Episode Notes
Episode Notes In this episode of Sunday Edition, Anthony sits down with Gabriel Habech, the co-creator of Fovionics, to dive deep into the story behind a revolutionary piece of wearable tech designed for the blind and low vision community. Gabriel shares how he and his co-founder first met while studying engineering at FIU and began collaborating on ways to use technology for real-world impact. Inspired by Gabriel's close family friend Augusto — who lost his vision at age 7 — the two began exploring solutions that address challenges canes alone can't solve. The result: Fovionics smart glasses, equipped with innovative object detection sensors and an AI companion built specifically with feedback from our community. During this insightful conversation, Anthony and Gabriel walk through the development process step-by-step, answer listener questions, and unpack how Fovionics is the first to use this specific type of sensor in smart glasses, allowing for detection of hazards like low-hanging branches and signage — often missed by traditional mobility tools. They also discuss the real cost of access technology, how Fovionics' subscription model can help ease financial barriers, and why early community involvement is essential. With only 200 Early Adopter slots available and about 30% already filled, there's still a chance to help shape a tool that could transform lives — making it more responsive, intuitive, and affordable. If you're interested in being part of this exciting project, visit the links below: - Early Adopter Program - Interest Form The episode also explores the fascinating eye-to-brain and ear-to-brain connection, and how artificial intelligence and sensory input are getting us closer to real-time, adaptive tools — while acknowledging there's still more progress to be made. Participating in this beta could play a vital role in moving access tech forward for everyone. Don't miss this important conversation about innovation, advocacy, and inclusion — and how you can be part of the future of assistive tech. --- How to Listen: - Tune in every Sunday at 1 PM Eastern on 2020 The Beacon - Or search for Sunday Edition with Anthony Corona wherever you get your podcasts Join the Sunday Edition Family: - Facebook Group: Above the Fold: The Sunday Edition Conversation Space - To subscribe to our email list, send a blank message to: SundayEditionNews+subscribe@groups.io --- Coming Soon: Behind the Music Presented by Sunday Edition – The AI Open Mic Every third Friday of the month on 2020 The Beacon, we're opening the virtual stage for AI-generated creativity. Episode Notes Hey everyone… Before we dive into a great conversation this afternoon with Rod I wanted to share a memory that goes along with the theme: a genie for Christmas. When I was much much much much much younger, our elementary school used to put on a Christmas extravaganza and each grade have their own play. For a while, one of my younger cousins was staying with our family while his mom was out of the country for work. It was during the Christmas season and she would be home the day before Christmas Eve, which that year was the last day of school for us and the day of the Christmas extravaganza. The kindergarten class which my younger cousin was in always performed.a teacher written play based on the 12 days of Christmas and my little cousin was chosen for the exclusive part of: five golden rings! So the big surprise was for my aunt to slip in the back of the auditorium during the extravaganza And surprise my cousin! Well… The surprise worked! I don't remember if it was eight… Nine… 10… But during the countdown when there was that wonderfully dramatic pause, my cousin would ring out in his clear beautiful voice: five golden rings. However, during that eight, nine, 10 or what number it was he looked up and saw his mom sneaking into the back of the auditorium and instead of calling out five golden rings, he said in the sweetest, most vulnerable most affectionate voice: Hi mommy And the whole audience corrupted in cheers and well meaning laughter. To this day, I can still very clearly remember the look on his face and the sound in his voice when he realized his mom was there to see him perform. I have a lot of favorite Christmas memories, but this one is definitely and the top five. But I digress as I'm known to do… Hopefully Many of you will listen to this great conversation with Rod later on today This Sunday on Sunday Edition with Anthony Corona 1 PM Eastern on 20/20 The BEACON — or later wherever you get your podcasts. Get ready for a jam-packed episode featuring the one and only Rod Clemmons — Grammy-nominated, totally blind independent R&B artist, songwriter, music producer, keyboardist, conductor, and now, a rising force in film and television. Rod joins Anthony to talk about his upcoming R&B album, his groundbreaking media projects, and the deeply personal holiday movie that's capturing hearts: “A Jeannie for Christmas.” Inspired by beloved music teacher Jeannie Boyce and the legendary student Christmas productions at the Arkansas School for the Blind, this film is a heartwarming, authentic celebration of community, tradition, and talent. What makes it even more special? It features actual blind and low vision elementary and high school students—bringing real representation to the screen, employing blind talent both in front of and behind the camera. A Jeannie for Christmas is proudly endorsed by the American Council of the Blind and the American Foundation for the Blind and is shaping up to be a landmark in inclusive holiday storytelling. Rod will also share updates on his three original television series in development, including The Doodie Doos, a cartoon series created with fellow Grammy-nominated artist Dan Kenneth, and Best Friends, a heartfelt slice-of-life half-hour show. His insights help frame Justin's journey within the broader fight for equality and access in education and beyond. With vulnerability and strength, Justin speaks openly about his disabilities, his journey, and his life—offering powerful insight into what it means to live in America today as a disabled person. The HET device breaks down barriers to effective and engaging conversations by raising awareness of non-verbal communication cues in real-time. The technology leverages computer vision/ AI to detect and recognize the expressions, gestures, and body language received from an embedded camera on a pair of glasses before mapping the NVC to a dynamic haptic pattern applied to the forearm of the user on a wearable sleeve that is an inch bigger than a watch. With the HET you can tell if someone is smiling, going for a hand shake or waving at you in real time. Jack Walters is the CEO and Co-founder of HapChic. As a student-athlete at the Colorado School of Mines, where he plays collegiate football, Jack has already earned a degree in mechanical engineering and is currently pursuing a master's in engineering and technology management. He is passionate about developing human-centric, equitable assistive technologies that benefit people from all backgrounds. He has dedicated the last decade of his life to developing wearable assistive technology that provides end users with an increased awareness of their environment and during social interactions. We will get to hear some of the sample description they come up with and we will chat about the process. Dr. Joel Snyder is known internationally as one of the world's first “audio describers,” a pioneer in the field of Audio Description, a translation of visual images to vivid language for the benefit, primarily, of people who are blind or have a vision impairment. Since 1981, Dr. Snyder has introduced audio description techniques in over 40 states and 65countries and has made thousands of live events, media projects and museums accessible. Most recently, Dr. Snyder was named a Fulbright Scholar to train audio describers in Greece and Ukraine over a four-week period. Then in our second hour we will discuss the changing regulations for flying with our Guides, travel forms and the founding of Open Doors Organization. **Eric Lipp, Executive Director, Open Doors Organization ** Eric founded Open Doors Organization (ODO) in 2000 after personally experiencing the restrictions that people with disabilities face in everyday life due to a lack of awareness and knowledge by businesses. In the 23 years since, he has assisted countless companies, primarily in travel, tourism, and transportation, to better serve the disability community while also encouraging individuals with disabilities to travel. Among his most notable accomplishments are the four Market Studies on Travelers with Disabilities, most recently in 2020, which are viewed in the travel industry as the definitive source for statistics on travel by Americans with disabilities. Eric has worked on numerous government-funded research projects focused on accessible travel under the United States National Academy of Sciences including the Multimodal and Accessible Travel Standards Assessment, ACRP Report 210 “Innovative Solutions to Facilitate Accessibility for Airport Travelers with Disabilities", and the Accessible Transportation Technologies Research Initiative's "User Needs Assessment", which determined the general categories of disability recognized in travel-related research today. Eric is a recognized expert in universal design, the unique needs of people with all types of disabilities, and U.S. and international disability regulations. He sits on multiple advisory boards including those of Alaska Airlines, Amtrak, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, United Airlines, and the Transportation Security Administration's Aviation Security Advisory Council, where he co-chairs the Passengers with Disabilities Working Group. He was also recently appointed to the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board under the U.S. Department of Commerce. Find out more at https://acb-sunday-edition.pinecast.co

Spending many wonderful hours getting to know each other before they finally met in person in 2013. In May of 2013, they became a couple and started their life together. They live in Ann Arbor Michigan, the state they are both originally from. And Finally: Dan and Janeen are an unlikely duo of Oscar and Elmo. He is always grouchy and she is always full of energy and colorful. They have been together off and on for nine years and are recently engaged. They are board game enthusiasts and baking enthusiasts, and love to roadtrip all over the United States. Driving is way more fun than taking airplanes especially when Janeen really hates flying and Dan loves driving. Also, they love advocacy and volunteerism, which they share together. They both really really love music even though it's opposite: Janeen‘s a boy bander and Dan is a classic rocker all the way. They enjoy concerts and go to so many they can't even count in a year. Sunday Edition Presents: The High Partial Experience Last Month Sunday Edition began a series of conversations to promote understanding and move towards healing and uniting. This month we will continue with the High Partial Experience. Some of us may agree that there seems to be a hierarchy of status in our community. . There are certain cliques and groups that feel micro-aggressions and differing treatment by other groups and cliques. With all the disagreement of late in our organization it has become clear we need to begin the hard work of understanding and respecting each other for our shared advocacy and issues as well as; if not more important our differences.
