If you've already tuned in to one of those Christmas music stations on the radio, there's a good chance you have already heard the holiday classic "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" this year. Gayla Peevey, the Oklahoma-born original singer of the 1953 song, joins The Oklahoma Today Podcast this week as our featured guest. The song helped raise money to buy the OKC Zoo's first hippo, Matilda. Now the zoo is planning to build a statue a statue honoring Gayla and Matilda in the next year or two. We talked with Gayla about the honor, her history with the song, and even the Moo Deng sensation. Speaking of the OKC Zoo, Safari Lights is also now open for the season, and we got a sneak peek of that as well. Also on this week's episode, the editors discuss which exotic animal they'd want to find under their own Christmas tree, and Oklahoma Tourism's Kaitlyn Rivas joins us as a special guest host. You won't want to miss it!

Lyric Theatre presents: "The Rocky Horror Show" - What better way to celebrate Halloween than at the Majestic Theatre with the cult classic, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW.This rock concert-style show is a ridiculous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 30's through the 60's, and tells the story of the newly engaged Brad & Janet, who get caught in a storm and find themselves seeking shelter at the eerie mansion of mad scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, where they meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker, a creepy butler, and a Frankenstein-style muscle man named Rocky. Do you know the Oklahoma ties to the Hippopotamus song? Gayla Peevey was born on March 8, 1943. This former singer and child star was from Oklahoma City, OK. She is best known for the song, "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas," which she recorded at the age of 10. The Oklahoma City Zoo gained some notoriety due to the song. After Gayla received a Hippo as a gift, she donated Matilda the Hippo to the Zoo. Matilda lived out her days there until at the age of 47 she was being transferred to Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom in Orlando FL. My guest is Secretary Justin Brown. In June 2019, Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Justin Brown as Director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, the state's largest agency by workforce. In March 2020, Governor Stitt further appointed Brown to the position of Cabinet Secretary of Oklahoma Human Services. As CEO of a regional senior housing company prior to these appointments, Brown built a deep experience in organizational leadership, finance and strategic planning & execution. With this experience, Brown is well suited to build a vision based on a customer first mentality, motivating the team to execute on a vision of serving the State of Oklahoma's most vulnerable citizens. As a strong relationship builder, Brown was uniquely qualified to position the Department of Human Services as a collaborative agency that engages with partners across the state to serve together. In addition to having built a passion for serving seniors with Alzheimer's Disease through his prior profession, and Board of Directors engagement with the Alzheimer's Association, Brown has built a life of service to children through non-profit service including the OU Children's Hospital Foundation, the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, the OKC Zoo, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, among others. He and his wife, Kelly, have been married for 19 years and have two children, Hannah and Ford. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 2, 2020 is: pachyderm PAK-ih-derm noun : any of various nonruminant mammals (such as an elephant, a rhinoceros, or a hippopotamus) of a former group (Pachydermata) that have hooves or nails resembling hooves and usually thick skin; especially : elephant Examples: "'Rhino births are significant events at the Zoo so we are thrilled to share news of Niki's pregnancy and cannot wait to welcome this new addition to our herd,' said Rachel Emory, OKC Zoo curator of pachyderms." — The Oklahoman (Oklahoma City), 15 Feb. 2020 "The elephants, though, still needed to reach the river. They hewed close to the old route, the one imprinted on generations of pachyderm brains…." — Hannah Beech and Muktita Suhartono, The New York Times, 16 July 2020 Did you know? Pachydermos in Greek means literally "having thick skin" (figuratively, it means "dull" or "stupid"). It's from pachys, meaning "thick," and derma, meaning "skin." In the late 1700s, the French naturalist Georges Cuvier adapted the Greek term as pachyderme for any one of a whole assemblage of hoofed animals having thickish skin: elephants, hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, tapirs, horses, pigs, and more. English speakers learned the word from French in the early 1800s. The adjective pachydermatous means "of or relating to the pachyderms" or "thickened" (referring to skin). Not too surprisingly, it also means "callous" or "insensitive" (somewhat unfairly especially to elephants, which are actually known to be rather sensitive).
