This week, 133 cardinals from around the world will gather at the Sistine Chapel to vote for the next pope. This event, known as the Conclave (a term popularized by the Oscar-winning movie of the same name), is steeped in tradition and secrecy. Only the voting cardinals know what takes place inside the chapel. Mary FioRito, a senior fellow at the Catholic Association, explains the process of selecting a new pope and what the Catholic Church seeks in this selection. President Trump has yet to close trade deals with other countries, but the administration reports that negotiations are underway. Additionally, after pulling federal funding from Harvard last month, the Trump administration has also halted any new federal grants to the university until White House demands are met. White House Senior Policy Strategist May Mailman joins the podcast to discuss the Trump administration's stance on federal funding for universities and what upcoming administration travels abroad could mean for trade talks. What would it look like for the Ten Commandments to make a comeback in public schools? In this episode of The Narrative, Andrea Piccotti-Bayer joins CCV President Aaron Baer, Policy Director David Mahan, and Communications Director Mike Andrews to discuss the constitutionality of displaying the Ten Commandments and why public schools should return to the religious roots that our country was founded on. Before talking with Andrea, Aaron and Mike celebrate the recent Senate Bill 1 victory banning DEI at Ohio's state colleges and universities. They also discuss the proposed House budget and Senate Bill 156, which would require schools to teach the Success Sequence. JONAH THE DOG IN THE BOAT by BRIDIE STRINGERBroadcast: Tuesday 7th May 2024, 3:30pm About the Writer: Following careers in telecommunications and NHS management, I undertook academic postgraduate studies in pastoral theology and was awarded a doctorate in 2010. I then became a university lecturer in reflective practice courses for those working in chaplaincies, and also for candidates in formation programmes for the ordained ministry of permanent deacon. I have actively participated in parish, deanery and diocesan pastoral councils over many years and been a catechist for children, young people and adults. I find creative writing helpful in pastoral ministry as it frees people to engage imaginatively with faith rather than burdening them with doctrine and orthodoxy which they might find difficult to engage with. Finally, I am a wife, mother of two loving daughters and grandmother of two amazing grandsons. In short, I am a good example of St John Henry Newman's saying: ‘To live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.' Perfection still eludes me! As well as monologues and other short pieces he has also written and professionally produced longer shows. Notable pass productions include 'Parables' – all the teaching stories of Jesus in a single show – and 'The Boy From the Boro' – the story of a Nuneaton shopkeeper and his involvement in the First World War. The current show is 'John's Tale', telling the story of St. John's Gospel through the eyes of those who met Jesus in a light-hearted, accessible style. Nevertheless, it still retains the essential message of love and redemption. This is planned to be touring again later in the year. “Effective preaching is like good butter sinking into warm toast,” says Karla Bellinger. “You've gotta give the Holy Spirit a little bit of time to do some work.” As the founding executive director of the Institute for Homiletics at the University of Dallas and president of the Catholic Association of Teachers of Homiletics, Karla is filled with bits of wisdom like this for homilists. “The God of the universe who is infinite also wants to be the God who is intimate and close,” Karla says in her homily for the Second Sunday of Lent. “God wants to dazzle us.” In many ways, this is the mission of the homilist: helping people in the pews draw closer to God and prompting a dazzling encounter. Karla would know; as a lay woman and homiletician, she coaches and trains preachers—mostly ordained Catholic men—to give effective homilies. Preaching is a “pastoral act,” she says. Through every homily, “you want your people to come closer to God.” Listen to Karla's homily on this week's episode of “Preach.” After delivering her homily, Karla explores with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., some of the quick- and long-term fixes preachers can make to improve their homilies such that people in the pews can really hear what the preacher—and God—has to say. Read the full text of this week's homily and Scripture readings. Do you have a preacher to recommend for “Preach,” Let us know here. When Jude Siciliano, OP, sits down to write his homily, he always has a Venn diagram in mind. “It is one of the theories of preaching that there should be three stories,” Jude says, “The story of God, the story of the preacher, and the story of the listeners, the congregation.” And it is in the overlap of these three stories that Jude preaches. Jude Siciliano, OP, is a member of the Southern Dominican Province, USA. For fourteen years he taught Homiletics at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California and is past president of the Catholic Association of Teachers of Homiletics. Jude has has given retreats and preaching workshops to ordained and lay preachers alongside Sr. Catherine Hilkert, OP, and Sr. Patricia Bruno, OP. You can read Jude's weekly email reflections on the Sunday scriptures called "First Impressions" by visiting PreacherExchange.com. Listen to Jude's homily for the Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time on this week's episode of “Preach.” After the homily, he shares with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J.—a Jesuit priest from South Africa, associate editor at America and associate pastor at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Manhattan—his top tips for preaching and what women preachers have taught him about the craft. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Frank Pavone, the national director of Priests for Life, has been dismissed from the priesthood by the Vatican. In a statement addressed to Church leaders and posted on his organization's website Saturday, Pavone vowed to continue his ministry despite his dismissal from the clerical state. Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, wrote in a letter on December 13 that Pavone had been dismissed from the clerical state for “blasphemous communications on social media” and “persistent disobedience of the lawful instructions of his diocesan bishop.” Pavone contends that he was not properly informed of the Vatican's decision, and has vowed to take legal action and make a direct appeal to his supporters. An outspoken supporter of former president Donald Trump, Pavone served on official Trump campaign outreach positions in 2016 and was originally a co-chair of Trump's 2020 pro-life coalition as well as an advisory board member of Catholics for Trump. Canon law forbids clerics from having an active role in political parties unless they receive the permission of their bishop. Pavone hosted the show “Defending Life” on EWTN for many years until the bishop of Amarillo, Texas, revoked Pavone's permission to appear on the network https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253110/frank-pavone-cancels-mass-after-vatican-dismisses-him-from-priesthood Pope Francis celebrated his 86th birthday on Saturday with the Missionaries of Charity, honoring three people who care for “the poorest of the poor” with the Mother Teresa Award. On December 17, the pope presented Gian Piero, Father Hanna Jallouf, and Silvano Pedrollo with the award and a message of gratitude. On his birthday, Pope Francis prayed for the intercession of St. Teresa of Calcutta, whom he canonized as a saint in 2016. “May Mother Teresa help us from heaven to live poverty with simplicity and prayer, so that we can help others,” he said. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253103/pope-francis-honors-people-who-care-for-poorest-of-the-poor-on-his-86th-birthday The diocesan phase of the beatification processes of 140 priests and laymen murdered in Spain during the religious persecution of the 1930s was concluded today. Among the candidates is the priest who hid the body of Saint Isidore so that it would not be desecrated. There are three causes for beatification: one covering 61 diocesan priests from Madrid, another for 71 laypeople, and a third for eight members of the Catholic Association of Propagandists, all of whom were murdered during the religious genocide unleashed during the Second Spanish Republic and civil war. The religious persecution of those years “was the bloodiest suffered by the Church in our country, although not the greatest in history; yes, perhaps the most intense,” according to an auxiliary bishop of Madrid, Juan Antonio Martínez Camino. These causes are promoted by the Archdiocese of Madrid, the Diocese of Getafe, the Catholic Association of Propagandists, Catholic Action of Madrid, and Catholic Action of Getafe. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253100/another-140-spanish-laymen-priests-martyred-for-their-faith-considered-for-beatification Today, the Church celebrates Blessed Pope Urban V. he is perhaps best known for his decision to return the papacy to Rome and end the Avignon exile of the popes. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/blessed-pope-urban-v-89

On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: As the Biden Administration doubles down on protecting abortion access in wake of the Supreme Court's dismantling of Roe V. Wade, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops stated in a letter, “We implore those who see abortion as a legitimate ‘solution' to the needs of women to abandon this path of death and despair.” The US House passed the Women's Health Protection Act, as well as a bill to protect women who cross state lines for abortions. Founder and President of the Internet Accountability Project, Mike Davis, joins to share his thoughts on this. Passing the Pill: Who's Responsible for Abortifacient Mishaps? Conversations with Consequences Originally published Feb. 26, 2022 by The Catholic Association. You've heard of passing the buck. But Planned Parenthood has given us a new expression: passing the pill. In this episode of the Ruth Institute Podcast, Dr. Grazie Christie interviews Dr. Donna Harrison, on her show “Conversations with Consequences.” Dr. Harrison, president of the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG), and a friend of the Ruth Institute, spoke at Ruth Institute's 2021 Summit for Survivors. They discuss chemical abortions, but specifically the drug Mifeprex. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) originally put regulations on this drug, but caving to political pressures, they recently backtracked. But was this a wise decision? Dr. Harrison exposes the history of how this drug came to market when the Clinton administration contacted the manufacturer of Mifeprex in France and asked them to bring this drug to America. The original France-based manufacturer declined out of legal fears and instead authorized Planned Parenthood Federation of America to manufacture it instead. Planned Parenthood was also afraid of legal suits, so they created a shell company, Danco, which was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in 1995 so that it might evade legal suits. Danco however does not manufacture anything, so they partnered with Hua Lian Pharmaceuticals in China who at that time was already under sanction by the FDA for faulty drug manufacturing practices. So, if you were able to emerge from the other side of that rabbit hole, the gist is this: no one wants to claim legal responsibility for this abortion drug. It seems they would rather “pass the pill.” You may be asking yourself “why?” Well, have you heard of the serious trauma and catastrophic consequences that result from taking this drug? Dr. Harrison goes into it all in surprising detail. She also reveals that the FDA was caught hiding the number of adverse events, including deaths, as a result of taking this pill. And so much more! Please continue listening to hear the shocking truth.

Carlos is a journalist, editor and multimedia storyteller with experience in video, audio and photography. Quotes from the show: "The present moment is always full of infinite treasure. It contains far more than you can possibly grasp. Faith is the measure of its riches: what you find in the present moment is according to the measure of your faith. Love also is the measure: the more the heart loves, the more it rejoices in what God provides. The will of God presents itself at each moment like an immense ocean that the desire of your heart cannot empty; yet you will drink from that ocean according to your faith and love." Father Jean-Pierre de Caussade “Suffering that is not transformed is transmitted.” Sister Miriam James Heidland "God cannot give Himself to us unless our hands are empty to receive Him. The deepest reason why so few of us are saints is because we will not let God love us. To be loved means a naked, defenseless surrender to all God is. It means a glad acceptance of our nothingness, a look fixed only on the God who gives, taking no account of the nothing to whom the gift is made.” Sister Ruth Burrows, a Carmelite in the monastery at Quidenham in Norfolk, England Carlos' Ministries: Catholic Influencers: https://catholicinfluencers.wordpress.com/ (https://catholicinfluencers.wordpress.com/) Email: catholicinfluencer@gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/catholicinfluencing/ (https://www.instagram.com/catholicinfluencing/) Sacrament of the Present Moment: https://medium.com/presentivity (https://medium.com/presentivity) Guardians of Beauty podcast: https://gobeautypodcast.wordpress.com/ (https://gobeautypodcast.wordpress.com/) Living the CALL is brought to you by the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders.
