Send us a textOn today's podcast, we're joined by Rev. Kelly Dignan. In 2017, Rev. Dignan advocated for, and led her congregation – the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder, Colorado – to become a sanctuary congregation, housing a Peruvian refugee mother and her children. Today's conversation will focus on the resurgence of the Sanctuary Church Movement during the past 10 years, and how this influenced the Unitarian Universalist Church – Boulder to open up their building as a sanctuary space. We will also discuss the difficulties involved with a congregation making the complicated decision to become a Sanctuary Church as well as the victories, joys, and celebrations involved with being a Sanctuary Congregation. "Sweet Times" is by All Bets Off, and is provided by Adobe Stock.

What happens when a pastor discovers the Bible doesn't actually condemn homosexuality? For Romel Parks-Weekly, this theological revelation changed everything. After founding a traditional church in 2002 while deeply suppressing his own sexuality, Romel's decision to write a book on homosexuality led him down a path of biblical study he hadn't expected. This episode follows Romel's remarkable journey from a young boy who always knew he was different to a conflicted minister who married a woman despite knowing he was gay to the founder of The Sanctuary Church—a truly affirming space where all are welcome. Matthew 9:35 - 10:1 In this message, guest speaker Emily Cordon Drainville, a pastoral resident from Sanctuary Church in Providence, preaches about Jesus' compassion for lost people. While it seems that people in Providence do not appear “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36), many are walking with deep hurt inside and are searching for answers. In recent months, Emily has witnessed an openness to Jesus like never before from her peers locally and from testimonies around the world. In summary, the harvest is plentiful! There is a great need for people to go bring the light of Jesus into their communities here in New England, and Jesus is empowering you through His Spirit to join Him in the healing work. This message is meant to encourage anyone who needs needs a fresh wind of Jesus' compassion for people in our spheres.
When Adey and Tom Wassink launched a Vineyard Church in the university town of Iowa City (IA) twenty-five years ago, it didn't take long to fill the worship center. A winsome and intelligent couple, they brought a love for the church, an intense engagement in the wider community and a focus on their own education. Tom, a medical doctor, when on to certify as a psychiatrist. Adey pursued and completed her doctorate at Fuller Seminary. In time, Adey was officially recognized as Senior/Lead Pastor. When the Vineyard denomination affirmed a policy prohibiting the ordination of women, the church left and changed its name. When Katie Imborek, M.D., attended, to her surprise, she warmed to the community and the worship. But she wasn't at all certain that it would be a “safe place.” Would she, her spouse, Paula, and her children be accepted by the congregation? Or would they face the harmful prejudices and coded messages all to often found in church? She wrote to Pastors Adey and Tom with direct questions about their attitude towards same-sex marriage, the clobber passages in the Bible, and the general attitude of the congregation to individuals and families like Dr. Katie's? That sent Tom and Adey into a period of deep reflection, introspection, study of their Scriptures, and open conversations with their people. They became Sanctuary Church. Ken and Dr. Tom explore the story told in their book, Sanctuary: Queering the Church in the Heartland.Brian McLaren says, “[This book] is a gift – a series of often humorous, often poignant, sometimes heartbreaking, and always well told stories and reflections – to help us all rethink what is normal or queer, what is sacred or scandalous, what is bad or good. We may just become better people in the process. May it be so!”SHOW NOTESBecome a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the show

Ash and Megan of Give Us Morgue wrap up this crazy season of Gruesome Gals!Natalia Grace Barnett- conniving little person or abandoned little girl? Natalia suffers from a severe form of dwarfism and was adopted by the Barnett family in 2010. Natalia's side of the story, along with that of a few other people, is much different. This one is a head scratcher for sure folks!Miss Megan already? It's finally here! We're about 90% sure this episode was cursed because of all the technical difficulties we ran into with it and because this lady is straight evil, but here it is! Ash is again joined by the fabulous Megan Powell of Give Us Morgue for the second to last episode of Gruesome Gals!Katherine Knight is Australia's most infamous female murderer and for good reason. She got her dream job at a slaughterhouse at age 15. Men found her oddly irresistible, despite her being a vile person in general and horribly abusive to all of her partners as well. As domestic violence often does, her behavior towards her last partner Pricey escalated and Katherine's final relationship ended in a grisly murder.Check out Megans's show wherever you listen to podcasts, check out her website giveusmorgue.com, and follow her on IG @giveusmorgue!-Crave more stories of gruesome gals? This was preached at Sanctuary Church in 2019, and it comes from John 2, when Jesus turns water into wine. What does it look like to have subversive joy in a culture of despair?

The calling of parenthood is to raise our children in the fear of the Lord. Yet, as all Christian parents know, this calling is easily lost in the chaos of life. We are juggling the various responsibilities of our households and the shifting challenges of raising our kids. In the midst of all this, how are we to teach our children to love God? My guest on today's show is Sarah Cowan Johnson, the author of Teach Your Children Well, and she helps us to accept the calling of parenthood with wisdom and faith. Sarah Cowan Johnson is a ministry trainer, consultant, and coach who works with church planters, pastors, and ministry leaders across the United States. She leads seminars for parents on family discipleship to help their children walk in the way of Jesus. She served with the Evangelical Covenant Church as the executive pastor for Sanctuary Church in Providence, Rhode Island, and previously was a staff trainer and an area director for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Adam Griffin, Cassie Bryant, and Chelsea Griffin are joined by Sarah Cowan Johnson to talk about her new book “Teach Your Children Well: A Step-by-Step Guide for Family Discipleship,” and how we can live as the creative minority in today's culture.Questions Covered in This Episode:Sarah, would you introduce yourself and tell us about you, your family, your ministry, and a little of your sports resume?Your new book is called, “Teach Your Children Well: A Step-by-Step Guide for Family Discipleship.” Tell us the story about writing this book where did the idea come from and why did you want to write it?You kick off the book talking about the research that shows how many kids are walking away from the church after high school. What do we take away from that? Can you describe what you mean by a “high grace and high challenge” and why that is important? Why is it so hard for parents to believe they have this grace and freedom and this weighty calling simultaneously? Why is living in a post-Christian culture changing or clarifying the role of families to disciple their kids in today's culture? Will you help us understand what the common responses of fight, flight, or camouflage look like for a church or a family? Why do you think that camouflage temptation is so strong for us as parents and how do we get past it? What do you think we should be doing instead? You talk about our churches and families forming a “creative minority” similar to Daniel and his friends in Babylon. What would that actually look like for families? Can you talk about what capturing a God moment is and how you encourage parents to go about doing this? You talk about our temptation for fear, control, and disbelief. How do you want parents to address and face those temptations when they do come?Your book has a lot of questions for readers to answer as well as ideas to try out. Would you share with our listeners some of your favorites that you've used at home? If our listeners want to pray for you and your family, what can they ask God for on your behalf?Guest Bio:Sarah Cowan Johnson is a ministry trainer, consultant, and coach based in Providence, RI. Helpful Definitions:Post-Christian: The culture is familiar with Christianity but chooses to reject it. Fight: Our response is a culture war, we want to take back the ground we are losing.Flight: Our response is to disengage from the world into an only Christian community.Camouflage: Our response is to blend in and compromise, adopting some of the values of the post-Christian worldview.Creative Minority: Our response is that this is not our culture, we are not going to be disruptive or give in. We will follow Jesus faithfully in a culture that doesn't. It is not just about what we believe, it is about how we live.Proactive Discipleship: Planning and thinking about spiritual practices for discipleship.God Moments: Responding to discipleship moments we can't plan for.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:“Teach Your Children Well” by Sarah Cowan JohnsonDeuteronomy 6:4-9Amazon affiliate links are used where appropriate. Creating a place where everyone feels safe, including the “misfits” of society—whores, drug addicts, child molesters, sinners—is no easy task, especially in today's political and social climate. But that's exactly what Eric Sandras, or Dr. E as he's known to most, has set out to do with The Sanctuary Church. On this week's episode of The Other Side of the Church podcast, Lathan got the chance to sit down with Dr. E and talk creating a church posture that reflects who Jesus actually was, not just what we want him to stand for. Together the two tell stories of how they've seen God's holiness in the most unlikely of people, discuss leading well in moments of divisiveness, and offer hope to those who have little hope in themselves. Episode Timeline: [1:09] Clearing the Confusion: How Jesus related with politics [5:53] The story of The Sanctuary [13:25] How to lead well in moments of divisiveness [18:22] Creating church posture - Rebecca's story [36:14] Dr. E's Hope Holler [38:04] Skip's story Resources Mentioned: The Sanctuary Church
In this episode of the Church Security Roll Call, we're going to be discussing Evil Invading Sanctuary.
CONTENT WARNING: Heads up, especially for any UC and ex-moonie listeners: This episode is pretty heavy on the cult content. We have a discussion about Sanctuary Church, a splinter cult of the main Unification Church. The discussion includes guns, violence against LGBTQ+, and alt-right ideology and conspiracy theories. If you're not up for it, feel free to skip this episode or come back to it when you are fully resourced. Here's what happens on the Jane Austen end: Darcy and Col. Fitzwilliam have left the building. Elizabeth is still processing the aftermath of Darcy's letter. Lady Catherine is still “wakadoodle”, Mr. Collins is still annoying. Elizabeth and Maria head back home and meet Lydia and Kitty at an inn on the way. Lydia does some shopping and fills us in on important gossip. Elizabeth is conflicted about how to relay what she's learned about Wickham without revealing too much. We learn we're all a little bit of a “Mary” Resources mentioned in this episode: ICSA- International Cultic Studies Association https://www.icsahome.com (ICSA), founded in 1979, provides information, education, and help to those adversely affected by or interested in cultic and other high-control groups and relationships. After Rev. Sun Myung Moon's death in 2012, his youngest son Hyung Jin (Sean) Moon, established The World Peace and Unification Sanctuary Church, The Sanctuary Church for short. Carl and Holly discuss Sean Moon and how he started this group after his father, Rev. Sun Myung Moon died in 2012. He broke from his mother, Hak Ja Han, after she took over the church instead of passing it on to Sean Moon as his father had instructed. Also known as the "Rod of Iron" ministries, they use AR-15's as their Rod of Iron as spoken of in Revelation 19:15 "And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron:" https://newrepublic.com/article/115512/unification-church-profile-fall-house-moon https://vimeo.com/139135707 - Explanation of split of Unification Church and The Sanctuary Church. https://www.rodofironministries.org/about https://www.rodofironministries.com/articles/peace-police-peace-militia-intro https://www.kristv.com/news/national/guns-and-god-the-church-combining-the-first-and-second-amendments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyung_Jin_Moon The Constitution of Cheon Il Guk https://www.sanctuary-pa.org/constitution The Divine Principle https://christkingdomgospel.org/archives/divine-principle/ Rulings https://www.sanctuary-pa.org/kings-rulings --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cultscoffeeconvo/message

It's not too ften that you hear of someone who finally realized their childhood dream as an adult. That's exactly what is about to happen to Seth Metoyer. From the age of 14, Seth and his buddy have been putting together Mangled Carpenter. "Why did it take so long?" you ask. Well, as a grownup now with a family and other responsibilities, life tends to happen. Mangled Carpenter's upcoming full length, "Under the Shadow," is the result of years of fine-tuning a blend of everything Seth wanted to hear in an extreme metal album growing up as a Christian kid with a taste for bands like Living Sacrifice, Vengeance Rising, Tourniquet, Deliverance, Mortification, and many other groups who laid the foundations for what modern faith-based hardcore and thrash has morphed into. He was so influenced by these artists that he actually moved out to California to live at Sanctuary Church, which birthed and fostered many of those early artists. What you get when listening to Mangled Carpenter veers off from the typical "djent" metalcore and deathcore we've all become so accustomed to these days. Metoyer unleashed his inner beast in the guise of grind and death metal that we don't get much of anymore from bands who are openly Christian. Just don't expect the norm when slapping on Mangled Carpenter's first couple singles. I had a chance to sit down with Seth Metoyer and talk about Mangled Carpenter and what he's all about. Of course we talk about movies, music, and more. We chat a bit about Metoyer's background, his favorite movies and TV shows, how he grew up, and other interesting aspects of Seth's life. Sit back and get acquainted with Mangled Carpenter and Seth Metoyer. Also, be sure and stick around after the interview for a sneak peek at Mangled Carpenter's new single "The Hanging of Judas." The track is just a small taste of what to anticipate from their debut full length, "Under the Shadow," which is coming out through Hagah Recordings soon. Seth offers some commentary on the song before it crushes your ears. *Editor's Note: The audio drops out between 14:50 and 15:08. Sorry about that. Just wanted to give you all a warning. For more info on the band, go to https://www.facebook.com/mangledcarpenter. To get more news, reviews, and interviews like this on a daily basis, be sure to visit www.moviesmusicmore.com.

Welcome to the Garden. We ventured back into the world of cults. Although related the the Moonies, The Sanctuary Church is not his father’s cult. We explore the AR-15 church. We also follow up on more lunar news and other Doom relevant items. As always, and more!
I had the immense privilege of speaking to Dr. Chris E.W. Green for our very first Deep Dive episode. Dr. Green holds the title of Public Theologian at Southeastern University and has previously taught at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary in Cleveland Tennesee. He is also the author of numerous books including Surprised by God, which has a chapter on this very subject, Sanctifying Interpretation and Towards a Pentecostal Theology of the Lord's Supper. The idea for this whole series stemmed from a sermon Dr. Green preached at Sanctuary Church entitled God Is Not In Control. At the core what we are attempting to talk about is the mysterious ways in which God's actions in the world relate to ours and how we understand the things that happen to us. Ultimately Dr. Green and I agree, we must always confess that God is always good, always against evil, and always at work in ways which are for my good and the good of those around me. Have a follow-up question to something that was said? Want more? Read and subscribe to my Substack feed to get more theological reflections and exclusive content.
