Episode 64 is here pals! It's a "Match of the Week" Edition of the show w/ my good pal, Richard of Video Plant - chattin' two rather 'special' matches in honor of two recently passed wrestlers who I'm quite fond of in Gran Hamada & Osamu Nishimura. It's Gran Hamada & Satoru 'Tiger Mask' Sayama vs Perro Aguayo & Baby Face from 1980, El Toreo, Mexico, then 'Mr. Muga', Osamu Nishimura vs. Yoshihiro Takayama from the 2002 New Japan G1 Climax tournament! Two highly contrasting yet absolutely wonderful Pro Wrestling matches if I do say so myself! We chat all about these matches, my art of said matches, our love for the world of Lucha Libre Mexicana, a dive into the world of the 'El Toreo' UWA promotion, Gran Hamada's legacy, the wonder of going down these wrestling rabbit-holes & the amazing atmosphere of this era of Lucha Libre, my love for Nishimura-San, Wrestling public access TV shows, Hijo Del Santo, Portland Wrestling, retro cult movie theatre appreciation & David Lynch! Looking back, we cover quite a bit of ground! In my 'World of Chris-Things' intro monologue I talk my recent Cyclone close call, my current solo art show coming to a close, & preparing for an upcoming Wrestling Club at the Scratch Bar.Everyone be sure to be following Richard's @Video.Plant for all of the coolest cult cinema & VHS collecting goodness.Enjoy!!Check out the Chris Things MOTW illustrations in question here: Gran Hamada & Satoru 'Tiger Mask' Sayama vs Perro Aguayo & Baby FaceOsamu Nishimura vs. Yoshihiro TakayamaChrisThings.com.au is the place for original art, prints, calendars & much more!Follow us on Instagram: @ChrisThings, @Video.Plant @SocialSuplexFollow us on Twitter: @ChrisThings, @SocialSuplexLike us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SocialSuplex/Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/QUaJfaCVisit our website for news, columns, and podcasts: https://socialsuplex.com/Join the Social Suplex community Facebook Group: The Wrestling (Squared) CircleWrestling-Art with Chris Things is the Pro-Wrestling Art niche Podcast of the Social Suplex Podcast Network. Portland Wrestling historian, Kerby Strom talks about his recently released VHS tape. Strom along with Ken Hamblin preserve some classic bouts from the Pacific Northwest. Old- School wrestling will not want to miss this episode! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Names like Lonnie Mayne, Buddy Rose and Dutch Savage may not be familiar to some today, but for fans of Portland’s professional wrestling scene of the 1960s to early '90s, these were some of the headliners that sold out the old Portland Sports Arena. As first reported in Slam Wrestling, two Portlanders have been working to preserve the history of the Pacific Northwest wrestling scene and making sure these names and more aren’t forgotten. Rich Patterson is one of these historians and a video wrestling archivist. Kerby Strom is a fellow historian of the scene as well as a collector of memorabilia. He also recently had recovered footage played at the Hollywood theater earlier this week. Strom and Patterson join us to share more on the history of the city’s wrestling scene and what they’ve found while collecting.
This week on STICK TO WRESTLING we discuss Portland Wrestling and we do a review of their year of 1984! We talk Roddy Piper, Billy Jack Haynes, Dynamite Kid, Don Owen, Raven / Scotty The Body, Brett Sawyer, Rip Oliver, Buddy Rose, Matt Borne, Tom Prichard, Jules Strongbow, Curt Hennig, Ed Wiskowski, Bobby Jaggers, Mike … Continue reading Episode 314: Let's Poison The Salad Bar! → The post Episode 314: Let's Poison The Salad Bar! appeared first on Stick To Wrestling with John McAdam.
In the 1970s and 1980s the pro wrestling industry was broken up into territories around the country. And each territory had its top star. In Florida, it was Dusty Rhodes; in Tennessee, it was Jerry Lawler; and in Texas, it was the Von Erichs. Then up in the Pacific Northwest there was Portland Wrestling. Their top star was a wrestler named Billy Jack Haynes. “He was the closest thing the Northwest had to a Von Erich,” said KPTV reporter Joe Vithayathil, who also has close ties to some alumni of the Portland Wrestling scene, including the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. “He was from here. He was a local hero.” Arguably, the peak of Haynes' career came in 1987 when he left the dying territorial system and wrestled for the global World Wrestling Federation (WWF). At WrestleMania III, Haynes wrestled Hercules Hernandez.
At one time in the 1980s Billy Jack Haynes was one of the biggest stars in the sport. He became an absolute legend in Portland and worked all over the country for every top promotion. By the time the 90s had hit Billy Jack had taken several steps down the ladder. He was wrestling sporadically for small promotions, he was working for drug runners, and he had lost his fortune that he made in the 80s. By the time the 2000s hit and shoot interviews were big, Billy Jack Haynes started saying very controversial things. He had several conspiracy stories and would often seem to ramble. Then in early 2024 tragedy struck as police in Oregon arrested Billy for the murder of his wife. We are going to bring in some people from the wrestling community to talk about what this tragedy means not only for Billy, but potentially for the whole sport. Join us as we look at the tragic fall from grace from one of wrestling's most well known stars.
Mid Atlantic Is Here! The time came. The time when I couldn't find much more Portland Wrestling from 1982. And so I thought. Not very hard. Why? Because Mid Atlantic Wrestling 1984 is here and lots of episodes! Ernie Ladd, Greg Valentine, Jimmy Valiant with no beard! It's great fun; hope you enjoy!
Frank Has Passed, But Portland Wrestling Continues And this Portland Wrestling Episode, from 10.9.1982, is a rather good one. A new army, Paul Ellering entering the territory, Vince McMahon making an appearance and an all-new commentary team, this has a rather exciting feel. And I'm loving it...
Some because they decide other promotions exist and they'd like to show us what they look like. Some because they have to when faced with sad news about longtime Portland wrestling commentator Frank Bonema. And yet, this is a blooming good show, but then Portland Wrestling, this time from 25th September 1982, always welcomes you in...
Portland Wrestling Has Me Hooked! It should be colder than a look from an ex-lover. But it's actually as warm as a sweet chilli poultice. Portland Wrestling from September 18th 1982 has no Buddy Rose, no Rocky Johnson or Dr D and yet it's just great. Maybe I'm getting addicted...
Portland don't. They even set a cage up and then take it down for the last match. With a wrestler unknown to Portland. What? Yep, frustrating, but that's Portland Wrestling on 21.8.1982...

Kris and David are joined by Daniel Makabe (@danielmakabe) for the first half of the show to discuss the week-plus that was February 15-22, 2003.We start off talking about the sudden end of the revival of Portland Wrestling and all the controversy surrounding the short lifespan of the promotion, which that means lots of insane Oregon State Athletic Commission talk.Next, we go to the indie scene where we talk about Dan's memories of western Canadian indies, the Philadelphia promotional wars of the era featuring 3PW and XPW, Cody Rhodes's high school wrestling career, Sting's evangelical wrestling parable with Nikita Koloff and Ted DiBiase, the insanity of J.C. Bailey, Tom Howard on “Joe Millionaire,” Joan Lunden reflecting on his disastrous time at the WCW Power Plant, Curt Hennig's memorial service, and much more. Then we go international, where we talk about the K-1 scandals and how they could (but didn't really) affect PRIDE FC, the bloom wearing off the AJPW rose a year into Keiji Muto's reign, Hiroshi Tanahashi making his NJPW return after being stabbed by his ex-girlfriend, the debut of U-STYLE, and tons more.We go to NWA-TNA next for a interesting week as they debut Jonah Adelman from Tough Enough in a crazy way, plus we have updates on their status with DirecTV and more.We then close with WWE, where we have Raw and SmackDown leading into the No Way Out PPV including Eric Bischoff vs. Jim Ross headlining Raw, Nathan Jones cutting his first promo on SmackDown, Eddy and Chavo Guerrero starting their lying, cheating, and stealing, one of John Cena's early raps, and a whole lot more. It's hard to believe that this stuff is 20 years old now, but here we are. We learned a lot the last time that Lewis joined us, but we barely scratched the surface of what he knows and has experienced. Join us as we continue our wrestling education with Lewis Rach.

Will be having a number of legends who wrestled in the Portland Territory share perspectives
Turnbuckle Turmoil is proud to pay tribute to the Don Owen's era of Portland Wrestling. With such a great history and lasting several decades it was a very fondly remembered territory. We'll be joined by a few of the people whom happened to ply their trade for Owen. Having helped launch the careers of such stars as Billy Jack Haynes, Roddy Piper, Buddy Rose, Jesse Ventura, Rick Martel, and Raven the promotion also had its fair share of entrenched locals that became local heroes such as Sandy Barr, Dutch Savage, and Bull Ramos. Make sure you join us for this very special tribute to a territory that fans talk about to this day.
Len Denton is a professional wrestler, best known by his ring name The Grappler. While wrestling in the Pacific Northwest his gimmick was a loaded boot, and later a loaded Mask, which he had started wearing after losing a hair match and being forced to shave his head. This also became part of his gimmick, as he continued to wear the mask even though it was obvious that his hair had grown back. In the 1980s, Jake "The Snake" Roberts put Denton in a front facelock. Denton had tripped, stepping on Jake's foot, causing Roberts to fall backwards and Denton to fall on his head. As a result, Roberts invented the professional wrestling move known as the DDT. We talk about all of this and so much more so do not miss a moment as Legends Month continues!!!
Matt Legit comes back to the program on a special day and time to discuss his latest project. He's working on a video to detail the rich history of Portland Wrestling called "Forefathers of Portland Wrestling." He wants to go back to the earliest days and rediscover some of the names that helped shape the sport in the PNW, but he needs your help. Matt has launched a kickstarter campaign so that he can come up with the funds to travel around the west coast and get the info he needs to make this project truly special. You'll find out how you can help and learn all about this great project. With names like Dave Meltzer and Roddy Piper already on board you know it's a worthwhile project. Sit back, relax, and learn all about this great project from the man himself.

He has a wealth of wrestling knowledge to share and we will pick his brain to get some of that knowledge shared.
