In the world of music, The Rajahs are not a household name, however, they've had some extraordinary moments in their career.   Before they renamed themselves The Rajahs, the band were previously known as The R'Jays and they were one of the most popular acts in Australia. As Dig Richards and the R'Jays, they spread the gospel of rock n roll across the country and their success was only rivalled by the likes of Johnny O'Keefe and Col Joye.   Here's Drummer Leon Isaccson telling us about how the band became the first Australian band to tour Vietnam during the war, performing for the Australian and American troops.

The first half of 1964 rounds out with very few Australian releases high in the charts. In fact, the highest-charting 45 is from New Zealand's Bill & Boyd; the beginning of a very successful recording career in Australia. Rock 'n' Roll revival is certainly a theme with entries from Johnny Devlin, Merv Benton, Johnny Chester, and Johnny O'Keefe with "Shout Parts 1 & 2", a revival of his 1959 hit, this time with the backing of "Australia's Beatles", The Rajahs! And a chart entry from another under-recorded female singer, April Byron who was soon to come under the patronage of The Bee Gees. Enjoy the sounds of mid-1964.

The Beatles to Bee Gees - Leon's Story Part 3 Long before social media, The Rajahs fame blew up literally overnight. If there was a Twitter in the 1960's #THERAJAHS would have been sure to be trending in the 'twitter-verse'. The Rajahs had already achieved plenty of success as Dig Richards and the R'Jays, however, when Dig went solo, they changed their name from to The Rajahs and it was the start of an amazing musical journey. Via a 'throw-away' recording session, The Rajahs became known as the "Australian Beatles" and "filled in" for the Fab Four, giving Aussie teenagers their fix of Beatlemania before the real thing arrived on our shores. As the resident recording band with the famed Festival Records, The Rajahs have probably appeared on more singles and albums than just about any other Australian band, such was their recording output. They also had the prestigious job as Johnny O'Keefes backing band for several years. The Rajahs were the first Australian band to headed to the Vietnam War and perform for the troops. For New Years Eve in 1966, The Rajahs even replaced Bob Hope to perform for 5000 troops aboard the American battleship, the US Kittyhawk. I speak with The Rajahs drummer Leon Isackson about his 60 year career in the world of Rock 'n' Roll.

In the early days of Rock 'n' Roll in Australia, Dig Richards & the R'Jays were one of the biggest bands in the land. With movie-star good looks, Dig was Australia's very first teenage idol, and with his band the R'Jays, they were at the forefront of the Rock 'n' Roll revolution. They were the first Aussie band to release a full length album through Festival Records and as a live act, they were as popular as any local band. They also appeared on many Lee Gordon Big Shows and more than held their own playing alongside the visiting American superstars. At a time when the "establishment" was doing it best to stop this new form of music from taking hold, Dig Richards & the R'Jays led the way in spreading the gospel of Rock 'n' Roll. They even had their own TV show on Channel 7 called Teen Time.I speak with R'Jays drummer Leon Isaacson about his amazing musical journey hanging out with the like of The Bee Gees and Louis Armstrong and I also spoke with Dig's brother, Doug and gained some insight into Digs career. Sadly, Dig died aged just 42-years-old in 1983 , however, his musical legacy lives on. This is the first of 4 episodes featuring Leon Isaacson, each episode stands alone but is linked via it's musical timeline. As Australia's very first teenage idol, Dig Richards was the pretty boy of Rock n Roll, often compared in looks to actor James Dean, he was a serious musician who realised there wasn't much of a future in being a 'teenager pop star pin up'. Fort Kochi or Cochin is an extrordinary place to visit in South India. Ruled by the Portuguese, the Dutch, and British and of coarse Rajahs it is a wonderful mix of architecture, history, and a harmony of local people and various cultures that is unique in India. As local resident experts have explained to me the most rewarding part of a visit to Fort Cochin is not necessarily the sights you’ll see. It’s more about the appreciation of the local culture and people and the relaxed feeling you will easily pick up on right away. It’s one of my favorite destinations in India. On my last visit I spent time broadcasting from a number of locations around the Fort Cochin area relaying my thoughts and impressions of the region and answering questions from viewers on Periscope about travel to Kerala and general travel related questions and subjects on Asia. Born in Baghdad, raised in New Delhi, and now expanding further around the world spreading his message of cross-cultural understanding through the common denominator of music - Mohammed Abood a.k.a. DJ MoCity is a music entrepreneur that's been hustling his way around Asia and beyond for the past decade. With roots firmly based in hip-hop, he has entertained crowds and organised events all over the India whilst also being the creative force behind “Dubstation” at Bacardi NH7 Weekender. A stage that has tirelessly promoted genres such as dub, reggae, hip-hop, glitch-hop, dubstep and drum and bass – all on a large mainstream platform. Don't forget the Rajahs either. The last five years have seen DJ MoCity, Diggy Dang and Mr Herbalist, turn their infectious passion for reggae music into a national sensation as Reggae Rajahs. Their enthusiasm and determination has seen them create strong international bonds placing India firmly on the tight-knit reggae map whilst consciously sharing their achievements with a very real and dedicated fan base. Five years has even seen the clan grow from three into five with new recruits Ziggy B and BeLights. As a solo figure, DJ MoCity is evidently a forward thinking DJ. Moving through a whopping 70 tracks in just over 100 minutes, the session on hand is rife with pulsing rhythms, R&B grooves, and washy synths yet with the music never feeling hurried. We suspect MoCity's current favorites feature heavily in proceedings, with a few selections also coming from local producers based in both India and Pakistan. On a technical level, the transitions are generally pretty short, with one track subtly and quickly fading into the next. And while the mix has its bumper moments, the overall pace is beat heavy and groove consistent. It's not hard to figure that MoCity clearly knows where the dancefloor is located, yet at this point he's just showing off his impressive beat catalogue, and we're happily tagging along for the ride. Reggae Rajahs are India's first and foremost reggae sound system. That much you should know. For the past 4 years they have been steadily building a loyal and dedicated fanbase across the country, exclusively pushing genres such as reggae, dancehall, dub, ska and rocksteady. This week they will be celebrating 4 years with a self programmed, curated and promoted tour in association with The Polish Institute. As has become a tradition over the years, they will also be celebrating Bob Marley's (68th) birthday within these dates: Last year saw the trio complete a landmark year. Alongside a European tour they had performances at festivals such as SulaFest, NH7 Weekender, Ragasthan and Sunburn, whilst also supporting Snoop Dogg in Delhi to much acclaim from press and fans alike. It's been an absolute pleasure watching this dynamic trio grow over the years. From winning the very first reggae soundclash in a 200 capacity club (up against BASSFoundation) to hosting Dub Station at the NH7 Weekender, playing Outlook Festival in Croatia and supporting Snoop Dogg in New Delhi, their positive lyrics, MC'ing style, role as selectors and choice of touring artists has reflected in their progression as one of India's fastest growing live acts. Supporting them on this tour will be Dreadsquad, who rank amongst Poland's premier music producers. Creating music that can broadly be classified as reggae/dancehall, they combine elements of ska, rocksteady, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep, pushing forward a unique fusion of bass heavy sounds. And as a little treat the Rajahs have put together a mix that elegantly folds together 24 tracks all produced by Dreadsquad, all within 34 minutes.
