The first international women's sports event, The Women's Olympiad, kicked off in Monte Carlo on 24th March, 1921. A hundred athletes from five nations competed in track and field events, defying the male-dominated Olympic movement that excluded women from all sports except tennis, golf, sailing and croquet. Created by campaigner Alice Milliat, the event showcased the skills of pioneering athletes Mary Lines, Violette Morris and Lucie Bréard - but was primarily intended to put pressure on the ‘proper' Olympics to finally admit women into all sports - something not fully achieved for another forty years. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how rumours of ‘fainting' women put the feminists' cause back by decades; consider whether the IOC's concerns regarding ‘ladylike' pursuits were straightforward sexism; and reveal how a Paris2024 tribute to Milliat's victory was usurped by corporate sponsorship… Further Reading: ‘Throwback Thursday: How a French Feminist Staged Her Own Games and Forced the Olympics to Include Women' (Vice, 2016): https://www.vice.com/en/article/xybw9k/throwback-thursday-how-a-french-feminist-staged-her-own-games-and-forced-the-olympics-to-include-women ‘Women and the Olympic Dream - The Continuing Struggle for Equality, 1896-2021 - By Maria Kaj' (McFarland, 2022): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Women_and_the_Olympic_Dream/MBx9EAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=alice+milliat&pg=PA39&printsec=frontcover ‘Women's Olympic Games at Monte Carlo' (Topical Budget, 1923): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq1BV2pcXd0 #Sport #Sexism #France We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

The year is 1958, and America is still innocent in terms of evil people. We know they were always around, but with snail mail and no internet, things that made the news are not like they are today. Someone commits a heinous crime in Manchester, England, and in mere seconds, we here in the US hear about it. Today's case, Day 11, takes us back to when Eisenhouse and Nixon led the US and the FBI, led by J. Edgar Hoover, was America's watchdog. Even though it entered the lexicon in early 1900, the word teenager was coming into the common language. Teens were becoming more independent from their parents thanks to public education. No longer were young children pulled from school to go to work. This led to some rebellion from those teens, who were better to show the cause than James Dean and Elvis. Perhaps it was perfect timing in the US, or maybe it was the shock of how two teenagers could capture the world's attention and go down in infamy. The couple would be memorialized in such movie classics as Terrance Malik's 1974 Badlands with Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek as the leads, Tarrantino's True Romance, David Lynch's Wild at Hart, Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers. Even today, the couple still holds our gaze with movies, tv shows, songs, books, and more. Football writer, radio host and podcaster Jason La Canfora has had eclectic taste in music going back to his teen years, so it's only appropriate that he chose a band with a range of eclectic sounds to discuss on this episode of You, Me and An Album. Jason introduced me to Fishbone's Truth and Soul, which features ska, soul, funk, metal and punk across its dozen tracks. In addition to this 1988 album, we talked about Jason's work with CBSSports.com, the musical influences he encountered at Baltimore's skate parks, the D.C. punk scene and too many other topics to mention. You can find Jason on Twitter at @JasonLaCanfora (though, as we discussed on the show, I will pass along any messages that you send me regarding this episode).Jason's archive of columns for CBSSports.com are here: https://www.cbssports.com/writers/jason-la-canfora/.Check out Jason's podcast about bad baseball teams! For decades, curry, has been synonymous with Asian cuisine. The smell of curry is so potent, that it has been used in the past by drug smugglers to disguise their goods. According to the book Murder Most Foul, as recent as September 2012, a smuggler in Birmingham, UK, was caught after attempting to import 68kgs of heroin, worth more than $30 million, by hiding it in a container filled with 600 boxes of curry spices. And a couple years before that, curry was also used to hide something far more sinister... a dismembered body.References:https://medium.com/@xreasons/7-reasons-why-singapores-crime-rate-is-so-low-d695a030426chttps://twitter.com/unsolvedsg/status/1289911300076650496https://books.google.co.in/books?id=VSeJAAAAQBAJ&pg=PA39&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=falsehttps://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/from-the-straits-times-archives-in-the-1984-curry-murder-six-were-chargedhttps://books.google.co.in/books?id=VSeJAAAAQBAJ&pg=PA39&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=falsehttps://www.sammyboy.com/threads/a-recap-of-the-shocking-murder-case-in-s%E2%80%99pore-whereby-the-body-was-cooked-with-curry.223188/https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/infopedia/articles/SIP_596__2008-12-12.html#:~:text=Investigation%20of%20the%20murder,Board%20holiday%20chalets%20in%20Changi.https://goodyfeed.com/a-recap-of-the-shocking-murder-case-in-spore-whereby-the-body-was-cooked-with-curry/
Le bombe degli alleati non risparmiano niente e nessuno, men che meno le opere d'arte. Molti si applicano nel salvataggio delle opere, ma la storia finirà per ricordare quasi solo i Monument Men guidati dagli americani. MERCH STORE: RedHandedShop.comIn 1988 sisters Ericka and Julie Ingram were at Bible Camp when they were hit with a sudden memory. It was a memory of being sexually abused by their father, Paul Ingram - the Deputy Sheriff of Thurston County in Washington. As time passed their stories became more and more terrifying; they were remembering robed men attacking them, sacrificing babies and drinking blood. Were these memories real? What had really happened? If we were starting from scratch, as our guest Aziz Huq puts it, how should our constitution deal with criminality by high government officials? We talk about the constitutional designer's perspective, the criminalization of politics, and the politicization of the rule of law. In this episode Jake discusses the emotion of Interest where the emotion of interest is as essential to intellectual development as exercise is to physical development. The emotion of interest is continually present in the normal mind under normal conditions, and it is the central motivation for engagement in creative and constructive endeavors and for the sense of well-being. Interest and its interaction with other emotions account for selective attention, which in turn influences all other mental processes. Embeddedness affects may occur in depressed adults who loses interest in the surrounding world. Activity affects are characterized by zestfulness, interested feeling tones, and positive tension, these activity affects appear in the attentive looking of an infant and in the creative activities of adults. Interest, is an attitude rather than an effect. For more information on Carroll E. Today I talk with Luminary Labs CEO and founder Sara Holubek. Luminary Labs is a really unique company that both consults with companies on strategy and also helps run massive open innovation programs for organizations. We talk about working on problems that matter, on how humans have always been more nuanced than marketers and how companies need to be creating Intelligence Engines. One of the things that Sara helped me think about is an idea i've been noodling with about Complimentarity vs. Non-Complimentarity. How in situations, you have really only these two choices: to go with or against the current tide. Sara helped me see that the conversation between a company and the culture it's in is very similar to the conversation two people might have! Companies face that choice, too. Only, too many companies choose to go along with trends or not...not intentionally, but mostly unintentionally. And that's the thing about design: everything is designed, either well, or poorly, intentionally or unintentionally. Sara clearly helps companies and the people in them be more intentional about their work. In trying to re-design a conversation you're in, you can shift patterns by consciously pushing with or against them. David Bohm tells a great story about this in "On Dialogue"...a psychologist was treating a young girl who wouldn't talk to anybody. After an hour of fruitless attempts, he was exasperated and said "why won't you talk to me?" "because I hate you" she countered: She was pushing *back* on his energy, you see? So he asked "how long will you hate me?" she said "I'll hate you forever" Then he kept with it, taking the logic further "how long will you hate me forever?" Somehow, this broke the spell and the little girl laughed. He kept questioning her refusal... somehow, taking it seriously helped shift it. What is that behavior? He somehow accepted what was happening with the little girl, but questioning it in the right way, shifted the conversation. I learned about non-complimentarity from Invisibilia, an *awesome* podcast from NPR. I'll link the episode in the notes: in the show opening they talk about a group of people drinking wine in their back yard who get help up at gunpoint. They tell the robber they have nothing, so they offer him a glass of wine instead...which flips the whole script of getting robbed. Spoiler alert: it ends in a group hug. Enjoy that episode from Invisibilia and enjoy this episode, too! I hope you learn something about redesigning conversations for your own context...
