The past few years have seen a huge increase in the number of artistic projects, from theatre and film to comedy, that explicitly address mental health. Often these projects involve the artists sharing their own traumatic experiences. In our second Mental Health Arts Network gathering, recorded in March 2022, we explore how we use the arts to explore mental health while safeguarding the mental health of artists and audiences. Our speakers are: Tamsin Griffiths and Paul Whittaker of Four in Four. Based in Cardiff, Tamsin and Paul are cross-disciplinary artists with a Mental Health diagnosis, who create participatory interactive projects that blur the boundaries of art-forms and challenge perceptions about mental health. Juliette Burton (pictured) is a comedian who has talked openly about her mental health experiences in her shows. She is an ambassador for the mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness, and has worked closely with Mind, Beat and Time To Change. Rebecca Day is a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and founder of Film in Mind, which advocates for better mental health in the film industry and provides bespoke therapeutic services for the filmmaking community. Vikki Doig recently moved on from a job as learning and engagement manager for Youth Theatre Arts Scotland, where she mentored young people, programmed mental health workshops and worked to support a culture of care across the youth theatre sector. She is currently a member of the Mental Health Arts Network working group. Hosted by Andrew Eaton-Lewis, arts programme officer for the Mental Health Foundation.

Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 8 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. The first interview of season 8 of features a spirited Rebecca Day sitting down to talk with Jim Wilson, one of the board members of the Riecken Foundation which has helped to create and maintain the Riecken Community Libraries throughout Central America. They take a deep dive into the history of these libraries, and how and why they have become successful community resources and cultural centers. They conclude by looking at the future of Riecken, plans for more development, and where the company will expand next! To close the inaugural episode of season 8, Chambolion Fairley, speaks with Johanna Kouzmine-Karavaïeff - Director of ifa Laboratory, a cultural ambassador for the diplomatic world institute, and a founding partner of Artisans of Innovation. Chambolion and Johanna start by discussing Johanna's career trajectory, including why understanding creative and cultural sectors are important and how they impact cultures and how & why she works with artists and designers for business and economic development. They touch on cultural diplomacy vs. cultural relations, the lack of support that culturally driven exchanges actually get in the international sphere, and finally the intrinsic value of art and creativity, and finally how these measures can help cultural groups break down stigmatization.

We doc filmmakers are no strangers to mental health. Whether by the very nature of being doc filmmakers or from the subjects of our documentaries, we're often dealing with levels of anxiety, stress, and/or depression on a daily basis. Still it's not something that we often openly talk about. That is, not until recently, as more and more doc filmmakers and more and more documentary organisations are having open and honest discussions about the topic of mental health as it related to independent documentary filmmakers. And our guest, documentary filmmaker and psychotherapist, Rebecca Day (Film in Mind) is often leading these discussions! My guest this week is Rebecca Day, a documentary producer and psychotherapist, who began her filmmaking career working for the Scottish Documentary Institute. She has produced the immersive essay film Becoming Animal which uses cinema’s sensory tools to explore humanity’s relationship with the natural environment and is currently producing Silent Men, a personal feature doc about men’s mental health. Alongside that, Rebecca currently offers therapeutic support to filmmakers through her business venture Film In Mind. I particularly love this interview because we explore the ways in which filmmaking can be quite emotionally strenuous and also why this isn’t talked about enough, but equally because Rebecca’s career is quite unique and is testament to the fact that you can do creatively fulfilling and vital work in the film industry away from what might be considered the mainstream. The whole point of this podcast is to discover the wealth of different jobs you can do with an interest film and I think Rebecca is a brilliant example of someone who has taken that interest in a really unusual but necessary direction. This podcast was also recorded on a Skype-esque online platform, so the sound quality isn’t as sparkling as usual - if it ever is - but I will say that it’s important to me to canvas a broad range of perspectives and not always host these interviews in London, because although that’s obviously a key destination for the film industry there is a lot of talent and creativity that exists in the regions and I think it would be remiss of me to neglect that. I have always chosen to opt for variety rather than perfection. So do forgive any sound niggles, and I hope you enjoy the content of the interview all the same.

Perhaps 2012 will bring the end of history, but it's only the beginning for the Fastener Distributor's Index. Holden Lewis, of BB&T Capital Markets, joins Mike McNulty on an extended edition of the Fastener News Report to discuss this exciting new industry benchmark (38:26). Greg Wiener, of QuickScrews International, returns to FTR just as the political climate begins to heat up, and mentions his company's entrance into the solar field before setting the bar for his forthcoming punditry on the show this season (61:05). Plus, from Exact Industries, the captivating and effervescent Rebecca Day explains her introduction to the world of roller derby, as well as her experience with the new FCH Sourcing Network association program (21:45). Bonus redux: Nylok's Nilo Urbani entertains the NFDA (58:55). Hosts Brian Musker and Eric Dudas convince themselves that the Mayans had it all wrong, dismissing all harbingers of doom in light of brisk fastener sales. Run time: 01:38:30
