Patentes clave: • US 5 003 186 A (Welsbach, 1989). ¿Quién controla realmente a DARPA? This year's UK general election saw a range of concerns about the quality of election discourse. Alongside evidence of many candidates facing abuse and intimidation, the campaign also saw the spread – particularly online – of misinformation and disinformation. Meanwhile, Labour and the Conservatives were accused of a ‘conspiracy of silence' about the costing of party manifesto pledges, and voters faced difficulties knowing where to turn for trustworthy sources of information. These challenges all threaten to undermine the UK's democratic process. So how can they be tackled? This webinar will bring together experts from the Electoral Commission, Full Fact, and the Jo Cox Civility Commission to discuss options for practical solutions.Speakers:Michela Palese – Head of Policy, Electoral CommissionChris Morris – CEO, Full FactHannah Phillips – Manager, Jo Cox Civility CommissionChair: Professor Alan Renwick – Deputy Director of the Constitution Unit LinksWebsite: www.ucl.ac.uk/constitution-unitMailing list: www.ucl.ac.uk/constitution-unit/get-involvedBlog: https://constitution-unit.com/
The IfG rebuttal unit kicked into gear this week after our very own Nick Davies found himself dragged into the Conservative party's tax attack on Labour. So where did that number really come from – and what can Labour do about it? Full Fact's Chris Morris joins the IfG podcast to look back on a very noisy TV debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer. We're into the manifesto countdown – but will either Labour or the Conservatives say anything about the problems piling up for whoever forms the next government? A new IfG paper, The Precarious State of the State, sets out the scale and severity of the challenges likely to dominate the next parliament. Plus: The state of GPs' surgeries. Another new IfG report – out on Saturday – says GPs' surgeries are old, cramped and crumbling. So, what can be done about it? Hannah White presents, with Nick Davies and Ben Paxton. The emerging role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping political discourse is a potential game changer. It has the capacity to fabricate fake interviews and manipulate images, all of which could mislead voters and disrupt the democratic process. But could it affect the results of our elections? We talk to Chris Morris, the head of factchecking organisation Full Fact, about the threats posed by these technologies, the potential scale of misinformation in politics, and the measures politicians and political parties need to take to counteract them. With public trust in political figures at a low ebb we discuss how AI-generated misinformation could further erode confidence in electoral integrity and democratic values and the responsibility on political parties to therefore use AI ethically.Chris Morris stresses the importance of preparing in advance for scenarios where AI could influence election outcomes, including at the individual constituency level. He suggests looking to models like that used in Canada for handling major information incidents to ensure clarity and trust in how election-related misinformation is addressed. Full Fact has called for similar proactive measures to be discussed and implemented in the UKWe also delve into the recent parliamentary rule changes that extend to all MPs a right that was previously reserved for Ministers – the right to rectify any inaccurate statements in Hansard, the official record of parliamentary proceedings. But should MPs face sanctions, perhaps even a criminal offence for lying in Parliament, if they refuse to correct inaccuracies?Full Fact frequently draws attention to inaccurate claims made by MP, but not all MPs are willing to correct the record. So, what reason do these MPs give for their unwillingness to retract inaccurate statements? And with the general election potentially just weeks away, we discuss how Full Fact is gearing up organisationally for the campaign and its role in combating misinformation. We discuss the importance of media literacy, and whether the focus of factcheckers should be on ‘pre-bunking' misinformation – putting accurate information out in the public sphere first – rather than on ‘de-bunking' false claims once they are made and the falsehoods have spread.
In this episode of Five Minutes With... we speak to Alex Brocklehurst from Full Fact, the UK's independent fact checking authority. Alex talks about issues of disinformation and how we can empower young people to help combat its spread.

Never ones to shirk a challenge, Nish and Coco launch ‘Chat Shit Get Banged', their campaign to stop politicians from lying. They get some expert help from Will Moy, from fact checkers Full Fact - he's dedicated his life to correcting the mistakes and mistruths of the people elected to lead us…not mislead us. With a general election on the horizon next year, he tells them he's done with “bullshit manifestos”, and reveals how AI could help root out the liars.Campaigning works! Nish and Coco dissect the new Renters Reform Bill, which has finally been published thanks to the tireless efforts of people like our guest Anny Cullum, one of the founders of the community union Acorn. Laura takes us behind the scenes at Full Fact, explaining how they operate on the front line of misinformation and disinformation. Laura's career has included roles with the BBC and the Open University, and she shares with us what she's learned about using digital to achieve impact at scale, and how tech can increase inclusion. Zoe and Paul summarise the tech news stories that have caught their eye, including the social media storm surrounding the Amber Heard and Johnny Depp courtcase, and whether being cancelled has stopped Mumford and Sons' former banjo player from picking up his phone (or banjo) again. Propaganda in warfare is an ancient concept, but has Russia's information campaign since it invaded Ukraine taken things to a new level? Are Russia's state-controlled media and troll factories all about domestic support or an attempt to win international support? And how does the West counter fake news and help ensure that people can trust the information they see? In this special edition of Inside Briefing, Bronwen Maddox is joined by Marianna Spring, the BBC's specialist disinformation and social media reporter, Full Fact director Will Moy, and Ian Garner, historian and translator of Russian war propaganda and author of the forthcoming Stalingrad Lives: Stories of Combat & Survival. Produced by Candice McKenzie.

While forgery and deception are intrinsically linked to the human condition, the information age in which we live is increasingly moving toward what author and broadcaster Nina Schick describes as the infocalypse, a point in the not-too-distant-future when it will become impossible to tell what is real and what is fake in the media we consume. Over the last decade, Nina has cultivated her expertise in geopolitics and emerging technology. The second episode of Future-Proofing Media Freedom looks at how media organisations are responding to the ongoing crisis of disinformation. As landmark elections loom in, among other countries, the US and Myanmar, the role of the media as a source of trusted, accurate information is under renewed scrutiny. Social media-driven disinformation campaigns have been regular features of many recent electoral events, from the UK’s referendum on Europe to the 2016 US presidential election, and countless other local and national elections around the world. How can media organisations counter the spread of fake news, and support informed, transparent elections? Have new strategies emerged since 2016 to address disinformation campaigns? What should governments be doing to support the media sector in these endeavours? To discuss these questions Ben Horton and Dr Julie Posetti are joined by Mevan Babakar (Deputy CEO of Full Fact), Melissa Fleming (United Nations Under-Secretary General for Global Communications), Sonny Swe (Founder of Frontier Myanmar) and Dr Ethan Zuckerman (Founder of the Institute for Digital Public Infrastructure). Read the report: Journalism and the Pandemic Credits: Speakers: Mevan Babakar, Melissa Fleming, Sonny Swe, Ethan Zuckerman Hosts: Ben Horton, Julie Posetti Editor: Jamie Reed Recorded and produced by Chatham House, in collaboration with Luminate and the International Center for Journalists.

A flood of misinformation and disinformation followed Covid-19's arrival to Ireland. You likely saw a lot of this firsthand. Maybe it was the rumours of the Irish military being deployed to enforce lockdown, or a suggestion that drinking water would prevent you from catching Covid-19. It has become a significant feature of public discourse on the crisis in recent weeks and months, but is it here to stay, or as we begin to live alongside the virus until a vaccine arrives, will it simply ebb away? TheJournal.ie examined this in a webinar last week, organised in partnership with the European Parliament Office in Ireland. Presenter Sinéad O'Carroll was joined by our own Deputy Editor, and the lead of TheJournal.ie's FactCheck project, Christine Bohan as well as FullFact's Nicola Aitken, Per Enerud of the European External Action Service and MEP Billy Kelleher.

This is an interview with Will Moy, CEO of the UK's leading fact checking charity, FullFact.
This week an old friend of ours Brian Eggo from Glasgow Skeptics joins us to bring you a show packed with news, thoughts and curiousities. We talk about how Skeptics in the Pub events are going online, that one time Rupert Sheldrake got stabbed and how Pope Francis has nothing to offer to help with the pandemic. After the usual COVID-19 update we talk about how Sweden takes a different approach to the disease than most, why the Royal Astrologer should not be trusted, and how a German consumer reported homeopaths for offering sugar pills to avoid infection. We also talk about Massimo Polidoro's new video series, "OK Scienza", Britt Marie Hermes' law suit and the Skeptics Legal Defence initiative by the Australian Skeptics Inc. We mention how French skeptics at AFiS respond to a fake treatment Trump and Bolsonaro both promote, Fullfact brings you a list of guidelines to fact-checking and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences translates the mythbusting site of WHO. Unfortunately, the WHO also gets the prize for being Really Wrong for removing the advice not to use Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) against Covid-19.
Alexis is joined with Gloria De Piero hosting talkPOLITICS. They cover Dyson being approached to manufacture ventilators with Anthony Brown and discuss the food supply chain with David Henig. Do you feel like you've been conned or scared of being scammed by fraudsters? Tom Phillips from Full Fact tries to quash your queries. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As the number of people infected with coronavirus rises rapidly in Europe and the US, can journalists ever report the situation without causing panic? In Italy the newspaper Corriere della Sera has been accused of endangering public health after it published a leak of a government order to lock down the north of the country, resulting in people fleeing the region before it was implemented. Should journalists ever withhold the truth? Also in the programme, how Good Housekeeping has become the biggest selling women's lifestyle magazine in the UK. Amol Rajan is joined by Jess Brammar, editor in chief HuffPost UK, Tom Phillips, editor Full Fact, Paul Nuki, global health security editor The Daily Telegraph, Gaby Huddart, editor in chief Good Housekeeping and Dany Mitzman, freelance journalist in Italy. Producer: Richard Hooper

This week before we get into the meat of the show, we talk Corona, Greta Thunberg and look forward to Adam Rutherford's new book, “How to Argue with a Racist”. We also have two good news for our German friends: Natalie Grams have launched her podcast “Grams' Sprechstunde” and we have a ticket raffle for SkepKon 2020 in Berlin. Tune in to find out how you can win a free ticket! In this week in history we celebrate Charles Darwin who was born on 12 February 1809. Pontus Pokes the Pope for hypocritically telling others how to reduce poverty when he personally has misplaced tens of millions of Euro from the Peters' Pence charity. Also Cardinal Barbarin get off scot-free for covering up a child molester. In the news we report that the BBC launches “My World”, a show to teach young audiences to spot fake news, that the WHO fights the “Infodemic” of fake Coronavirus rumours and that they get help from Factcheck.org and Fullfact.org. Climate change reaches new heights with the warmest January on record for Europe and Ryan Air hypocritically wants us to believe that their flights are carbon friendly (we don't buy it). We end by given a Really Wrong Award to the Swedish legal system which allows acupuncturists to ram needles into the hearts of cancer patients. That's right, heart-o-puncture™ is apparently legal. Enjoy! Segments: Intro; Greetings; This Week; Pontus Pokes the Pope; News; Really Wrong; Quote and Farewell; Outro; Out-takes Events Calendar: http://theesp.eu/events_in_europe
Anti-Semitic incidents, ranging from vandalism through murder, are on the rise in Great Britain, and across Europe and North America. Julia Neuberger - Senior Rabbi at West London Synagogue, a member of the House of Lords, chair of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, and trustee of Full Fact, an organization dedicated to getting proper information and fair evidence before the public – writes for the contemporary reader who wants clarification of the way this insidious prejudice has reappeared in many parts of today's society. She explains that anti-Semitism is not only a threat to Jews, but also to other minorities and to the society as whole, as it promotes paranoid conspiracy theories and irrationality. Beginning with a history of anti-Semitism, from ancient times, through early Christianity, through the Middle Ages and on to Nazi ideology, Antisemitism: What It Is, What It Isn't, Why It Matters (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 2019) also explores the boundary between legitimate criticism of Israeli policies and anti-Semitic Israel -bashing. Neuberger describes in detail the many manifestations of anti-Semitism in Britain, particularly, but by no means exclusively, as it has developed in the British Labor Party under Jeremy Corbin. Renee Garfinkel, Ph.D. is a psychologist, writer, and Middle East commentator for the nationally syndicated TV program, The Armstrong Williams Show. This week on the podcast that explains the way that government works (and why it often doesn’t)... The IfG team are joined by New Statesman political editor Stephen Bush to make sense of the party manifestos. Do all the spending pledges add up? And does it matter if they don’t? There’s a bit of Brexit in there too – but what are the EU up to while UK politicians are busy knocking on doors? We also speak to Full Fact boss Will Moy about calling out politicians who don’t tell the truth. Plus: What does Breakfast at Tiffany’s have in common with the Labour manifesto? Hosted by Bronwen Maddox with Cath Haddon and Giles Wilkes plus Stephen Bush, Georgina Wright and Gavin Freeguard. Audio production by Alex Rees. The use of personal data by political parties, targeted online advertising, the spread of information, misinformation and disinformation on social media – technology has transformed how election campaigns unfold in the 21st century. But have our rules and regulations kept pace with technology? Is it possible to run a free and fair election in 2019? And does new technology provide opportunities to improve our electoral system, as well as dangers to be avoided? Our expert panel tackled these questions, and more. Our panel included: Sir John Holmes, chair of the Electoral Commission Liz Carolan, head of Digital Action and co-founder of the Transparent Referendum Initiative Dr Martin Moore, director of the Centre for the Study of Communication, Media and Power at King’s College, London and author of Democracy Hacked Will Moy, director of Full Fact. The event was chaired by Gavin Freeguard, programme director at the Institute for Government.
Discussing the so-called ‘post-truth’ culture, Tom Phillips, editor of independent fact-checking organisation Full Fact, tells Monocle Reads how humans have treated truth throughout history and identifies habits that encourage our tale-twisting tendencies.
Numbers are subverted to manipulate people and policy – we know this, history has plenty of evidence of this happening. But will numbers always be subverted? Is there anything we can do to stop that? We start with £350 million – the famous number at the centre of the 2016 EU Referendum debate and hear from Ed Humpherson, the UK Statistics Authority’s Director General of Regulation, about how both sides stepped out of line – and what he did about it. Andreas Georgiou, former President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority, shows us how standing up for the truth of numbers can have life and death consequences; Sir David Spiegelhalter tells us why police-reported crime statistics have lost their designation as national statistics; and Will Moy, Chief Executive from Full Fact, discusses what he and his team are doing to help the public sift fact from fiction. Numbers are being subverted – but many are on the case to put this right. Why? ICAEW Executive Director Robert Hodgkinson reminds us that this is fundamentally a conversation about ethics – what you measure, how you measure and how you communicate it frames the public debate. Join Louise Cooper and her guests as they explore £350 million – Truth, Lies and Numbers in the new podcast series from ICAEW. ICAEW is a world-leading professional membership organisation that promotes, develops and supports over 181,500 chartered accountants and students worldwide. We provide qualifications and professional development, share our knowledge, insight and technical expertise, and protect the quality and integrity of the accountancy and finance profession.

This week, the crew look at Brexit coverage, opinions on the media from the #PeoplesVote march. We examine the actual numbers on that march with MMU crowd science expert Prof Keith Still. We debate columnists vs journalists, the EU Copyright Directive, and whether the toxic Brexit genie will ever crawl back inside its bottle. INSTAGRAM INTRODUCE THE ABILITY TO POST TO MULTIPLE ACCOUNTSIn my opinion, I think this is a backwards step for Instagram. It will be too tempting to post the same content to multiple accounts. It is highly likely that some of your followers will follow your other accounts, therefore they will see the same content over and over. #NotGood for the user. YOUTUBE REMOVE THE ABILITY TO AUTO-TWEET VIDEOSAs of January 31st, YouTube creators will no longer be able to set up automated posts to Twitter. I am not sure if this is a YouTube decision or a Twitter decision, but either way, I think it is probably a good thing. Less automation on Twitter is always a good thing. GOOGLE CHROME'S AD-BLOCKER WILL COME INTO EFFECT IN JULY 2019This shows how forward-thinking Google is. Rather than let broader ad blockers rule the way forward, Google decided to create its own blocker, which would stop showing ads - including those owned or served by Google - on websites which were not compliant with the Better Ads Standards! Way to go Google! TWITTER UPGRADED THE SCHEDULING FEATURE ON TWEETDECKAs YouTube remove the ability to automatically post your videos to Twitter, Tweetdeck (owned by Twitter) announced the ability to schedule videos and multiple images to the platform. Are Twitter finally investing in the platform? I am wondering if Twitter will revoke the "scheduling" API from other platforms such as Hootsuite etc in the future? In a world where facts are increasingly up for debate, who is fact-checking actually for? It's one of the biggest questions in journalism, and we're tackling it for our very first episode. First, Amy Sippitt talks about who reads stories from Full Fact, a fact-checking project in the United Kingdom (Spoiler: It's mostly men!) Then, Brendan Nyhan from the University of Michigan gives us the lowdown on which audience needs fact-checking the most.(Mis)informed is hosted by Daniel Funke and produced by Vanya Tsvetkova, an interactive learning producer at Poynter's News University. It was edited by Alexios Mantzarlis, with additional editing and creative direction from Alex Laughlin.Let us know what you think by tweeting @factchecknet and read more coverage of misinformation at poy.nu/AllTheFacts.
Fake news can be responded to with fact-checking. However, it's easier to create fake news than the fact check it. Full Fact is the UK's independent fact-checking organization. In this episode, Kyle interviews Mevan Babakar, head of automated fact-checking at Full Fact. Our discussion talks about the process and challenges in doing fact-checking. Full Fact has been exploring ways in which machine learning can assist in automating parts of the fact-checking process. Progress in areas like this allows journalists to be more effective and rapid in responding to new information.

Why are people spending real money to buy land that only exists in virtual reality? In the virtual world of Decentraland, users can build whatever they can imagine. Some hope to make a profit by trading goods and services using the social platform’s own cryptocurrency. Could this be the birth of a new virtual economy or a cryptocurrency bubble waiting to burst? Could computers do a better job than humans at exposing fake news? Tim Harford interviews Mevan Babakar of the fact-checking organisation Fullfact about the software tools she and her team are building to try to automatically verify statistical claims. Why would you go to the coldest place on Earth? A place mostly devoid of life, where there are rarely more than a few thousand other humans spread out across a landmass twice the size of Australia. Shabnam Grewal reports on Antarctica whose sublime beauty is matched by its capacity to kill you, very fast. (Photo Credit: Decentraland.org)

The Brexit referendum and the election of US President Donald Trump sparked widespread interest in the role of facts in political and policy debate, both among the behaviour of traditional political actors and the proliferation of information sources online. But concern about unreality in politics and public life existed before 2016. So how big is the problem really? And is there anything to be done to turn back the tide? To discuss this, the Institute for Government welcomed Evan Davis, BBC presenter, economist and author of Post-Truth: Why We Have Reached Peak Bullshit and What We Can Do About It. Will Moy, Director of Full Fact, which ran a Facebook and Google-backed fact-checking and verification campaign during the General Election, also joined the event. The event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.
The automated fact-checking tools, called Live and Trends, will be available in 2018 to journalists and fact-checkers globally
We depart from the usual format this week to bring you two fascinating interviews about the craft of journalism: Mevan Babakar and Phoebe Arnold from Full Fact discuss the art of fact checking and its role in the digital age. Olly also talks to the obituaries editor of the Times, Simon Pearson, on how to write the final word on a person's life. This is interview was first published on Olly's other, other podcast series The Modern Mann - but this has some bonus content especially for Media Podcast listeners. Enjoy! Many news outlets have reported this week that a Waitrose supermarket pushes up house prices in the surrounding area. It’s based on research that also suggests that other supermarkets have a similar but smaller effect. We take a highly sceptical look at the correlation. Statistics and the EU referendum campaign We look at how the two campaigns, the media, and the much-discussed “experts” used statistics during the EU referendum campaign. Tim Harford interviews Will Moy, director of Fullfact, and Paul Johnson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Antiques Roadshow BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow is a hugely popular television programme, where experts examine and value antiques and collectables. We ask whether the items featured really jump in value, or are we just seeing the price tag rise over the centuries in line with inflation? More Or Less reporter Charlotte McDonald heads down to the show to find out. Computer Science and Socks Tim Harford speaks to Brian Christian, co-author of ‘Algorithms to Live by: The Computer Science of Human Decisions’. How can the techniques of computer science help us in every-day situations? And, most importantly, which algorithm will help our reporter Jordan Dunbar sort out his socks?
