My guest for this episode is Steven Ingram who worked for the bulk of his HR career doing consultancy before launching his own business, Neurodiversity Together, in the summer of 2023.Steven has ADHD, autism, and a stammer. What I absolutely love about him and what you'll realise from this conversation is that he approaches discussions on neurodiverity in a different way. It's a more holistic and inclusive way for all concerned rather than focussing simply on any singular individual.Having gone straight into the world of HR Consultancy from university he lifts the lid on that world as I think, for many, it's not a pathway that is considered at the entry level. However, Steven explains how, like in any role, you learn from those around you until you have the tools and knowledge to take on further responsibility so there's absolutely no barriers of entry for those starting off in their careers.Steven explains why he ultimately set up his own business and we learn how his approach to supporting individuals and organisations regarding neurodiversity puts just as much onus on the person as it does any adjustments that need to be made to assist them.I find Steven such a refreshing and insightful individual and talking to him raises many lightbulb and 'a-ha' moments. I'm sure you'll enjoy this and gets lots of 'a-ha' moments for yourself too.Support the show

This is a landmark episode as it's our 100th!!Therefore a landmark episode requires a guest of equal stature and I'm delighted to be joined by Annette Andrews.Annette has an incredibly fascinating career story to share. From growing up and moving countries ( and schools) reguarly due to her Dad's job, she strongly considered joining the Army but a significant sporting injury meant that was no longer an option.Unsure of what she then wanted to do with her life, some summer work at a local hospital put her under the tutelage of the HR Director. He encouraged Annette to apply for HR graduate schemes which led to her joining Ford  where she stayed for the next 18 years, gaining an MBA along the way.She then joined Lloyds Bank right before the global financial crash in 2008 and was on the actual trading floor the day the markets crashed. This led to supporting the huge transition project of bringing together Lloyds and Bank of Scotland as one new banking group.Annette moved to the US in a Head of HR role for Lloyds but she explains how various things going on in her personal life meant she needed something different from her career during this period and a role that demanded less from her. This is common to so many during their careers and it's encouraging to hear someone with such a stellar career recognise that there may be a time when we need to take our foot of the gas for a while and seek out something more condusive with our personal lives. Then when she was ready to tackle a larger role and a big challenge once again she moved to Lloyds of London as Chief People Officer.Annette now has a portfolio career doing HR Consultancy, Coaching, working as a Non-Exec Director, and doing Speaking events. This is an incredible episode that covers so much, especially about how Annette has pulled on the experiences throughout her life to aid her career but how life also impacts the decisions we make at times too.I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Support the show

She wants to learn and understand the intricacies of their culture, identity, and ways of working. The same approach can be applied for internal HR teams as your 'customers' are the internal stakeholders you support so it's about understanding their needs and adapting your delivery accoridngly to achieve the best results.Natalie's first HR role was with Woolworths during the period they went into administration, and she explains what a baptism of fire it was to the world of HR going through such a process. My guest for this episode is Alison Allen who, following a successful career in internal HR, set up her own HR Consultancy in March 2023.Alison's real passion through her career has been about developing people, so as well as providing generalist HR support to her clients, she also works as a coach and a mentor, an Insights practitioner, she is a trained and accredited mediator, and offers bespoke line management development programmes. Not wanting to stop at just that, Alison is also a qualified Menopause Workplace Trainer.Originally intending to be a Teacher, Alison realised that wasn't for her and embarked upon a period in L&D before moving into generalist HR. Her first HR role was a standalone position for a multi-site, national business and we discuss how you succeed in a role despite never having worked in it before and, therefore, with very limited knowledge and expertise. She then moved her career forward with a mindset of plugging the gaps in her own skills base to ensure she had as complete a tool kit as she possibly could. There's a pattern within Alison's journey of going back to former employer's but in a new role that aligns with her own wants, needs, and development goals and we discuss how and why sometimes you need to leave a company if opportunities aren't available but why there's also no reason you can't return in the future if circumstances change. When she decided to go self-employed, Alison knew that she wanted to become a specialist in menopause awareness and we talk through why this is such a critical topic. 75% of people going through the menopause have symptoms and, of those, 1 in 4 has serious symptoms. 100 years ago the average age of menopause was 57 and your life expectancy age was 59. Whereas now menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45-55 and average life expectancy is 83. Therefore, where is now appears in life is with women who are in the prime of their careers and often in influential and significant roles. 25% of women are considering leaving their employers due to lack of support and this is why it's so important we recognise the impact the menopause can have and employers do all they can to help. There are so many wonderful aspects we cover in this conversation beyond the menopause but this is certainly a hot topic that needs more awareness and education around so I hope you enjoy listening.Support the show

We have a million channels for communication - you know, WhatsApp, Facetime, Messenger, face-to-face, FB, Slack, email, carrier pigeon. But our actual communication is poor and getting poorer". What did you mean by this, why do you feel men are particularly bad at communicating? How can poor communication manifest in the workplace? What are the negative consequences on the employee experience and what can be done to improve things? In another post called '5 Ways Transactional Thinking Is Robbing You Blind -- and How to Stop It NOW', you say "The trouble is, most of really don't get how this transactional, tactical short-sighted thinking has become a self-fulfilling prophecy, with 4-second attention spans, insanely short news cycles and blazing fast internet and mobile data speeds driving us (crazy), anxious and inattentive." Transactional thinking, you suggest, blinds us to what unites us, while exacerbating what separates us, makes us more easily manipulated, takes away our hope and makes us depressed, and causes us more to be more dependent on technology and less dependent on our own sense of right and wrong, and truth and lies. Why do we think transactionally and how can we adjust our mindsets? What compelled you to write your latest book series, Be Your Own Commander-in-Chief?More About YuriYuri is a member of the Fast Company Executive Board, Newsweek Expert Forum and Forbes Coaches Council, as well as a contributor to Fast Company, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Newsweek, Business.com, Influencive and a number of other top platforms. Have you ever wondered what the mindset or approach is needed to become a HR leader? Well then what an episode we have this week, where I'm joined by Michele Haugh.Having done a business degree at university, Michele decided that a HR career path was for her but upon entering the job market found she had no practical experience. What Michele then did was strategically map out a route via recruitment, then training, that ultimately led to her fulfilling her career goals.Michele has tackled numerous relocations, due to her husband's job, and taking an extended career break whilst living in Thailand and raising their children. However, she has applied a key fundamental in her HR approach that has enabled her to reach the top of her game. It's the understanding that to be truly effective, you need to adopt a complete business partnering methodology. This means that you get to understand the business and it's issues first then look at the HR initiatives and strategies you can implement to add the maximum value. A simple concept, yet not one applied by everyone. Michele now runs a HR Consultancy, along with her business partner, where they provide HR support and Engagement initiatives to early or growth stage businesses.Listening to Michele talk, it's easy to understand how she has created such a successful HR career and there are some great takeaways and advice she delivers during our talk.I hope you enjoy listening.earlyHRSolutions - https://www.earlyhrsolutions.com/earlyEngage - https://www.earlyengage.com/Support the show

The focus of the discussion in this episode is how Kurt built Enspira as a new type of HR Consultancy, by focusing on mission critical HR issues and building solutions at the intersection of Human Capital management, talent search and technology. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:23] – I ask Kurt to share what inspired Enspira, from where he started to where he is now, and some of the key points that formed his strategy. [06:54] – One of the reasons Kurt started Enspira is to make meaningful change. [09:23] – What is the sweet point to get your services? [13:05] – What are some of the particular challenges that start-ups face, that you help them solve? [14:09] – Kurt gives an example of one of the most fractured and problematic areas. [17:06] – There are two types of HR professionals, the ones who love recruiting and hiring people and the ones that want to have nothing to do with it. [18:43] – Who better to run the search for specific positions, than the people who have been working in that organization for years? [21:15] - The ability to assess talent is superior. [25:30] – As a CEO, how do you decide what not to do as a company? [26:03] – The number one thing that differentiates effective leaders from ineffective leaders is the ability to focus and prioritize. [29:31] – Final question, business expression, or jargon that drives you crazy? [31:14] – Thank you and closing remarks. I was absolutely thrilled to have Wayne Singleton join me on this week's episode of the podcast.Wayne and I have been aware of each other for a few years but hadn't actually spoken until recently. I knew of him as a HR Consultant who did interim work but over the past few months so a variety of posts on LinkedIn promoting some of the other work activities he does. When we chatted and I learnt more about his situation I knew I had to get him on here as a guest.Wayne has had an amazing HR career working for some monolithic organisations such as BAE and Siemens, and we discuss various insights he learned from working in these types of companies. However, following a redundancy Wayne took some inspiration from a friend who said you should try and do what you love as often as you can. This resonated with Wayne and, combined with his Dad suffering a stroke, made him want to do more outdoor and endurance events and really embrace life doing what he really wanted. From that point onwards he has combined HR Consultancy and Freelancing with his other passions to have what he describes as a 'portfolio career' - basically doing lots of different things. For me, Wayne's story and journey is an absolute beacon for anyone who wants more out of life than the usual 9-5. He has been able to leverage on his HR career to secure various interim and consultancy work, which primarily pays the bills, whilst using the rest of his time to follow his heart and do things that put a smile on his face.I cannot state how enjoyable it was speaking with Wayne. I absolutely believe that anyone, not matter their vocation, could take some inspiration from this episode so I hope you enjoy it.Support the show

Sarah Hamilton-Gill created the formula for her company, Leap Into HR Consulting, based on 28 years of consulting experience, and over three decades supporting start ups and SME's to grow. In the past two years, Sarah and her team have supported over 100 new start up consultants during the pandemic. Sarah joins Lucinda on this episode to discuss the ways in which you can make the leap yourself into the world of HR consulting. KEY TAKEAWAYS Before the pandemic, the world of remote working was still being stress-tested and not seen as a viable way of working. Now that most people work remotely, it has opened up the world of consultancy, which can be seamlessly operated from anywhere. Employee relations are now at the forefront of most corporate conversations, and the proliferation of quality, remotely available HR advice means that the HR sector has never been hotter. In order to get started as a consultant, focus upon the things you are truly good at, and the areas in which you excel. Stay in your comfort zone to start with, and gently branch out into other areas. Clarity is essential. You need to work out your ideal life/work balance, as well as your areas of expertise. Also, you must gain clarity on your proposed pricing model. BEST MOMENTS 'There's a fantastic opportunity right now to go into consulting. It's never been better' 'The marketplace has never been busier for outsourcing HR' 'The emphasis at the moment is very operational based' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/   www.changesuperhero.com www.hruprising.com         Leap Into Consulting - https://www.leapintoconsulting.com About The Guest, Sarah Hamilton-Gill In Sarah's early years in HR Consulting, it was a challenge to juggle a busy consulting diary with being a parent to two babies. It soon became clear to her that without the support and flexibility she got from being a business owner that she would have missed much of her boys growing up. Sarah was just 28 when she decided to go it alone and set up her HR Consultancy business in 1992. Her parents were not happy with her choice to leave the corporate life but today, having successfully built a 7-figure business and two 6-figure businesses, it's obvious she made the right decision. Sarah started working with smaller companies then, as her business evolved, moved onto bigger names. Organisations Sarah has worked with include BT, Vodafone, Santander and the English Football Association. She has gained awards including being a Finalist in the CIPD Best HR Consultancy (2018), Influential Small Business Owner winner (2018), HR Consultancy of the year (2020) Business and Industry Today and finalist for the Reinvention Award (2020). This year Sarah was Winner of an Award from BreatheHR mad also nominated for a Woman In Business Award as well. On 5th November 2020 Sarah self-published her book, Leap into HR Consulting - How to move successfully from Corporate to Consulting which has not only topped the business books list on Amazon but was also a finalist in the Business Book Awards 2021. It's available at all good book shops and Amazon worldwide as an eBook, Audible and paperback. “If I can do it, you can do it too!" Happy New Year and welcome to 2022!I'm absolutely thrilled for the first episode of this new year to be joined by Philippa Lucarz who is HR Director at Myerscough College in Lancashire. Philippa started her working life via an apprenticeship before deciding upon a career in HR after speaking with family members who were in the profession. She has spent a large chunk of her career in the public sector, but also took the bold move to run her own HR Consultancy business for a year, before returning to employment in a Head of HR role for an organisation in the private sector. We discuss working in local authorities and the stigma that can be associated with people who have spent time in this sector. We also debate what it can be like running your own business and the challenges people might not be aware of when thinking of pursuing such a route. However, the cherry on top within this episode is listening to Philippa explain how she developed as a HR professional. She identified the need to constantly develop her own learning and awareness of the most current HR theories in order to best be able to influence business leaders and add the most value. I honestly believe that this is an episode that could help shape the thinking of almost all HR practitioners out there so I really hope you enjoy our discussion.Support the show

The future is inclusive. And to build that, we need the present to consider it. How many of us have a person from the queer community as colleagues? Maybe the media sector has more people as it is comparatively quite inclusive but then again policies rarely include them. Introducing a third check box in the gender section is not enough, and just having a PR exercise or rainbow-ing the logos in Pride month is just show-off. To talk about all this and more, we had Sonica Aron, Managing Partner at Marching Sheep- an HR Consultancy that helps businesses be more inclusive. We cover important issues- to begin with- identifying the lack of diversity, to training staff to be more more accommodating and understanding of the queer folks, implementing policies and including them in existing policies, etc. We also discuss inclusion with reference to persons with disability, special needs, learning disabilities, etc as well. Certainly, the key mistake that many of us make is not spending enough time first, trying to understand what the problem is. Furthermore, they go on to discuss various different topics including how HR could be more scientific in their approach, how to measure engagement and what the most effective evidence-practice might be. Joining Lucinda in this episode, is Jo Irwin from i4 Training where they discuss practical interviewing techniques that managers or HR can use to improve the interview process. Of course, you want to hire the most talented candidates. Some people believe that having line managers present as part of the interview process could help with finding the best fit for the role. However, know that interviews are more than this. It's not about who and who isn't present during the interview. Interviews are a good introduction for both parties—the interviewer and the interviewee. Therefore it is just as important for the panel to present themselves in a good light as it is for the candidate. Due to having a busy life this was never achieved; that was the case until Interserve Learning and Employment agreed to invest in her development and enrolled her onto an HR Business Partner/Consultant Apprenticeship L5 through their levy. Through this, she has been provided with the opportunity to lead on projects which will support the continued growth and success of the business. Lucinda is joined by Bina Briggs, the founder and director of Plain Talking HR. Many in the human resources industry feel the desire to move into independent consultancy but might not know how to go about it. Having transitioned into this area successfully over the past ten years, Bina has all kinds of invaluable advice on how to do so, as well as a wealth of insights on how companies can best use the skills and tools that independent consultants can offer. KEY TAKEAWAYS Plain Talking HR's business strategy back in 2009 at its beginning was “network, network, network”, because making a name outside of the corporate bubble is vital. The other important tenet was social media, which was still in its infancy. Even back then, its importance was clear to see. Branding was a vital part of establishing the business in the early days. The colours of their logo was memorable and made Plain Talking HR a real talking point among the industry. Always keep your goals in mind. When you've achieved certain landmarks in your business, whether time-wise or financially, begin to outsource the tasks you're not strongest at, so that you can concentrate on growing the business. Remember that it's always best to “work on your business rather than in your business” HR consultancy is somewhere between being a business partner and a director. Clients use Plain Talking HR as their outsourced HR department, dealing with processes such as recruitment, contracts, induction, terms and conditions and employee handbooks. Quite often, Bina is introduced to a company who have employed a business coach to help them improve their growing company. Accreditations and processes are needed in order to grow, and Bina finds herself shaping the next phase of the company's growth. Remember to keep things simple. You are a supplier. Companies don't want to know anything other than how quickly you can supply, how much it's going to cost, is it going to be of value and does it fit with their business and goals. Always keep up with your own self-development as well as the developments within the industry. As a consultant, you should be the end point for anyone looking for advice, so ensure that your training and expertise are current and all-encompassing. At the beginning of your consultancy, the temptation to follow the money can be overwhelming. But as time goes by you will learn that it's more important to work with companies who share your values. Choose your customers carefully. BEST MOMENTS 'To be honest I would never have thought that I would be a consultant' ‘Do what you're good at, and leave the rest to people who aren't good at that' ‘Work on your business rather than in your business' ‘It's about keeping it simple' ‘Integrity is vital' 'Stay with what you feel comfortable with, and what your true self is' VALUABLE RESOURCES Plain Talking HR The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher ABOUT THE GUEST Bina Briggs Plain Talking HR Ltd was born in 2009 and after a fruitful 8-year business partnership, I'm flying solo as Director of the company. Today on A Better HR Business I have a really enjoyable discussion with David Thomas of DTHR Solutions, a boutique HR consultancy based in Bridport on the wild Jurassic Coast in the UK. David and I talked about these things and more: What HR consulting he does and who he helps. What was good and not so good about making the move from the corporate world to becoming an independent consultant. How he got his first few clients and how he finds new clients now. HR-related businesses that market themselves well. Whether or not to systematise your services and/or to partner with other HR companies. Change and challenges in the Human Resources industry as a whole. Interesting people and resources that can help HR businesses grow faster. About The 'A Better HR Business' Podcast I write the Get More HR Clients blog as a former HR professional who has moved across to the marketing side of business. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Helen Brooks from the School of Arts at the University of Kent. Helen is Reader in Drama and a specialist on theatre in the First World War and she tells us how it was the case that her students precipitated this research area and we learn why she prefers to watch rather than read plays. Helen grew up in Kingston, Surrey, and we discover that one of her earliest memories is cycling along the towpath near her home. She tells us that she has quite a visual memory and how, as a child, time seemed to move more slowly. When growing up Helen was exposed to an eclectic range of music at home – everything from Motown to Handel’s Messiah, and she tells us why she felt especially nostalgic when recently listening to music during an episode of 'Derry Girls'. We also discover that Helen was really into 'Doctor Who' in the early 1990s at a time when it wasn’t cool and that Peter Davison, who played the fifth incarnation of 'Doctor Who', sent her a handwritten birthday card on her 13th birthday. The conversation then turns to what can happen if one is perceived as different to other children when at school.  Helen tells us about why she enjoyed revision as a child and was discouraged by her school from studying Drama at ‘A’ level, wanting her to do English and History instead. We talk about the ‘value’ of a degree, and Helen tells us about the time she worked for an HR Consultancy before going to university. She also reveals why she has considered contacting her former teachers from school. The conversation then moves on to her time at the University of Exeter where, as a Drama student, she wasn’t allowed to join any student societies. She talks about her apprehension of studying Samuel Beckett and how it can take a while to realize the importance of a module that was taken - decades later, sometimes. We also talk about diaries and Helen explains how and why she returned to writing a diary five years ago, and who it is being written for. We talk about the disconnect that can arise via a diary between the grand political events swirling around us and the way everyday life carries on.  In the final part of the interview we learn that Helen’s memories are predominantly positive despite being quite a worrier from a young age, and Helen reflects on how she and her university friends have followed totally different life and career paths yet how there is something that holds them all together. As a child her dream was to be a serious actor and we learn why she feels that there are comparisons between performing on stage and being a teacher. Finally, we find out whether Helen is a looking back or a looking forward type of person and why she tries to live in the present. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Helen Brooks and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.
