It received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office failure grossing only $29 million against its $25 million budget. The film was Reitman's final directorial effort and Jim Brown's final acting role before their deaths in 2022 and 2023 respectively.Any Given Sunday is a 1999 American sports drama film directed by Oliver Stone depicting a fictional professional American football team. What happens when the acclaimed and idiosyncratic director of JFK, Natural Born Killers, and The Doors attempts to direct a conventional sports drama about his favorite sport?  Multiple Oscar-winner Oliver Stone showed us back in December 1999 that the result would be clearly anything BUT conventional!  And he had quite the cast for this epic tail of a few weeks in the life of the fictional Miami Sharks, a professional football team at a crossroads.   They have a hot-headed new owner (Cameron Diaz) trying in to rein their beleaguered veteran coach (Al Pacino) and have also just lost their veteran quarterback (Dennis Quaid) to a severe injury so they have to replace him with a third string quarterback (Jamie Foxx) with something to prove.  And what results is a wild 160 minutes of big budget football insanity jam-packed with game-related violence, debauchery, and VERY loud arguments!  Also included in this stacked cast are James Woods, LL Cool J, Jim Brown, Aaron Eckhart, Matthew Modine, John C. McGinley, Lela Rochon, Lawrence Taylor, Elizabeth Berkley, AND the late great Charlton Heston. :) It's time to make a run for the Pantheon Cup....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

“It was a dream come true,” says Lindsley Allen, dancer, dance educator and creative choreographer about her role in the now-iconic dance film Showgirls, starring Elizabeth Berkley. Originally, the movie was supposed to be the big dance movie of its generation—something of a “Basic Instinct” meets “Flashdance.” Though the initial reception was less than ideal, in the 30 years since its release, the film has become a cult classic, with fans memorizing every line, and its star—who so unfairly bore the brunt of the backlash—has gone on to receive long-overdue acclaim. Today, Lindsley discusses what it was like to work on such a major movie production, why it was initially misunderstood and now so beloved, and why dancers should always be consulted when making a film about dance.    Just as “Showgirls” paved the way for later, more lauded films like Demi Moore's “Striptease,” dancers like Lindsley and host John Corella paved the way to improve the regulations, conditions and rights of dancers working on major film productions. Lindsley discusses what it was like to film the scenes in which the dancers performed topless, working with legendary choreographer Marguerite Derricks, and how her training program The Boom Effect is helping to prepare emerging dancers with bankable skills.    Join today's episode of Dance Dad to hear Lindsley recall fondly what it was like to be part of what turned out to be a cult classic.   Quotes “It was a huge call…to me it was, everyone was there that was of the A-list category. It was insane. It was a huge audition…and I wanted to get the job. It was big names, it was a big studio, it was a long job for dancers.” (9:47 | Lindsley Allen) “I really think they thought it was going to be…the serious musical drama. They didn't know it was going to be a cult classic. So, when it didn't do well that first weekend, it wasn't what they expected, I'll say it like that. It wasn't what they expected that weekend, and we kind of knew on the inside because some of us as dancers, some of those scenes, we were thinking, ‘Well, we wouldn't really say that, as dancers, we wouldn't really do that.'” (20:00 | Lindsley Allen)  “It's because it's so over the top—the acting, the dancing—actually, the dancing might be the most grounded thing in it…you don't laugh at it, you're kind of laughing with it, with love…I think that makes perfect sense and I'm so glad that you said that. I think that is why it became a cult classic because people resonated with it, but just in a different way than what they originally expected.” (23:18 | John Corella and Lindsley Allen)  “They really did build [Elizabeth] up so much that it was going to be huge and she ended up…I think for the business it's good for young dancers to know– and that's why I always teach–knowing the business and knowing the artistry and keeping them separate as much as you can, it's not easy but…Her agent dropped her, she was blamed for a lot of the movie's failure and that is just not fair.”  (25:47 | Lindsley Allen) “A lot has changed. Dancers who are listening—Lindsley and I, we walked so you could run. There's so much that has changed as far as how long you can dance, the surfaces you can dance on, the types of shoes, with the union— that's why unions are important for dancing—and again, using your voice.” (43:47 | John Corella)   Links Connect with Lindsley Allen: www.instagram.com/lindsleyallen 1nightonlyboomeffect.eventbrite.com   Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

"Thrust it! Thrust it!”Before the sequins and controversy hit the screen, Showgirls was a script that sparked excitement for its bold take on the glitz and grunge of Las Vegas life. Helmed by Paul Verhoeven and penned by Joe Eszterhas, the duo behind the provocative hit Basic Instinct, expectations were high for this journey into the world of Vegas showgirls. Yet, the resulting film would divide audiences and critics, becoming a cult classic for some and a cautionary tale of excess for others. The backdrop was set for a film that would be discussed and dissected for years to come. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards Worst Director Nominees series with a conversation about Showgirls. Here's a hint at what we talk about. In this deep dive, Pete and Andy explore the contentious legacy of Showgirls, a film that's danced its way into infamy. They discuss the film's place in the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards as a Worst Director Nominee, debating whether the film's over-the-top style was a misguided misstep or a misunderstood stroke of satirical genius. The hosts don't always see eye-to-eye, revealing a schism in their takes on the film's execution and its thematic intentions. They ponder whether Elizabeth Berkley's performance as Nomi was intentionally exaggerated to serve the film's satirical edge or if it was a misdirection that led to its critical panning. As part of their series on the Razzies, they delve into the broader conversation about what the nomination means for Showgirls and its place in cinematic history. Here are a few other points in our discussion. The Dickensian description of the film by some and the evolving public opinion over timeThe comparison of Verhoeven's direction in Showgirls to his work in RoboCop and other filmsThe potential allegory of Hollywood and selling out as interpreted by Jonathan RosenbaumThe contrasting performances, particularly Berkley's and Gina Gershon's, and their impact on the film's toneThe undercurrents of power and gender dynamics within the narrativeOur personal reactions to the comedic elements and whether they hit the mark or fell flatAs we peel back the layers of this high-kicking, high-stakes drama, we find a film that's as polarizing as it is fascinating. Despite its Razzie nods and the debates it sparks, Showgirls remains an electrifying topic of discussion for cinephiles and critics alike. "Thrust it! Thrust it!”Before the sequins and controversy hit the screen, Showgirls was a script that sparked excitement for its bold take on the glitz and grunge of Las Vegas life. Berkeley said the movie was so bad she became a "pariah" in Hollywood. But nearly 30 years after its release, "Showgirls" maintains a cult following with midnight showings at independent theaters and deep-dive essays exploring its themes by culture critics.Americans love their share of bad movies. "It's the 90s, plastic surgery is like good grooming." More prophetic words were never uttered on screen. We watched "The First Wives Club" (1996) with our friend Jack Fields and you'll have to excuse us while we spontaneously burst out into a rousing rendition of "You Don't Own Me" while wearing our finest ivory pants suits. We still don't know how we let this '90s classic slip passed us all this time, but now that we've seen it you can trust and believe we are full fledged members of the club. It took us a minute to reconcile the fact that we may or may not be closer in age to Dianne, Bette and Goldie's characters than we're comfortable admitting, but once we got passed that little tidbit we were fully enthralled.  Watching those three powerhouse comedic actresses let loose while sharing top billing is a sight we don't often get to see these days - and the rest of the cast is filled with MTMUG faves : Stockard Channing! Maggie Smith! SJP! Dan Hedaya! Elizabeth Berkley! Don't worry, we're adding this super quotable movie to our repertoire of daily non-sequitur film quotes! Then, it's HIS affair to die for since the husband is the one that has the affair in this wildly fantastically dumb movie that could have (legitimately) been written by 10-year-olds. But if you can get past the fact that the parents are the same age as their daughter, you'll be delighted by a villain that's giving serious Elizabeth Berkley caffeine pill vibes! You'll be so excited as you see an entire crime plan mapped out in front of a background actor doing some squats because all's well that ends well!  Facebook : alifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

The other of which is Purple Rain. Yes, we have yet another Prince fan in the house to discuss one of the biggest musical geniuses of our, or any, generation. We also discuss Peaches' “Spin The Bottle”, a drag-umentary send up of Madonna's “Truth or Dare” chronicling life behind the scenes at Midnight Movie Mass. Speaking of Madonna, Peaches analyzes current day Madonna, her “interesting” social media behavior, and whether she has “lost her way”. On the subject of train wrecks like Showgirls that we just cannot look away from, Peaches chats our favorite subject, Reality TV and all its glory. In other current event news, Peaches discusses, yes we are on an Elizabeth Berkley kick, the just released Saved By The Bell Reboot. Finally, we talk about other “so bad they are good” movies such as Grease 2 and Xanadu, to name a few. Tune in now as our two part sit down with the one and only Peaches Christ continues and comes to a conclusion. @thepeacheschrist @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: HIGHLAND TITLES - www.highlandtitles.com (Use Code VELVET for 15% Off Entire Site. It's Fall Verhoeven on Rogues Gallery! This is the magical time of year where we revisit the films of Paul Verhoeven. And WOW is this one a doozy. Showgirls was a critical and commercial failure when it was released in the fall of 1995, but the film found new life as a midnight movie and went on to become a cult favorite. So what's going on here? Is this so bad it's good? A misunderstood masterpiece? Or is it just as terrible as everyone seemed to think at the time? Let's find out. Topics include: how the success of Basic Instinct allowed Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas to run wild with this project, the controversy over the NC-17 rating, the two opposing character arcs the script seems like it's trying to give its main character, the way Elizabeth Berkley's performance was singled out by critics and why none of that is really her fault, how certain audiences have reclaimed the film, the straight-to-video sequel, and much more! There are some AWESOME Vegas movies out there.  Classics like "Casino", "Oceans Eleven" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".  There are also some TERRIBLE Vegas movies out there...like "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", "3000 Miles To Graceland" and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2". I think it's fair to say that the film we're discussing in this episode falls somewhere in the middle. Considered to be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, Showgirls (written by Joe Eszterhas, directed by Paul Veerhoven, and starring Elizabeth Berkley) has morphed into a huge cult classic. Thanks to a steady stream of nudity & gratuitous sex, the film was given an NC-17 rating and to this day, remains the only film with that rating to have had wide release in US movie theaters.  And although Showgirls wasn't based on a true story, Eszterhas and Veerhoven claimed they did "extensive interviews" with people in the Vegas entertainment community to make the portrayal of the showgirl world as accurate as possible. So, did they get it right?  We're about to find out. My guest for this episode, making her second appearance on the podcast, is Dani Elizabeth - a legit Showgirl and former cast member of the legendary Vegas shows, "Jubilee" and "Crazy Girls". Dani shared the story of the first time she saw Showgirls and how it almost led to a career change, we dove into the film with some character analysis & theories on why people watch the film over and over again, and we compared Dani's "showgirl life" to Nomi Malone's. If you want to dive further into the world of Showgirls - and really, who wouldn't? - check out the documentary You Don't Nomi directed by Jeffrey McHale (available for sale & rent on your favorite streaming service). __________________________________________________________________________ Become a Jeff Does Vegas Insider today for only $5 USD/month & enjoy all kinds of cool perks like early access to new episodes, commercial-free versions of EVERY episode, invites to exclusive live streams & videos, insider-only virtual hangouts and even real-life in-person hangouts IN Las Vegas! The Film Flamers: A Horror Movie Podcast

Showgirls is a 1995 erotic dram film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas, and stars Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle McLachlan, Gina Gershon and Gina Ravera. The film centers on a “street-smart” drifter who ventures to Las Vegas and climbs the seedy hierarchy from stripper to showgirl. The film was the second collaboration between Verhoeven and Eszterhas, after their success with Basic Instinct.  If you have anything to add to the discussion, please don't hesitate to do so by reaching out to us on social media @TheFilmFlamers, or call our hotline and leave us a message at 972-666-7733!         Out this Month: Week 1: Shooting the Flames Week 2: Hot Takes from the Overlook Film Festival Week 3: Basic Instinct Week 4: Showgirls  Patreon: Sliver     Coming in July 2022: Robocop Starship Troopers      Get in Touch:  Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheFilmFlamers  Visit our Store: https://teespring.com/stores/thefilmflamers Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheFilmFlamers/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheFilmFlamers NEW!
