People are crazy and times are strange...as Dave & Liam discuss Wonder Boys 25 in 2025 https://linktr.ee/watchitifyoucan
Twenty-five years ago, director Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) followed up his widely acclaimed crime drama classic LA Confidential with this quirky adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel of the same name. This tells the simple story of Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) who wrote ONE great novel several years and is having.....some difficulties....writing the follow-up. Beyond that, he has one headmaster's wife (Frances McDormand) who he's been having an affair with, a highly impressionable much younger student (Katie Holmes) who is enamored with him, a nebbishy editor/publisher (Robert Downey Jr.) who keeps hounding him for that next book, and.....a wayward student James Leer (Tobey Maguire) whom he gets mixed up with in some incident involving a dog that gets shot. James Leer also looks up to Grady and also just might be The Next Great American Writer. And there's more plot and several more characters to boot....plot is almost incidental as this Pittsburgh-set character comedy has more to it than plot. How about interesting characters, comical situations, and loads of fun dialogue to boot!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

JV and I sit down to discuss his Warminster Series and the art and craft of writing. ***Born of steel, fire, and black wind, J.V. Hilliard was raised as a highlander in the foothills of a once-great mountain chain on the confluence of the three mighty rivers that forged his realm's wealth and power for generations. His father, a peasant twerg, toiled away in industries of honest labor and instilled in him a work ethic that would shape his destiny. His mother, a local healer, cared for his elders and his warrior uncle, who helped to raise him during his formative years. His genius brother, whose wizardly prowess allowed him to master the art of the abacus and his own quill, trained with him for battles on fields of green and sheets of ice.Hilliard's earliest education took place in his warrior uncle's tower, where he learned his first words. His uncle helped him to learn the basics of life—and, most importantly, creative writing.Hilliard's training and education readied him to lift a quill that would scribe the tale of the realm of Warminster, filled with brave knights, harrowing adventure, and legendary struggles. He lives in the city of silver cups, hypocycloids, and golden triangles with his wife, a ranger of the diamond. They built their castle not far into the countryside, guarded by his own two horse hounds, Thor and MacLeod, and reside there to this day. I am an epic fantasy/dark fantasy writer and author of The Last Keeper and Vorodin's Lair, books one and two of the Warminster Saga (www.jvhilliard.com). Book three launches in July 2023 and the final book in the series launches in Q4 of 2023. The series is also being licensed to an AR/VR video game company to be made into one of the first “melded” reality games… allowing you to play on your computer, via phone, or with your headset. I am also exploring options to turn the Realm of Warminster into a graphic novel series, with a publisher TBD.Lastly, I am the owner of Altered Reality Magazine (alteredrealitymag.com) and help authors of speculative fiction and poetry find a portal to publication. ****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comThis episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/8AexEgOMriAFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comHave a question for our producer Rich Zei contact him at rich.zei@thirdearaudio.comIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast SuziTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©2024 Better To...Podcast with D. Our exit today has us trying to finish up our follow up novel that we have been working on for the past 7 years. This week, we are discussing Wonder Boys, written by Steve Kloves based on the book by Michael Chabon and directed by Curtis Hanson. It also happens to be one of Tripp's favorite movies of all time. Along the way, Tripp and Ross get to discuss Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey Jr., Gilmore Girls, 70s dad rock, lots of bizarre Spider-Man connections, and why people keep releasing Christmas movies in March. This week Sara and Kim talk about messy relationships and angsty boys in the 2000 film Wonder Boys and the book of the month, The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. What makes some cads loveable and others insufferable? Is it, as one of this week's characters worries, just about physical attraction after all? And what breed of dog is Robert Downey Jr? The First Part in our Stuck at School Trilogy High above the mucky-muck, castle made of clouds There sits Tobey boy sitting oh so proudly Not much to say when you're high above the mucky-muck. I'd like to continue the show notes in such a fashion but it would be disrespectful to Curtis Hanson's impressive followup to the all-time classic L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. To do so he needed more than just one Wonder Boy by casting a great ensemble that includes Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr, Rip Torn, Katie Holmes and Michael Douglas as one of the title characters in the Michael Chabon adaptation of WONDER BOYS. Oh, and also Tobey Maguire. Enjoy (as much as you can with Mr. Maguire present.) We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! The year is 2000 and Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler have swapped movie recommendations, resulting in wildly varying degrees of satisfaction. Jake asked Brad to watch Wonder Boys, Curtis Hanson's charming film about Michael Douglas getting a third (or perhaps fourth or fifth) chance at love (with Frances McDormand) if he can only get over his bad habits and help his misfit friends and students. Said circle of friends is played by Robert Downey Jr., Tobey Maguire, and Katie Holmes. They talk about the terrific cameos present, Douglas's rare turn as a nicer guy, and where this ranks in Downey and Maguire's filmographies. Brad then assigns Jake Bring It On, and Jake isn't happy about it. They discuss how Peyton Reed's movie fails when compared to other high school snapshots of the era, and how Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst don't "bring" the level of quality we've come to expect of them. Can you guess which scene Brad thinks belongs in Tommy Wiseau's the Room? Other movies discussed in this episode: The Last Detail (1973), Wall Street (1987), Clueless (1995), Election (1999), GAEA Girls (2000), Princes and Princesses (2000), Almost Famous (2000), Keeping the Faith (2000), Shadow of the Vampire (2000), High Fidelity (2000), The Contender (2000), Memento (2000), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), Best in Show (2000), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), You Can Count on Me (2000), Requiem for a Dream (2000), Castaway (2000), The Emperor's New Groove (2000), Traffic (2000), Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015), The Edge of Seventeen (2016), Eighth Grade (2018), Are You There God? This week, Hannah and Sam are just back from the New England Crime Bake, where crime-fiction authors gather, along with murder consultants and the like — don't miss people like Elly Griffiths, Deborah Crombie (the new one was "A Killing of Innocents"), and Chris Fabricant, who calls into question the way prosecutors use evidence in "Junk Science." Then we move into Hannah's love for "The Unmaking of June Farrow," by Adrienne Young, which has strong "Time Traveler's Wife" vibes, with time travel, romance, and mystery. Don't worry: It's not like "The Girl on the Train." Sam isn't quite as enamored with the new Paul Auster book, "Baumgartner," and is mildly troubled by the fact he's read three books this year, now, that feature 70-year-old men having sex. Sam says it's like "Wonder Boys" without any weed (Auster's book about a man whose sons and wife have died is "Book of Illusions," FYI). On the other hand, Hannah also loves "Down Here We Come Up," Sara Johnson Allen's debut novel, and not just because Sara lives in Ipswich. You can tell, in a good way, that Sara worked on the book for 15 years, a story of con artists and heart. Unfortunately, Sam follows with a couple books he just couldn't finish. Meh. Lessons learned. Not for him. Luckily, Hannah rescues the vibe with "Hotel Nantucket," her Elin Hilderbrand dive in preparation for our big event (it's not much like "Hotel New Hampshire," though), and Sam does like the new John Prine book (don't know who John Prine is? Ho boy, you're in luck). We're all over the map this week, folks, but next week we're doing a "gift-giving" thing, so stay tuned.
We're going back to the 1950s (well…the 1990s…) and we're going back to L.A. for the last time this season to discuss the Curtis Hanson masterpiece “L.A. Confidential”. Join Britt, Joey, and Adam as they discuss ensemble casts of the 1990s, variations from the James Ellroy novel (and what a s**t he is), and all things technical (the cinematography, production design, and score get some specific love). Also, this week Joey recommends “Transformers: Rise of the Beast” (currently on Paramount +), Adam recommends another Curtis Hanson film “Wonder Boys”(currently on Paramount + & Hoopla), and Britt recommends “Hard Boiled” (available to rent on Prime). We are back in 2023 with the first episode of the fourth season of Watch With Jen & it's a nice long, chatty, analytical one that's as surprisingly moving as it is filled with great Hollywood stories. RAVENOUS, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, & MATCHSTICK MEN screenwriter Ted Griffin (who also created FX's TERRIERS & produced THE WOLF OF WALL STREET) returns to the podcast to pay tribute to his old late mentor, the beloved yet still widely unsung writer-director Curtis Hanson.A man who began his career as a film critic, journalist, & photographer for "Cinema" magazine before he cut his teeth at Roger Corman's American International Pictures, Hanson went on to become a terrific director of crackerjack Hitchcockian thrillers before directing his masterpiece LA CONFIDENTIAL, & delving into more character-driven work like WONDER BOYS & IN HER SHOES.Focusing on the start of his career & rise to become a master of genre filmmaking, in this roughly ninety-minute conversation, we discuss the works THE SILENT PARTNER (adapted from a Danish crime novel by Hanson for director Daryl Duke), THE BEDROOM WINDOW, BAD INFLUENCE, THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE, & THE RIVER WILD.A heartfelt ode to Hanson - the man as well as the filmmaker - this was such a wonderful discussion & Ted Griffin went above & beyond in calling the director's old friends, family, & collaborators, including the incredible cinematographer Robert Elswit, in order to paint the most accurate portrait of Hanson. I'm so honored to be in a position to not only hear all of these stories but share them with all of you as well, & I know you'll enjoy our celebration of the life & career of the great Curtis Hanson.Originally Posted on Patreon (2/27/23) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/79288476Logo: KateGabrielle.comTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive
WHOA heading into fall like Hope you're feeling the fall mojo more than we are. Struggling here, which is a bummer because usually fall is the season that gives when it comes to forward momentum. We, a subset of three, can't tell if this is a mood that's overtaken us all, or if it's life stage specific when you have kids leaving the house, or if it's just that that the weird weather is taking its toll.A suggestion, if you too are grasping at momentum straws? Change it up. Have a ridiculous adventure. Sarina and I (KJ here as always) teamed up with another friend and some assorted partners and went… to the Hilton Garden Inn to hear their “house band”. Because when you tell me the Hilton Garden Inn has a house band, I say, bring it on. It fully lived up to the promise of the phrase. The band was a couple of talented guys, an enormous amp and a repertoire of songs ranging from originals to Thin Lizzie to… I don't know. It would probably have all been quite loud for my old ears, except that we were outside, overlooking the bus station, and the band was… in the parking lot.The waitress had bright red hair and a constantly changing wardrobe and strongly recommended the salmon.Everyone was trying very hard, no one seemed to know what we were trying hard for, and high levels of absurdity were reached.I know, not EVERYONE has a Hilton Garden Inn House Band. But perhaps there is something, somewhere to go where humanity transcends our urge to mock ourselves and just plays The Boys Are Back in Town in the parking lot for people eating chicken fingers and jalapeño poppers. Which were excellent.Links from the pod:Leuchtturm monthly B5 plannerSarah Stewart TaylorNanowrimo#AmReadingJess: Carrie Soto Is Back, Taylor Jenkins ReidThank You for Listening, Julia WhelanSarina: Girl, Forgotten, Karin SlaughterJess also mentioned Michael Connelly and Wonder Boys, Michael ChabonKJ: Also a Poet, Ada CalhounAlso mentioned, and Jess is now reading: The Last Chairlift, John Irving This is a public episode. Episode Number 113: PLEASANTVILLE (1998)This week, we take a look at the 1998 sci-fi comedy, PLEASANTVILLE, starring Toby Maguire (SPIDER-MAN, WONDER BOYS), Reese Witherspoon (ELECTION, LEGALLY BLOND), Jeff Daniels (THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, DUMB AND DUMBER), Joan Allen (NIXON, ROOM), and William H. Macy (FARGO, MAGNOLIA).Have you seen this late-90s film? Send us your thoughts to chrisandchristalkmovies@gmail.comWelcome to Chris & Chris Talk Movies. In this podcast, life-long friends Chris Ferry and Chris Huddleston discuss Sci Fi movies (sometimes the best Sci Fi movies, sometimes not), horror movies (occasionally some of the all time best horror movies…often…not), a few of the very best action movies (I think you see where we're going with this), and genre films from their childhood and beyond in this laid-back, rambling, but inviting series!Rated PG for occasional mature language and alcohol consumption.
This week Ryan and I watch Wonder Boys (2000), starring Michael Douglas as a professor struggling to write a follow-up to his successful first novel while juggling personal relationships with students and faculty and ingesting massive amounts of drugs and alcohol. The movie depicts a romantic vision of campus life that seems miles away from our respective experiences in 21st century academia, while still reflecting a lot of the things that drew us to academic life in the first place. Is longing for the world of Wonder Boys just another nostalgia trap? Subscribe to listen to the whole episode and gain access to our giant library of bonus content: patreon.com/nostalgiatrap
BEERS: We review beers from three brands that have connections to the pod: Narragansett, Sam Adams, and Braven. Will tries “Good Luck,” a collaboration between ‘Gansett and our friends at Sam Adams. It's a malt liquor that's aimed at honoring their shared history, and it lived up to expectations. Jake puts pen to paper and backs up the high praise he shared last week for Bushwick, given to us by our friend Brendan O'Donnell of Newport Craft. Could it truly be the perfect summer beer? BUSINESS: A pretty slow news week has us mulling over all kinds of topics. In Singapore, a brewery is experimenting with treating sewage water to make beer, becoming one of the first of its kind in the entire world. We debate if we would trust drinking beer if we knew where the water really came from. Also, in a shocking move, Robinhood announced it will lay off 23% of its employees…what's the motive for Vlad Tenev? BALLS (30:14): Sam Basel does it all; the King of A-10 Twitter, College Hoops guru, and Mets loyalist. Today he hops on with us to talk all things MLB with the trade deadline making waves this week. We discuss the Mets and their failure to make any noteworthy moves, and the Yankees making improvements in the outfield & the starting rotation. We each declare winners and losers: spoiler, they might not just be teams! We're proud to present Manscaped as our latest partner! What guy wouldn't want The Right Tools for The Job?! This month librarians Desirae, Sarah and Katie discuss the romantic thriller Verity, which follows a struggling writer who accepts an offer to finish a series by an injured bestselling author. If you like plot twists, this one's for you! Plus, we consider who should be cast in the main roles in a movie adaptation. Also mentioned: Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind by V.C. Andrews, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Linda Howard, Harlan Coben, the TV series The Fall, the movie Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar, Firestarter by Stephen King, Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon, Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell and the movie The Gift. "Messed up mentors" is this week's theme. "Wonder Boys" (2000) has its issues but was an undeserving box office flop. A lot going on but could actually have been longer if a couple characters had been fleshed out. We agree with one RT critic:"there's a lot to like in this fine mess of a film". Sean Connery plays a J.D. Salinger type in "Finding Forrester" (2000), a film about mentoring, without much of it. Worth a look, but not director Gus Van Sant's best work.Next 'on the lam' films with Steve McQueen in "The Getaway" (1972) and 'Midnight Special" (2016).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Welcome to the 11th edition of SportsTalk, AKA the first edition of SportsPod, because I'm an idiot and couldn't come up with that on my own. In the most "guys sitting around on a couch saying 'bro...we should start a podcast'" episode you'll ever hear, we discuss potential solutions for the Saudi Golf League for some reason, and also a bit about Tylor Megill and $/WAR theory (I assure you, we are not in favor). There's some basketball and bassoon talk mixed in as well. It's a full SportsTalk, coming at you right....now.
Ziv is back, everyone! He and Gage are taking the spotlight this week, with Cj joining in a (mostly) silent producer role! Hashish will put you in foreign prisons is the theme this week. "Midnight Express" (1978) is the story of an American college student attempting to smuggle 2 kilos of hash. He's caught and thrown into a horrible prison. Loosely based on a true story, it was great and star Brad Davis stole the show. "Return to Paradise" (1998) is based in Malaysia, but for some reason spent a lot of time in NYC. Not enough time at the prison and too much melodrama back home. A young Joaquin Phoenix gives a believable performance. Next, mentors in film with "Wonder Boys" (2000) and "Finding Forrester" (2000).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? This week's ‘Daddy Issues' guest marks two Tell Me About Your Father milestones: Our first non-human guest and our first guest over the age of 90. Claywoman, an ancient interstellar being from the Mirillion Galaxy, is, in fact, 500 million years old. Claywoman is the creation of actor and performance artist Michael Cavadias, whose credits include Girls, Difficult People, and Wonder Boys. Cavadias has amassed a cult following in New York City over the past decade for his live show and podcast, Conversations with Claywoman, in which this doyenne of all things primeval interviews friends of note including fellow actors John Cameron Mitchell, Bridget Everett, John Early, and Cole Escola. As you'll hear in this episode, Claywoman has been sitting on the shores of the primordial swamp and observing the evolution of humankind on Earth since Genesis. Her knowledge of what has been and what might be is immeasurable, especially when it comes to the patriarchy's greatest hits, including war, politics, and religion. As you'll hear, she not only confirms that Jesus was hot, but also shares with us that the founding fathers were “always coughing.” (Benjamin Franklin was fun, though.) We also discuss the concept of resenting people we're sexually attracted to, the confounding praise being heaped on the teen cannibalism drama Yellowjackets, the sibling rivalry between Jamie-Lynn Spears and Britney, the unrivaled job that death has been doing lately, Ted Cruz's daughter's public rebellion, and Sharon Stone's concerning history with komodo dragons. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

Michael Douglas stars as the ultimate one hit wonder who can't move on, even when his lover who is married to his boss (!) tells him that she is pregnant and that it may be time for them to become Facebook official.
