I will be welcoming Cliff to the show. Cliff is from Louisiana and has hunted his whole life. Cliff had an encounter with a wolf like creature he stumbled on while hunting. He said “I don’t know…I just don’t know but this thing terrified me, when it stood up it was 13-15 feet away from me and it was big. It turned and looked at me and it felt evil, I raised my gun and it took off. I have never seen anything like it before and I have never seen anything run as fast as this thing did.   FABRIK, who you'll recognize from their song "Black Lake" played on our outro, is working on their second album. Brainstorming Whirligig Shrug: baby/child shrug knitting pattern by Stefanie Japel. I knit one back in 2011 for my cousin Bella In My Travels I gave an overview of my 10 day trip to Barcelona, Spain and Portugal Packing in a carry-on for 10 Days 3 pairs pants- black and grey leggings & 1 pair jeans 8 shirts vest with hood denim jacket 1 handknit shawl & 1 cotton scarf sneakers, shortie boots and slide sneakers. Socks, underwear 1 pair of sleep shorts too cold to wear- slept in leggings I had plenty of clothing. Washed clothes at my friend's house on Friday before we went to Porto. Could have done w/ fewer shirts but it was nice to have variety. Wish I had wool socks for bed. Lessons Learned Didn’t need my shortie boots. Sneakers and casual sneakers would have been sufficient. Denim jacket and vest were good to mix and match & good layering options. Loved having my prescription sunglasses! I could bring less jewelry if I plan to buy some. I never understood the point of packing cubes-  but my mom sent some over and I'm sold. They really do compress things more than I thought possible and kept my small suitcase organized. Overall Travel Highlights & Safety Tips Booked 3 apartments in the 2 cities through AirBnB all worked out great! Booked 2 excursions in Spain through them - 3 hour Bike Tour & Paella Making Experience Separate beds/rooms meant that I didn't get Laura's cold. Clean out your wallet before you leave. Take photos of what’s in your wallet in case it’s stolen. My wallet stolen before we got to our first apartment. Because it was fast and easy to call and cancel, the thieves didn't get in any charges on my cards. I had new cards & a license by the time I returned home Carry wallet and passport on your person during airport and train travel. Always zip your purse. Keep passport separate from wallet. Was happy I packed Airborne & my water bottle. It was easy to fill and carry (saved me money too). Downloading google map of city in advance was a huge win. You can find your blue dot on map even without WiFi. WiFi in lots of places. Cafes, restaurants etc. makes traveling without cell service possible. Carry-on suitcase was plenty to manage through cobblestone streets and many flights of stairs in metro stations. I might have thought of bringing a larger suitcase if it were "free" but that would have been a bad idea. Brought external battery back up for phone. Used at least most days. My phone was in airplane mode except for 2 small needs for cellular. But I used it to take lots of photos. Internet and apps on WiFi as needed. Bought European 220 plug that supports 2 usb cords which worked for all of the electronics I needed to charge. Worked well but I didn't like that it lights up green when plugged in. Not good if want to charge phone by bed. Barcelona  The bike tour and paella making class were huge highlights We visited All You Knit Is Love Yarn shop. I bought a skein of Murmur yarn & 2 50gram skeins of Hjertegarn. Sagrada Família. Passion facade done this time! First time went in. Breathtaking! Visited Montserrat. Audio of boys choir at end. Porto  Love the street art in Porto. Loved that Porto is so walkable. Can’t get too lost. Loved small winding streets with bright colors and laundry hanging. First AirBnB gave us really great recommendations. Ora Viva= favorite restaurant. You can easily hop on a river cruise. They sell tickets right down by the river. Cable cars/ gondola brings you to top of bridge. Fun ride! Fun with Laura taking photos Graham’s port wine tour. Knitting No trouble with metal or bamboo circulars in any airline. The shawl project & one pair of socks was plenty for a busy trip of sightseeing, knowing I'd buy some more yarn there. The boys loved the giraffes I crocheted for them. Marta’s oldest made me a sign that said "Welcome Home" in English and had a drawing of a girl in a giraffe costume like the stuffy I made Aila for Christmas that he saw in my Instagram feed. If you're traveling, consider bringing  an FO you want great photos of. KAL News Slay the Stash 2019 Each month you can declare a skein of yarn to knit/crochet/weave to its very end. The design of the shawl is inspired by the relationship I have with my best friend, Kris. She often compares us to Grace & Frankie (from the Netflix original series)- best friends who love and need each other but on the surface have nothing in common. You'll see that play out in the shawl where the openness of the lace is offset by the solid fabric of the garter stitch—completely different types of stitches and fabric that complement each other well. Greg McLaughlin, President PGA TOUR Champions talks about the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai returning to the Big Island of Hawaii for the 22nd year. It's the season opening event for the PGA TOUR Champions with official event champions of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, winners of the majors from recent years and professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. Played on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, the Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 16 and Wednesday January 17 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 18-19-20 is the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast on NBC Golf Channel. It's a 1.8 million purse. Bernhard Langer defends. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate tournament week for $25 Tournament Day and $ 45 Tournament Week Pass . I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.
