Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns – distinguished visiting professor at United Theological Semianry and professor of Christian Formation at Pentecostal Theological Seminary for 35 years – is a long-time friend of The Art of Holiness, and of me. She has been a great mentor over the years. You can find three other conversations with her in our vault so look them up. Today, we are also joined by her husband, Dr. Jackie David Johns, professor of practical Theology at Pentecostal Theological Seminary for 40 years. Together, they have written books, pastored congregations and raised great kids. Today, they come to talk about their latest project – a tremendous resource for pastors and laypeople alike – Encountering the Living Word: Relational Inductive Bible Study.
Daniel Tomberlin, assistant professor of pastoral ministries at Pentecostal Theological Seminary, joins the crew from Ministerial Care to talk about the kinds of conflicts pastors encounter as church leaders. Dan is an ordained bishop in the Church of God and served as a local church pastor for thirty-seven years, making him an excellent source of helpful information for pastors encountering conflict.
Dr Cheryl Bridges Johns joins Move Forward to discuss the meaning and importance of "discernment" in the church and its vital relationship in relationship to prophecy. Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns is a leading ecumenist, representing the Pentecostal movement in several venues. Ordained in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC), Dr. Bridges Johns has been a participant in the International Roman Catholic-Pentecostal Dialogue, the Mennonite (USA)–Church of God Dialogue, and Evangelicals and Catholics Together (ECT). Dr. Bridges Johns is the author of Finding Eternal Treasures, Pentecostal Formation: A Pedagogy Among the Oppressed, Seven Transforming Gifts of Menopause, and Re-enchanting the Text: Discovering the Bible as Sacred, Dangerous, and Mysterious (forthcoming, fall 2022). While at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary, Dr. Bridges Johns served in the Robert E. Fisher Chair of Spiritual Renewal. She is past President of the Society for Pentecostal Studies. Dr. Bridges Johns is currently Visiting Professor of Pentecostal Studies at United Theological Seminary.
Our next guest is Daniel Montañez. Daniel is an adjunct instructor at Pentecostal Theological Seminary and the Latino and Global Ministries Program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is the founder and director of Mygration Christian Conference and leads the Church of God Migration Crisis Initiative. Daniel is dedicated to serving migrant communities through ministry, scholarship, and social engagement. In this episode, we talk about Daniel's vision for the Mygration Christian Conference and how he's cultivating spaces for healthier conversation around understanding immigration from a biblical perspective. We also highlight Daniel's new book, The Church and Migration: A Theological Vision for the People of God. The book seeks to transform the narrative of immigration by approaching it from the larger lens of human migration by exploring the theme of human migration throughout the grand narrative of Scripture. We encourage you to buy a copy of this book to better understand what the Bible says about God's heart towards people on the move and how these truths can be applied in our modern world.

On a special episode of Mormon Book Reviews Rick Bennett of Gospel Tangents guest hosts the 100th episode of the program. We are joined by our friend Dr. Christopher Thomas of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary and and author of the book "A Pentecostal Reads the Book of Mormon: A Literary and Theological Introduction". The mission of this podcast is to highlight the beauty and diversity of God's Church – both in Chattanooga and the Church at large.Association with any denomination comes with both pros and cons. Although The Crossing changed its name to attract those who might have a negative view of the Church of God, this congregation has not strayed from its Pentecostal roots. In fact, Pastor Chad Harris has made it a point not just to understand the history of the church but to make sure The Crossing continues to offer an “authentic Pentecostal experience” that is grounded in sound theology and the Word of God. Check out this episode to hear Chad talk about how Pentecostalism is expressed at The Crossing and how he came to be their pastor and to listen as Chad and Adam discuss teaching and ministering to the next generation.Note: this podcast was recorded earlier in 2021.About Adam WhitescarverAdam is passionate about seeing God's people possess vibrant prayer lives to help them make a difference in the sphere of influence God has given them. Dr. Christopher Thomas of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary discusses similarities and differences with Mormon Culture. We also learn about the structure of the various Pentecostal Churches. As we've mentioned before, publication of the Book of Mormon pre-dates the Pentecostal movement by almost 8 decades. What are some examples? Dr. Christopher Thomas teaches at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary, and he shares his thoughts about speaking in tongues in the Book of Mormon. Chris: Then, the next big section of the book, I […] The post Pentecostals in Book of Mormon (Part 7 of 8 Chris Thomas) appeared first on Gospel Tangents.
There are lots of troubling stories in scripture: the sacrifice of Isaac, the banishment of Hagar. I'm going to get personal and share some of my spiritual struggles with these stories with Dr. Christopher Thomas, a theologian at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary. How will he respond? GT: But, at any rate, the whole story about […] The post Troubling Stories in Scripture (Part 6 of 8 Chris Thomas) appeared first on Gospel Tangents.
The Book of Mormon is known for talking about lots of wars, eventually ending in the extermination of Nephites. But is the central message a pacifist message? Dr. Christopher Thomas teaches at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary and made a startling discovery. The story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies is in the exact center of the book. Dr. Lee Roy Martin, a Professor at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary joins Dr. J. Ayodeji Adewuya to discuss holiness as reflected in the Old Testament.
I had the immense privilege of speaking to Dr. Chris E.W. Green for our very first Deep Dive episode. Dr. Green holds the title of Public Theologian at Southeastern University and has previously taught at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary in Cleveland Tennesee. He is also the author of numerous books including Surprised by God, which has a chapter on this very subject, Sanctifying Interpretation and Towards a Pentecostal Theology of the Lord's Supper. The idea for this whole series stemmed from a sermon Dr. Green preached at Sanctuary Church entitled God Is Not In Control. At the core what we are attempting to talk about is the mysterious ways in which God's actions in the world relate to ours and how we understand the things that happen to us. Ultimately Dr. Green and I agree, we must always confess that God is always good, always against evil, and always at work in ways which are for my good and the good of those around me. Gender | Celibacy | Marriage This week we have our friend Danielle Larson. She is a recent graduate of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary, and she shared her journey from being an engineer to working towards her Masters in Theology. We talked about how #Godisnotamale, or as her Facebook friends joked, ‘God is no tamale.’ We also talked about the danger in talking about God strictly as male. Naturally, we could not avoid talking about how our views of marriage and celibacy are affected when we talk about God as being a man. You can follow Danielle on Twitter at @DanielleELarson.
