Nearly 14 years ago, while serving as an HR Director for a major Manchester charity, Niel Cope identified a gap in the market - local businesses lacking the right HR support and infrastructure. With a deep passion for helping organizations manage and develop their people, Niel took the leap, launching a business in the midst of a recession, with five kids, a big mortgage, and no clients. Today, that bold decision has grown into a thriving venture, making a real impact on businesses and their people. People Matters HR is now a growing company based in Bury, Greater Manchester, specializing in providing tailored HR and Health & Safety support to businesses of all sizes. In a wide-ranging discussion, Niel and I talked about: ✅ Identifying a market gap and launching an HR consultancy business. ✅ Balancing family responsibilities while transitioning to entrepreneurship. ✅ The impact of networking on People Matters HR's early growth. ✅ Pricing strategies for client acquisition and business sustainability. ✅ Transitioning out of daily operations for long-term success. ✅ The role of branding and SEO in driving business growth. ✅ Expanding into leadership development beyond compliance work. US Presidential Election: Implications for TA / HR Perhaps the most significant election on the planet is who our American friends choose to be the next President of the country. Will it be current VP Kamala Harris who offers a continuity programme or will be it be a remarkable return to Donald Trump for a second term? It's an incredible moment and one which has huge implications for TA / HR particularly given that the two candidates represent two sides of a culture war in which our sector plays a prominent part. We will not likely know the result by the time we go on air, nor will we use the moment to stoke tension but we will be trying to anticipate what implications either a Harris or Trump win will produce for the People function - Economic policy: end of taxation / increase in tariffs? - Data privacy / data security - how do vendors react? - DEIB: two polar opposites, what can we expect in advent of a Trump win? - Public sector employment: do we anticipate the gutting of government (therefore thousands of jobs) - Industrial policy: where do we expect investment to continue, increase or decrease - Immigration: how do the two politicians differ on immigration - Company policy: in a heated political environment, what is the best policy that employers should take? - What to do when politics bleeds in to company chat? - Future of TA / HR - Trump / Musk pretty much anti-HR. What can we expect in terms of policy? - International: can we expect brain drain in advent of victory for either side? All this and more on Brainfood Live On Air. Attendance management is not discipline. We use it when valid issues affect an employee's ability to meet the commitments of their employment. In this episode, I tackled the fairly common yet tricky issue of attendance or absenteeism management. This is part of the series I am doing for small and medium businesses and NFPs on HR. However it has a lot of relevance for anyone involved in this aspect of HR. It's Canadian content - especially towards the end. In it, I discuss how to on how to effectively manage attendance and the impact that poor attendance has on productivity, morale, the customer experience and the overall work environment. Also:
A probation period, at a simple level is a period of time at the start of a permanent full-time or part-time employment relationship that gives the employer the opportunity to assess whether their new employee is capable, reliable and suitable for the job. Simple in essence, but not so simple if not handled properly - with potentially both the employer and the employee left feeling frustrated if the key fundamentals and communication are missed. So, to talk to us about how to ensure performance management during probation is handled correctly, and to explain what can happen if it isn't, we're joined by Joe Thompson, HR Consultant here at Insight HR. How do you know when it is time to pivot or be pivoted in your career? Join us as we speak with Jenn Smith, founder of Flourish Careers as she shares her thoughts on how to make that transition when you are ready to pivot or if you are being pivoted. We spend 90,000 + hours working in our careers, and it is so important to be doing what you love. During our conversation Jenn shares how to reconnect from the heart as you navigate the complexities of transitioning, being aware of the energy you are generating and the impact you have on those you lead.Value alignment is so important and to break that down between your core values and your lifestyle values. To set yourself up by asking yourself what is next in your career? What industry aligns with where I want to be? Do they share the same values that are important to me or am I just drifting along because it is easier? What is the role I want to play and how do my skills transfer to this role? How do I want to impact this industry? She suggests taking an energy audit, find the patterns or clues that support you with what brings you joy, how does it align with who you are being. And that having only one career is not the goal in today's world. Seeing the many possibilities available to you is so important. There is a broken system when it comes to how resumes are received, and AI helps to filter but when you receive 1000's there is no way to get back to every person who is applying so what is a person to do? Tap into the “Hidden Job Market” – building a strong and vibrant network is key. If you are looking for a role, determine who you might know in that organization and if you don't know someone make it a point to get to know the people that work there. Find out what the company is like and how they operate to determine if it is the right fit for you. Finding a job is a full -time job and requires intention. Such a great conversation and Jenn shares so many stories and ways to support your career pivot. She also hosts her podcast “ The Flourish Careers” podcast with helpful tips and resources. Let us know your thoughts on the podcast and if you have questions please do reach out.https://www.wilempowered.com/virtual-and-online-courses/

Join us for an insightful tour around the world with Marcus Haynes, a Brooklyn-based entrepreneur with an intriguing Caribbean-African-American heritage. Picture this - you're a kid from New York, raised in Africa, and you find yourself bewildered in an American college, surrounded by an alcohol-heavy culture, a stark contradiction to the values instilled in you by your Pan-Africanist parents. That's Marcus's story, and he's here to share his unique perspective on cultural identity, global experiences, and life's unexpected twists and turns.Ever wondered what it's like to live in a remote African village? Marcus vividly transports us to a humble community outside Kasumu, Kenya, where language barriers, cold showers, and constrained resources are part of everyday life. This journey doesn't stop there; we follow him to South Africa, where he navigates the contrasting lifestyles of Soweto and Johannesburg amidst socio-political change. And if you think that's fascinating, wait until you hear about his unexpected encounter with Nelson Mandela and the subsequent culture shock of returning to college life in the US!As our conversation with Marcus progresses, we address more than just global travel and cultural experiences. We delve into his entrepreneurial journey and his work as an HR Consultant. Marcus uses his multicultural background to offer valuable insights into the growing emphasis on DEI, diversity, equity, and inclusion in companies. But it's not all serious.
