Linda Hogan is an American poet, writer, academic, environmentalist and member of the Chickasaw Nation. Intimately connected to her political and spiritual concerns, Hogan's poetry deals with issues such as the environment and eco-feminism, the relocation of Native Americans, and historical narratives, including oral histories. Ahtna Athabascan elder Katie John's efforts to get the state of Alaska to open up subsistence fishing in her Native Village of Batzulnetas turned into a series of legal and policy decisions that continue to protect Alaska Native fishing rights to this day. Daring Chickasaw aviator and legislator Eula Pearl Carter Scott was the youngest person in the country to fly an airplane solo. By age 14, she was working as a commercial pilot. She retired from flying to go on to work as the tribe's Community Health Representative, and later as a tribal legislator. We'll learn about the contributions of these and other notable Native women. On this episode I chatted with Bob Ricks. Bob is an American law enforcement agent and politician from Texas and Oklahoma. He has worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Governor of Oklahoma and in local law enforcement. He is best known as the FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge during the 1993 Waco Siege and as FBI Special Agent in Charge during the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing investigation. Bob played golf at Baylor before starting his career in the FBI. Following his retirement from federal service, Ricks served as the Oklahoma Secretary of Safety and Security under Governor of Oklahoma Frank Keating. He was Secretary during the Keating's entire term as governor, from 1995 to 2003. Concurrent with his service as Secretary, he was also appointed by Keating as Commissioner of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. Ricks served as Chief of Police in Edmond, Oklahoma 2003–2017. On this episode I chatted with Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye Artistic Director of the OKC Ballet. Ryan is a choreographer, arts advocate, teacher, and Oklahoma City Ballet's seventh Artistic Director since its founding in 1963. Originally from central Maine, Jolicoeur-Nye graduated from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and danced professionally for Eugene Ballet, Ballet Idaho, Kansas City Ballet, plus many guest roles throughout North America before retiring from the stage in 2016. In 2018, he was named Artistic Director of Northwest Arkansas Ballet Theatre. Then joined Oklahoma City Ballet in August 2020 as a Rehearsal Director. Jolicoeur-Nye took on the role of acting artistic director in January 2022 and was officially named Artistic Director of Oklahoma City Ballet in October 2022. On this episode I chatted to the Maestro Alexander Mickelthwate about his journey from Germany to OKC. Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany, Mickelthwate grew up in a home filled with classical music. He received his degree from the Peabody Institute of Music, and has worked with orchestras in Atlanta, Winnipeg and Los Angeles. He is Music Director Emeritus of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Canada, and in 2022, accepted the position of Music Director for the prestigious Bear Valley Music Festival in Bear Valley, California. In early 2023, Mickelthwate traveled to Hanoi where he was Guest Conductor at the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. Since he's been in Oklahoma, Mickelthwate has received numerous awards and honors, including being twice-named “The Face of Music” by 405 Magazine.
