Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is an instructional picture book for kids called How to Pee Your Pants* (*the Right Way) by Rachel Michelle Wilson. It's cute and relatable (and Terri thinks it could have applications beyond the preschool crowd).Terri's random recommendation is back, and this week she has a simple way to reflect on the holiday season: The Pray More Advent retreat from Pray More Novenas. In the archives, we checked out an episode from 2020 on the joy of flying solo (otherwise known as alone time for mom).Next week's lineup: Lost S1 E23, "Exodus: Part 1," on Tuesday, December 10Shrinking S2 E6, "In a Lonely Place," on Wednesday, December 11Weekly roundup on Thursday, December 12Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Plus, discover how these significant figures can continue to shape a child's life, possibly stepping into the role of confirmation sponsors as they grow.Reflecting on the legacy of Pope John Paul II on his feast day, we recount our personal experiences of his awe-inspiring visits to the United States. From the unforgettable masses at Yankee and Shea Stadium in New York to the echoes of his "do not be afraid" messages during World Youth Days, JPII's message continues to ignite faith and courage. Amidst these reflections, we share news about Deacon Mike's appointment as the Bishop's Delegate for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relationships and discuss exciting projects like the Catholic-Jewish Colloquium that are on the horizon.Church Search goes to New Hampshire where we share the story of a church who are praying for our country for 30 days before the election. (It can be a picture, but I have to add a description about why it is inspiring.)6. Eat only food that I have prepared. (I can eat out, but not randomly. I have to plan to eat out ahead of time and have to pick something off a menu ahead of time that fits with my current diet plan).Readings this week are from the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the story of Bartimaeus calls us to examine our own faith and vision. In today’s episode of Naked Talk with Jess, we are joined by John-Paul Deddens and Kevin Grillot from WeDignify. The group discusses how WeDignify started in a dorm room and became a widespread movement, and how WeDignify has transformed individuals on college campuses to become future pro-life leaders. Jess touches on how this movement holds a special place in her heart, as she is someone who has struggled with a pro-life decision in her younger years. John-Paul and Kevin also talk about creating a program to teach people to talk about sensitive tops and create a safe place on college campuses for those dealing with difficult decisions regarding abortion. Tune in TODAY for our candid conversation. Guest Bio: John-Paul is a graduate of the University of Illinois in Engineering. In college he witnessed a fellow student struggling and felt that he needed to do something to help. In his small dorm room, John-Paul created WeDignify, a pro-life organization that equips, educates, and empowers students to lead pro-life groups on campus and beyond. John-Paul has also created the “March for Life – Chicago” to promote their message and encourage people to support their cause. John Paul is married to his wife Annie and together they have created Pray More Novenas.Kevin Grillot was the President of Students for Life at Saint Louis University, he announced the student group’s intention to create an endowment, so no person has to choose between having a child and having an education. One year later, with the involvement of many, the students established the endowment. Now, the Pregnant and Parenting Student Assistance has dispersed $60,000 in aid and continues at a rate of over $10,000 per year.Kevin’s strong leadership is paired with advanced pro-life knowledge. Selected to participate in the inaugural year of the Vita Institute at the University of Notre Dame, Kevin learned from leaders in the fields of embryology, law, and more.In 2011, John-Paul hired Kevin as WeDignify’s first Campus Mentor. As the “Guinea pig” of a new initiative, Kevin was given a vague job description, 2 days of training, and then sent to a brand-new place: Chicago. In 2013, Kevin married Becca. Kevin and Becca now have 3 children, Thomas, Luke, and Grace. A proud husband and father, Kevin’s family brings him more joy in life than he ever dreamed. Also in 2013, Kevin was promoted to Executive Director of weDignify. Happy Advent! Are you feeling too busy and overwhelmed? Here’s help! This week, I am sharing some easy Advent ideas that are practical and do-able for even the busiest of moms. Paper Chain of Prayer Make a paper chain with a link for each day until Christmas. Write a different prayer intention or fun activity on each link and then every day take off a link, read it, and pray for that intention or do that fun activity. It’s so simple! You can do this. *Use Scripture * You might consider reading from the Bible each day, perhaps a few lines from Luke or Isaiah that are Advent or Christmas-themed. Or, memorize a passage of Scripture with your kids as a way of making God’s word about Jesus’ coming part of your heart and mind every day. Make a treat to save Advent is a time of watching, waiting, and preparing for Jesus. One fun way to underscore this idea in your family is to make a Christmas treat, like candy or cookies, and freeze it to enjoy at Christmas. I mentioned my recipe for cream cheese mints as a fun and easy one to try with kids, and you can find that here. Celebrate feast days! There are so many feasts in the season of Advent. Pick one and celebrate with a special treat or activity on that day. St. Nicholas Dec 6 Juan Diego Dec 9 Guadalupe Dec 12 St. Lucy Dec 13 Also, consider reading the O Antiphons during the last 7 days before Christmas. ** Make snowflakes!** Follow this easy list of instructions to make gorgeous paper snowflakes to decorate your home or just have some fun with your kids. No crafting expertise necessary! Pray a Christmas Novena There is the St. Andrew Christmas Novena that lasts through all of Advent, but you might also just pray the simpler, shorter Christmas Novena with Pray More Novenas this year. Play Advent music You might already be listening to Christmas music, but consider adding some Advent music to your days as well. Here is an Advent playlist on Spotify that I enjoy. Do you have one you like? Send it to me! ** Go to something at your parish** Whether it be a Reconciliation service, choir concert, craft fair, or nativity play, consider participating in something as part of your parish life this Advent season. This week I also answer a question from listener Nina who is exhausted from long bouts of illness with her 3 young children. Have feedback or an idea to share? I would love to hear from you! I recently recorded an audio version of my newest book, You Are Enough: What Women of the Bible Teach You About Your Mission and Worth. More to come! "It’s easy to be hyper-focused on the intention, and to be less focused on what God may want in our life. So we need to make that the right priority in our prayers." How often have you asked "God, just show me what you want me to do and I'll do it?" Or said, "God, WHY WON'T YOU SHOW ME?" I know I said that to God daily during my discernment of religious life. Today's guest, Annie Deddens, is the founder of Pray More Novenas, a website dedicated to helping Catholics finish their 9 day prayers for specific intentions. We talk about how a novena CAN be used and how it SHOULDN'T be used, Annie's stories of hearing from half a million people around the world who are praying together, and some bonus advice for Catholic entrepreneurs on starting something new. Enjoy! Topics Discussed What is a novena and what is it for? Fitting novenas into the bigger picture of discernment: it's not always about the answer How Annie and John-Paul started Pray More Novenas together When should you start something you feel called to? Hey Friends! Before we dive into this week's topic, two quick announcements! One: We will NOT be releasing a new episode next weekend. We're taking a week off for Thanksgiving. BUT (two), we will be back the First Sunday of ADVENT with the first episode of our book study series! The book we're reading is Interior Freedom by Fr. Jacques Philippe. You can snag it right here! This week, we're discussing another one of those Special Catholic Things: Novenas. What is a novena? Where do we get the tradition? Do I have to start a novena on a particular day (like do the dates matter)? The root of the word "novena' is Latin for nine. The original novena was prayed by the apostles and Our Blessed Mother as they waited for the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. From there, novenas have been composed to many of our Saints and for many of our Feast Days (Christ the King, for example). Usually, a novena is prayed leading up to the Saint's feast day so that the ninth day of the novena is either the eve of or the actual feast day, but you can begin a novena whenever you'd like! Pray More Novenas is our favorite go-to for all things novenas and they have a great FAQ page that you can check out and learn even more about our Church's awesome form of prayer. They also offer a FREE novena reminder service via your email. The prayers of whatever novena is currently "going on" will be sent to your email as a daily reminder. It is So Cool. One thing that is important to remember about novenas... it can be tempting to believe that God can't possibly respond 'No' or 'Not right Now' to your novena prayers, but the fact is, He often does. A novena isn't a magic formula for a 'Yes' and we are powerless to make demands or attempt to control God. Sometimes, prayers are answered in a way that is not immediately apparent or more subtle than what we were expecting. It could be a change of heart, renewed energy, or inspiration to pursue something different. In this episode, we both share an intention that is near and dear to our hearts right now. We also ask that you share your intentions with us. It would be an honor to carry your intentions to our Lady and our Lord. Just email Nancy at nancy@dosmallthingswithlove.com and she will pass everything onto Katie so we can both be praying for YOU. Well HELLO there! I feel like it's been awhile, though it's not like I've been away from the blog for any length of time. :0 But Tea Time is back in it's seasonal format, and here we are at episode 1 for Advent 2015!*streamers*Today we talk about the format for Tea Time going forward and the seasonal way it will be produced for the foreseeable future (lots of catching up and what's happening, a Catholic tidbit, and then seasonal specials), before moving into our Advent Book Club! Horray! There will be a new Tea Time each week for the next 4 weeks.CAVEAT: The audio quality this week is very poor, I'm so sorry about that! Being out of practice, I did not properly record the audio while I recorded live, and thus had to go back and capture it from the video, which leads to ca ca in terms of audio. It's something at least for those of you who prefer to listen rather than watch the video. There are also a couple of wonky spots where I had to edit out notification noises that I did not anticipate. *collapses* Next week, I will be back in the groove, I promise! **To subscribe to the audio version of Tea Time with Tiffany, just search for it in iTunes or use this link to subscribe via Feedburner in your podcatcher of choice. The holidays are such hard time of year for anyone who wants to stay healthy, eat well, and exercise on a regular basis. The change in routine plus the abundance of "unhealthy" options of eating add up to a difficult challenge for most of us. But I am here to help, with some simple ideas for ways that can help you stay on track (at least a little) during this busy, indulgent time of year. In this week's show, I share thoughts about the following: 1) It’s not all or nothing. You can say no sometimes. 2) Eat a salad a day. One easy way to balance your eating during the season. 3) Work out in the morning. Get it done! 4) Plan ahead to have healthy options at the ready. Have single-portion healthy options for meals and snacks ready to go. 5) Go on a winter walk. A great way to connect with family and friends! 6) Drink your water. Water is a necessity, especially during this dry season. We also talked about the Advent Prayer Retreat offered by Pray More Novenas. Go here to find out more about it and join me in prayer this month!
