In his tear-jerking video for his new single “Temporary,” Eminem reveals that he's going to become a grandfather. The song, included on the rapper's latest album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce),” is dedicated to his daughter Hailie Jade, who surprises her father at the end of the video by gifting him a jersey that reads “Grandpa” with the number one on it and a photo of her ultrasound. Three Days Grace have announced that original singer-guitarist Adam Gontier has rejoined the band -- and current singer Matt Walst is sticking around too. On Wednesday the band posted an audio message on their social media with Gontier leaving a message for Walst saying he was going to be late getting to the studio. A few hours after the Three Days Grace announcement Saint Asonia, Gontier's band with Staind guitarist Mike Mushok, posted a note on their social media that said "Thank you for all of your love and support. How can you not sit down with a couple of 80's heavy hitters for our month's dystopian theme “SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROW”? Especially the one we're discussing in this episode. This privatized authoritarian world of technocratic mediocrity might hit closer to home than any future film we're discussing all month. The near future setting of Old Detroit is extremely violent and absurd. There are no deep solutions. Only increased repression by corporate funded police. Barely anything works so if you don't die by getting shot 30 times then you'll probably go out in a much dumber way when your technology shits the bed. Paul Verhoeven sets up his reputation nicely with his ultra-violent, ultra-satirical 1987 sci-fi film “ROBOCOP” starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith and more. Officer Murphy meets his end and is reborn into a 24 hour policing cyborg. His natural training is essential but his memories of his old life are harder to deprogram. Robocop became an eighties cultural icon who once save the Pro Wrestler Sting from a cage after the four horseman tased him and locked him up. Unlike his mechanical contemporaries, Robocop stood the test of time. Robocop is really the only functional thing in this movie. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity.The film was conceived by Neumeier while working on the set of Blade Runner (1982), and he developed the idea with Miner. Their script was purchased in early 1985 by producer Jon Davison on behalf of Orion Pictures. Finding a director proved difficult; Verhoeven dismissed the script twice because he did not understand its satirical content, until he was convinced of its value by his wife. Filming took place between August and October 1986, mainly in Dallas, Texas. Rob Bottin led the special-effects team in creating practical effects, violent gore and the RoboCop costume.Verhoeven emphasized violence throughout the film, making it so outlandish that it became comical. Censorship boards believed that it was too extreme, however, and several scenes were shortened or modified to receive an acceptable theatrical rating. RoboCop was a financial success upon its release in July 1987, earning $53.4 million. Reviewers praised it as a clever action film with deeper philosophical messages and satire, but were conflicted about its extreme violence. The film was nominated for several awards, and won an Academy Award and a number of Saturn Awards.RoboCop has been critically reevaluated since its release, and it has been hailed as one of the best films of the 1980s and one of the greatest science fiction and action films ever made. The film has been praised for its depiction of a robot affected by the loss of humanity, in contrast to the stoic and emotionless robotic characters of that era. Robocop looks into the future where the Detroit police are privately owned by a corporation called Omni Consumer Product. After Alex Murphy a brave but naive officer is killed in the line of duty by a ruthless crime lord named Clarence Boddiker, Murphy's body is given to OCP for a pilot program that transforms Murphy into a cyborg called Robocop. The program seems to work and Robocop starts cleaning the streets until he realizes all is not right in his programming and there are sinister forces that led to his creation, including a pact between OCP VP Dick Jones and Boddiker's gang. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators.
