As a modern single woman relationships can be tough, just ask Mollie (Kirstie Alley). She's having an affair with her married client, Albert (George Segal). When she gets pregnant things get complicated, so with the help of her mother (Olympia Dukakis) and best Judy, Rona (Twink Caplan) Mollie navigates the ups and downs of pregnancy all with the color commentary of her unborn baby, Mikey (Bruce Willis). After nine months, Mollie discovers that Albert is going through a selfish phase and will not be leaving his wife for her, he will be moving in with his interior decorator. That news sends her right into labor, and in a moment that changes her life she hails a cab driven by James (John Travolta), who not only gets her to the hospital on time, he steps up as a father to Mikey. That's not all though, we learned that all of this is based on the very true story of director, Amy Heckerling and her affair with Harold Ramis which gave us Look Who's Talking, this week on Doom Generation.Support this podcast at patreon.com/doomgeneration

Roy Scheider stars alongside Olympia Dukakis in BETTER LIVING, a comedy about a dysfunctional family dealing with the surprise return of their father. The Mikes aren't crazy about this one, but have you been watching THE PITT? Because you'll be hearing a lot about THE PITT in this episode!
Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with Tony winner Jonathan Groff, who is currently starring as Bobby Darin in JUST IN TIME. Tune in to hear some of the stories of his legendary carer, including why he never felt ownership over the role of King George in HAMILTON, what he learned from his experiences with fans during SPRING AWAKENING, why MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG is a love story, why he turned down the role of Finn on GLEE and HAIR on Broadway, his lack of formal training as a singer, working with Olympia Dukakis on THE SINGING FOREST, why he chose THE SOUND OF MUSIC tour over going to college, the serendipity of starring in A NEW BRAIN at Encores!, how Gavin Creel inspired him to publicly come out, what he learned from getting bad reviews for THE BACCHAE, working with Larry Kramer on the film of THE NORMAL HEART, JUST IN TIME's journey from the 92nd Street Y to Broadway, and so much more. Don't miss this honest conversation with a true Broadway star.
This month we're traveling back to 1987, starting with the Academy Award-winning romance, Moonstruck. Plot: Loretta Castorini, a bookkeeper from Brooklyn, New York, finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother of the man she has agreed to marry. Directed by: Norman Jewison Written by: John Patrick Shanley Starring: Cher, Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia
Nothing Like the Sun, or as it is written on the album, "...Nothing Like the Sun," is the second solo studio album by former Police bassist and front man Sting. The title comes from Shakespeare's sonnet number 130 which contains the lines, "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun." Sting was met on the street one evening, who asked him, "How beautiful is the moon?" Sting responded with this line from the sonnet. Two events play a lot of influence on this album. First, Sting's mother died in 1986, inspiring the lyrics to the opening track, "Lazarus Heart." Second Sting joined the Conspiracy of Hope tour for Amnesty International, and through this tour was exposed to victims of government oppression in Latin America. He was particularly moved by people in Chile for whom loved ones had "disappeared" in government actions, and wrote "They Dance Alone" as a description of the mourners who would dance the traditional Cueca by themselves with a picture of their loved ones pinned to their clothes.Sting's first solo album leaned into jazz. This second album continues to have a jazz influence but reaches across a number of other genres including reggae, funk, acoustic rock, soft rock, and world music. He brought in a number of solid musicians into the recording sessions including Gil Evans, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Branford Marsalis, and even his fellow Police alumnus Andy SummersSting would continue to further success after this album, which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard 200 chart. In the UK, ...Nothing Like the Sun debuted and peaked at number 1 on the UK albums chart.Bruce presents this adult contemporary album for this week's podcast. Be Still My Beating HeartThis second single from the album went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics are quite mature, describing the head telling the heart to settle down in the midst of an intense romance. The title was likely inspired by a 19th Century poem from Mary Elizabeth Coleridge. Andy Summers is playing guitar on this track. Little WingMost of this album is original music written by Sting, but this one is a deeper cut and a cover. Jimi Hendrix wrote "Little Wing" in 1967, and it appears on his "Axis" album. Gil Evans did a jazz arrangement of this piece in 1974, and provided this arrangement and backing with his orchestra for this cover. Sting's version runs just over 5 minutes, giving it a run time just over double that of the original Hendrix version. Rock SteadyAnother deep cut, this song is Stings humorous look at a couple who have volunteered to join a cruise, and later find out that they are joining Noah on the Ark. "Life may be tough, but we're sailing with the Lord." FragileThis is the fourth single from the album, and is a gorgeous acoustic piece. This anti-war song was likely inspired by Sting's work with Amnesty International. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That's Amore by Dean Martin (from the motion picture “Moonstruck”) This romance comedy starring Cher and Nicolas Cage delivered a Best Actress Oscar to Cher and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Olympia Dukakis. STAFF PICKS:The Promise by When In RomeRob starts this week's staff picks with the only hit from a British new wave trio. This track went to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became a popular song to play at weddings later on. It gained a revival in popularity when it was used in the soundtrack to "Napoleon Dynamite" in 2004. Got My Mind Set On You by George HarrisonLynch brings us a cover of a song originally written by Rudy Clark and recorded by James Ray in 1962. It is off Harrison's comeback album, "Cloud Nine." Harrison worked with Jeff Lynne on the album because he wanted a producer who wouldn't be intimidated by working with a Beatle. The teamwork went well, and the two would go on to form "The Traveling Wilburys" supergroup shortly thereafter.Dude (Looks Like a Lady) by AerosmithWayne features one of many hits from Aerosmith's monster "Permanent Vacation" album. The lyrics tell the tale of a man finding out that the "girl" he has bee pursuing at a club was a man dressed up as a woman. The idea for the song came from Motley Crue singer Vince Neil being mistaken frequently for a woman with long blonde hair.Mission by RushBruce closes out the staff picks with a song which arose from a conversation between Neal Peart and Geddy Lee about the perception people have that the rich and famous have easier lives. The lyrics reflect how every life has its own difficulties, and perhaps those who are highly successful would often wish for a more plain and settled life at times. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bailando/Aquatic Park by Carlos SantanaGuitar virtuoso Carlos Santana takes us out this week with a track from his solo album, "Blues for Salvador." Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. In honor of Women's History Month, I've selected four films featuring what I like to call “Wonder Women.” These are women who are brave, kind, strong, and all-around wonderful. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list—simply four films that resonate with me personally as a woman, and you should watch, whether you're a woman or not. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)First up is the 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Fried Green Tomatoes. The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy, among others. Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay. This film flashes between the 1920s and the 1980s, looking at Wonder Women through all stages of life. No matter where you find yourself, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film to enjoy with the wonderful women in your life. Steel Magnolias (1989)Next up is Steel Magnolias from 1989. Focusing on southern women's culture in the 1980s, Steel Magnolias highlights the friendship among six women who must persevere through difficult circumstances. Starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt, Steel Magnolias expertly blends comedy and drama, making a great movie full of Wonder Women. 9 to 5 (1980)The second Dolly Parton film in today's line-up is 9 to 5. The film, in addition to Dolly Parton, features Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. Highlighting 1980s office politics that are unfortunately still all too relevant today, 9 to 5 tackles serious women's issues with humor, making their points even more effective and poignant. This is a great laugh after the tear-jerking drama after Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. Alien (1979)The last film in our Wonder Women selections is 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph, Alien, is a phenomenal sci-fi horror film. Alien's leading wonder woman, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is an amazing sci-fi heroine. She's smart, brave, and resourceful, totes a flamethrower, and has a kitty-cat sidekick. What more do you want in a film about a Wonder Woman? We hope you enjoy these films and come back and see us next week on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This week, we can't help but fall victim to la bella luna as Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues with a classic rom-com about how it's impossible not to cheat if you're Italian. It's 1987's Moonstruck, directed by Norman Jewison, written by John Patrick Shanley, and starring Cher, Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Julie Bovasso and John Mahoney. The story of a young woman who accidentally falls in love with her fiancé's brother, the movie exudes charm at every turn -- so much so that this little rom-com took home three Oscars in '88, for Cher and Dukakis's performances as well as Original Screenplay for Shanley's script that is funny without being rife with straight-up jokes. There are rich characters here, beset by curses and fatal strains of bad luck, who get laughs not by mugging or ripping one-line zingers but by believing in the seriousness of their tragedies so completely. This is character-driven comedy of the highest order, grounded by the Canadian coziness that Jewison can't help but leave all over the film. Plus: J Mo's got theatrical field reports on both Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Companion. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, it is one of the more widely available films we have ever covered as Moonstruck is currently streaming in Canada on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Abigail, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, Identity, Trap, Fargo, The Wedding Singer, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Ocean's Eleven, L.A. Story, Paint, Napoleon Dynamite, ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, The Fabelmans, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Bicentennial Man, Bottoms and Punch-Drunk Love. Love Month continues next week with another VHS plucked from Hayley's collection as we'll be discussing 1996's Jerry Maguire with Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger, and will do our best not to get side-tracked discussing the Mission: Impossible franchise but can't promise we won't. Jerry Maguire is currently streaming north of the border on Crave, Starz and for free (with ads) on the CTV app. And of course we're closing out February with a rom-com canon selection, 10 Things I Hate About You. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Send us a textKatie and Bridget SNAP OUTTA IT! as they re-watch the 80's classic: Moonstruck! It's a movie all about how when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's amore... Aka it's Italian as hell! Come along as we meet Loretta, a woman who for lame reasons agrees to marry the biggest jabrony in NYC: Johnny. But when Johnny leaves to visit his dying mother in Italy, Loretta is tasked to meet up with his brother Ronny to try and convince him to come to the wedding. With a little self-loathing, whiskey, and talks of wolves and moons the two fall in love and get - ready for it? - MOONSTRUCK! Oh yeah there's also a couple other cheating subplots, psychological investigations, dogs, and grandpa's there too. We've got Brooklyn, Italian families, and a stage-play-set-up with this movie that earned Cher her Oscar! Released in 1987, it stars Cher, Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, and Danny Aiello.
As the moon grows fuller, our hosts and their fabulous guest, Andrea, find themselves quite Moonstruck (1987) by Cher's beauty and Nicolas Cage's dedication to his performance. Tune in as they discuss newly acquired vocal stims (MY HAND), the way Nic Cage should never say "To the bed" like that again, and how we should all revere Olympia Dukakis. Are men chasing youth (and women) to run from death? How many dogs does the grandpa own? Would you lose a hand to get out of a failing relationship? When can we get a Nic Cage werewolf movie? One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Tune in every Wednesday to find out.
Wiz RECOMMENDS Moonstruck What can be best described as the purest Italian charm offensive ever put on film, Moonstruck is a movie that is made just to make you laugh and smile. The reason is twofold: the great performances and characters. Let's start with the latter: all the characters from the main characters Loretta and Ronny to the supporting and even the ancillary characters are all likable and great to watch. Even when they yell, scream and denigrate one another, you can't help but to be enamored by the characters you are watching. That is helped by the charismatic performances in the film. The best ones are easily Cher as the widow who is reluctantly marrying and Olympia Dukakis as her mother, but also Danny Aiello as the dumb, lovable Johnny and Vincent Gardenia as Loretta's philandering dad are also hilarious and charming characters to follow. It should be said that for a romantic comedy, Moonstruck is much better as a comedy than a romance. Its cute and hilarious scenes and dialogue mask a romantic angle that, honestly, isn't as potent as you'd expect in a good romantic comedy. Then again, the film is so fun and enjoyable that it doesn't matter. Moonstruck is a movie that, no matter when you watch it, still feels as fun and enjoyable as it first came out.

Bruce Willis and Kirstie Alley brought their TV comedy chops to a romcom with a baby-voiced twist, Look Who's Talking. The 1989 flick delivered big numbers at the box office, spawned two sequels, and gave John Travolta a career rebirth. But now, decades later, has the new-baby smell worn off? Are toddlers and romantic comedies ever a winning formula? And what on earth is Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis doing in this? In which the Mister and I check out MOONSTRUCK (1987), which we caught on the TCM app but you can also find on PlutoTv, Roku Channel and to buy/rent on Prime Video. From an Academy Award winning script from John Patrick Shanley, the film is directed by the legendary Norman Jewison. The film follows Loretta Castorini (Cher, in an Oscar winning turn) a straightlaced, bookkeeper from Brooklyn who's accepted her boyfriend, Johnny's (Danny Aiello), marriage proposal. Immediately after, Johnny is Italy bound to see his dying mother but before he boards the plane, he asks Loretta to contact his brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage) and invite him to the wedding. The phone call doesn't go as planned so Loretta seeks out Ronny at the bakery he works at. They leave to talk, she makes him a steak and soon discovers there is a spark between them. Rounding out the cast is Olympia Dukakis (in her supporting Oscar winning role) as Loretta's mother, Rose; Vincent Gardenia as her father, Cosmo; and Julie Bovasso and Louis Guss as her Aunt Rita and Uncle Ray. The film is a true snapshot of NY in the 80s and a sweet trip down memory lane. The strong writing and outstanding performances still hold up and make this a worthwhile investment of your time. The film clocks in at 1 h 42 m and is rated PG. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. We are in the final stretch of Christmas in November and doing the classic movie Steel Magnolias. Yes, this is a Christmas movie (in Tamara's eyes, while Corinne calls it Christmas adjacent). It has a star studded cast including: Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirly MacLaine, Darryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis to name a few. With such powerhouse actors we don't need to tell you what the movie is about, you should just watch it! In this episode we ooze bad Southern accents, use Bless Your Heart as a threat, and Corinne considers this film an emotional colon cleansing and Tamara wonders if it will flush the holiday spirit out of her (probably not). This movie made us laugh and cry and declare that 'pink is our signature color,' so we hope you join us and the other Southern Belles as we recap Steel Magnolias.

We're winding down Family Movie Month with the definitively PG-13 talking baby movie that kicked off a trilogy, “Look Who's Talking”! Kirstie Alley and John Travolta have chemistry for days, and Olympia Dukakis was born to play Long Island mom Rosie. (But have you seen her as the lesbian cowgirl?) We also get Twink Caplan as work bestie Rona, Abe Vigoda's eyebrows, Bruce Willis riffing in a sound booth, a stunning George Segal, some admittedly weird baby talk, and of course, Lou. Today I talk with Christina Zorich, actress and film maker and the daughter of actress Olympia Dukakis. We talk about how an injustice like human trafficking broke her heart and how she used her gifts and talents to open other's eyes to how they can combat human trafficking. This episode is dear to my heart as I am the Executive Director of an anti-trafficking organization called Unbound Now. We talk about how we can learn about the injustices of the world and do something about it. Christina created A new multi-award-winning documentary – THE NEW ABOLITIONISTS - uncovers this dark world of trafficking in Southeast Asia and highlights four brave Christian ministries who are pushing back against evil, offering victims love, hope and freedom. From filmmaker Christina Zorich, THE NEW ABOLITIONISTS will be available on AppleTV, Amazon and other streaming platforms April 11, through Freestyle Digital Media. “Human sex trafficking is a global industry that exists for many reasons, including the fact that many are too scared to confront it, are in denial it exists, or don't know what to do to help. Here's a great thread from Vulture where a movie critic named Rachel Handler live-tweeted a rewatch. Most of the film's exteriors were filmed in Brooklyn, but many interiors were shot in Toronto.Sarah mentioned an essay by Emily VanDerWerff, Moonstruck: Life in the In-Between, about the beauty shop scene and how it can be analyzed as showing the power of the female gaze in Moonstruck. The last scene at the breakfast table is a good example of farce. An article about the making of Moonstruck and the ending scene played in the style of a farce, with lots of cool info on Loretta's grandfather, played by Feodor Chaliapin Jr.Jen liked all that moon stuff. When Cher won the Oscar, she was wearing a very memorable dress. May we all vow to live our 40s with her as our guide.
