Was Kit Conner obligated to reveal his queer sexual orientation to play his role as a queer character on ‘Heartstopper'? Timmerman and Blankschaen argue that straight actors can authentically portray queer characters, addressing issues of character versus performer authenticity, potential harm to marginalized actors, and the broader impact on the industry. They respond to various objections and explore the philosophical and ethical nuances surrounding representation in media.Link to Blankschaen and Timmerman's paper: https://philpapers.org/rec/BLAAOS-2[00:00] Introduction and Episode Overview[00:19] Thought Experiment: Kit Conner's Role in Heartstopper[02:54] Character vs. Performer Authenticity[10:28] Consequentialist Views on Performer Authenticity[25:37] Public vs. Private Lives of Actors[33:29] Alternative Rules for Casting Queer Roles[37:03] Inclusivity vs. Exclusivity in Casting[47:01] Optimism in Media Evolution[49:30] Strongest Objections to the View[52:03] Extending the Argument to Other Groups[01:01:10] Final Thoughts and ConclusionCheck out FeedSpot's list of 90 best philosophy podcasts, where Brain in a Vat is ranked at 15, here: https://podcast.feedspot.com/philosophy_podcasts/

In this episode, we're diving into handwriting. Even for those who do not have difficulty, handwriting in the early years is essential. When students have not yet reached automaticity or legibility in letter formation, it taxes their working memory and places a higher demand on cognitive resources. We want to look at how we can free up some of those cognitive demands. Effective handwriting practice will lead to stronger spelling, reading, and writing performance. Tune in as we discuss the role handwriting should have in our classrooms as well as the importance and some of the benefits of cursive handwriting! We'll also look at the developmental stages, offer some teaching tips, and share the most beneficial handwriting resources we've used over the years! RA's Cafecito Confession: "This means so much to me… When I started producing Cafecito as a weekly podcast, I was experiencing one of greatest lows of my life. Everything closed in on me at the same time. I lost my job, no unemployment, I had to give up my apartment and I had to give up living with my dogs. And found myself technically homeless. A friend took me in and let me stay for a while.  I have never felt so low, worthless, scared, and alone. But through hitting rock bottom everything became clear… I have always loved the medium of radio and using the microphone for expression. From my friends room, I started my weekly podcast. And the first topic was about gratitude. Back to the BIG NEWS… I have been wanting to attend The Podcast Movement for years. And been dreaming for 2 years about being a Speaker. I almost played small again this year." RA Ruthie and Alex will be making a Presentation at the Podcast Movement called, “Doing it live and Making it Wepa” – referring to producing a live podcast for 7 years and making the best you can out of the circumstances along the way.  CAFECITO SPOTLIGHT - Celebrating the talent within our communities Priscella Shum - Global Design Manager at Reebok / Adidas Group RUTHIE STARTS WITH TRENDING NOW/HOT TOPICS It is up to us to Stay Informed & Keep Growing. “Listen to that voice inside you. Follow that calling, especially if it doesn’t make sense. Pay attention to that voice, and find a way to honor it.” - Dan Keen   This week on The Song Revolution Podcast, Dan Keen talks about the journey to pursuing your passion, and the milestones achieved along the way. Dan is a Belmont University educator in Nashville, Tennessee. Belmont is one of the most popular music business schools in the country. Dan served as an adjunct professor for 16 years, before being hired full-time. Music has been Dan’s focus for the majority of his life, and his experience in the music industry is broad and diverse. He held a 15-year tenure as an executive with ASCAP and worked with incredible artists including Paramore, Chris Young, Rivers Rutherford, Nickel Creek, Mercy Me, and Rachel Thibodeau. He has also served with the Bluegrass Association and has experience writing jingles for major brands. He is hilarious and authentic and has incredible insight to offer to songwriters and musicians.     “There is no failure, as long as you learn something.” - Dan Keen   In this episode, Dan shares his journey through different realms of music and incredible opportunities with the music industry that finally led to his job at Belmont. He shares that when he was hired at Belmont, he realized that it was the passion and purpose he had been pursuing all along.  Many times your calling in life doesn’t make sense until later, and we might not even realize what it is until we’re right in the midst of it. There’s a continual process of following the path before us, even if we can only see the next step.   Keen shares so much great advice for aspiring songwriters, musicians, and really anyone who is hoping to break into the music industry. He shares the best way to find success is to ask yourself two questions. What are the needs of the creative people and how can you bridge that gap? Instead of boxing yourself in with a particular role in the industry, look to solve a problem, meet a need, and find out how that will impact the world around you.   The other advice Keen shares is, “if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” Identify the people you are trying to reach with your music, and then find out where they hang out. Give those people what they need, and meet them in their environment.   “The inspiration comes from God, but there’s also work involved. You have to learn the craft. It’s like any other artform. Learn how to craft your music so people can receive your message.” - Dan Keen Some topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction // Dan Keen - 1:38 Dan’s Story - 6:27 Dan’s Current Work at Belmont University - 27:54 For the Love of Bluegrass - 31:26 Work with Nickel Creek, Ricky Skaggs, and Other Groups - 37:12 The Evolution of the Music Industry - 43:25 Focus for Songwriters - 51:23 Information About Belmont - 57:39 Wrap Up - 1:03:12 How to get involved Join the Successful Christian Songwriters Group on Facebook and continue the discussion! https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuccessfulChristianSongwriters/ Check out all of the resources for you to become the songwriter you were meant to be at www.nashvillechristiansongwriters.com   If you liked this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave a quick review on iTunes.
