Families have been fleeing to Illinois to protect their transgender and non-binary children from anti-trans laws and enroll them in more inclusive schools. The Supreme Court agreed to review one law this week that restricts gender-affirming care. But many of the laws on the books directly relate to school policy. Across the nation, many educators are fighting back and confronting these school policies. A new book is hoping to give teachers a guide to create more inclusive classrooms – no matter the laws in their state. It's called “The Advocate Educator's Handbook.” To hear more, Reset sat down with the co-authors Rebecca Kling, a nationally known trans advocate based in Chicago, and Vanessa Ford, a former educator and a parent to a trans child. Are you concerned about the #InclusiveLeadership skills gap in today's workforce? Are you curious about how to change this reality? You're not alone.    In this year's State of the Union, President Biden mentioned a recent meeting he had with nearly all Fortune 500 CEOs. He asked them what they needed most.   They unequivocally said, "a better-educated workforce." Yet many of these same CEOs resist making investments in their L&D programs, with 51% saying they are: "A waste of time."    Past learning workshops my company delivered have enumerated the significant ROI gained from these programs, including higher engagement and retention rates. We've also discussed the C-Suite's responsibility in up-skilling their workforce.   Yet, to what degree of responsibility does the U.S. education system also have when it comes to equipping the next generation with inclusive leadership skills?   To answer this BIG question, Rhodes had a thought-provoking discussion with Rebecca Kling to explore the roles both businesses and the education system play in building a future-ready workforce.   Rebecca is the co-author of The Advocate Educator's Handbook, and is the co-founder of A Better World Collaborative. In this episode, you'll discover:   1) The surprising truth behind why CEOs might see learning programs as a "waste of time." 2) How recent legislative attacks on critical race theory (CRT), LGBTQ+ inclusive and book bans harm future leaders. 3) The alarming rise in school bullying and its impact on students' social-emotional skills (3). 4) Practical strategies for equipping younger generations with the leadership skills needed to thrive in a diverse workplace.   The conversation is a value-add for C-suite executives, DEIB professionals, social justice champions, and anyone passionate about building belonging at work.   Don't miss your chance to connect with a nationally renowned expert on this latest episode of the podcast.   Savor this insightful talk, and if you're looking for more ways to connect with inspiring leaders like Rebecca, be sure to join the Belonging Membership Community – a community of inclusive leaders committed to advancing their DEIB goals while practicing community care. How Storytelling is a Powerful Form of Advocacy with Rebecca Kling '07

Northwestern Intersections

It's empowering to tell your story, but even more so to empower others to share their own. As a student in Performance Studies at Northwestern and throughout her time at Piven Theatre Workshop, Rebecca Kling '07 gathered the tools of performance: movement, storytelling, adaption, audience, lighting. After graduation while in Tim Miller's paradigm shifting workshop at Link's Hall, "Charged Bodies", Kling understood how those tools could be applied internally: sharing her own personal narrative of transition and how she navigates the world as a trans-woman. She describes how at the time, she was the only trans-performer she knew of publicly speaking about her experiences; trans-folks were simply not visible the same way they are today with rise of social media and online communities. Through orchestrating talk-backs with the audience—opportunities for members to ask questions about trans-folks and their experiences—Kling realized the potential of performance to also serve as a tool to educate and advocate.  Kling also shares how there were very little resources for trans students during her time at Northwestern in the early 2000s. She was often sent off-campus to seek resources and did not have access to other members of the trans community. A lot has changed since she graduated in 2007. However, the baseline changes such as all-gender bathrooms, access to HRT, name changes and preferred pronouns, are just the beginning. Kling calls on allies to join the fight in advocating for meaningful and material changes that will allow trans- and gender non-conforming folks to feel validated and safe. Whether it's at your school, your job, or in your social circle. This call to action is especially crucial during a time when trans rights and bodily autonomy at large are being threatened. In this episode of Northwestern Intersections, Rebecca Kling shares how through performance studies she realized the radical power of telling your own story, and how she made the transition from performer to educator and activist. Cofounder of Better World Collaborative—a trans-, woman-, and Latinx-owned consultancy firm—she continues to use storytelling to help businesses, nonprofits, and the creative industry take authentic steps to linking their missions in equity and inclusion.   Links to Northwestern resources for trans-students and allies: · Northwestern Medicine Gender Pathways Program | Northwestern Medicine.  · All Gender Housing: Residential Services - Northwestern University · Queer @ NU: Multicultural Student Affairs - Northwestern University · Undergraduate Courses (2022-23): Gender & Sexuality Studies Program - Northwestern University · Center for Applied Transgender Studies · Out Network Evanston · Reimagining the GSRC: Campus Inclusion & Community - Northwestern University

“No one is obligated to be an educator about their identity.” Artist Rebecca Kling talks about issues surrounding gender, bathroom use and anti trans activism. She talks about being a transgender activist and educator. Rebecca unpacks the idea of reciprocity and whether someone is or isn't obligated to teach about their identity. She shares personal stories of traveling as a performer and advocate and how that's influenced her understanding of how progress is made. Rebecca also talks about ways to understand trans issues and the many ways to be an ally. Rebecca Kling is a Washington, D.C. based transgender artist and educator who explores gender and identity through solo performance pieces and educational workshops. Her multidisciplinary performances incorporate conversational storytelling, personal narrative, humor, and more. Kling takes the position that sharing accessible queer narrative with a wide audience is a form of activism, and that understanding combats bigotry.

The Queer Life is an independent broadcast for LGBT news and modern perspectives, is broadcast live on Fridays 6 - 8pm PST on KBBF 89.1 San Francisco and California's north bay.  Kaiya is awesome, and is definitely a voice for the trans community I am proud to be associated with. After the housekeeping, I introduce Zinnia Jones.  Zinnia has been making atheist videos for years, in fact it was her and Rebecca Watson (of skepchick.org) that helped me overcome my fear of hell, the last stumbling block on my road to accepting my own lack of god belief.  Zinnia has also been documenting her bodily transition, and sharing it with the world.  She has never been one to shy away from a camera, is never afraid to eloquently posit her opinion, and (very important for this episode) represents a positive expression of a sex positive culture. Zinnia goes over many topics such as: Sex after transition - from the position of someone who has transitioned Why so many cis-het men fetishize people who are transgender Where you can find transgender porn online - that was not made for cis-het men Discussion of intercourse & the uniqueness of bodies Sex toy recommendations Other projects Zinnia is working on Transgender parenting Zinnia also provided me with a plethora of links to share with you: QueerPorn.TV http://queerporn.tv/ Indie Porn Revolution http://www.indiepornrevolution.com/indie-porn/ Crash Pad http://crashpadseries.com/queer-porn/ Trans Women + Sex = Awesome, by Rebecca Kling http://early2bed.com/2014/02/05/trans-women-sex-awesome/ F---ing Trans Women #0, by Mira Bellwether http://imgur.com/a/Skrvp Magic Wand vibrator http://magicwandoriginal.com/ Tantus toys http://www.tantusinc.com/ Tantus Ripple small http://www.tantusinc.com/collections/forhim/products/ripple-small Gender Analysis on Patreon http://www.patreon.com/zinniajones Zinnia Jones homepage http://zinniajones.com/ After Zinnia I move over to Sam Harris, which makes sense, because Sam made me so f'ing mad. A couple of weeks ago Sam Harris was on Real Time with Bill Maher, and the two of them got into a heated debate with Ben Affleck, who called them out on the "gross and racist" opinions of Islam.  You can watch the link for yourself here: http://vimeo.com/108354205 I get a little preachy and paternalistic, and for that I apologize.  If you disagree with me, feel free to let me know.  You have my email, my phone, but I'm also on twitter @transatheistpod and you can comment on episodes on the show page www.trans-atheist.net or Facebook at www.facebook.com/transatheistpod Finally the show ends with music from Paulina Angel, and the single off her latest album Saturday Mornings Around the Pool, "California Baby"  Paulina was recently interviewed over on The Queer Life, episode 6 on September 5, 2014.  You can hear the whole episode here: http://www.thequeerlife.org/2014/09/03/episode-006-paulina-angel/  More Paulina Angel Links PaulinaAngelMusic.bandcamp.com www.facebook.com/PaulinaAngelMusicOfficial   And that's all I have for you this episode.   Wait!  I also have a fantastic joke!   Why did the rabbit plumber eat her lunch under the sink?  Because that's where she found the leek!   Oh the jokes just keep getting better and better!   -Maddy
