It's time to share more of my story! This episode is a little different, because this time, I'm the one being interviewed on my own show by my dear friend, Edward Dangerfield. When he reached out a few months ago & suggested this, I didn't know exactly why or what I was getting myself into...But something in me felt it was the right thing to do.What followed was a deep exploration into me as a man & as a coach: my motivations, my background & the moments that have shaped me most. In this episode discover about:My time as a paramedic & what facing a near-drowning experience taught me about life & deathThe struggles I see men facing today in our worldMy own interests, passions & the work I dedicate myself toHow I help men create transformation in leadership, relationships & intimacyThis conversation has been more raw & unfiltered than many of my other episodes. And as the podcast evolves, I notice the growing desire in myself to keep these dialogues that way.To keep them deep, authentic & even a little messy...I believe this kind of honesty is a rare currency in our fast-paced, ever-changing world & one that so many of us are longing for.So if you've ever been curious about the man behind "Heart of Man", this is a great place to start.Moving forward, I want to share more dialogues where I am being interviewed, covering conversations that go deeper into my story, my teachings, & my perspectives on masculinity, transformation, relationships & intimacy. If there's a topic you'd like me to dive into in a future episode, let me know in the comments or send me a messageI hope you enjoy this one as always!—Connect with Alex Lehmann: Website: https://www.alexlehmann.co/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@heartofmanpodcastListen to this conversation on Apple Podcasts and leave a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heart-of-man/id1697289478Email: alexlehmanncoaching@gmail.comInterested in working with me 1:1? Edward Dangerfield is back for his 3rd round on "Heart of Man"And while we've explored a wide range of topics in our past conversations, from relationships, to coming home to our bodies, to finding sovereignty and integrity within our own sexual expression, we had yet to come together to explore the core element that first brought us into connection:The breath.Already early on in my work with Edward, I'd often hear him boldly claim,“The way we breathe is the way we live.” And over time, I came to see just how true that statement really is.And while there are many forms of breathwork out there, similar to there being different styles of yoga or meditation—of all the practices I've explored, none have felt more powerful or life-altering than the innovative and emergent technique of Facilitated Breath Repatterning [FBR], which can be seen as a unique synthesis of breathwork and bodywork that I was trained in over 4 years ago. Within the breathwork world it is common knowledge that certain styles of breathing can help us access non-ordinary states of consciousness, giving space for subconscious material to surface and allowing for the completion of incomplete reflexes and the release of unprocessed emotions. In FBR, however, I had yet to find a modality that systematically focuses on both adjusting breathing mechanics and guiding the movement of breath through the body, something Edward has relentlessly refined over a decade of devoted practice. If you consider that we breathe on average 21,000–26,000 times a day, and if we've habitually learned to breathe poorly or in maladaptive ways, this means we're repeating that poor pattern 1000's of times every single day... But if we can shift the way we breathe subconsciously, the effect on our physical, mental and emotional health, can be profound. In my eyes, it's absolutely no understatement to say that this practice has been revolutionary in my life. And while I've continued to learn from different mentors and teachers over the years, I've remained devoted to this practice as the foundational work from which everything else is built. For me, it felt important for us to come together in this way—out of recognition for just how powerful this modality has been for me. I see that a core part of my mission is to support spreading it, and in this conversation, I seek to contribute to that by offering something that does this modality justice. For those who haven't yet experienced it for themselves. I believe this conversation does just that...—Connect With Edward DangerfieldWebsite: https://breathworkbali.com/Instagram (Edward Dangerfield): https://www.instagram.com/edwarddangerfield/Instagram (Breathwork Bali): https://www.instagram.com/breathworkbali/—Connect with Alex Lehmann: Website: https://www.alexlehmann.co/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@heartofmanpodcastListen to this conversation on Apple Podcasts and leave a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heart-of-man/id1697289478Email: alexlehmanncoaching@gmail.comInterested in working with me 1:1? Sara Dangerfield joins the podcast today to discuss her new book Leading Spiritual Hoarders. Dick Foth returns for another session of Back Channel with Foth. Send questions for Back Channel with Foth to aaron.santmyire@agwmafrica.orgTakeaways: Investing deeply in the lives of a select few individuals can yield exponential benefits over time, significantly impacting their growth and development. The concept of spiritual hoarding highlights the importance of sharing one's faith rather than merely accumulating knowledge without action. A healthy church is characterized by members who take ownership of their faith and actively engage with the surrounding community. Walking in obedience to God's calling, even in times of uncertainty, is critical for spiritual leaders and followers alike to grow and serve effectively.

NOTHIN' COMES EASY: The Life of Rodney Dangerfield (April 29, 2025) is the first biography of the "bug-eyed, sweaty, herky-jerky, tie-pulling comedian with the doleful countenance." Dangerfield's indelible beat-down image was played for laughs, but there were sad truths behind his sad-sack persona. TV writer Michael Seth Starr has crafted an immensely entertaining bio of the comedian's slog up the show business ladder. Ten years as a C-level stand-up comedian, he quit the business to sell aluminum siding and paint to keep the lights on. Then he went back to the clubs under an entirely new name, from Jack Roy to Rodney Dangerfield. A career-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show at the ripe age of forty-five would be the lucky break, opening doors to television, movies, and comic fame at last. His catch phrase, "I don't get no respect," underscored his circuitous rise to the top after years of setbacks and grit. "What stood out for me, in authoring this book," writes Starr, '"was Dangerfield's perseverance in the face of such overwhelming odds. I was impressed at how he launched a second comedy career as a man already in his forties and out of the game for a decade. He never abandoned his undeniable urge to get back in the game and to share his seemingly unending reservoir of magical one-liners." At the beginning of his comeback, he began writing jokes for comedians like Jackie Mason and Joey Bishop, in the days before the "no respect" persona was solidified. He worked agentless, making his own deals. And it took him a solid five years to clinch his now celebrated debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. It took another few years of hustling on the circuit before he landed on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, which opened a wealth of doors in Hollywood. Dangerfield's comedy style - a self-mocking angst, the comedy of the perpetual loser - was endearing and universal. He was the schlubby Everyman snubbed by life, finally making it big. Soon Dangerfield would be leaving his mark in films, most famously in Caddyshack and Back to School. He was rebuffed in later years by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - which refused him membership. But Dangerfield had already cemented his place in comedy history as a writer and performer. When he died in 2004, his death made international headlines. Among his pallbearers were George Carlin, Roseanne Barr, Chris Rock, Larry David, Andrew Dice Clay, Jon Lovitz, and Carl Reiner. The book closes with a highly engaging chapter, "Riffs on Rodney," with remembrances of the comic from his peers including Jay Leno, Rita Rudney, Bob Nelson, Robert Wuhl, and Pauly Shore. Fun fact: Sara's sister is married to Stephen's brother -- so Sara and Stephen are basically in-law...in-laws (or something like that). Sara recently published her first book -- Leading Spiritual Hoarders. In this episode, we talk about the importance of being a disciple who makes disciples. We talk about how people become spiritual hoarders by keeping the good news about Jesus to themselves instead of sharing it with others. Sara shares practical advice, like creating a list of 100 people you see throughout a typical week -- to determine if they are following Jesus, not a a follower, or unknown -- in order to be intentional with conversations. Working with Parents in Therapy: A Mentalization-Based Approach, by Norka Malberg, Elliot Jurist, Jordan Bate, and Mark Dangerfield (American Psychological Association, 2023) presents parenthood as a developmental process that can be supported by a mentalization-based model of intervention. The authors first provide an overview of mentalization (i.e., making sense of the mental lives of ourselves and others) and its related concepts, as well as guidance on assessment, formulation, treatment, and supervision from a mentalization framework. They then review challenges and opportunities for parents across development, with rich case examples and vignettes for each developmental phase. Dr. Jurist, who has doctorates in both philosophy and clinical psychology, brings a philosophical lens to our discussion of this book. We talk about mentalization and its development, as well as its role in culture, psychological health, and parenting. About the Guest: Elliot Jurist, Ph.D., Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology and Philosophy at the Graduate Center and The City College of New York, CUNY. From 2004-2013, he served as the Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at CUNY. From 2008-2018, he was the Editor of Psychoanalytic Psychology, the journal of Division 39 of the APA. He is also the editor of a book series, Psychoanalysis and Psychological Science, from Guilford Publications, and author of a book in the series, Minding Emotions: Cultivating Mentalization in Psychotherapy, from the same publisher (the book has been translated into Italian, Chinese and Spanish, and was named best theoretical book in 2019 by the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis). He is the author of Beyond Hegel and Nietzsche: Philosophy, Culture and Agency (MIT Press, 2000) and co-author with Peter Fonagy, George Gergely, and Mary Target of Affect Regulation, Mentalization and the Development of the Self (Other Press, 2002), the latter of which has been translated into five languages and won two book prizes. He is also the co-editor of Mind to Mind: Infant Research, Neuroscience, and Psychoanalysis (Other Press, 2008). His research interests concern mentalization and the role of emotions and emotion regulation in psychotherapy. In 2014, he received the Scholarship Award from Division 39 of the APA, and in 2024, he was given the Leadership award from the same organization. He also writes a Substack newsletter Mental(izing) Health, in which he elaborates on the relevance of mentalization in art, government, culture, philosophy, and other wide-ranging topics, as well as in the mental health world. He is currently writing a book titled When Therapy Met Memoir, which is about references to therapy in contemporary memoirs. In this enlightening episode of Bleeding Daylight, host Rodney Olsen speaks with Sara Dangerfield, pastor, author, and passionate advocate for discipleship. Sara shares insights from her over two decades in ministry, including her experiences serving in oil boom communities where she observed Christians hesitant to share their faith with those who needed it most. Sara discusses practical approaches to everyday evangelism, challenging the notion that we need to know everything before sharing our faith. She emphasizes the importance of one-on-one discipleship, the power of every believer's story, and how simple intentionality can transform casual relationships into opportunities for spiritual conversations. Her book "Leading Spiritual Hoarders: Creating a Culture of Disciples Who Make Disciples" offers church leaders a roadmap for cultivating authentic disciple-making movements. From Amy:This year, more than ever, I wanted to honor Black History Month, at a time when attempts have been made to erase it. I invited my friend Terry Newby to help me do that. As a white woman in America, I loved literature, but I did not grow up reading many marginalized voices. While I knew the name James Baldwin, I couldn't have told you what he stood for. And now? I know him as a Black man and a gay author. And what else? I've admired him interview clips. He feels important. How do I talk about his contributions, beyond a surface level?I'm no expert in Black literature. I'm still very much learning. But this is knowledge that Terry brings.I'm also not German, and I taught those stories for seventeen years, within a historical context. That was not an accident. I was trained by some excellent literature teachers. I learned about the authors as people within their life circumstances in concert with reading their writing. For our six-hour comprehensive graduation exam, we German majors were required to know all relevant information, literary terminology, authors, character names, themes, and dates for all literary movements and a selection of eighty German canonical works. And were required to figure out what "relevant" meant for ourselves. It was brutal. I read some in the German original, some in translation, and met with fellow German majors to compare notes. We passed, all six of us, which is to say: We graduated, none of us with honors in our major, not even my classmate who graduated Summa Cum Laude. I will always remember how Julie Klassen, our beloved mentor, brought us strawberry tea and donuts for a break three hours in. It was more than perfect. She gave us a powerful lesson, better than acing the test, honestly. We didn't know everything we were asked, but we could prepare, come close enough, and celebrate our exploration of writers. This took place in a language that wasn't even mine until I was fourteen. Let that sink in for a moment. Their voices were truly foreign to me. But they came from a context I needed to learn and these were their authentic voices. What a gift. So what I have, really, is the training to ponder the authors I read. Where do they come from, and what does that bring to their writing? What's there for me to take away from the reading? Please understand, I don't mean that an author intended to include all the meaningful connections that show up in their writing. I firmly believe that things land in creative works that a writer never consciously intended to add, but readers see them, because I have experienced this in my own writing. It's magic, really. It's the fullest expression of what it is to be human, and it's essential. The writer's gifts take on a life of their own. But what the writer does, and must do, is gather the courage to show up and publish the words. And readers make meaning. We, the readers, can ask the questions together and individually and trust that it's going to be a good journey, whatever we find.James Baldwin had courage in spades. I've seen him in those video clips and thought of him as another mentor, albeit not one I know well. And when Terry Newby came into my world, we started having conversations that make us both think deeply, as I once did with my German major peers. (You'll hear this in the interview. I pose some questions where it's clear that I'm formulating. I have no idea where we'll end up. Terry laughs and calls me out and responds with his own surprises. Not all of it makes it into the final product. Terry can attest to that.)It's a creative process we capture, just as Baldwin was known to say unexpected things on the video clips that I've seen and admired. This is actually the antidote to that star-student perfectionism that society trains us to reach for. When we don't have to be the expert, this makes room for us to appreciate the experience of all the interesting, diverse voices around us. Terry and I agree: We must do this NOW.I appreciate how James Baldwin led the way, refusing to be someone that he was not, nor a stereotype of the richly gifted person he was. Baldwin didn't parse words. And because he grounded us so fully in his experience, I can extrapolate. I can learn where I stand and maybe take steps in another direction. And I loved seeing where Terry came from as a writer, with Baldwin as one of his key influences.Thank you to Terry for introducing me to James Baldwin as one of the authors that influenced him most as a writer. We ended with a list of Terry's favorite books for Black History Month, or frankly, whenever you want a good read.Terrance Newby's Recommendations:Another Country, by James BaldwinThe Bluest Eye, by Toni MorrisonInvisible Man, by Ralph EllisonNative Son, by Richard WrightBeloved, by Toni MorrisonThink fast: If you enjoyed this conversation and you're in Minnesota, you can see a play by Terry this Friday, February 28 at 7:00. In this episode of the podcast we cover: How to identify those toxic employees. What you do with employees who are constantly negative. The impact these toxic employees can have on the rest of the team. How toxic employees can, in extreme cases, make employers afraid to attend at their own business! The steps you can take to address the issue of a toxic or negative employee. Why you need to address negative or disruptive behaviours early on. Dennis Blair's journey into comedy started by accident—but what a ride it's been. Originally a musician and songwriter, Blair stumbled into stand-up when his musical parodies unexpectedly stole the show. That moment of unexpected laughter led him to open for comedy icons, work alongside legends like Rodney Dangerfield and George Carlin, and write for some of the biggest names in entertainment. With a career spanning decades, Blair shares unforgettable behind-the-scenes stories, from writing Rappin' Rodney to witnessing the quirks of some of Hollywood's most legendary comedians. Episode Highlights: Opening for Legends – Rodney Dangerfield discovered Blair early on, leading to years of touring with him, Joan Rivers, and George Carlin. Behind the Scenes of Easy Money – Writing for Dangerfield meant constant joke revisions and hilarious Hollywood chaos. Rodney's Wildest Moments – From limo rides gone wrong to infamous wardrobe malfunctions, Blair saw it all. From Comedy Clubs to Concert Arenas – Blair's musical comedy act made him the perfect opener for The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, Gloria Estefan, and more. Writing for the Greats – A tag here, a punchline there—Blair even contributed jokes to Carlin's act, an honor for any comedian. Edward Dangerfield is back on the Heart of Man as the first-ever returning guest on the show. For those who need a refresher—or who haven't listened to our first conversation which I'd highly recommend—Edward is a nervous system specialist, teacher, and the visionary founder of the Facilitated Breath Repatterning Technique and Breathwork Bali. On a personal note, Edward has been a long-time mentor of mine and someone I'm incredibly grateful to call a dear friend. Edward's transformative journey began over a decade ago when he survived a near-death experience, finding himself caught in an avalanche. Confronted with the aftermath of Post-Traumatic Stress, he embarked on a journey to discover the wisdom, tools, and practices needed to heal and regulate his nervous system. Along the way, he explored a variety of healing modalities before discovering the profound power of Conscious Connected Breathwork—a practice that would forever change his life. With a deep calling to help others, Edward has dedicated himself to guiding individuals toward feeling at home in their bodies by reclaiming the power of their own breath. After our first interview, many of you reached out expressing interest in one particular topic we touched on — the importance of men cultivating an integrous relationship with their sexual energy, and how that translates over to our relationship to others. In this episode, we dive deeply into this topic, but we don't stop there. Together, Edward and I explore what it truly means to come home to our bodies and address that loss of connection with ourselves. Within this rich dialogue, we examine: What happens when we feel disconnected from our bodies The ways this disconnection affects our lives and relationships and an overview of steps we can take to reclaim a felt sense of being at home within ourselves This was a profound and deeply enriching conversation with one of my favorite humans. It fills me with great joy to share this dialogue with you and offer a glimpse into the many interactions Edward and I have shared over the years... — Connect With Edward Dangerfield Website: https://edwarddangerfield.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edwarddangerfield/ Connect with Alex Lehmann: Website: https://www.alexlehmann.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_/?hl=en Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@HeartofManPodcast/featured Listen to this conversation on Apple Podcasts and leave a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heart-of-man/id1697289478 Email: alexlehmanncoaching@gmail.com Interested in working with me 1:1? Amy and Tom of The Decision 2024 share their thoughts on Trump's resounding win in the recent U.S. election. From polling inaccuracies to middle America's frustrations with Democrats, they outline why the result resonated with voters. Their analysis sheds light on Biden's early exit, the failure of Harris's campaign to gain traction, and how issues like immigration and the economy overshadowed progressive talking points. The duo also discusses the broader cultural implications, including young men gravitating toward centrist values and minorities feeling economically empowered. They believe the election is a turning point for American democracy, offering a chance to rebuild trust and embrace policies that reflect the people's priorities. Tom Ellsworth is an experienced CEO, executive mentor and author. He is also a panel member of the PBD Podcast and also hosts his own podcast – The BizDoc Podcast. Amy Dangerfield is an Australian-born social and political commentator, now based in the United States. She is also in charge of media Distribution at Valuetainment.

From Amy: Terry Newby and I met in the spring of 2023 and found resonance between our writing that led us to trade books. We wanted to explore what it was to write about real people related to us, Terry in historical fiction and plays, me in creative nonfiction, specifically memoir. This is the third and final episode that resulted from that conversation. While Terry and I write different genres, the fact remains that we're writing around similar troublesome themes in American history, a history that is very much still playing out in modern-day patterns. We simply come to our understandings from different vantage points. Mine came through a longtime study of German literature as a lens on challenges closer to home, and I talk about that narrative path. But it wasn't until I read Isabel Wilkerson's Caste that I finally had a name for what I've seen all along in my homeland. Terrance C. We wanted to explore what it was to write about real people related to us, Terry in historical fiction and plays, me in creative nonfiction, specifically memoir. This is the second of three episodes that resulted from that conversation. While Terry writes about real people using fiction to convey larger truths, he wondered what it's like when the people I write about are real people, and my contract with a reader of creative nonfiction says that anything I write about has to have happened. The very fact that I'm writing about any events or relationship already tells you that everything wasn't simply perfect. (Because... boring.) How we treat real people in writing is a question I regularly navigate with writers. Terry and I talk about how I navigate that in my work.Terrance C. We wanted to explore what it was to write about real people related to us, Terry in historical fiction and plays, me in creative nonfiction, specifically memoir. This is the first of three episodes that resulted from that conversation. In Terry's case, the relative was Dangerfield Newby, a newly-emancipated black Virginian determined to buy his wife and children out of slavery, and the first of John Brown's men to be killed in the ill-fated raid on Harper's Ferry. Dangerfield's modern counterpoint is fictitious surgeon Michael Turner, who becomes a surrogate for Terry in tracking his ancestor Dangerfield's path.
