Gender diversity in sports has become a focal point in the culture war and point of disagreement for sports governing bodies. We recorded this episode before the recent executive orders affecting transgender people. But those recent developments have put the political in a new light. Hopefully what you hear feels like a totally different kind of conversation. What is the nature of biological male advantage? What constitutes fairness? How do we reconcile gender identity and underlying biology?Host Alex Grodd moderates a disagreement between sports legal expert Doriane Coleman and sports physicist Joanna Harper. They explore the nuances of sex/gender category definitions, the implications of hormone therapy for gender diverse athletes, and the broader societal impacts of inclusion in female sports categories. Through deep dives into the science, historical context, and ethical considerations, this is a different kind of conversation about fairness, biology, and gender identity in competitive sports.Got questions or comments about this episode? Welcome back to Season 4 of At Your Cervix the Podcast! We are delighted to bring to you this fascinating discussion with Loughborough University Researcher Joanna Harper about Transgender Athlete Performance. Joanna, originally from a small town north of Toronto is a medical researcher at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom where her research focuses on this very topic. Author of the book, Sporting Gender: The History, Science and Stories of Transgender and Intersex Athletes, she has also authored articles on gender diverse athletes in peer-reviewed scientific publications. Since 2015, Joanna has served as an advisor on transgender and intersex athletes to multiple sporting federations including the International Olympic Committee. In this episode we discuss what it means to be a transgender athlete, what confusion and questions arise within high performance competition and what the science actually tells us in relation to whether transgender women hold a "sporting advantage". In a special, extended edition of The Sports Desk, Sarah Mulkerrins, Dan Roan and Jane Dougall explore and explain the issues surrounding transgender women competing in women's sport. With the governing bodies of cycling and swimming reviewing their transgender policies and widespread calls for more leadership from the International Olympic Committee, what happens next as sport wrestles with a complex balance of inclusion, sporting fairness and safety? We'll hear from two elite GB runners, who want clear regulations to protect women's sport and a separate “open category” to include men and trans athletes. Transgender racing driver Charlie Martin tells the story of her transition and calls the exclusion of trans women in sport “inhuman” and “criminal”. Sports scientist Ross Tucker says the International Olympic Committee have prioritised inclusion “at the expense of the integrity of women's sport”, while Loughborough University sports scientist Joanna Harper says “definitive answers” on any athletic advantages for trans women are 20 years away. Lastly, Magali Martowicz, Head of Human Rights at the IOC, defends their guidance that there should be “no assumption” that trans women have an advantage and that sports bodies should decide their own policies on a “case by case” basis.

It's been 125 years since the modern Olympics were founded in Athens, and this year will see a monumental first for the world's biggest sporting competition: the inclusion of Laurel Hubbard, a transgender female athlete, in the women's weightlifting competition. In 2015, the IOC issued guidelines that allow transgendered athletes to compete as a woman if their testosterone levels are suppressed to predetermined level prior to competing. Scientific advisers to the IOC argue that hormone therapy is sufficient in creating a level playing field between transgendered athletes and biological females. Trans women, they maintain, who have undergone estrogen therapy, do not possess a material athletic advantage over cisgender women. Critics of the current IOC policy argue that the suppression of testosterone does not mitigate many of the physical advantages gained by those who have gone through puberty as males - such as developing a bigger heart, more lung capacity, longer skeletal structures, etc. Separate sports categories for women and men were created to give female athletes the chance to compete against each other and win on approximately equal terms. Including transgender women in sports competitions like the Olympics is profoundly unfair to cisgender females and denigrates their hard work and sacrifice as elite athletes. Arguing for the motion is Joanna Harper, trans athlete, medical physicist, and adviser to the IOC on matters of gender and sport. Arguing against the motion is Gregory Brown, Professor of Exercise Science at University of Nebraska at Kearney. QUOTES: JOANNA HARPER “We need to be very careful when we make arguments that trans women athletes are displacing other women, because in a sociological sense they are indeed female." GREGORY BROWN “If you're going to compete, you should have a chance to win. Including a trans woman who runs 12% faster than a cisgender woman makes it very difficult for it to be a meaningful competition.” Sources: BBC, RNZ, Good Morning Britain, Fox News, France24 The host of the Munk Debates is Rudyard Griffiths - @rudyardg.   Tweet your comments about this episode to @munkdebate or comment on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/munkdebates/ To sign up for a weekly email reminder for this podcast, send an email to podcast@munkdebates.com. The New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard looks set to make history after being confirmed as the first transgender athlete to compete at an Olympic Games. Hubbard previously competed in men's events before transitioning in 2013. She is eligible due to a change in International Olympic Committee guidelines on testosterone levels in 2015, and after qualifying requirements were modified by the International Weightlifting Federation. For many campaigners this is a landmark moment for trans people, whose participation at grassroots level sport is shamefully low. Moreover, while there are many different male and female body types, they see elite sport as reflecting society's obsession with gender stereotypes and worry about the implications for anyone who does not meet ‘conventional standards' of femininity. Opponents think that allowing transgirls, who were assigned male at birth, to compete with cis girls is unfair. They argue that, in the vast majority of cases, males are stronger, faster and more powerful than females – if that were not the case we would not have had to segregate sport in the first place. The New Zealand Olympic Committee chief executive, Kereyn Smith, said this complex issue required, “a balance between human rights and fairness on the field of play”. This raises a deeper philosophical question: what is the relationship between rights and rules? And which of these is best placed to achieve fairness – not just in sporting competition but between competing demands? When should rules and laws be challenged and when does a person's sense of their natural rights go too far? With Dr Dafydd Mills Daniel, Joanna Harper, Debbie Hayton and Adam Wagner. Nightclubs are shut, dancing at weddings is not allowed and gigs and festivals are still uncertain. If you want to dance you have to do it at home. Woman's Hour shares your DIY dancing stories and gets tips from Guilty Pleasures DJ, Sean Rowley and Strictly dancer, Amy Dowden. Laurel Hubbard is going to be the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics which starts next month. It's controversial, and she'll make history. She'll be part of the New Zealand women's weightlifting team at Tokyo. Laurel came out as transgender in 2013 - and qualifies for the Olympics on the basis that her testosterone levels have been kept below a certain level for at least a year. But how does a reduction in testosterone affect other aspects of the body - such as haemoglobin levels, muscle mass and strength - that could influence competitive performance? And what research is needed to help inform the balance between inclusivity and meaningful competition in sport? Joanna Harper, a PhD researcher at Loughborough University talks about her latest study. Imagine having your home destroyed, losing your livelihood, and then being intimidated by those now on the land. That's what hundreds of women in Western Uganda say has happened to them; they were violently evicted from their homes to make way for a sugar plantation. In an investigation for Woman's Hour, they've told us they are now left with no option but to live in extremely poor conditions in a makeshift camp, where they face physical and sexual abuse from the plantation workers. To make things worse, many of their husbands have abandoned them while they find employment elsewhere. The UK provides overseas aid for these woman as they fight for compensation for their lost land. But, that UK funding is due to end soon, even though after five years a legal dispute over the land is still unresolved. Two novels - one published tomorrow and one just out in paperback explore the human impact of environmental disaster through the lives of girls and women. They both ask - what is really important to us? What lasts when everything we think we need is stripped away? Eu desejava a terapia hormonal porque precisava me sentir alinhada com a mente e o corpo. Hoje me olho no espelho e me sinto feliz. Eu fiz várias perguntas a mim mesma, e obtive respostas. Me baseio nos regulamentos. E o regulamento do COI estabelece parâmetros hormonais. Eu me sinto mulher e é justo competir com mulheres", insiste. Quero expressar minha grande solidariedade. “Meu filhinho é a minha vida.

For almost a century now the international sporting community has grappled with the question of how to determine who gets to compete in the female sports category.  Fifty years ago the question was answered with humiliating physical exams, but in more recent decades most international sporting federations have embraced a science focused approach. The International Olympic Committee, for example, uses testosterone levels considerably above the female range, not gender, as the main determinant of who gets to compete in the women's elite sport. But last October, World Rugby made international headlines when it announced a very different approach. The governing body's new guidelines prohibit transgender athletes from playing elite women's rugby because of concerns about the safety of players. Advocates for trans athletes say that these guidelines are discriminatory not least because they underestimate the extent to which hormone therapy and surgery diminish the biological advantages of being born male. They also argue that it's dangerous for international sporting bodies to try and regulate the factors that go into superior performance - a complex matter that cannot be reduced to a gender binary. Advocates for women's sport say that for reasons of basic fairness and safety more governing bodies should develop guidelines that bar biological males from participating in female sport. They argue that trans women who are born male enjoy immense physical advantages that are not eliminated through testosterone therapy or surgery. Female athletes argue that the increasing participation of trans women in their division is pushing them off of the podium and undermining the whole reason behind creating a women's sports category in the first place. Arguing for the motion is Linda Blade, former track and field champion, professional track and field coach, and President of Alberta Athletics. Arguing against the motion is Joanna Harper, a trans athlete, adviser to the International Olympic Committee on gender and sport, and author of Sporting Gender: The History, Science, and Stories of Transgender and Intersex Athletes. The British Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies this week reignited the debate about transgender participation in sport, by saying anyone who was born male but now identifies as female should not be allowed to take part in women's sport, because of the physical advantage it brings. Davies denies her remarks are "transphobic" - as did the 18 times Grand Slam tennis champion Martina Navratilova - who originally said participation by male to female transgender athletes in women's sport was a form of 'cheating'. She later apologised for using the word "cheat" - but insisted protections were required for those competitors born female. So where does this debate go next? Joanna Harper, a medical physicist who advises the International Olympic Committee on such issues and is herself a transsexual woman, and Dr Nicola Williams, who is a research scientist specialising in human biology and leads a campaign called Fairplay for Women, debate this controversial topic. It's very rare that Sportshour contains some x-rated content, but a cycling club made up of adult pornstars has lost its British Cycling affiliation - after the governing body said its name might damage the sport's image. Billions of years ago, Mars probably hosted many water features: streams, rivers, gullies, etc. But until recently, water detected on the Red Planet was either locked up in ice or flitting about as a gas in the atmosphere. Now, researchers analyzing radar data from the Mars Express mission have found evidence for an enormous salty lake under the southern polar ice cap of Mars. Daniel Clery joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss how the water was found and how it can still be liquid—despite temperatures and pressures typically inhospitable to water in its liquid form. Read the research. Sarah also talks with science journalist Katherine Kornei about her story on changing athletic performance after gender transition. The feature profiles researcher Joanna Harper on the work she has done to understand the impacts of hormone replacement therapy and testosterone levels in transgender women involved in running and other sports. It turns out within a year of beginning hormone replacement therapy, transgender women plateau at their new performance level and stay in a similar rank with respect to the top performers in the sport. Science Magazine Podcast
Liquid water on Mars, athletic performance in transgender women, and the lost colony of Roanoke

Science Magazine Podcast

Her work has influenced sports oversight bodies like the International Olympic Committee. In this month’s book segment, Jen Golbeck interviews Andrew Lawler about his book The Secret Token: Myth, Obsession, and the Search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Next month’s book will be The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect by Judea Pearl and Dana Mackenzie. In the midst of what some are calling the ugliest election ever, millions of Americans say they're feeling more stressed, anxious and just plain exhausted from it. One therapist even coined a term for this: "election stress disorder." As a remedy, many doctors are recommending meditation. On a special edition of the "10% Happier" podcast, we present a one-of-a-kind roundtable discussion led by our host Dan Harris about best practices for handling stress during the election. Dan is joined in-studio by two meditation teachers, Sharon Salzberg and JoAnna Harper, as well as David Gelles, an author and New York Times business reporter who covers the meditation scene.
