COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) impacts the breathing of nearly 16 million Americans, according to the NIH. And many more have the disease without even knowing it. “As those elastic fibers [in the lungs] tend to be destroyed over time, you lose that ability to have that air come out,” says pulmonologist Dr. Roger Seheult, outlining how COPD restricts breathing. Pulmonologists treat diseases of the respiratory system, including the lungs and the airways. “Anything that you breathe in that tends to damage those elastic fibers is going to cause your lungs not to deflate, not to come back to a regular size,” he adds, listing pollutants such as cigarette smoke that can cause the disease. How is COPD detected? Under what conditions can cooking lead to COPD? What effects can vaping and smoking marijuana have on the lungs and breathing? Dr. Seheult returns to Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to explain why COPD is the world's third leading cause of death, and to highlight the respiratory dangers now facing young people in particular. “I was actually seeing … teenage kids from local high schools ending up in my intensive care unit on ventilators because they were vaping these oils that were never really designed to be vaped.” Dr. Seheult is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California. Alongside pulmonology, he is also board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Mucus plugging contributes to airway obstruction and death in acute asthma and is increasingly being recognized as a significant contributory factor to persistent, severe asthma. Pulmonologists, allergy and immunology specialists, and other healthcare professionals need to be aware of these latest insights into the pathophysiology of severe asthma to optimally care for their patients. Through a collection of short, focused educational modules, this PeerView activity allows learners to combine self-assessment with concise clinical content in an interactive format. Dr. Monica Tang will show learners how to identify the presence of airway mucus plugging on HRCT, and she will review the latest evidence with regard to mucus plugging treatment. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Explain the role of mucus plugging as a contributory factor to airway obstruction and symptoms in severe asthma and its implications for treatment; Identify the presence of airway mucus plugging on HRCT according to current expert recommendations; and Apply recent insights into the role of mucus plugging, as well as the latest clinical evidence, to the selection of treatment for patients with severe asthma

Pulmonologists have noted an exciting “baby boom” among women with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in the last several years. As Gretchen Winter, MD, explains, CFTR modulators have led to increased fertility and the prospect of family planning for those with CF. She discusses the unique concerns those with CF may have when making reproductive decisions, such as effective contraception; safety of CFTR modulator use during both pregnancy and breastfeeding; and the risk of passing on the genetic disease. She also presents the different pathways to parenthood available for women and men with CF.

The Boy Who Never Gave Up by Emmanuel Taban In 1994, 16-year-old Emmanuel Taban walked out of war-torn Sudan with nothing and nowhere to go after he had been tortured at the hands of government forces, who falsely accused him of spying for the rebels. When he finally managed to escape, he literally took a wrong turn and, instead of being reunited with his family, ended up in neighbouring Eritrea as a refugee. Over the months that followed, young Emmanuel went on a harrowing journey, often spending weeks on the streets and facing many dangers. Relying on the generosity of strangers, he made the long journey south to South Africa, via Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, travelling mostly by bus and on foot. When he reached Johannesburg, 18 months after fleeing Sudan, he was determined to resume his education. He managed to complete his schooling with the help of Catholic missionaries and entered medical school, qualifying as a doctor, and eventually specialising in pulmonology. Emmanuel's skill and dedication as a physician, and his stubborn refusal to be discouraged by setbacks, led to an important discovery in the treatment of hypoxaemic COVID-19 patients. By never giving up, this son of Sudan has risen above extreme poverty, racism and xenophobia to become a South African legend. This is his story....Dr Emmanuel Taban See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/ILmDKzEneYE More than 63% of CoVid patients surviving an ICU stay were diagnosed with sleep apnea. Pulmonologists at the All India Institute of Medical Science report their analysis of 103 CoVid patients. Of that number, 67 underwent a formal sleep study. Of those studied, 65 or 97% met the criteria for clinically-significant sleep apnea. Even more worrisome: 49/67 or 73% had moderate to severe sleep apnea. Those discharged from the ICU after a CoVid bout require long-term followup to assess any multi-organ damage including that to their lungs. Included in their assessment should be screening for possible sleep apnea. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.05.04.21256593v1.full.pdf+html #CoVid #apnea #icu
