In Part 2 of Episode 37, I am joined by former UCLA two-time All-American and Tour Pro Jay Delsing, as well as US Kids Golf Lifetime Master Teacher James Hong. Jay kicks things off with an entertaining story about previous guest Mark Calcavecchia. He then shares his experience playing in the 1985 Open Championship at St. Andrews, where he stayed until the dramatic conclusion when Constantino Rocca holed a miracle putt from the Valley of Sin to force a playoff with John Daly, which Daly ultimately won. Jay was also in the group behind Arnold Palmer, who was playing his final Open. He witnessed "The King" wave goodbye to the patrons from the Swilken Bridge and on the 18th green. Jay also shares his pick to win this year's Open and discusses the honor he received from the St. Louis Children's Miracle Network. Jay is wonderfully positive and a joy to talk to. Be sure to check out Jay's great show, Golf with Jay Delsing, anywhere you get your podcast content. James Hong comes highly recommended by Tom Patri and Jeff Smith. Jeff insisted, "You've got to have this guy on the show," while Tom described him as "absolutely one of the best Junior Instructors in our game." James certainly lived up to these accolades. We delve into his journey in golf, his early desire to play catcher in baseball, and how that influenced his teaching career. He explains how he sets proper expectations for his students and their parents, keeps young players engaged, and shares tips for improving our short game at home. Give James a follow on Instagram @jameshonggolf.
In Part 1 of Episode 37, I'm thrilled to be joined for the 100th time by Tom Patri, along with a special return visit from the 1989 Open Champion, Mark Calcavecchia. Tom Patri and I kick things off by reflecting on last week's Scottish Open and Robert MacIntyre's impressive victory. We also discuss the ISCO Championship and the close call for Pierceson Coody, a rising star Tom has been touting. Tom shares his experiences playing at Royal Troon and offers a valuable putting lesson on how to get the ball rolling end over end instead of skidding for the first few feet. Mark Calcavecchia returns to share memories from his triumph at the 1989 Open Championship, held at this year's venue, Royal Troon. He discusses the challenges of the 123-yard 8th hole, famously known as The Postage Stamp, and recounts his long par save on the 11th hole, the slam dunk chip shot he made on the 12th that shifted his mindset, and what it felt like standing over a 7-footer on the final playoff hole with three putts to win. Mark also shares his prediction for who will be holding the Claret Jug this Sunday afternoon.
In Part 2 of this week's show, we continue The Masters conversation with a guy who played in the tournament 18 times and was currently over in Augusta, Mark Calcavecchia. Following Mark, I'm joined by Rob Strano. Rob grew up playing at the same country club as 1968 Masters Champion Bob Goalby. Mark starts off explaining why he's nicknamed the bunker on 10 Brenda's Bunker, after his wife. We learn that the tradition of skipping shots across the pond on 16 during the practice rounds was started by Mark and his college teammate Ken Green. Mark and Ken used to bet about who could make all kinds of shots. When they got to 16 during a practice round in 1987, they threw a few balls down and tried to see who could get it closer. The next morning there was a letter waiting for Green in his locker from Augusta National Chairman Hord Harden saying "We don't do that at Augusta National." Of course, now it's a tradition during the practice rounds. If players don't skip one across the pond, the patrons boo them. Mark and I switch gears and talk about the Masters merchandise craze and one we don't understand around Masters nomes. We then get into some of his playing memories like the time he shot 29 on the back 9 in 1992. In 2001 he started the final round tied with Tiger and Phil. We hear about how he got ahead of himself and let that one get away. He and his wife Brenda are great people and great follows on social media. Be sure to follow them @MarkCalc and @BrendaCalc. Rob Strano grew up in St. Louis playing at the same country club as 1968 Masters Champion Bob Goalby. Mr. Goalby won that Masters in part thanks to Roberto DiVincenzo signing an incorrect scorecard. In the final round, Goalby birdied 13 and 14 and then eagled 15. DiVincenzo birdied 17 to take a one-stroke lead but his playing partner Tommy Aaron marked down a 4 instead of a 3. When their round was over, Goalby and DiVincenzo thought they were headed for an 18-hole playoff on Monday. But since DiVincenzo signed the card with the higher score, USGA rules state the higher score stands, so he lost by a stroke. Rob shares how Mr. Goalby dealt with how all that unfolded. I also get his insights on the topography of the course, how undulated those greens are, and who he likes to win this week.
Mark Calcavecchia joins us to discuss the 2024 golf season and more. Check it out!

It culminated award-winning shoes, now played on tour, that will help every golfer hit more accurate and powerful shots.Sqairz are worn by some of the most famous and successful instructors and PGA Tour winners in history including Sir Nick Faldo, Sepp Straka, John Daily, Mark Calcavecchia, Rick Smith, Jim McLean, Nick Bradley and more!Support the show
Mark Calcavecchia shares a couple of his Masters near misses in 1988 and 2001. We hear about the back 9 battle he had with Sandy Lyle in the final round in 1988. Mark was 5 strokes back after 7 holes but charged to take a 1 stroke lead with birdies on 8, 9, 11, and 13. In 2001, after a birdie on number 1 on Sunday he was tied with Tiger and Phil. Two great stories from one of the great players of that era.

After getting his first PGA victory in the U.S. at the 1986 Greater Greensboro Open, Sandy went on to win the Tournament Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass the following year. He prevailed at the 1988 Masters with an iconic 7-iron bunker shot setting up a closing birdie (ably described by runner-up Mark Calcavecchia in a cameo appearance) and opening the door for more Brits to win a green jacket at Augusta. Andy and Brendan close out the week with this Friday episode reacting to early action from across the “swamp swing,” where water is now in play on almost every hole across every tour. They marvel at the Solicitor General running out in front early at the PR Open, while also wondering if Bob Allenby’s island PTSD led to his DFL spot. There’s also a fun Smylie story about being put on the clock. Then they get back into The Concession crowbarring its name into the title of this WGC. Matthew Wolff’s WD is also addressed and lamented as a blow to the WGC spread watch. They laugh at the dramatic and constant framing about the challenge of these pros having to figure out a course they’ve never seen before this year. This week’s Precision Pro Flashback Friday is on a past winner at Doral, who clipped Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia, among others, before an outrageous run of health misfortunes.
Veteran PGA Tour caddie Eric Larson joins the podcast to discuss a life spent inside the ropes of the world’s biggest events and - for 11 years - a life confined to a prison cell. From winning PGA Tour events with Mark Calcavecchia and Harris English to meeting Wolf of Wall Street Jordan Belfort - Eric’s story is nothing short of remarkable. Hit the link in the bio to hear about Eric’s run-in with the law, some Ryder Cup tales and besides English, the player he’d most like to caddie for. It was an honour to have a chat with one of the most fascinating and respected loopers in the game.

“After 23 years on the bag, I still love caddying. Physically, I think I’m in good enough shape to do it for another 10 years, or maybe longer.” (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/John-Wood-at-Ryder-Cup.jpg) John Wood Veteran PGA Tour Caddie Sacramento, California John Wood has what many golf enthusiasts consider to be a dream job. As a professional caddie on the PGA Tour for the past 23 years, John Wood has carried for Hunter Mahan, Kevin Sutherland and Mark Calcavecchia. He is now in his 4th year on the bag for Matt Kuchar. In addition to scores of regular tour events and major tournaments behind the ropes, John has been part of 7 Ryder Cup teams, 6 Presidents Cup teams and the 2016 Olympics. (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Wood-with-Guitar.png) It’s safe to say that few people know more about the game, the players, the personalities, the courses, and what I takes to win on the Tour. John is recognized as one of the most respected and knowledgeable caddies on the PGA Tour. He’s going to share his story of how he got started, what life is really like for him as a caddie, as well as some guidance for people who aspire to follow a similar career path. John is somewhat of a Renaissance Man. He reads a lot, and in fact, once managed a Towers book store in Sacramento before he became a caddie. He also enjoys the outdoors and camping. But his real passion is music, and in fact, he recently wrote, produced and published his first album of original songs, which is entitled “Record66,” and available on Soundcloud. And he talks about all of that. Show Highlights: John’s unusual path to becoming a PGA Tour caddie What it takes to be considered a great professional caddie How most business relationships between caddies and Tour players are structured The “Do’s and Don’ts” of giving advice to your player during a round What happens when a caddie / player relationship ends How caddies help each other during a tournament Why John will never participate in the “caddie race” on the 16th hole of the Waste Management event How the rules have changed, making it more difficult to earn a caddie’s job on the PGA Tour Why he cried at the 2016 Summer Olympics What it’s like to carry for a popular player like Matt Kuchar Why the US team lost so badly at the 2018 Ryder Cup John’s songwriting career, and his future aspirations The individual who continues to serve as an inspiration to John (See “Tribute” link below) Notable Quotes: On his longevity as a Tour caddie: “It was something I thought I would try for a year or two and then get back to the real world. I had no idea it would turn into a career.” On what it takes to make a great caddie: “A Tour caddie needs to have the answers to at least 5 questions that may never get asked by his player.” On life of the PGA Tour: “If you have a good player who treats you well, there is really nothing to complain about.” On his songwriting technique: “I start by writing the lyrics before I write the music, which is unlike the way most people do it.” On becoming a Tour caddie today: “Be prepared to pay some dues. It’s much more difficult today. Most players bring out their own caddies these days.” On working with Matt Kuchar: “He’s kind of like Fred Couples back in the day, because he’s so relaxed and easy to get along with.” On managing a player in high pressure situations: “The waits on the tees and walks between shots can be more important than the actual shots, because you need to relax your player, and keep his mind off of golf.” Resources: Golf Yeah Website (http://www.golfyeah.com) John Wood’s Original Music on Soundcloud: Record66...

I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. Thanks for listening to the Emily T Gail Talk Story Show emilytgailtalkstory.podomatic.com.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.
13-time PGA Tour winner Mark Calcavecchia talks with Alan Bastable about John Daly joining the Champions Tour, Tiger Woods' career and shares some great stories about each of them. You're going to want to hear both of them, as well as a great story about him gambling on golf.
