March 5th: Kiki Camarena's Body Found (1985) It's a wonderful thing to leave a mark on this planet that will last long after you are gone. One hopes, however, that it doesn't take losing your life to do so.  On March 5th 1985 a man's body was found after having suffered tremendously at the hands of a group of men who wanted him dead. A man who, in death, left a lasting impression that can be felt, and recognized, all throughout the nation each and every year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiki_Camarena, https://www.dea.gov/red-ribbon/kiki-red-ribbon-history, https://www.justthinktwice.gov/article/special-agent-enrique-kiki-camarena, https://www.marca.com/en/lifestyle/us-news/2022/07/16/62d1fe40ca474164048b45b2.html, https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/cartel-kingpin-convicted-in-1985-murder-of-dea-agent-kiki-camarena-captured-in-mexico/2995603/, https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/crime/cartel-netflix-camarena-caro-quintero-b2124818.html, https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/politics/2020/02/27/enrique-camarena-dea-agent-murder-narcos-mexico/2566023001/, https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/enrique-camarena-case-forensic-nightmare Learn more about your ad choices. On today's how we discuss three examples of media coverage of crime and violence in Chicago that perfectly demonstrate just how bad the coverage of these issues is in Chicago. There is little doubt that the tried and true methods of covering crime and violence in Chicago on a daily basis serves nobody's interest but the outlets and journalists' themselves. The internet has served not as an empowering tool for the media to crime and violence in a more nuanced and thoughtful way without the space and time restrictions that printing deadline or nightly newscasts put on local journalists. Instead it has mostly served to increase space available for the same horrible reporting. The secondary problem the internet has allowed for is the ever increasing pressure from political operations that disguise themselves as media outlets and push "reporting" that serves a fringe political ideology. Unfortunately for Chicago, there too many fringe political operations that put pressure on local media to report the news inline with their political ideology. All of this leads us to the three media stories we we discuss on today's show: Arrest rates have dropped over past few years in Chicago as crime rates go up -- why? Trump's Operation Legend's legacy: 2 years later, Chicago gun defendants getting stiff sentences 68 bullets fired in Near North shootout, but man accused of taking part only faces misdemeanor after prosecutors reject felony charges All three are horrific in their own way. Sometimes it is heard to figure out if a report on crime and violence in Chicago in Chicago is from a mainstream outlet or one of the fringe political operations if you read them without knowing what outlet it was coming from. Crime and violence reporting has always been an issues in Chicago unfortunately the internet has not brought about a boom in meaningful and thoughtful coverage of these issues.

"People don't care what you know until they know that you care."  "When you have a people's first servant leader persona people will go out of their way to reach for the Gold. Relationships are key to any successful reform effort.” Chief Ralph L. Godbee, Jr., is a community advocate; a preacher; a servant leader and yes a "cop".  Chief Godbee always prefaces his service in law enforcement by saying, "I am a black man that happens to be a cop, not a cop that happens to be a black man":  Acutely aware of his ability to maneuver in both arenas without compromising his commitment to offering solutions to issues that cause inequitable outcomes in America for black people; he speaks boldly in a way that is undeniably one of seeking justice for black and brown citizens and particularly when it comes to policing in America and its reform efforts. This week on New Mexico in Focus… Correspondent Megan Kamerick interviews end-of-life planner Gail Rubin, who is the coordinator of the upcoming Before I Die Festival. As the world battles a pandemic, it is especially apt to talk about facing death and dying, a topic many people would rather avoid. NMiF producer Matt Grubs talks with New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver about how voters should handle absentee ballots in the closing weeks of the election, as well as how county clerks will have a head start – if they take advantage of it – in counting absentee ballots, thanks to a state law that lets those ballots be tabulated much the same as early in-person votes are in the days leading up to Nov. 3. NMiF began the week by hosting a debate between the three candidates hoping to fill the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Tom Udall at the end of this year. Vying for the position are current U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján (Democrat), former TV meteorologist Mark Ronchetti (Republican) and retired nuclear scientist Bob Walsh (Libertarian). This week’s NMiF contains an excerpt of that conversation. The full hour-long debate, which aired on NMPBS last week Sunday, can be seen in its entirety at the VOTE 2020 page on newmexicopbs.org. Gene Grant and The Line opinion panelists look how Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham continues to try to bring down record-breaking coronavirus case numbers by restricting – but not shutting down – businesses throughout the state. New rules that go into effect Oct. 23 include a 10:00 p.m. closing time for retail shops, and mandatory certification for restaurants to stay in business. The Line also looks at more fallout over last week’s destruction of a monument on the Santa Fe Plaza. The toppling of the controversial obelisk left the city divided; many had been calling for its removal, while others wanted it left alone. The Line ends with a debate over Attorney General William Barr’s praise of Operation Legend in Albuquerque during a visit last week.

The podcast, according to The Heritage Foundation's Mary Clare Amselem, cites “examples of parents getting involved in the day-to-day operation of the school, and paints this involvement as an affront to public schooling," implying parental involvement is somehow detrimental. Amselem joins the podcast to discuss it.We also cover these stories: About 2,000 American troops are coming home from Iraq this month. Attorney General Bill Barr said Wednesday during a press conference that a federal program called Operation Legend is cracking down on Chicago’s surging crime, making more than 500 arrests and charging 124 people with federal criminal counts since the beginning of the program. The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it will represent President Donald Trump in a defamation case filed by E. Jean Carroll, a woman who claims to have been raped by Trump in the 1990s. The GOP Establishment had a rough go of it in my beloved Sunshine State last night. Voters reward fighters even if Washington, D.C., doesn’t always. I break down the results in today's episode.

It seems that crazy can always go up another notch. A fragmented shell will come from the Dim convention. Bernie is AOC's man. The level of hypocrisy is neck deep. The virtual prison lineup was once a viable party. The least aware are always the most arrogant. Operation Legend is making a big impact. The Mid East is still important. Stay informed and awake. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump announced the expansion of Operation Legend, a federal law enforcement effort to crack down on violent crime in America's major cities.  Shortly after his press event, Fox News Rundown host Jessica Rosenthal spoke with Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton about the program and how the federal government can address crime spikes and unrest in numerous cities across the country. In the segment that aired earlier this week, US Senator Cotton discussed the virus, mask-wearing and his controversial op-ed in "The New York Times" that led to the resignation of the newspaper's opinion editor.  The original conversation was too long and we could not include everything the Senator had to say including his thoughts on our escalating tensions with China.  On The Fox News Rundown Extra, you will hear the entire conversation with Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton. What's going on in America's cities? The Trump administration says that gangs and violent anarchists are out of control, and that governors and mayors aren't doing enough to stop them. Accordingly, they're sending in the feds, and we are witnessing Robert Higgs's “Ratchet Effect” in real time. Federal Government is using the latest crisis to justify new incursions on our liberties.Patrick Eddington, a research fellow in homeland security and civil liberties at the Cato Institute, says that the recent DHS action in Portland is an experiment on unwitting human test subjects. The preliminary results seem to have emboldened the administrative state to push forward with “Operation Legend” – an aggressive federal law enforcement action in cities across the country. President Trump says that an alphabet soup of agencies - led by the DOJ - has “no choice but to get involved.”“The FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals Service and Homeland Security will together be sending hundreds of skilled law enforcement officers to Chicago to help drive down violent crime,” said Trump on Wednesday, before Attorney General William Barr took to the podium to justify his deployment of anti-gang task forces engaged in everything from a ramped-up War on Drugs to counter-protests against Black Lives Matter and related groups. Eddington positions this rhetoric squarely within the “American authoritarian tradition” – running through the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, Lincoln's suspension of Habeas Corpus during the Civil War, Wilson's Espionage Act, FDR's Japanese internment, the HUAC… the list goes on.Most disturbingly, we have seen the past two administrations suspend the Posse Comitatus Act - the 1878 Law preventing government from using soldiers to enforce ordinary law - in progressive increments. First, President Bush's 2002 Homeland Security Act allowed the DHS to deploy federal agents to protect federal buildings. Next, Obama's 2012 authorization of the National Defense Authorization Act redefined U.S. territory as a battlefield and legalized indefinite detainment of American citizens without access to a trial or attorney. We now have DHS officials in military uniform taking American citizens into unmarked vans by without clear probable cause.Leftist mayors and governors who now complain about the use of unconstitutional force against protestors in Portland were silent during the Obama years. Are the chickens coming home to roost? Regardless, libertarians must be vigilant in standing against unconstitutional violations of due process and the separation of powers.
