Good morning! On today’s show, Matt Swaim and Anna Mitchell continue their discussion of the O Antiphons by looking at Jesus as the Root of Jesse. Guests include pastoral counselor Kevin Prendergast to look at how winter weather can affect moods, and Rita Heikenfeld with tips from the kitchen for Christmas. Plus news, weather, sports and more… ***** O Radix Jesse O come, O Branch of Jesse’s stem, unto your own and rescue them! From depths of hell your people save, and give them victory o’er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuelshall come to you, O Israel. ***** RITA HEIKENFELD’S FOOLPROOF SIRLOIN TIP ROAST A very unusual way of roasting beef! A vintage recipe that’s very trendy. Roasted carrots with red onions, lemon zest and mint would be a lovely side. Yield: Serves 6-8 Ingredients 3 pounds sirloin tip roast, tied Herb “crust” 1-1/2 teaspoons each: salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons each: dried oregano and dried basil 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper or more to taste 3 cloves garlic, minced — a good tablespoon or more Palmful fresh parsley, minced – optional Enough olive oil or softened butter to bring it all together To pour around roast Beef broth or red wine (a generous cup or so) Instructions Take the roast out of the refrigerator 1-1/2 hours before roasting, but leave it wrapped. This allows it to come to room temperature without drying out, resulting in a very juicy roast. Unwrap and pat dry. Mix together ingredients for herb “crust”. Preheat oven to 250. (No, that’s not a mistake!). While oven is preheating, film the bottom of an oven proof, heavy pan with olive oil. Heat on medium high until the oil just starts beginning to smoke. Put the roast in the pan, turning to sear to a nice brown on all sides. Rub the roast evenly with the herb “crust”. Put back in pan and pour broth or wine around it. Roast for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until it reaches 130 degrees. Turn off the oven and leave the roast inside and don’t open the door. .After 30-40 minutes, check the temperature. It should read 140-145 for medium. Remove from oven and let rest, tented, 10-15 minutes. Remove ties before slicing with sharp knife into thin slices. Drizzle with accumulated juices. TIPS Make sure you get a roast labeled “choice” which has more fat running through it for flavor and tenderness. One that’s marked “select” will be too lean for this recipe. Having the roast tied allows for more even roasting. What’s the best wine for beef? My go-to wine is Pinot Noir, lovely for drinking alongside, as well.Any good quality burgundy works well with this recipe. ***** Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Reflections by Dom Prosper Gueranger, O.S.B.
On Christmas Eve in 1918, Eric Milner-White, Dean of King's College, Cambridge, offered a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols to the city of Cambridge. The service has since become a worldwide holiday tradition. The success of the Christmas Eve service prompted Milner-White to craft a service of Advent Lessons and Carols for the first Sunday of Advent in 1934. Our own service is adapted from this form, and it calls to mind through word and song the joyful expectation of Advent. The Lessons and Carols service was for many years a staple at Church of the Redeemer, and we hope, as we return to this beautiful service, that it will become once again an annual tradition for our entire parish and for the city of Cincinnati. Listen in during the week before Christmas and meditate on a series of carols, hymns, readings, and the seven great "O" Antiphons, one of the great Medieval inheritances of the Church. O come, Emmanuel!

The O Antiphons - Emmanuel We continue looking at the 7 O Antiphons used by some parts of the church in their Christmas worship. Each of them addresses Jesus Christ using a Messianic title drawn from Old Testament prophecy. Today Is Day 7 - O Emmanuel God with us, our King and Law-giver, desired of the nations and their salvation, you came to save us, Lord our God. Old Testament reading: Isaiah 7:13-14 - Isaiah said, “Listen well, you royal family of David! Isn't it enough to exhaust human patience? Must you exhaust the patience of my God as well? All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us'). New Testament Readings: Matthew 1:23 - ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel' (which means ‘God with us'). John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Acts 4:11-12 - Jesus is ‘“the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.” Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.' The O Antiphons - Rex Gentium We continue looking at the 7 O Antiphons used by some parts of the church in their Christmas worship. Each of them addresses Jesus Christ using a Messianic title drawn from Old Testament prophecy. Today is day 6 - Rex Gentium King of the Nations for whom they long, the corner-stone who makes of both one, you came and delivered humanity whom you made from clay. Old Testament readings: Genesis 2:7 - Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Isaiah 2:4 - He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war any more. Isaiah 9:7 - Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. Isaiah 28:16 - Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken. Haggai 2:8-9 - “The silver is mine and the gold is mine,” declares the LORD Almighty. “The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,” says the LORD Almighty. “And in this place I will grant peace,” declares the LORD Almighty.' New Testament reading: Ephesians 2:14-16 - For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. The O Antiphons - Oriens We continue looking at the 7 O Antiphons used by some parts of the church in their Christmas worship. Each of them addresses Jesus Christ using a Messianic title drawn from Old Testament prophecy. Today is day 5 - Oriens Morning Star, splendour of eternal light and sun of justice, you came and illumined those seated in darkness and the shadow of death. Old Testament readings are: Isaiah 9:2 – The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Zechariah 6:12-13 - Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.” Malachi 4:2 “But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. New Testament readings are: Luke 1:8-10 - Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshippers were praying outside. John 8:12 - When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.' Hebrews 1:3 - The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Right Mouse click or tap here to save this as an audio mp3 file

Prelude begins at 0:00. Service begins at 20:40.This Advent Procession with Lessons and Carols is organized around the O Antiphons – beautiful plainchant texts which invoke the Messiah to return, sung since the 8th century at Vespers on the seven evenings leading up to Christmas. The choir gradually moves into the chancel, stopping at various stations around the Cathedral nave. Each of the biblical prophecies is expanded upon by the singing of carols, anthems, and hymns which anticipate the coming of Christ, culminating in a glorious setting of the Magnificat (The Song of Mary, Luke 1:46-55) and the singing of “O come, O come, Emmanuel,” the text of which is an English translation of the very O Antiphons that the choir has sung throughout the service. The officiant is the Very Rev. Sam Candler. Choral repertoire includes:The Great O AntiphonsJudith Weir (b. 1954), Drop down, ye heavens, from above“Lo, he comes with clouds descending” HelmsleyBoris Ord (1897-1961), Adam lay ybounden“Redeemer of the nations, come” Veni Redemptor gentiumPaul Manz (1919-2009), E'en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come“Come, thou Redeemer of the earth” Puer nobisHerbert Howells (1892-1983), A Spotless Rose“Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming” Es ist ein Ros entsprungenClaude Goudimel (c. 1520-1572), Comfort, comfort ye my people“The great forerunner of the morn” The Truth from aboveMelissa Dunphy (b. 1980), O Oriens“The angel Gabriel from heaven came” Gabriel's MessageJavier Busto (b. 1949), Ave MariaHerbert Howells (1892-1983), Magnificat (Gloucester Cathedral)Elizabeth Poston (1905-1987), Jesus Christ the apple tree“O come, O come, Emmanuel” Veni, veni Emmanuel

This blogcast explores “Embracing Advent" written by Helena Romano and read by Amy CardinIn this blog post, Helena shares how the Advent season stands apart from Christmas and helps prepare our hearts and souls for the coming of Christ and this period of preparation can even lend itself to a more exciting Christmas. When we experience Advent in this way, the anticipation for Christmas builds with each passing week. As Christmas Day draws closer, we start baking and freezing the Christmas cookies to be eaten during Christmastide and to be given as gifts at Christmas parties. I take time to plan out special activities for us to do during the twelve days of Christmas, or special meals I know everyone will enjoy during that time. We pray the O Antiphons. We make or buy gifts for our loved ones, and we talk about how giving gifts to our loved ones is a reflection of the great gift of Jesus, who was given to us on Christmas Day. In this way, when we finally decorate the house on Christmas Eve, we are all practically bouncing with excitement—and not just about presents, but about the miracle of Christ's birth. Our children's—and our own—sense of wonder is bolstered and preserved by our not celebrating too early. By steeping ourselves in the history of the first Christmas and by maintaining that same sense of watchful hoping and waiting, we can more fully appreciate the wonder of the arrival of the promised Messiah.
