This week Andi and Rina talk to two Moms who have some incredible trans and gender fluid children. They'll talk about what their experience has been like, what do they wish more people understood about their journey and how to navigate what's happening in 2025. This is the first part in a two part series.
So many of us are trying so hard to protect our kids from failure of any kind.Getting it wrong and having regrets is scary! Of course we want to protect our kids from that. But really, when we hover over their homework or swoop in with a plan to fix it when they're struggling, we're protecting ourselves from our anxieties about being a good enough parent. There's kind of no better time to fail than when you're a kid. The stakes are still pretty low. When kids learn how to struggle and get it wrong and fail, it strengthens their ability to move through hard things and builds resilience. To talk more about how we can support our kids through failure, I reached out to Jessica Lahey, who wrote a book that I often refer to in my work called The Gift of Failure. Her book has really shaped the way I view failure and how I encourage others to view failure and Jessica also happens to be the parent of a trans kid, so we'll talk about that experience as well.Check out the full episode to hear about:Why we need to allow kids to get frustrated with tasksWhy adults need to model trying new things and making mistakesHow to give kids opportunities to learn life skills, even when it would be easier for you to just do itHow Jessica's natural openness has been challenged around her much more private daughter's transitionHow Jessica and her family are leaning on their supports and doing work that matters to them in the face of our current climateHow Jessica weighs sharing her pride of her daughter with concerns for her privacy and safetyFind out more about Jessica Lahey:WebsiteNewsletterThe Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can SucceedFind out more about Mackenzie Dunham:Wildheartsociety.orgwildheartsociety.org/downloadsWild Heart Society on FacebookWild Heart Society on InstagramResources:Register for CampDonate to the Queer Community NetworkDifferently Wired: A Parent's Guide to Raising an Atypical Child with Confidence and Hope, Deborah ReberThe Trevor ProjectBe My EyesStand In Pride

A new handbook has been launched to assist BC school trustees who are being targeted with transphobic and homophobic abuse. It outlines some of the ways that school boards are currently under attack and ways to prevent and address this violence. The handbook was written collaboratively by a committee of the group, Lawyers Against Transphobia. We speak with one of the authors, James Chamberlain.

Next year, transgender teens in Kansas will no longer be able to access puberty blockers and hormone treatments for gender-affirming care. One family in Wichita is worried about navigating the changes. Plus, aircraft manufacturing is a big part of the Kansas economy, but new tariffs by the Trump administration have some companies scrambling.

There's a lot to be stressed about right now. We're seeing the dissolution of our democratic norms and ideals before our very eyes. But extremists don't want us thinking about democracy. They want us thinking about the 5 trans kids who wanted to play soccer this year.Just so far this year, over 900 anti-trans bills are under consideration across the country. The majority apply to kids, particularly in school. Some of the laws are frankly terrifying, like one in Florida that requires genital inspections for any kid suspected of being trans. Genital. Inspections. Of Kids. But even anti-trans organizations can't find more than five trans kids playing on girls' sports teams. And at the college level, NCAA president Charlie Baker said that there are fewer than 10 transgender athletes who currently compete in college sports. That's less than 0.002 percent! There's a lot of well-meaning concern for trans kids out there, but doctors are not giving children gender-affirming surgery. A Harvard study in 2019 found zero cases of gender surgery in kids under the age of 12. And for the small number of teenagers who were given surgery (2.1 per 100,000 teens), the vast majority are breast reductions for boys who aren't trans. 97% of gender-affirming surgeries on minors are for boys who were born as boys and identify as boys and just want a smaller chest so they can continue to feel like boys.Somehow that statistic rarely comes up when politicians are out there making speeches and passing bills against trans kids. By scaring people with fake information, politicians can drum up support while passing laws that actually harm Americans – not just trans kids, but all of us.If you're feeling burned out on bad news, or even burned out on empathy, we understand. But this Pride Month, we have to let trans kids know we're paying attention and we care. For a transcript of this episode, please email comms@redwine.blue. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Tennessee's ban on pediatric gender affirming health care with a decision that lowered the bar for establishing its constitutionality and that imperils the rights of young trans patients in the 20 other states with similar laws — all despite the opposition of every major U.S. medical association. Brad Sears, Distinguished Senior Scholar of the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, unpacks the ruling (interviewed by David Hunt). And in NewsWrap: most Australian gay and bisexual men and transgender women who have sex with men will finally be able to donate blood without a three-month-celibacy requirement, funding for suicide prevention programs targeting LGBTQ young people is being eliminated by the Trump administration, a federal judge continues to block the U.S. State Department from denying the option of an “X” gender marker on U.S. passports, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance breaks the record for most blocked accounts on Bluesky in only two days after a transphobic post in support of the Supreme Court's Skrmetti ruling, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Ava Davis and Michael LeBeau (produced by Brian DeShazor). Who should make decisions about what kinds of health care American minors can receive: their parents and doctors, or their state governments? A growing number of states are claiming the right to ban gender-affirming health care for minors—but only if the person being treated is transgender. This month, the Supreme Court will decide if those power grabs are constitutional. Host Alex Lovit is joined by Chase Strangio, one of the lawyers who argued the case in question, United States v. Skrmetti, before the Supreme Court. Their conversation explores the legal reasoning of that case and how American citizens can influence the court and build a society that embraces LGBTQ+ people. Chase Strangio is the codirector of the LGBT & HIV Project at the American Civil Liberties Union. He was one of the advocates who argued the Skrmetti case before the Supreme Court and is the first openly trans lawyer to appear before that court.
Send us a textWe have all been watching the unprecedented attacks on trans healthcare for youth and adults by anti-trans extremists from the local to the federal levels. Today's disagreement is about transgender health care for young people and the future of the trans rights movement.Gender Affirming Care is a method of treating gender dysphoria by affirming a child's gender identity and tailoring medical and social interventions around this identity. This might begin with a social transition and often leads to a medical protocol that involves puberty blockers and then cross sex hormones.Almost a year ago, we had a conversation with leading national clinicians, Dr. Jack Drescher and Dr. Erica Anderson about the state of gender affirming care for young people in the United States. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend it as a helpful primer for this conversation. Since then, a lot has changed in the conversation about trans care for young people. In April 2024, the Cass report came out in the UK. It is one of the most thorough reviews of the evidence base for gender-affirming care. It also called into question the limits of what we know and don't know about care for minors. Right now, 27 states have enacted laws to ban or restrict the practice and the supreme court will be ruling on it later this year. And the United States has a new presidential administration who recently issued the executive order: “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation," which attempts to put forth a national ban on gender affirming care.We ask some important questions around gender affirming care and the trans rights movement. Have trans advocates and medical practitioners overstated the quality of the evidence base for gender-affirming interventions for minors?Brianna Wu is a political commentator and trans rights activist. She is executive director of the progressive Rebellion PAC.Dr. Marci Bowers is a pelvic and gynecological surgeon with more than three decades of experience in healthcare. Dr. Bowers was most recently the president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). She was the organization's first transgender president.Thank you to Brianna and Marci for coming together to have this critical conversation. It's a difficult topic and as you'll hear, a difficult conversation. But we need more of this. We need more people willing to come together and have hard conversations out in the open, and we really appreciate you both. This conversation is pretty “in the weeds” when it comes to youth gender medicine and the state of the research. If you have the context, that's great – you can skip ahead. If you don't, here is a highly efficient glossary:WPATH is the leading trans health organization in the world. Its “Standards of Care” or SOC - have served as the national guidelines for youth gender medicine in most gender clinics. The Standards of Care have evolved a great deal over time: SOC 6, published in 2001, required multiple psychological assessments and a period of Real Life Experience (RLE), living as the preferred gender, before any medical interventions. The most recent SOC, SOC 8, was published in 2022. It removed many of these requirements which activists have described as “gatekeeping.”The Dutch Protocol, also known as “watchful waiting”, is a more conservative alternative to gender-affirming care. It focuses on providing large amounts of psychological support and monitoring during childhood. If the dysphoria continues to persist, then putting young people on puberty blockers and cross sex hormones in late adolescence.Language around gender identity is constantly evolving. Brianna uses the term FTM (or Female to Male) to describe females who transition. For the same demographic, Marci uses “transmasculine.”We also talk about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS).Okay, that will hopefully create a solid foundation. Take a deep breath. Open your mind as far as it's willing to go. And prepare for a different kind of conversation on gender affirming care and the future of the trans rights movement.Recommended Reading and ListeningWPATH Standards of Care Version 8Last year's episode of The Disagreement about gender-affirming care: https://podcasts.apple.com/si/podcast/12-gender-affirming-care-for-children-and-adolescents/id1735027795?i=1000658885782

Should kids be allowed to transition? Does President Trump's executive order go too far? Transgender Republican Blaire White and moderate trans Democrat Brianna Wu join me for this special bonus episode of the Brad vs Everyone podcast to hash it all out.
After a flurry of executive orders, Trump is making good on his promise to go after trans people on day one. This week, Imara takes a look at two of his biggest targets: trans students and military servicemembers. First, she digs into the strategy and impact of Trump's new military ban with Army veteran Patricia King. The two discuss how this may be part of a broader plan to undercut social and economic mobility for trans people and why it could be detrimental to U.S. military preparedness. Next, she's joined by the Executive Director of GLSEN Melanie Willingham-Jaggers to talk through how her organization has been preparing for the fight against anti-trans education policy, including new thinking around coalition building and safety. In December, the U.S. Supreme Court heard a challenge to SB1, a 2023 bill passed by Tennessee's Republican-led state legislature that bans the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender youth. While SCOTUS isn't expected to rule on the case until later this year, parents here in Nashville are already dealing with the impacts of that law and other pieces of anti-trans legislation that have passed in our state. Today, host Marie Cecile Anderson speaks with two local moms, both of whom are raising trans/non-binary/gender-queer kids: Lindsey Patrick-Wright, whose family has chosen to stay in the Nashville area; and Taylor,* who recently relocated due to fears for her child's safety. Are you being personally impacted by a local or national news story? We want to hear from you! Email us. *Taylor is an alias, per the guest's request Want some more City Cast Nashville news? “Ukrainian intelligence sent about 20 experienced drone operators and about 150 first-person-view drones to the rebel headquarters in Idlib, Syria, four to five weeks ago to help Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the leading rebel group based there, the knowledgeable sources said. The aid from Kyiv played only a modest role in overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Western intelligence sources believe. But it was notable as part of a broader Ukrainian effort to strike covertly at Russian operations in the Middle East, Africa and inside Russia itself.” –From the Washington Post In this week's bonus episode, we present a recording from our special Gaslit Nation political salon on Monday, where we honored Syria. This episode offers crucial insights on navigating the complex landscape of Syria's future, highlighting who to trust—and who to be wary of—when it comes to information about the country. We also delve into the disinformation campaigns surrounding Syria and how to prepare for the challenges ahead. Additionally, this week's bonus show features answers to questions from our Democracy Defender-level members and above on voting and homelessness as well as how to protect trans people. Moira walks Adrian through the right wing fixation on trans kids and the way it is reshaping our politics. In early December, the US Supreme Court heard US v. Skrmetti, and is almost certain to uphold a Tennessee law banning most forms of gender-affirming care for minors. In 2016, a trans bathroom ban in North Carolina led to a nationwide outcry and boycotts. Eight years later, laws like Tennessee's SB1 have passed in a majority of US States, and the outcry is comparatively muted. What happened?
Kate, Melissa, and Leah break down United States v. Skrmetti, the Court's big case on gender-affirming care for minors, with the ACLU's Chase Strangio. Chase is one of the lawyers who argued the case–as well as the first known transgender lawyer to argue at the Supreme Court. The hosts then make a pit stop at the always-out-there Fifth Circuit before recapping the other cases the Court heard this week. Follow us on Instagram, Threads, and Bluesky

On Today's Show:Kate Shaw, professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, co-host of the Supreme Court podcast Strict Scrutiny, a contributor with ABC News and a contributing opinion writer with the New York Times, explains why the court is considering a challenge to a Tennessee law that bars the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy.
The United States Supreme Court will be hearing a case regarding transgender medicine for youth this week and our host, Mike Slater, has A LOT of thoughts on this. Could SCOTUS finally end the gender-based madness that's been plaguing our nation for over a decade? Will this help save American children? Listen in and get Mike's hot takes!Following the opener, Slater welcomes Ken Klukowski, Breitbart Senior Legal Contributor, to the show to lend some of his legal expertise to discussions about the Supreme Court, the Hunter Biden pardon, and other important matters related to the laws of our land!
In this special bonus episode, we sit down with first lady Casey DeSantis of Florida to discuss tomorrow's election and the proposed measures on Florida's state ballot. We talk about Florida Amendments 3 and 4, how disastrous they would be for the state of Florida and the well-being of our nation at large, and the amazing work the first lady and Governor DeSantis have been doing in informing their constituents about these measures. Convicted felon Donald Trump relies on a well-worn GOP playbook to scare their voters to the polls: stir up moral panic over LGBTQ people. Moms for Liberty—well-funded by shadowy right-wing interests—are out there banning books and promoting anti-trans, anti-gay laws straight from Viktor Orban's Hungary and Putin's Russia. We might inadvertently feed into their culture war hysteria if we don't step back and see how their disinformation machine works. As Erin Reed points out in her essential guide to our times “Erin in the Morning,” trans care is under attack in half of the country. Meanwhile, the far right stirs up fear, demonizing trans people, especially trans children and their families, just like Karl Rove did with gay marriage in 2004, to secure a second term for war criminal George W. Bush. But trans people have always existed. They're part of human history, brutally erased by colonial powers, according to a must-read report from ABC News in our show notes below. So, what's the antidote to the far-right's moral panic? Call it out for what it is. Protect trans kids. Push back against oligarchs. Remember, this is about basic human rights. As highlighted in Abi Maxwell's poignant memoir One Day I'll Grow Up and Be a Beautiful Woman: A Mother's Story, love and dignity for trans children are crucial to building safer, more compassionate communities for everyone. Maxwell's story focuses on her daughter, Greta, a courageous little girl who, from a very young age, understood she was a girl, even though she was born a boy. The confusion wasn't Greta's—it was the adults around her, including teachers and parents in their small New Hampshire town, who struggled to accept her identity. Maxwell recounts their family's painful journey through relentless bullying and institutional barriers, a journey that mirrors the challenges faced by countless other trans families in America today. Maxwell's memoir isn't just a heart-wrenching tale of a mother fighting for her child; it's also a stark reminder of how disinformation and fearmongering, often driven by far-right extremists, are weaponized to divide us. As we've seen with the rise of groups like Moms for Liberty, the attacks on LGBTQ+ rights—particularly against trans children—are often orchestrated by powerful interests looking to distract and manipulate voters. In our interview with Maxwell, she sheds light on the far-right's disinformation playbook and shares insights on how we can rise above it. It's time to move beyond the hate and fear and build a society that values love, acceptance, and the dignity of all people, no matter their gender identity. Let's start by protecting some of the most vulnerable among us: our trans kids. The song you heard in this week's show is “Doors Are Opening” by The Society of Rockets.
