The blood-soaked Blood Simple represents the debuts of not only auteurs Joel & Ethan Coen, but also their star (and Joel's future wife) Frances McDormand. They don't seem to agree though with the widely-shared view that their first film was an expertly-plotted noir. It's one of their best movies, in fact. When the Coen Brothers go down to Texas to shoot a nihilistic movie about death and contract killings, classics like this and No Country For Old Men result. And considering it was an independent production without any stars, it was quite a hit. The brilliant highlight sequence is John Getz covering up what he thinks is the murder of Dan Hedaya, the man he's cuckolded. So enjoy episode #2 in Revenge Month and our 657th episode overall as we, yes ARE having a good time in our yellow suit and hat while we review Blood Simple. Well, Actually: the Sundance film festival (the "Utah/US Film Festival" as it was known at first) got its start in 1978, while the Toronto International Film Festival got its start in 1976. Also, Dessau is a neighbourhood in Austin, Texas, so the "Dessau" in the sign outside the club must refer to that. Also also, the reason Ray stops the car and runs away in shock is because he hears noise coming from the "dead" body in the back seat. Acquire outstanding beans from Sparkplug Coffee. On January 15, the entertainment world lost a truly unique and highly influential talent….David Lynch (Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks) who passed away at the age of 78 from emphysema. Over his illustrious career, he directed twelve feature films and was nominated for four Oscars including Best Director for this acclaimed classic released in the fall of 2001. Considered by many fans and critics to be Lynch's best film, this mind-bending mystery has since garnered a devoted following from cinephiles who have enjoyed developing and sharing theories regarding its complex plot. The overall story mainly focuses on two women, one an amnesiac nick-named Rita (Laura Harring) and the other an aspiring actress named Betty (Naomi Watts) who is new to town. The town is Hollywood, where dreams of fame and fortune sometimes come true....though more often they lead to bad things. :o And as these two ladies develop a relationship.....well as most other Lynch stories go, let's just say that they get pretty strange. Also included among the stellar cast are Justin Theroux, Jeanne Bates, Robert Forster, Brent Briscoe, Patrick Fischler, Dan Hedaya, and Billy Ray Cyrus. (Yes you read that right.) Rest in Peace Mr. Lynch….your legacy will live on WELL beyond your time on this earth. Welcome to Adventure month! First up the cult classic The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension! Written by Earl Mac Rauch, directed by W. D. Richter, and starring Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Smith, Christopher Lloyd, Clancy Brown, Vincent Schiavelli, Dan Hedaya, Robert Ito, Pepe Serna, and Carl Lumbly. It's a weird movie that deserved to be seen by so many more people when it debuted.
Send us a textI'm splashing out four dollars for going six minute over my plan this month....you better appreciate it. Whatever your favorite six minutes may be, imagine that is where I spent all that extra scratch, just for you. On Christmas night, we went to see Nosferatu in the theater for a TMLP field trip. And although Robert Eggers had us huddled together and quaking with fear afterward in the lobby, we still had something left in the tank. Enter Running Scared, a 1986 Peter Hyams epic tale starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal. The cast is rounded out nicely by Steven Bauer, Joe Pantoliano, Dan Hedaya, Jimmy Smith and our true hero, Jonathan Gries. And there may just be a very special guest at the table to help us ring in the new year! Dropping that ball like it's hot.
To end their "Politics" cycle, Madeline, Julian and Emilio put a different spin on their Close Up episode format by looking at three different actors' portrayal of one real-life political figure, former President Richard M. Nixon. The group welcomes in another Richard - Madeline's dad! - a retired history teacher and Watergate buff, to give these films and performances some important historical context. They discuss Oliver Stone's sprawling biopic 'Nixon' from 1995, the several stages of Nixon's political and private life depicted with impressive realism by Anthony Hopkins, and what is gained and lost when a film has such a wide scope. Next is 'Dick', Andrew Fleming's 1999 farcical reimagining of the Watergate scandal with Dan Hedaya as Nixon, where the group discusses the importance of mining politicians for humor. They close their discussion with a look at Ron Howard's 2008 film 'Frost/Nixon', featuring Frank Langella as Nixon, and consider where and when its helpful for creative liberties to be taken to depict real-life people and events. Tune in as Jameson Pfeifle (@sdfilmthoughts) teams up with Arthur for a review and recap of The Hunger, the 1983 erotic horror film that follows a vampire couple, the accelerated aging that has suddenly plagued one of the partners, and the human gerontologist who gets caught up in their alluring and dark world. The neo-noir layers that are given off by this movie's heavy atmosphere, playing around with traditional vampire tropes, and a questionable ending that had been jammed in by the studio comprise some of the subjects for this episode. Directed by Tony Scott, The Hunger stars Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, Beth Ehlers, Cliff DeYoung, Dan Hedaya, Rufus Collins, Suzanne Bertish, Willem Dafoe, John Pankow, and James Aubrey. “Last night, you were unhinged. You were like some desperate howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again.” We watched “The Addams Family” with our friends Michael and Callum from the amazing podcast “Once Upon a VHS” and we have the sudden urge for Girl Scout cookies. We've already covered the diva Debbie Jellinsky from the iconic sequel “Addams Family Values” in a previous episode, and now we're here to talk about where it all started. This entire cast is a complete and total serve from Angelica Huston's iconic Morticia to itty bitty Christina Ricci's perfect Wednesday and the legendary Raul Julia as the original “wife guy” Gomez. Because of the timeless nature of this movie this doesn't feel dated at all… that is until “Addams Groove” by none other than 90's legend MC Hammer graces the credits. Angelica can read you down with a simple look, Christopher LLoyd's Fester is insanely genius and MTMUG lucky charm Dan Hedaya graces the pod with his 9th appearance (that we know of!). Listen we give everyone in this cast their flowers and they all deserve them - this group of stone cold weirdos really came together and made spooky movie history. Send us a textAs we blast off into our 4th Season here at Fabulous Film and Friends, and with the recent release of Alien Romulus, we thought it only fitting to take a look at ALL the Alien movies, minus the execrable Alien v. Predator films, starting with 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphett Koto, John Hurt, Veronica Cartright and Ian Holm followed by 1986's Aliens, directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver again, joined by Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Lance Henrickson, Carrie Ann Henn, William Hope, Jeanette Goldstein, Mark Rolston Al Matthews, and Paul Reiser. Then we get 1992's Alien 3 directed by David Fincer, starring Weaver once again, with Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Ralph Brown, Pete Postelwaite, Brian Glover, Holt MccAllany, Lance Henrickson and a veritable slew of bald British day players yelling, "You bloody wanker!" Then there's 1997's Alien Resurrection directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Ms. Weaver, Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Dan Hedaya, Brad Dourif, JE Freeman, Kim Flowers Gary Dourdan, Dominique Pinon and Michael Wincott. Then there's a long break in the actual franchise with the aforementioned cash-grabs Alien v. Predator films thrown in the mix and the series starts up again in earnest with 2012's Ridley Scott directed prequel Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall Green, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, and Guy Pierce. In 2017 we're treated to Alien Covenant, once again directed by Ridley Scott starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Cruddup, Danny McBride, Callie Hernandez, Carmen Ejogo, Guy Pearce, everybody's favorite prankster, Jussie Smollet and blink and you'll miss them cameos by Noomi Rapace and James Franco. Which leads us to 2024's Alien Romulus directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Callie Spaeny, David Jonsson, Isabella Merced, Archie Renaux, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn and a posthumus Ian Holm. I'm your host Gino Caputi and the guests today are Burton Brown, David Johnson, DMD, Joe Field. With seven movies to cover we're going to get right into it, with one synopsis. Alien movies started off about a crew of space miners serving on the enormous mining vessel the Nostromo who while in cryosleep on their return to Earth with their minerals and ore in tow, are given orders to stop on the planet LV-426 to investigate a distress signal coming from a derelict spacecraft. While investigating the phenomena the crew inadvertently bring an alien on board their vessel. The Alien picks off the crew one by one and it is only warrant officer Ripley who survives by destroying the Nostromo and ultimately shooting the alien out into space. An internet meme sums it up thusly:Alien 1 - A team of miners faces an AlienAliens - A team of marines faces a lot of AliensAlien 3 - A group of convicts faces one AlienAlien Resurrection - A team of pirates face 5 AliensPrometheus - A team of scientists inadvertently create the AlienAlien Covenant - A team of colonists face a a lot of AliensAlien Romulus - A team of babyfaced Gen Z 'ers face a lot of AliensWhich is Queen of the Hive? It's Die Hard in a tunnel! This week, Phil and Liam dig in, around, and underneath DAYLIGHT, Rob Cohen's 1996 disaster movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Amy Brenneman, Jay O. Sanders, Dan Hedaya, Stan Shaw and Viggo Mortensen! When a freak accident causes both ends of an underground tunnel in New York to collapse, a group of random strangers find themselves trapped below the Hudson River. The only person seemingly capable of helping them is Kit Latura (Sylvester Stallone), a disgraced former EMS Chief seeking redemption for his role in a past tragedy. The guys start by discussing the disaster movie genre in general, placing this throwback film in a wider context, as part of a grand tradition of similar motion pictures that date back to their 1970s heyday. The original DIE HARD has its roots in the disaster movie genre, having been directly inspired by THE TOWERING INFERNO, one of several such films discussed (unflinchingly) in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section, along with the AIRPORT franchise that influenced DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER.After analyzing the film's premise, hero, and quirky cast of supporting characters (that includes a billionaire rock-climber, an Al Powell-esque uniform cop and a playwright with terrible taste in musicals), Liam presents his Earth-shattering theory that this entire film is in fact a Jesus allegory! The boys bust into ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out some action movie awards and cap things off with a mind-boggling edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz!DAYLIGHT trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRWIfCpxNK4 At the time of release, DAYLIGHT is streaming on Starz in the US, and is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, and all the usual platforms! Emilio, Madeline, and Julian finish off their cycle on High School Movies with a "Close-Up" on the great director Amy Heckerling, and a selection of her school-based films. The trio kick it off with 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," Heckerling's directorial debut and an unforgettable ensemble comedy/drama with a Cameron Crowe-penned script and career-defining performances from many of its stars. To follow, they then take a look at 1995's "Clueless," Heckerling's mid-90s, Beverly Hills-set adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma," and a trendsetting masterpiece influential to many later movies set in high school and beyond. And to finish off, the trio shed some light on 2000's "Loser," a college film to punctuate the episode cycle, and one that may have done better critically and at the box office had Amy Heckerling been allowed more autonomy in its production. The latest episode in our Criterion series finds Matt & Ashley looking back at the 1995 dark-comedy thriller, To Die For, starring Nicole Kidman.
Writer, comedian, and Lydia Tár's former publicist Daniella Mazzio joins to discuss Gus Van Sant's sharp, pitch-black satire of media, true crime, and a patently American brand of late 20th Century celebrity, 'To Die For'. The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, itself inspired by the true life trial of Pamela Smart, who seduced a teenage boy and coerced him and a friend to murder Smart's husband. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators. Then, we examine the brilliant, kaleidoscopic script by 'The Graduate' screenwriter Buck Henry and how the film's patchwork construction foregrounds it thematically rich details. Finally, we discuss the real life inspiration for the film as well as the way the movie's indictment of the American media landscape anticipated elements of the OJ Simpson trial, which was playing out during the film's production and concluded just days before its release. (Editor's Note: This episode was recorded before OJ Simpson's death on April 10th, 2024 at the age of 76).Follow Daniella Mazzio on Twitter. Every major filmmaker has to start somewhere....and this Neo-Noir thriller was the feature filmmaking debut for Joel and Ethan Coen forty years ago. Yes the same brothers who have delivered many memorable films since then including Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, Inside Llewelyn Davis, and No Country For Old Men for which they won Best Picture at the Oscars. This is the simple story of four people in the heart of Texas: a bar owner (Dan Hedaya), his wife (Frances McDormand), her secret lover (John Getz), and the mysterious stranger (M. Emmet Walsh) hired by the bar owner to spy on them....and possibly more? :o Of course, things get increasingly dicey and violent from there....it's time to revisit one of the more influential thrillers of the 1980's. Ever wondered why "Joe Versus the Volcano" stirs up such a potent mix of nostalgia and humor? Ana and Jimmy break down this peculiar '90s classic, starring the dynamic Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Their trip down memory lane isn't just a recap; it's a treasure trove of insights about the film's unique place in the romantic comedy genre, and we have a blast scrutinizing the whimsical world created by John Patrick Shanley and produced by none other than Steven Spielberg. We also stack it up against other '90s hits to give you a sense of where it stands in the crowded field of throwback cinema.Dive into a sea of split opinions with them as they navigate through the polarizing waves that "Joe Versus the Volcano" made upon its release. Critics like Jeffrey M. Anderson and Roger Ebert lauded its charm, while others weren't so enchanted. They sift through the spectrum of reactions, appreciating the undeniable chemistry between Hanks and Ryan, and debating whether the film's quirky narrative has sailed smoothly into the present day. And for those moments that make you say, "Wait, what?" they're right there with you, laughing and analyzing every quirky twist and turn.Join them as they cast off on the adventure of rewatching this cinematic oddity, complete with office drudgery, existential escapades, and yes, a volcano-bound wedding. They tackle the film's stylized opening, its satirical jab at the humdrum of 9-to-5 life, and the fantasy of ditching it all for a life less ordinary. From the chemistry between Hanks and Ryan, the unforgettable Lloyd Bridges to Dan Hedaya's unforgettable scene-stealer, their discussion is anything but mundane. So hop aboard for a lively journey through the highs and lows of this island adventure, and find out where they ultimately rate "Joe Versus the Volcano" on the scale of beloved cult classics.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

In this episode, I'm going Commando. The 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic bullets and bodies action extravaganza, that is! I'm going retro this week since there's nothing good enough at the theaters to review for my beloved movie maniacs and fellow freedom-fueled film fanatics. Commando is about ex-Special Forces soldier John Matrix trying to save his daughter after she's kidnapped to force him to assassinate a president. Matrix escapes the baddies tasked with escorting him to the country to kill the president, and the action blows up from there. He's joined by Rae Dawn Chong, as Cindy, who involuntarily at first, becomes his valuable ally. Will he get his daughter, played by Alyssa Milano, back in time? Of course he will! Commando also stars the late great Bill Paxton in a small role, Dan Hedaya, Vernon Wells, David Patrick Kelly, James Olson, Bill Duke, Drew Snyder, Sharon Wyatt, Michael DeLano and Bob Minor. "It's the 90s, plastic surgery is like good grooming." More prophetic words were never uttered on screen. We watched "The First Wives Club" (1996) with our friend Jack Fields and you'll have to excuse us while we spontaneously burst out into a rousing rendition of "You Don't Own Me" while wearing our finest ivory pants suits. We still don't know how we let this '90s classic slip passed us all this time, but now that we've seen it you can trust and believe we are full fledged members of the club. It took us a minute to reconcile the fact that we may or may not be closer in age to Dianne, Bette and Goldie's characters than we're comfortable admitting, but once we got passed that little tidbit we were fully enthralled. Watching those three powerhouse comedic actresses let loose while sharing top billing is a sight we don't often get to see these days - and the rest of the cast is filled with MTMUG faves : Stockard Channing! Maggie Smith! SJP! Dan Hedaya! Elizabeth Berkley! Don't worry, we're adding this super quotable movie to our repertoire of daily non-sequitur film quotes! Mary, Zach, and Charlie join Caitlin to cover Swimfan. It's a real time capsule of a movie; it'll take you right back to 2002. It has a monstrous femme figure in stalker Madison, and it gives us themes of obsession, deception, and troubled pasts. It also gives us an iconic pool scene. In perhaps the most unhinged second-half of a Plug It Up episode to date, we explore the following tangents: birthdays, Twilight (and Skin of a Killer), chugga chugga as it relates to choo choo, game shows, hibachi, coitus, juice (including "doodoo juice"), lots of pool talk, DP of all kinds, Michael Shannon, and some great FMKs.

Mulholland Drive (2001) Dir. David Lynch Starring: Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, Ann Miller, Mark Pellegrino, Robert Forster, Dan Hedaya, Angelo Badalmenti Wake up pretty girl, we're talking about David Lynch's 2001 mind-bending surrealist neo-noir mystery film Mulholland Drive. After months of waiting, Alex is finally forcing his "David Lynch era" upon the TDBR world, and coincidentally aligning with Austin's descent into hippy-ism with dream analyzation and transcendental meditation up for discussion. This genre-crossing film encapsulates soap-opera drama while also fusing itself with elements of noir, mystery, psychological-thriller, dark comedy, and horror. With top-notch direction, sound design, score, and performances, we'd have enough to talk about for a longer than average podcast - but its multi-layered story and (possible) metaphorical allusions to the lie of the "Hollywood Dream" gives us more than enough to talk about.
After the smashing success of TRAINSPOTTING, Danny Boyle reteamed with star Ewan McGregor and writer John Hodge to…make a movie where Dan Hedaya plays the Archangel Gabriel, Stanley Tucci plays a cuck dentist, and Ewan has one of the worst haircuts in the history of cinema? Shockingly, 1997's A LIFE LESS ORDINARY was not a hit. Actress and comedian Janet Varney (The Legend of Korra, “The JV Club”) joins us as we attempt to make sense of this bizarro road trip romance. This week on JFD, the hosts are left to their own devices and pick three random films they've been itchin' to discuss. Up first, Sean continues his personal theme month of Japan-uary, inspired by his recent travels to Japan and brings us a vintage anime about a boy and his dog getting to the bottom of a local mystery and finding his true origins in Flying Phantom Ship from 1969. Next, we take a look at The Coen Brothers' humble beginnings with the noir-inspired Blood Simple from 1984 about a murder-for-hire plot involving Dan Hedaya, Frances McDormand, John Getz and M. Emmet Walsh. And finally, we uncover a "lost" low-budget Ohio horror flick Heartland of Darkness from 1989 about a Satanic cult in a small town and the local reporter determined to get to the bottom of it. The film stars scream queen Linnea Quigley and friend of the show Nick Baldasare! All this plus all of Parker's heroes are getting cancelled, Kevin's pinball adventures, we find out about even more stop-motion magic from 2022, Jackie Chan-uary, and so much more.LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net.
