Steven Preisman is a Creative Director at Humanaut Brand Invention Agency, and this episode is about how to come up with a shit load of ideas fast. Steven is known in the ad world for delivering the Liquid Death Tony Hawk blood board stunt, where the pro skater dripped his blood onto a deck and sold it at auction. We also talked about Steven's criteria for what makes ideas spread, word association games, and why he rarely looks to advertising for inspiration. If you dig this episode and want more like it, check out these gems: #327 Charlie Hart, #317 - Scott Norton, #299 - Dersu Rhodes. And scope Steven's work here. He's very impressive… for a Canadian. Scott Norton and Mark Ramadan were only college students when they created Sir Kensington's, a $140-million-dollar condiment brand – with a backstory that's completely made up.These days, it seems like every brand – every start-up – is trying to tell a story about its authentic and humble beginnings. Scott and Mark went in the opposite direction when they had the idea to create a gourmet ketchup in 2008. They wanted to take on a juggernaut: Heinz. So, to stand out, they told a story about their ketchup that differentiated it from Heinz in every way. Sir Kensington was a fictional luminary of imperial Britain who invented his eponymous ketchup one night while dining with Catherine the Great. And the true story of how Scott and Mark grew and then sold the company to Unilever – it's a real yarn in its own right. This episode was produced by Alex Cheng, with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Andrea Bruce. Our engineers were Gilly Moon and Maggie Luthar. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.This episode is brought to you in part by Canva, the easy-to-use online design platform for presentations, social posts, videos, websites, and more. A skier on Mt. Hood had slid out and fallen into an open volcanic pit—the Devil's Kitchen Fumerole. With a broken femur and the toxic gasses of the volcano swirling in the air—the situation was dire. Many of the folks on Portland Mountain Rescue and the Hood River Crag Rats weren't sure that the patient would survive when they first got the call. But with their unique fumerole self-lowering rope system, PMR and the Crag Rats were able get the patient out of that alien world of ice and snow and toxic gasses. To dig into the details of the mission, we sat down with Cully Wiseman, a surgeon and the head medical lead on this mission, and Scott Norton, a rescue leader on the mission. Learn about their decision making process during rescues, the types of accidents they most often see, and what they wish climbers knew about SAR. *** Portland Mountain Rescue is a winner of this year's Rocky Talkie Search and Rescue Award. What does it take to build a brand that stands out as a Hero? How does the Hero's story inspire us and bring about positive impact in the world around us? Listen now as Ju Rhyu shares with Phillip some of her Hero's journey in building Hero Cosmetics!Standout Success{00:02:47} Ju knew that acne care is an emotional and sensitive area of the market, and she wanted the name of the product and of the brand to be positive and connect emotionally with consumers who needed the solution the product would provide{00:05:25} “When we started, even though we started on Amazon, I always knew this business would be an omnichannel business because when you have a pimple emergency, two day free shipping is great, but nothing sometimes is as good as being able to walk into a store and pick up a product that same day.” - Ju{00:06:00} Hero's first in-store launch went so well that it went nationwide pretty quickly, and then two years later was in Target where one SKU became a mulit-million dollar SKU within one year{00:11:00} “I definitely have the philosophy that I'll always do what's right for the business. And if I'm no longer the right person, then I will gladly step aside and make room for a real professional.” - Ju{00:13:34} “I'm constantly amazed at people who are at the highest levels of success or fame or however we hold them, when asked about who their heroes are, they pull out a Tom Rinks or a Scott Norton who has never been mentioned on Twitter, not once. I think that that's really interesting.” - PhillipAssociated Links: Learn more about Ju Rhyu and Hero CosmeticsCheck out other Future Commerce podcastsSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more of what we are witnessing in the commerce world!Have any questions or comments about the show? The year is 1999 and Kevin Nash is in charge of writing this episode of WCW Thunder! The Finger Poke of Doom just happened and The nWo has reformed as a super group called the nWo Elite. However, there is another group of nWo guys who are getting fed up with the way things are, the nWo B-Team. This group consisted of Stevie Ray, Horace Hogan, Vincent, Brian Adams, and Scott Norton! As we kick off WCW Thunder, the nWo B-Team is getting tired of waiting on the nWo Wolfpac Elite to arrive at the building so they send Horace Hogan out to the parking garage to wait for them to arrive. When the nWo limo arrives, it's anything but the nWo, it's actually the 4 Horsemen and they beat the crap out of Horace Hogan! Later that night the nWo B-Team challenged the 4 Horsemen to a 6 man tag match for the Main Event! As this is going on, Vincent changes his shirt from the nWo black and white to the red and black, causing chaos within the group. Also, Ric Flair is in charge of WCW as he recently shaved Eric Bischoff's head and we are building to Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan at WCW SuperBrawl IX for the WCW World Championship! Scott Norton (@swhnorton) is a venture capitalist and MUDWTR board member. He previously co-founded Sir Kensington's—the brand that's best known for making condiments with character. At Sir Kensington's, he raised over $20 million from investors, guiding the company to a successful acquisition by Unilever in 2017.Scott has been named one of Fast Company's “Most Creative People in Business” and listed on Forbes' “30 Under 30.” About a year ago, I gave Scott one of his first surfing lessons at Venice Beach. While on the wave he maintained a low, crouched position and kept his eyes straight ahead … just like I told him. Nice job, Scott.
