Later in the discussion he shared many on-set stories working with Mann on four additional films 1992's Last of the Mohicans, 1995's Heat, 1999's The Insider and 2009's Public Enemies. He also talked about shooting 1997's LA: Confidential for Curtis Hanson. Dante also offered his views on shooting film versus digital. For their 193rd episode, two suburbanite film critics, two nanny-gawking dads, and two accosted school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, circle back to a cinematic cottage industry found in the 1980s and 1990s of so-called domestic terror: stories that preyed on the pearl-clutching fears of the upper middle class. One of the best to get the audience's blood boiling was 1992's "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" directed by the late Curtis Hanson and starring Rebecca De Mornay. Twenty-five years ago, director Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) followed up his widely acclaimed crime drama classic LA Confidential with this quirky adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel of the same name.  This tells the simple story of Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) who wrote ONE great novel several years and is having.....some difficulties....writing the follow-up.  Beyond that, he has one headmaster's wife (Frances McDormand) who he's been having an affair with, a highly impressionable much younger student (Katie Holmes) who is enamored with him, a nebbishy editor/publisher (Robert Downey Jr.) who keeps hounding him for that next book, and.....a wayward student James Leer (Tobey Maguire) whom he gets mixed up with in some incident involving a dog that gets shot.  James Leer also looks up to Grady and also just might be The Next Great American Writer.  And there's more plot and several more characters to boot....plot is almost incidental as this Pittsburgh-set character comedy has more to it than plot.  How about interesting characters, comical situations, and loads of fun dialogue to boot!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast. This week, I've curated a lineup of films that capture different aspects of Los Angeles: its humor, its struggles, its danger, and its intrigue. Whether you're a longtime fan of these movies or discovering them for the first time, I think they're worth your time. Here's what we're watching this week:L.A. Story (1991)Steve Martin stars in and wrote this quirky romantic comedy that doubles as a love letter to Los Angeles. It's full of surreal humor, like talking freeway signs, and it pokes fun at the city's obsession with image and trends. But it's also heartfelt, exploring how we connect with others in a place that can feel isolating. Keep an eye out for some great cameos, including Patrick Stewart as a hilariously serious maître d'. The film was shot all around L.A., including Griffith Park and Venice Beach, which really adds to its sense of place.Born in East L.A. (1987)Cheech Marin wrote, directed, and stars in this comedy about a Mexican-American man who gets mistakenly deported to Mexico. It's packed with laughs, but it also has a lot of heart as it explores cultural misunderstandings. Make sure to check out Paul Rodriguez and Daniel Stern both have memorable roles here, adding to the film's charm. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)If you're into crime thrillers, this one's a must. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), it's a gritty and intense look at the darker side of Los Angeles. The film follows a Secret Service agent, played by William Petersen, as he becomes obsessed with catching a counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe). Friedkin's commitment to authenticity shows, especially in the car chases, which are some of the best ever put on film. The movie also features an amazing soundtrack by Wang Chung, which perfectly complements its tense, stylish vibe.L.A. Confidential (1997)Curtis Hanson's neo-noir is a masterpiece. Set in the 1950s, it dives into corruption, scandal, and ambition within the LAPD. The ensemble cast, including Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, and Russell Crowe, delivers some of their best work. Basinger even won an Oscar for her performance. The screenplay, co-written by Hanson and Brian Helgeland, is a brilliant adaptation of James Ellroy's novel. The production design and costumes perfectly recreate the glamour and grit of post-war Los Angeles, making it as visually striking as it is narratively gripping. That's the lineup for this week. Each of these films captures something unique about Los Angeles, from its humor and charm to its danger and complexity. If you decide to check out any of these, let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by The Video Store Podcast, and we'll see you next time with more movies to add to your watchlist. This is a public episode. Retrophilia: The '90s in Music, Film & Culture

Audra and Raymond are back from an unintentional sabbatical to discuss Neo Noir films from the 1990s. Not to be confused with “Erotic Thrillers,” Neo Noirs echo the first wave of Film Noir in both content and style. Certain American crime thrillers of the ‘40s and ‘50s were dubbed Film Noir by French critics for their similarities: dark subject matter (usually crime mixed with fateful romance), anti-heroes with confused morals, and stylistic use of shadows and low-key lighting. These were often B-movies and almost certainly featured a Femme Fatale to lure the hero down a dark moral alley. Her appeal and danger stemmed from her empowerment. Neo Noir films are intentionally made in this model, dating 1960s to nowsville. In the period of 1989 to early 2001, Neo Noirs surged, paying homage to the classics yet everything was more extreme: explicit sex and violence, and new moral dilemmas with a heightened focus on urban decay and consumerism. Join us as we discuss Michael Man's HEAT (1995), the Wachowskis' BOUND (1996), and Curtis Hanson's L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997). Note: we recorded this a couple of months ago. Since then, Audra's wrist has healed and she's had time to fall down the James Ellroy rabbit hole.

Later adapted into a film by Curtis Hanson in 1997, "L.A. Confidential" takes place in 1950s Los Angeles, where three policemen, each with a distinct brand of justice, cross paths after a deadly massacre takes place at a Hollywood diner. This story has everything you could want from a gritty noir - dames, murder, mystery - combined with the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood. But be careful; behind all that glitz and glam lies a dark underbelly that swallows people whole.... #LAConfidential #CurtisHanson #RussellCrowe #GuyPearce #KevinSpacey #KimBasinger #DannyDeVito #JamesCromwell #DavidStrathairn #BrianHelgeland #Noir #movieAdaptation #1997 #Booktoscreen #Titanic #FilmisLitPod #bookvsmovie #bookworm #LosAngeles #1950s #detectivestory #murdermystery #dirtycops

For this episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Blake Howard, film podcaster extraordinaire and the disruptive innovator behind One Heat Minute productions, to discuss the 1994 action-thriller THE RIVER WILD.Married couple Gail and Tom Hartman (Meryl Streep and David Strathairn) are in the middle of a relationship crisis and on the verge of separation, when they take their young son Roarke (Joseph Mazello) on a whitewater rafting trip. However, their vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter Wade and Terry (Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly), two criminals on the lam, who take the family hostage and force them to aid their escape through the notoriously treacherous Idaho rapids. This is a hugely significant film for multiple reasons. Not only was it one of the first major action movies of the era to have a female lead, but that lead happened to be none other than Meryl Streep! The guys start by discussing the film's ‘Die Hard DNA', and debate whether it's actually closer in spirit to DIE HARD or DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. They also talk about where this movie fits in among the popular 90s subgenre of ‘yuppie in peril' thrillers, and discuss director Curtis Hanson's eclectic filmography, along with his mastery of suspense and tension.  They talk about the gravitas that Meryl Streep brings to this fast-paced ‘divorce drama', and expound the virtues of David Strathairn, Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly, Joseph Mazello and Benjamin Bratt. They dig into what the film is really saying about family dynamics, and how it was ahead of the curve with its exploration of concepts such as gaslighting, toxic masculinity and micro-aggressions. The guys then take their raft down the L.A. river to get to the ‘Die Hard Oscars', before Blake and Liam go mano-a-mano in the ‘Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz'! THE RIVER WILD trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWew8lWYhtIAt the time of release, THE RIVER WILD is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, Redbox, Direct TV, Spectrum TV and all the usual platforms.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The year is 2000 and Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler have swapped movie recommendations, resulting in wildly varying degrees of satisfaction. Jake asked Brad to watch Wonder Boys, Curtis Hanson's charming film about Michael Douglas getting a third (or perhaps fourth or fifth) chance at love (with Frances McDormand) if he can only get over his bad habits and help his misfit friends and students. Said circle of friends is played by Robert Downey Jr., Tobey Maguire, and Katie Holmes. They talk about the terrific cameos present, Douglas's rare turn as a nicer guy, and where this ranks in Downey and Maguire's filmographies. Brad then assigns Jake Bring It On, and Jake isn't happy about it. They discuss how Peyton Reed's movie fails when compared to other high school snapshots of the era, and how Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst don't "bring" the level of quality we've come to expect of them. Can you guess which scene Brad thinks belongs in Tommy Wiseau's the Room? The logical endpoint of Film Noir, Curtis Hanson's L.A. Confidential stands apart as a buffet of Noir tropes devoured by a masterful cast. It serves as the ultimate movie of its genre, mashing together institutional corruption, prostitution, drugs, the seedy Hollywood underbelly, racism, and ethical policing. Upon re-viewing, Richard, Thorin, and Monte agree that it must be one of the most criminally underrated movies and possibly deserving a place on lists of the 100 best films of all-time. All month long, we'll be reviewing high concept action thrillers that involve environmental gimmicks in some fashion. This week, Kyle returns to the podcast to help Trevor review Curtis Hanson's, The River Wild (1994)! An excellent wilderness adventure-thriller set on a raging river, The River Wild (1994) is headlined by Meryl Streep, and also features Kevin Bacon as a terrific villain.
