Welcome to Emily T Gail Talk Story ...August 2022. Sharing some thought about my enthusiasm for the PGA TOUR Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit at Detroit Golf Club last week with one of my favoirtie players Tony Finau winning. Tony used to be at Turtle Bay here in Hawaii. In this first show that I have recorded in a while I share some of my own stories. Correction due regarding my Sam Saunders story. Sam is Arnold Palmer's grandson. I said son. One of the stories I told was about seeing Sam when he played in the Rocket Mortgage Classic year one (2019). I first met Sam when he was about 6 years old and Arnold used to fly his own Cesna Citation if I remember correctly here for the Mauna Lani Senior Skins on ABC that ran before the Super Bowl. Used to meet Arnold and his guests and family when they would arrive at the airport.- Arnold in the pilots seat. Arnold's son in law Roy would caddy for Arnold. Sam is son of Roy and Arnold's daughter Amy. . About the time I met Arnold I met Mark Rolfing, who at the time was with ABC. Now with NBC/Golf Channel. That was well over 25 years ago and Mark and his wife Debi have been friends ever since and over the years been very good to me. Mark always has time to talk story with me. Mark was at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with Golf Channel last two years and has been great about letting me lead some of my fellow Detroit media friends to him. We both enjoy weaving Detroit love and Hawaii aloha. At the end of this show is a talk story Mark and I did in January at the Senior PGA TOUR Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Mark and I talk about his long time efforts to grow junior golf here in Hawaii with the recent merging of the First Tee Hawaii and HSJGA. I was a junior golfer in the 1960's and that is why I have been able to shape a way to stay around the game in my own way. I love how Mark acknowledges my doing it my way. I learned it from him. He has been a pioneer in many ways. Thanks for listening. Aloha.

I was so pleased to have a conversation with Mark Rolfing, NBC/Golf Channel Analyst few days before he heads to Whistling Straits in Wisconsin site of this 43rd Ryder Cup. While the 43rd Ryder Cup in matches take place Sept. 24-26, beginning Monday Sept. 20 4pm EST Mark will begin his Mark Rolfing Live from the Ryder Cup. which is his favorite tournament to cover. this Monday at 4pm EST. He covered his first Ryder Cup in 1991 for ABC. It is his favorite tournament to cover and he has some interesting takes on this years event. Mark has seen a lot, has accomplished a lot outside of his broadcasting life which began as a result of playing in a professional golf tournament he had created at Kapalua on Maui. After Don Ohlmeyer who was producer with ABC/ESPN saw him in the interview booth encouraged him to get into the business and offered him a job. That tournament site at Kapalua where he had created the professional tournament has evolved. We now know it as Tournament of Champions played on the renowned Plantation Course that Mark was involved developing. USA Today labeled Mark “TV sport's best on course golf reporter”. Long time sports reporter Ann Miller calls Mark's rise to the top of network golf television a unique and intriguing story and that is what I asked Mark to talk about in this interview. Mark and his wife have made a difference in others lives with their Mark and Debi Rolfing Production Company and the Mark and Debi Charitable Foundation and their dear to their heart “Angel Babies” foster program. Mark is the reason there is a Maui Basketball Classic and it is televised every year. I could go on and on and we sort of do that in this fun conversation as they always are. I've been interviewing Mark for over 20 years …. Grateful that he always makes time for me. Been one of my biggest supporters in my years of covering golf.

Welcome back to a special production of The Fire Pit. A mini mid-week episode, put together after my recent interview with Kevin Kisner, who’s coming off a third-place finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. Bryson DeChambeau (-23) won the tournament, Matthew Wolff (-20) finished second and Kisner (-18) made a run on Sunday. But to say Bryson “won” is to say he overpowered the course and the competition. I had Kisner on to talk about his match with Riggs and the boys of the Fore Play Podcast at Pinehurst. For more on that story, Part 2 of Riggs’ 99 Days at Pinehurst will drop on Sunday. But before we got to talking about trying to beat a four-man scramble squad for charity, Kisner and I had a short back-and-forth about trying to beat a guy who was outdriving him by 60 yards. I took the DeChambeau chunk of our conversation and played it for Brandel Chamblee, analyst for NBC/Golf Channel. Here are snippets of my conversation with Kisner with Chamblee’s commentary throughout… Check out the The Fire Pit shop for our new hats! More items in the works! Always fun to talk story with Mark Rolfing, NBC Golf Channel d during the MItsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. We covered a lot of subjects. JR De Groote, Sports Editor West Hawaii Today was with us. I turned on my recorder as we were heading over to the Golf Channel Broadcast Booth where we were going to park and talk story in event Mark had to get on air. Mark was sharing a story about Tiger Woods and Peter Jacobson and Fluff Cowan who had been Peter's Caddie and ended up with Tiger. I met Fluff through Peter and followed all that so thought it was a story told by mark I wanted to share. After we settled in while we were talking I shifted into video ... so our sound shifts at that point. I put the two together so I could share our whole talk story.

I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. Thanks for listening to the Emily T Gail Talk Story Show emilytgailtalkstory.podomatic.com.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.
John Swantek visits with NBC/Golf Channel commentator Steve Sands to assess the competitive return of Tiger Woods and the impact of his presence going forward.
