Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today is Barbra Streisand day! And what a day it is. Just one day after Babs herself announced the start to production of her approved documentary film, in which she plans to unveil the creative contents of her quite famous vault, we here at The B-Side tackle some of the legend's lesser-seen films. They include The Owl and the Pussycat, Up the Sandbox, For Pete's Sake, Nuts, and The Guilt Trip. Our guest on this long-in-the-making journey is Chris Feil, co-host of the incredible This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. We talk about the autobiography in all of its glory. We talk about Barbra's early years, Barbra's late years, her passion for design, her complicated history with movie directors, and her best albums. There's also hefty discussion about A-side Yentl, and why it's funnier and sexier than you remember. It's also a masterpiece. There's debate about how much The Guilt Trip ultimately worked, how exactly Barbra mastered playing a “regular person” by the time The Prince of Tides comes around, and how Nuts would've been better if Barbra had directed it. Additional highlights include mistaking Philip Bosco for Karl Malden, celebrating Richard Dreyfuss playing bothered to perfection, and Chris' post-TIFF takes. Mike Leigh and Marianne Jean-Baptiste save us! And just to note, if you're in NYC for NYFF62, come on out to one (or all!) of our four Cinephile Game Nights, on 9/28. 9/29, 9/30, and 10/8! You can win festival tickets among a bunch of other cool prizes. The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 19: Heart of Justice Aired on CBS: May 11, 1989 Directed by: Bradford May Written by : Gail Morgan Hickman Featuring: John Shepherd, Paul Guilfoyle, Vincent Gallo (!), Philip Bosco, Patty Mullen New York City in 1989. When the wheels of justice can't convict obviously guilty criminals because of legal loopholes, those criminals run free and, once they get drugged up, they can go out and spend the day terrorizing innocent people without any consequences. This is the case for The Equalizer in this episode, so much so that while he's trying to stop a man who's out for vengeance to right a legal wrong, that guy gets beat to the punch by ANOTHER dude who's out for vengeance to right a legal wrong, just in a more general sense. This episode has emotions, it has an EQ-patented intricate plan that explodes, and it acts as a "Stay Away" sign for anyone thinking of visiting NYC. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/
THE SAVAGES (directed by Tamara Jenkins, who also directed SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS, and starrring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman) is an often poignant comedy about adult siblings trying to get care for their elderly father, who suffers from dementia. That might not be the most expected pick from a director whose new horror film, IMMACULATE, now has the distinction of being NEON's highest grossing opening weekend ever. But it's the movie that speaks most directly to an all-to-common, yet rarely depicted phase of life -- one that Michael found himself in right at the moment his Hollywood career hit its stride. After this moving and open conversation, Jordan has one quick thing about GODZILLA X KONG.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Michael Mohan

Few things feel as perfectly 90's as "The First Wives Club," and we couldn't love it more. In a world of answering machines and bulky coats and sweeping Marc Shaiman scores is an all-star cast of ladies, and this week we're ranking our Top 5 BSA's, including a down in the dumps Debra Monk, Bette Midler at her most Joy Behar, Sarah Jessica Scene Stealer, Dame Maggie Smith's face journeys, and of course, with all the subtlety of a primal scream, the indomitable Diane Keaton. Along the way we queen out on Scott Wolf in "The Evening Star," Dan Hedaya in "Clueless," "It Takes Two," not seeing "Beaches," the Queening of Philip Bosco, and the musical theatre future of this movie. The Equalizer Season 1 Episode 22: Pretenders Aired on CBS: April 8, 1986 Directed by: Richard Compton Written by : Scott Shepherd Featuring: Tony Musante, Chad Redding, Philip Bosco, Ron O'Neal, Robert Lansing, Mark Margolis, Bruce Jarchow In the season finale, McCall protects a woman from her neighbor who's a whole thing - backed by the agency, dealing with Europe's biggest drug dealer, possibly out to assassinate the ambassador of the continent of Africa, not to mention waving his gun around in the hallway and being totally inconsiderate. This aired back when season finales meant not so much a culimation of an entire season's worth of plot building but rather maybe the well's run dry on what the Equalizer could possibly help someone with. Luckily for us the fount of details to make fun of overfloweth. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com
While 1997's "My Best Friend's Wedding" may appear to be a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts as our charismatic heroine, it's actually a psychological thriller in which Cameron Diaz as the kooky co-ed Kimmy becomes our heroine in peril, while the charismatic (and sultry) voice of reason is none other than George, an under-sung gay character (if not icon) of 90's cinema played by BAFTA-nominated Rupert Everett. Dermot Mulroney continues to be a delight to look at, even if his character might not be sharpest sports writer in the press box, Paul Giamatti pops up as a One Scene Queen, Susan Sullivan gives good Baranski, and dynamic duo Rachel Griffiths and Carrie Preston steal the show. We also have a lot to say about father of the bride Philip Bosco ("It Takes Two," anyone?), stressful kitchen scenes, Andy Garcia in "When a Man Loves a Woman," Lisa Ann Walter's wardrobe in "The Parent Trap," Cammy Diaz's big pork product energy, and feelings on the upcoming "My Best Friend's Wedding" musical. We have a special episode today. It's a tribute to the actor Philip Bosco. In this, you'll hear the voices of Armin Shimerman, Peter Van Norden, and Phil himself as Malvolio in Twelfth Night. Phil was quite a legend in the theatre scene, and he recently passed away, so I decided to finally sit down and put this together. Yes, it is sad, and at first, I thought this episode needed to be really somber, but it's also a celebration of Phil's life, what he did, and the many people he impacted! A few quick highlights about Philip Bosco: Won the Tony Award for Lend Me a Tenor, with another FIVE nominations, along with multiple Drama Desk nominations and one win Performed in over 50 productions on Broadway, playing all different styles and genres Over 100 Film and TV credits, including a Daytime Emmy Award Click here for full show notes and links.
