with Ryan go to Loch'd in training at www.lochdintraining.com You are able to literally train WITH Ryan twice a week. 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte looked a little rough at the recent San Antonia Pro Swim, swimming 2:02.03 in the 200m IM, but he always swims slowly in-season, and Caeleb Dressel swam slowly, and they're both in Coach Gregg Troy's clutches. In sum, we know they're doing hard work--certainly broken down at this point in their training cycle. "If there was an 800 IM at the Olympics, I would be swimming it," Ryan Lochte said in his last Gold Medal Minute back in October 2020. He also revealed his Olympic Trials schedule, which was the standard Lochte schedule we've always seen. He said, "At this point, with all of the work I'm doing? 400 and 200 IM, 200 back, 200 free, 100 fly..." I'm still bullish on Lochte's chances to make the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team this summer. Lochte has mastery in the 200 IM. He’s going to turn heads at the U.S. Olympic Trials. PREDICTIONS Lochte makes Team USA in the 200 IM, dropping a solid 1:55 low…barely edging Shaine Casas, Michael Andrew, Chase Kalisz and Andrew Seliskar. It’s going to be a tight race... Of course, you know I want everyone to make the Olympic Team. But who cares what i think? I want to know what you think. Give me your best swimming analysis.
Eric Shanteau is a 2x Olympian, World Champion swimmer, and cancer destroyer. He also holds the American Record for Most Times Getting 3rd at US Olympic Trials (5x) as well as the AR for Most Events Getting 3rd at OT's (4 events; 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 Breast, 200 Breast). Shanteau grew up swimming for Swim Atlanta and Chris Davis and was one of the four Auburn Tigers (George Bovell (Episode #111), Doug Van Wie, and Kurt Cady) that went 32-4-4 in their NCAA swimming career. That's 32 dual meet wins (and 0 losses), 4 SEC Championships, and 4 NCAA Titles -- completely undefeated. In the mid-2000's, while Shanteau grew into one of the world's best IM'ers, so did two other young Americans. Just so happens they turned out to be the two most decorated swimmers ever: Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. At the 2004 Olympic Trials, Shanteau placed 3rd behind Phelps and Lochte. He also placed 3rd in the 400 IM behind Phelps and Erik Vendt. The same thing happened at the 2008 Olympic Trials: 3rd in the 200 IM behind Phelps and Lochte. 3rd in the 100 Breast. Finally, his opportunity came in the 200 Breast, qualifying for his first Olympics in 2008. Prior to the Games, Shanteau was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He opted to swim before going under the knife. Shanteau popped off at World Championships in 2009. The famous Rome meet. He won a Bronze medal in the 200 IM and a Silver in the 200 Breast which was an American Record of 2:07.42. In 2012, he qualified 2nd behind Brendan Hansen in the 100 Breast which led him to win an Olympic gold medal in the 400 Medley Relay by swimming on the morning relay. Also, at the 2012 Olympic Trials, he got -- you guessed it -- 3rd yet again -- this time in the 200 Breast. Shanteau married another Auburn All-American, Jeri Moss. 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte is firmly in Coach Gregg Troy's clutches. This is positive. The recipe is old, well proven, and Lochte's training with a world-class crew which includes Caeleb Dressel, arguably the most talented swimmer on earth. Lochte gets real in this GMM takeover of the SwimSwam podcast, and I'm bullish on Lochte's prospects next summer after talking with him. We covered a lot of territory, so there is much to unpack here. "At this point, with all of the work I'm doing,' Lochte said regarding his 2021 Olympic Trials schedule, "400 and 200 IM, 200 back, 200 free, 100 fly..." You heard it here. Everything is on the table as of October 2020. I pushed back saying no one would fault him for dropping the 400 IM. Lochte dug-in regarding his schedule, saying "Yeah, the normal." Lochte, notorious for swimming slowly in-season, will race at the U.S. Open unrested. "I won't race in a training suit. I will suit-up (in a TYR techsuit), but I'm tired (from Troy training)." We sat down with the #6 recruit in the class of 2021, Micayla Cronk. Micayla is a true Floridian with deep swimming roots, having been coached by Kristin Lochte, Ryan Lochte's sister, in her formative years. USA TODAY Sports Olympics reporter Nicole Auerbach is joined on the telephone by USAT sports editor David Meeks to dive into the ever-changing story of U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte and his three Olympic teammates and their encounter with Brazilian security guards at a gas station in Rio de Janeiro. David offers the latest findings in the investigation, which tilt the story toward the possibility that Brazilian police, like Lochte, might have embellished their story. The pair also discuss how Lochte was dropped from sponsors, how the media, in general, covered this story all wrong, and how the Rio Games should not be remembered mostly for this non-Games-related altercation. The story by Meeks and Taylor Barnes can be read at: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/rio-2016/2016/08/21/investigation-ryan-lochte-rio-olympics-authorities/89082232.
