In the final chapter of our four-part conversation with two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, we explore the deeper reflections and enduring values that have shaped his remarkable life in and beyond golf. Lee shares candid insights into the transition from the PGA Tour to the Champions Tour, the physical and mental adjustments required, and the motivations that keep him competitive today. We hear entertaining stories of his playoff victories, including dramatic moments with Bart Bryant and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and a memorable double hole-in-one moment with Scott McCarron that had everyone talking. Lee also opens up about his love for skiing, his passion for pickleball, and the importance of maintaining health and fitness to continue chasing new goals — like reaching the milestone of 1,000 professional events.Beyond the trophies and tournaments, Lee reflects on his commitment to giving back, notably through his long-standing involvement with College Golf Fellowship, where he's impacted the lives of many young players. As always, we close with our signature three questions, offering Lee the chance to share what he would have done differently, the Mulligan he'd love to take, and most importantly, how he hopes to be remembered.Join us for a heartfelt and inspiring conclusion to Lee Janzen's story — a testament to resilience, faith, friendship, and the timeless values that define a true champion.Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text.Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. In this episode of Next on the Tee, we're joined by 2019 Charles Schwab Cup Champion Scott McCarron, as he gears up for the new season. Scott shares insights into his current health and the state of his game as he prepares for another competitive year. We also discuss the accessibility and visibility challenges the Champions Tour faces, despite the exceptional talent and fan engagement from its players. We explore why the PGA Tour seems to treat the Champions Tour as an afterthought and how that might change when Tiger Woods turns 50 and potentially joins the field. Scott reflects on his leadership role within the Tour, offering his perspective on the upcoming changes to the PGA Tour in 2026, including the reduction of full-time Tour cards and the impact of LIV Golf's emergence has had on player earnings. We then take a deep dive into Scott's impressive record at the Senior PGA Championship, a tournament where he's consistently performed well, and discuss his chances at Congressional Country Club this year. He also reflects on his past successes in Atlanta, where he has multiple victories at TPC Sugarloaf, and how playing on a course with such great memories impacts his confidence. In a fun hypothetical, Scott answers the question: if he could turn back time, regain peak health, and take one more shot at a title—where would it be? Finally, we switch gears to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the 1980 Miracle on Ice, one of the greatest moments in sports history. Scott shares his thoughts on whether it stands as the greatest sporting event of his lifetime or if another moment holds that top spot. Tune in for a compelling conversation covering everything from the Champions Tour's future to unforgettable sports moments with one of golf's most respected voices, Scott McCarron.

In Part 2 of Episode 30 I'm joined by a pair of Tim's...Simpson and Gaestel. Tim Simpson is known for being one of the all-time great ball strikers. He won 5 times on the PGA Tour, had 82 Top 10s, and the GOAT Jack Nicklaus even marveled at how frequently Tim would shoot low scores. Tim has overcome several physical ailments throughout his playing career. He won Comeback Player of the Year on the PGA and Champions tours. He beat Lyme disease and now he's battling a rare form of blood cancer. You'll hear how his positive attitude is going to lead him to beating it plus his thoughts on the PGA Championship, his relationship with his father, how Raymond Floyd intimidated players with his eyes, remembering Payne Stewart's 1999 US Open victory, and working with the great Sam Snead. Tim Gaestel is a former Sergeant with the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. As fate would have it, Tim was being sworn into the military on September 11th, 2001. Hear him talk about how that day unfolded and becoming even more driven to charge into the fight. We hear about his deployment to Afghanistan and the IED that exploded and sent shrapnel into his back as he and his peers were headed to Baghdad. Tim also talks about how golf saved his life when he returned home, how the game brought him and his father back together, his experience playing alongside show favorite Scott McCarron, and his fight to save a local municipal course, Lions Municipal Course, in Austin, Texas. John Mascari weighs in on the state of professional golf and where he thinks it'll be 5-10 years down the road. We hear the best pieces of advice he's been given in his business and golf careers and if the golf ball rollback is much to do about nothing. Scott McCarron shares his thoughts on golf becoming more of a worldwide game and if Rory was right in saying we could see a Premier League like structure. He also shared his thoughts on what it will be like when Tiger comes to play out on the Champions Tour, and we looked back on his first PGA Tour victory and how Johnny Miller's comments on the practice range fueled him to turn a 1 shot lead over Tom Watson into a 5 stroke victory. We finish off hearing about a great property he recently bought down in the Bahamas in Jack's Bay Club which features courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Rick Fehr won twice out on the PGA Tour. He is also one of the most decorated amateur players in the last 40 years. He helped BYU win a national championship and he was low Amateur in the 1984 Masters and US Open. Rick teaches in the Seattle area. We focused our conversation on the mental side of the game. We talked about how to get into a flow state or "the zone". He shared tips for how to figure out which tips on the internet are good and which ones may be leading us down the wrong path. Rick was annually one of the best putters on Tour and provided some drills to help us make more putts. Todd Kolb rounds out the show. He's one of the Top Instructors in the north-central part of the country. He has written a wonderful book titled, The Bad Lie, Why Traditional Golf Instruction is Failing You and What To Do Instead. We delve into why that's the case and what his Vertical Line Swing System is. We get tips for how to hit a high, soft flop shot, how to gain more distance off the tee for those of us north of 50, and how to get your hips to turn versus sway in your downswing.

Finally, major championship season has arrived. This Wednesday episode will be a rollercoaster of a preview without much nuts-and-bolts preview-y discussion. We start with Andy’s big debut as a walking reporter for a broadcast and some of the technical difficulties of his maiden voyage. Also, did a mistake he made on the first tee impact a play?! Then we get to Jay Monahan’s rough media tour to announce his new rights deal on Monday morning and the tough spot he never should have been in on live TV. The Tour’s initial response to coronavirus is also reviewed. A new sponsor read somehow leads to a panning of the latest Scott McCarron anchoring footage. We make one-and-done picks and also lament the reported soft conditions this week that will be a changeup from the prior two legs of the Florida swing. What’s the best grass for demonstrating short game skill and, setting aside the marketing, do we actually love the golf product of The Players? Why will Carson be there again on Wednesday? Lots of questions before Rory and Brandel’s comments on the PGL are discussed and a closing with a Masters fact of the day on Augusta National’s original 19th hole.

Greg McLaughlin, President PGA TOUR Champions talks about the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai returning to the Big Island of Hawaii for the 22nd year. It's the season opening event for the PGA TOUR Champions with official event champions of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, winners of the majors from recent years and professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. Played on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, the Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 16 and Wednesday January 17 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 18-19-20 is the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast on NBC Golf Channel. It's a 1.8 million purse. Bernhard Langer defends. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate tournament week for $25 Tournament Day and $ 45 Tournament Week Pass . I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.

From then through 1976 he served as head professional at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois.Jim's national and world-wide best selling instructional book, "The Plane Truth for Golfers", published by McGraw-Hill, spring 05, was his first book. Its mission was to present the science that there are two sets of fundamentals that govern all golf swings rather than just one set.
