Andy is off in Scotland and calls in after a late night at the pub to join Brendan for this Monday morning recording. After some unplanned promo for Fried Egg Golf Club, this episode starts with a recognition of the world's best player, Joaquin Niemann, following his third win of the year on LIV. The two compare the three wins of Niemann and Rory McIlroy and wonder who the best player of 2025 truly is. From there, the conversation shifts to an extended Champs Tour Minute, as a power outage at the Zurich Classic allowed everyone to get some bonus coverage from Zinger and Papa on Golf Channel. PJ is overjoyed that the greater viewing public now sees his point about Zinger being kept in a studio as opposed to on the road watching Jerry Kelly outlast Ernie Els at TPC Sugarloaf. Andy and Brendan then move to the Chevron, won by Mao Saigo in a five-way playoff, the largest in LPGA history. Brendan points out the egregious backboarding opportunity available on the 18th hole and Andy shares some local reporting from The Woodlands about the lack of advertising for the event. On the PGA Tour, social media sensation Ben Griffin and NFL Draft pundit Andrew Novak teamed up for their first PGA Tour win(s) at the Zurich Classic, beating the Hojgaard twins following some interesting drops on the 72nd hole. This episode quickly runs through some news to wrap things up, including the latest from Michael Block as he looks to qualify for Quail Hollow.
Jerry Kelly and Emma Carpenter joined the show this AM. Kelly, a stalwart on PGA TOUR Champions dove into what has made him a better golfer at 58, how his competitive streak took shape, how equipment has brought the athlete into golf, how amazing Bernhard Langer still is and he talked about his partnership with Cologuard and how important the work they are doing to help early screening for colon cancer. Carpenter made her first appearance and discussed the top teams and players in the collegiate game and shared some dark horses for teams to keep an eye on as the NCAA Championship come into focus.Gary Williams' opening monologue on Arnold Palmer and his importance led off the show and we also shared team picks for the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational, our Club Five standings and of course, our dogs of the week.
3x PGA Tour winner and 12-time PGA Tour Champions winner Jerry Kelly joins to discuss what it was like to compete against Tiger Woods in his prime. We also break down current topics like slow play, TGL & Signature events on the PGA Tour and whether they are good or bad for the game.
This Monday episode starts with an apology from Andy on behalf of the entire crew, as no Champions Tour picks were given ahead of the SAS Championship. Andy and Brendan are joined by Producer PJ to then recap Jerry Kelly's win in the final regular season event, coming just a week after he withdrew due to arthritis. PJ also chimes in with an update about Ángel Cabrera's status for the Schwab Cup Playoffs, leading to a spittake from Brendan. With the Champs Tour wrapped, Andy and Brendan then recap Matt McCarty's win at the Black Desert Championship. They talk through McCarty's path to the PGA Tour, winning three times on the KFT but hanging around those events into the summer in order to lock up the No. 1 spot on the points list rather than getting PGA Tour starts. This leads into a discussion about the need for more Korn Ferry Tour grads playing during the FedEx Fall, as this year's group will not get to play on the PGA Tour until January now. The two also wonder about TV ratings for the Black Desert, which was deemed a "fun event" on a new, different course for the PGA Tour, and how the pace-of-play issues can be fixed after another Saturday morning cut. A mid-episode Swag Sports Minute recaps a big Bears win in London, another Browns loss, and the possibility of a Mets-Guardians World Series beginning next week. To wrap things up, Andy and Brendan give props to Dan Bradbury for his win at Le Golf National, and recap the Buick LPGA Shanghai, won by Ruoning Yin.
In Part 2 of Episode 40, I'm joined by Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer and Golf Writers Association of America member, Gary D'Amato, along with multiple-time Tour winner Guy Boros, son of World Golf Hall of Famer Julius Boros. Gary, a member of the Golf Writers Association of America for over 40 years, has covered every Masters since 1993 and was inducted into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. While Whistling Straits and Erin Hills are well-known, Gary highlights several other hidden gem courses in Wisconsin, a state that often flies under the radar as a golf destination. He also shares stories of playing alongside some of Wisconsin's greatest golfers, including Steve Stricker, Andy North, Jerry Kelly, and Sherri Steinhauer. Additionally, Gary recounts one of his favorite Masters moments—following Jack Nicklaus as he nearly captured his seventh Green Jacket in 1998—and discusses the book he co-wrote with Packers legend Chester Marcol on the history of the Packers-Bears rivalry. Guy Boros grew up traveling on Tour with his father, Julius, a three-time major champion who won the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. Julius held the record as the oldest major champion, winning the 1968 PGA at 48 years old, until Phil Mickelson surpassed him a few years ago at nearly 51. Guy also found significant success on Tour, particularly in Canada, where he won the Canadian Order of Merit in 1991. His first PGA Tour victory came at the 1996 Greater Vancouver Classic, which he won by a stroke over Lee Janzen. In our conversation, Guy reflects on how his game seemed to elevate whenever he crossed the border, the experience of growing up around the great players of the 60s and 70s while traveling with his father, and his victory at the Vancouver Classic. He also shares insights from playing in this year's U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club and the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.
We conclude our 7-part series with Bernhard Langer by looking back on his final two Senior majors including his win at the 2023 U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld. He took down Wisconsin natives Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly to capture his 12th major and his record-breaking 46th win on the Champions Tour, surpassing Hale Irwin's total by one. Bernhard was quite candid in this episode about his putting woes that plagued him throughout his career and give us insights into how he overcame the "Y" word. He provides a thoughtful response to our query aimed at understanding what has made him so great. Bernhard Langer has demonstrated to us what a generous and giving person he is and a tough competitor too as he concludes his amazing life story, "FORE the Good of the Game."Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNzM3Mjc1LnJzcw About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. I've long been interested in rhetoric, the techniques of persuasive argument, propaganda; the use of passionate language. It's why I collect publishers' sales and bookseller catalogues, I'm sure! Ever since first laying hands on the bookseller catalogues that Jerry Kelly has, over the years, designed for the likes of Jonathan A. Hill and Glenn Horowitz, I've held the conviction that he is one of America's truly great book designers. It's hard to describe this conviction. His work just looks and feels right to me. "Read me." it says. "I'm worth looking at." It's worth looking at of course because it's a product of years of dedicated study, and passionate practice. These kind of deeply precious objects don't just appear out of nowhere. Take the type for example. Its selection, how it augments the arguments and value propositions put forward in these catalogues; how it adds to their credibility, their conviction, makes the words seem more important. Or the aptness of the paper choices, their relevant colours, the statements made by their weights and textures. The way the choice of ink pigments clarify and emphasize. It all burnishes the larger persuasive effect. But enough waxing. I recently decided that when I finally do come up with a manuscript, I want Jerry to turn it into a book. That "when" in fact, is now, while I'm here in Prague. I plan to write eight or nine profiles of a select set of people I've interviewed over the years. With this in mind I recently Zoomed Jerry, prior of course to having written a word. Our conversation focuses solely on how beautiful the end product might look if Jerry deigns to design it. We start with what he needs in order to get going: words and pictures, and specs. Then we look at the three publishing options that exist.

This Monday episode begins with tales from the red-eye road and the line at the bagel shop. Then it's on to the second women's major winner of the year, Minjee Lee, who ran away from a strong leaderboard in a record-setting U.S. Women's Open win. Her Sunday stroll to what she called the most important trophy she wanted combined with Billy Horschel's relatively dominant win in Columbus provokes a debate about whether it's reductive or insulting to call runaway victories boring as competitions. Jerry Kelly is hailed as the Alker Stopper. Then they pivot to Kevin Na resigning from the PGA Tour, whether Rickie's next, and some scuttlebutt about the OWGR system further marginalizing the Asian Tour as a response.

This week, Doug joins Brian to talk about three major golf developments going on in his hometown of Madison, WI.First, they discuss the new Pioneer Pointe project; a 13-hole par-3 course featuring template holes done by the same group behind Hawks Landing. Built through a housing development, what caught Brian and Doug off guard was the hefty $4200 a year dues to belong to the club. Given the length of the golf season of WI that seemed awfully steep for a par 3 course.Next, we delve into the latest TPC project, TPC Madison currently underway. Club owner, and Steve Stricker's father-in-law, Dennis Tiziani is overseeing the project to revamp the old Cherokee Country Club that was fading into marshland and bring it back to glory. Finally, Doug celebrates the Keiser family's involvement with redoing the 9-hole Glenway Golf Course. The reason for the intrigue with this course is that the plan is to close the course on Sundays to make it available for the public to walk, picnic, and be an accessible public park in a nod to golf courses like the Old Course in Scotland.
We have a super entertaining interview with our friend Wes Whitney, Wes is probably one of the greatest storytellers that I know and had us laughing the entire episode. We talked to Wes about growing up in a golf family, getting dunked on by Martellus Bennett in college (23:20), and a legendary Pro-Am story about Jerry Kelly and John Daly (49:00). We also asked him about a bunch of other fun stuff and did a draft of players you would want to grab a drink with. If you enjoy the episode please hit that 5 stars on Apple and subscribe on Spotify. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playitasitlies/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/playitasitlies/support
