It's finally here folks, the intro to Ash's obsession for the last seven+ months... the case of Amanda Rabb.Amanda Rabb, a young Black woman experiencing homelessness and drug addiction on the streets of Skid Row in Los Angeles, California, appeared on the hit YouTube channel, Soft White Underbelly, in December of 2019. She was heavily featured on the channel and became someone that the audience was heavily invested in. "Mental health expert" Lima Jevremovic came on the channel in August of 2020 touting a new virtual reality therapy that she had come up with that could cure addiction, mental health issues, homelessness and more... and it seemed that her and Mark Laita, owner of the Soft White Underbelly channel, already had a "guinea pig" in mind. This is the introduction to Amanda's story and the insane web surrounding her tragic death.Ash also discusses addiction and suicide stats post election and her journey through the different phases of relapse.✨Please consider supporting us on Patreon, for early ad-free content and so much more for as little as $5 a month!

In today's digital age, we're inundated with a constant stream of information, making it challenging to navigate and make sense of what's important. And now, in the midst of increasingly-capable AI, the very concept of importance is coming into question. Could open source be the solution to managing our impending sensemaking crisis? In this episode of the Win-Win Podcast, we're joined by Peter Wang, a physicist, computer scientist, and founder of Anaconda, one of the most widely used open source platforms for Python development. Peter leads Anaconda's AI Incubator, which focuses on advancing core Python technologies and developing new frontiers in open-source AI and machine learning, especially in the areas of edge computing, data privacy, and decentralized computing. We dig in with Peter to discuss the history and politics of the open source movement, and the security concerns around open sourcing AI models. And we attempt to understand how open source software can enhance transparency and collaboration between players, and how these technologies can be harnessed to better navigate the complexities of our information-rich environment. In this episode long time friends and collaborators, Drs. Richard Frankel and Victor Krebs carry on a decade long conversation in person and in google docs resulting in the book, Human Virtuality and Digital Life, a delightful and rich discussion of the philosophical understandings of virtuality as well as implications for the psyche. Their discussions are far reaching and deep leveraging myths, critical thought, important philosophers and psychoanalytic theorists. In the end we discuss AI, thinking, dreaming, and the generational divide and post-truth political landscape that is fueled by technology. Virtuality has entered our lives making anything we desire possible. We are, as Gorillaz once sang, in an exciting age where 'the digital won't let [us] go…' Technology has revolutionized music, especially in the 21st century where the traditional rules and conventions of music creation, consumption, distribution, promotion, and performance have been erased and substituted with unthinkable and exciting methods in which absolutely anyone can explore, enjoy, and participate in creating and listening to music. Virtual Music: Sound, Music, and Image in the Digital Era (Bloomsbury, 2021) explores the interactive relationship of sound, music, and image, and its users (creators/musicians/performers/audience/consumers). Areas involving the historical, technological, and creative practices of virtual music are surveyed including its connection with creators, musicians, performers, audience, and consumers. Shara Rambarran looks at the fascination and innovations surrounding virtual music, and illustrates key artists (such as Grace Jones, The Weeknd), creators (such as King Tubby, Kraftwerk, MadVillain, Danger Mouse), audiovisuals in video games and performances (such as Cuphead and Gorillaz), audiences, and consumers that contribute in making this musical experience a phenomenon. Whether it is interrogating the (un)realness of performers, modified identities of artists, technological manipulation of the Internet, music industry and music production, or accessible opportunities in creativity, the book offers a fresh understanding of virtual music and appeals to readers who have an interest in this digital revolution. Shara Rambarran is Assistant Professor of Music at Bader International Study Centre, UK (Queen's University, Canada). She co-runs the Art of Record Production conferences and is an editor on the Journal on the Art of Record Production and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality (2016). This is the audio recording of my entire keynote at https://www.mmaglobal.com/impactindia... Since the beginning of the Internet, the concept of 'cyberspace' and 'online worlds' has been a constant theme and the subject of numerous famous science fiction plots, as well as the core objective of many startups. Given that we are now living in the era of exponential progress, science fiction is increasingly becoming science fact. Virtualisation is the inevitable future of everything, yet dehumanisation needs to be kept in-check at all times... Thanks to MMA India for inviting me! The SMO podcast team was at SXSW 2022 with the University of Arizona Wonder House. In this episode, Diana sets out to disentangle the culture of the city of Austin and the hyperconnected projection that is SXSW. Are they in a codependent relationship? What has SXSW done to Austin's music scene? Why do even tech-savvy people prefer f2f to online? And what does all this mean for the next frontier of tech experiences, Virtuality 3.0? Interviews with Austin residents and visitors include Thor Harris of Swans, Luke Savisky of the 1990 film Slacker, and the crew of the food truck Cocina de Carnival aka Big Bertha. This episode has considerable profanity! A censored version will be available at ivoices.org or https://ivoices.ischool.arizona.edu/social-media-and-ourselves. Big thanks to Thor Harris, Eric Redpath, Carlos, Paige Swift, Luke Savisky, and Pri. Also to Ravi, Ratziv, David, Jose Rodriguez and The Cocina de Carnaval Crew and their families. It was awesome being at the Wonder House, so special thanks to Misha, Joe, and the rest of the Wonder House team. Drums by Thor Harris were recorded in the spectacular installation "Volumes" by Ezra Masch. This episode of Social Media & Ourselves was produced by Diana Daly and scored by Gabe Stultz of the iVoices Media Lab, which is sponsored in part by the Center for University Education Scholarship at the University of Arizona. Virtuality allows us to connect beyond physical restrictions, this particularly useful during pandemic times, but it also gives relative impunity to negative behaviors like cyberbullying, mean comments, and insults. In the gaming space, this is no different; unfortunately, toxicity is quite common. A shortcut to fix this problem is addressing it, talking about it, and, as Wes Byrd suggests, presenting ourselves with integrity. Wes Byrd is the CEO and Co-Founder of Skullz, Inc. Wes is an entrepreneur, esports enthusiast, and e-commerce architect. Skullz, Inc. started as a gaming club in 1999, hosting LAN parties and building a healthy gaming community through things like their "rulez of war," which restricted foul language and toxic behavior. After more than 20 years, Skullz, Inc promotes non-toxic behavior, community, integrity, and sportsmanship while providing the highest quality gaming and esports gear. In this episode, Wes and Megan talked about toxicity in esports and gaming and the best ways to deal with it. Wes shares a bit of his background and some details of his journey into the gaming industry. They also spoke about the gaming industry during the pandemic, and Skullz, Inc's pillars, and the company's view on integrity. Plus, Skullz, Inc's products and their commitment to providing high-quality products.
