Send us a textWe have all been watching the unprecedented attacks on trans healthcare for youth and adults by anti-trans extremists from the local to the federal levels. The trans legislation tracker reports an alarming 857 anti-trans bills under consideration in 2025 alone. Many of us, our kids, and our families find ourselves caught in the eye of this storm. Today In the Den, Sara sits down with special guest Alexis Stratton of The Campaign for Southern Equality to discuss the book that Stratton co-authored called Trans Kids, Our Kids: Stories and Resources from the Frontlines of the Movement for Transgender Youth. They explore the importance of supporting and loving and affirming the trans community, and they talk about what we can do to help. Special Guest: Alexis StrattonAlexis Stratton has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of South Carolina, and their stories and essays have appeared in Hayden's Ferry Review, Matador Review, and Oyez Review, among other publications. In 2024, they co authored Trans Kids, Our Kids: Stories and Resources from the Frontlines of the Movement for Transgender Youth with Adam Polaski and Jasmine Beach-Ferrara (Ig Publishing), and in 2025, their book of travel essays, Eating Turtle, was published with Small Harbor Publishing. Alexis has also written for the Rebel Girls book series and podcast and provides grant writing support to several LGBTQ+ nonprofits. Before transitioning to writing full-time, Alexis educated organizations in South Carolina on LGBTQ+ rights, violence prevention, and serving marginalized populations. In this episode, Kyle discusses the shocking video which details the process Andy Stanley's church goes through to train their children's workers to “affirm” any “trans kids” in their children's ministry. Also, in the Quick Hitters segment, he discusses the bipartisan (and feminism-fueled) push to allow proxy voting in Congress, the results of the most expensive statewide judicial race in US history, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez being sentenced to five years in prison, domestic terrorists targeting Tesla drivers, vehicles, and dealerships, RFK Jr.'s fight to keep Americans from buying junk food with food stamps, the sports moment of the year. Today's disagreement is about transgender health care for young people and the future of the trans rights movement.Gender Affirming Care is a method of treating gender dysphoria by affirming a child's gender identity and tailoring medical and social interventions around this identity. This might begin with a social transition and often leads to a medical protocol that involves puberty blockers and then cross sex hormones.Almost a year ago, we had a conversation with leading national clinicians, Dr. Jack Drescher and Dr. Erica Anderson about the state of gender affirming care for young people in the United States. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend it as a helpful primer for this conversation. Since then, a lot has changed in the conversation about trans care for young people. In April 2024, the Cass report came out in the UK. It is one of the most thorough reviews of the evidence base for gender-affirming care. It also called into question the limits of what we know and don't know about care for minors. Right now, 27 states have enacted laws to ban or restrict the practice and the supreme court will be ruling on it later this year. And the United States has a new presidential administration who recently issued the executive order: “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation," which attempts to put forth a national ban on gender affirming care.We ask some important questions around gender affirming care and the trans rights movement. Have trans advocates and medical practitioners overstated the quality of the evidence base for gender-affirming interventions for minors?Brianna Wu is a political commentator and trans rights activist. She is executive director of the progressive Rebellion PAC.Dr. Marci Bowers is a pelvic and gynecological surgeon with more than three decades of experience in healthcare. Dr. Bowers was most recently the president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). She was the organization's first transgender president.Thank you to Brianna and Marci for coming together to have this critical conversation. It's a difficult topic and as you'll hear, a difficult conversation. But we need more of this. We need more people willing to come together and have hard conversations out in the open, and we really appreciate you both. This conversation is pretty “in the weeds” when it comes to youth gender medicine and the state of the research. If you have the context, that's great – you can skip ahead. If you don't, here is a highly efficient glossary:WPATH is the leading trans health organization in the world. Its “Standards of Care” or SOC - have served as the national guidelines for youth gender medicine in most gender clinics. The Standards of Care have evolved a great deal over time: SOC 6, published in 2001, required multiple psychological assessments and a period of Real Life Experience (RLE), living as the preferred gender, before any medical interventions. The most recent SOC, SOC 8, was published in 2022. It removed many of these requirements which activists have described as “gatekeeping.”The Dutch Protocol, also known as “watchful waiting”, is a more conservative alternative to gender-affirming care. It focuses on providing large amounts of psychological support and monitoring during childhood. If the dysphoria continues to persist, then putting young people on puberty blockers and cross sex hormones in late adolescence.Language around gender identity is constantly evolving. Brianna uses the term FTM (or Female to Male) to describe females who transition. For the same demographic, Marci uses “transmasculine.”We also talk about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS).Okay, that will hopefully create a solid foundation. Take a deep breath. Open your mind as far as it's willing to go. And prepare for a different kind of conversation on gender affirming care and the future of the trans rights movement.Recommended Reading and ListeningWPATH Standards of Care Version 8Last year's episode of The Disagreement about gender-affirming care: https://podcasts.apple.com/si/podcast/12-gender-affirming-care-for-children-and-adolescents/id1735027795?i=1000658885782

About 60 people gathered in Shepparton, northern Victoria, just recently as part of a nationwide protest about the Queensland State Government's blindness to the science illustrating why it should stand behind the health and wellbeing of trans kids.In just eight days, four people, Ren Slade, Georgina Poort, Jacq Kiss and Nicole Wells, went from little more than an idea to the reality of a rally of about 60 people.Among the speakers were the parent of a trans person and a founding member of "Transcend Australia", Jo Foster; a trans young person and music performer, Sammi Louise, AKA Lou Baby; and a City of Greater Shepparton councillor, Cr Sam Spinks. The master of ceremonies for the event was Ren Slade, a member of "AusPATH", and Ren encouraged people to support "Project 491".She thanked Elizabeth Capp, the head of campus at Shepparton's "La Trobe University" for allowing the group to use the breezeway facing Shepparton's North St for the gathering. Also, she thanked "Goulburn Valley Pride" for its logistical support and Brad from "Corton Audio".

After a flurry of executive orders, Trump is making good on his promise to go after trans people on day one. This week, Imara takes a look at two of his biggest targets: trans students and military servicemembers. First, she digs into the strategy and impact of Trump's new military ban with Army veteran Patricia King. The two discuss how this may be part of a broader plan to undercut social and economic mobility for trans people and why it could be detrimental to U.S. military preparedness. Next, she's joined by the Executive Director of GLSEN Melanie Willingham-Jaggers to talk through how her organization has been preparing for the fight against anti-trans education policy, including new thinking around coalition building and safety. In December, the U.S. Supreme Court heard a challenge to SB1, a 2023 bill passed by Tennessee's Republican-led state legislature that bans the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender youth. While SCOTUS isn't expected to rule on the case until later this year, parents here in Nashville are already dealing with the impacts of that law and other pieces of anti-trans legislation that have passed in our state. Today, host Marie Cecile Anderson speaks with two local moms, both of whom are raising trans/non-binary/gender-queer kids: Lindsey Patrick-Wright, whose family has chosen to stay in the Nashville area; and Taylor,* who recently relocated due to fears for her child's safety. Are you being personally impacted by a local or national news story? We want to hear from you! Email us. *Taylor is an alias, per the guest's request Want some more City Cast Nashville news? Lies about transgender and nonbinary youth are the basis for the fountain of new laws making it increasingly difficult to access lifesaving pediatric gender-affirming healthcare. While the lies and the laws get most of the attention, TransFamily Support Services founder Kathie Moehlig helps the targeted kids and their families navigate the nightmare (interviewed by David Hunt). And in NewsWrap: Ghana's version of a “no promo homo” law withstands Supreme Court challenges on grounds that they are premature, third Japanese appellate court rules that denying same-gender couples' access to civil marriage is unconstitutional, the Australian Bureau of Statistics gleans initial estimates about the LGBTQ+ community from the results of four recent health surveys, the U.S. Senate approves a bill that bans access to gender-affirming healthcare for the children of military families, a policy that would prevent Montana trans people from changing the gender marker on their government documents is blocked by a judge pending litigation, Sir Elton John gladly accepts a new title from Stephen Colbert, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by David Hunt and Melanie Keller (produced by Brian DeShazor). “Ukrainian intelligence sent about 20 experienced drone operators and about 150 first-person-view drones to the rebel headquarters in Idlib, Syria, four to five weeks ago to help Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the leading rebel group based there, the knowledgeable sources said. The aid from Kyiv played only a modest role in overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Western intelligence sources believe. But it was notable as part of a broader Ukrainian effort to strike covertly at Russian operations in the Middle East, Africa and inside Russia itself.” –From the Washington Post In this week's bonus episode, we present a recording from our special Gaslit Nation political salon on Monday, where we honored Syria. Moira walks Adrian through the right wing fixation on trans kids and the way it is reshaping our politics. In early December, the US Supreme Court heard US v. Skrmetti, and is almost certain to uphold a Tennessee law banning most forms of gender-affirming care for minors. In 2016, a trans bathroom ban in North Carolina led to a nationwide outcry and boycotts. Eight years later, laws like Tennessee's SB1 have passed in a majority of US States, and the outcry is comparatively muted. What happened?
Kate, Melissa, and Leah break down United States v. Skrmetti, the Court's big case on gender-affirming care for minors, with the ACLU's Chase Strangio. Chase is one of the lawyers who argued the case–as well as the first known transgender lawyer to argue at the Supreme Court. The hosts then make a pit stop at the always-out-there Fifth Circuit before recapping the other cases the Court heard this week. Follow us on Instagram, Threads, and Bluesky

Alexis Stratton talks about the new book “Trans Kids, Our Kids” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ co-authored with Adam Polaski and Rev.Jasmine Beach-Ferrara from the Campaign for Southern Equality and released by Ig Publishing. In these unprecedented times “Trans Kids, Our Kids” provides a narrative look into the challenges facing our transgender young people. This is especially crucial after the recent GOP presidential campaign distorted and targeted transgender issues to regain control of the White House. The new book provides a truthful blueprint addressing trans youth issues by taking a storytelling approach in capturing how people all across the country are meeting the moment to support, protect and live in solidarity with transgender youth and their families. The book is based on more than 50 interviews with transgender youth, their parents and the medical providers, advocates and faith leaders who are leading the fight against the wave of discriminatory legislation that has flooded statehouses since 2022. One primary focus of “Trans Kids, Our Kids” is the attack on trans youth's access to gender-affirming care. Less than two years ago there weren't any states that had such bans in effect. Currently there are now 26 states that have bans or restricted transgender youth from accessing hormone therapy with the issue coming before the Supreme Court in the case United States v. Skrmetti with oral arguments on December 4th. Campaign for Southern Equality (CSE) through their Trans Youth Emergency Project have supported more than 1,000 families of transgender youth in navigating healthcare bans. Since the launch of the project in 2023 CSE has distributed more than $600,000 in direct emergency grants to families and community partners across 26 states. We talked to Alexis about what they hope to accomplish with “Trans Kids, Our Kids” and their spin on our LGBTQ issues. Alexis Stratton has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. and their stories and essays have appeared in storySouth, Hayden's Ferry Review, Matador Review and Oyez Review among other publications. In 2022 Alexis' chapbook “Anywhere Else but Here” was published by Fjords Review and in 2023 won the James River Writers' and Richmond Magazine's Best Unpublished Novel Contest. Alexis lives in Richmond, VA. and works as a freelance writer and an LGBTQ rights advocate. Campaign for Southern Equality is based in Asheville, NC. promoting full LGBTQ equality across the South. Their work is rooted in commitments to equity in race, gender and class. Through their Trans Youth Emergency Project they support families of trans youth who are impacted by anti-transgender healthcare bans in the South. All royalties from book sales of “Trans Kids, Our Kids” will benefit this project. For More Info… LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Part 2 of our dive into politics, and there's two big asks for cis people who truly want to help. But this might get uncomfortable, because we're going to talk about the way our political system operates in the United States, and that means realizing you can't wait for perfection or moral purity. Trans lives are on the line (as are so many others), and we must protect each other as best we can. And that sometimes means voting for someone you may not like. Convicted felon Donald Trump relies on a well-worn GOP playbook to scare their voters to the polls: stir up moral panic over LGBTQ people. Moms for Liberty—well-funded by shadowy right-wing interests—are out there banning books and promoting anti-trans, anti-gay laws straight from Viktor Orban's Hungary and Putin's Russia. We might inadvertently feed into their culture war hysteria if we don't step back and see how their disinformation machine works. As Erin Reed points out in her essential guide to our times “Erin in the Morning,” trans care is under attack in half of the country. Meanwhile, the far right stirs up fear, demonizing trans people, especially trans children and their families, just like Karl Rove did with gay marriage in 2004, to secure a second term for war criminal George W. Bush. But trans people have always existed. They're part of human history, brutally erased by colonial powers, according to a must-read report from ABC News in our show notes below. So, what's the antidote to the far-right's moral panic? Call it out for what it is. Protect trans kids. Push back against oligarchs. Remember, this is about basic human rights. As highlighted in Abi Maxwell's poignant memoir One Day I'll Grow Up and Be a Beautiful Woman: A Mother's Story, love and dignity for trans children are crucial to building safer, more compassionate communities for everyone. Maxwell's story focuses on her daughter, Greta, a courageous little girl who, from a very young age, understood she was a girl, even though she was born a boy. The confusion wasn't Greta's—it was the adults around her, including teachers and parents in their small New Hampshire town, who struggled to accept her identity. Maxwell recounts their family's painful journey through relentless bullying and institutional barriers, a journey that mirrors the challenges faced by countless other trans families in America today. Maxwell's memoir isn't just a heart-wrenching tale of a mother fighting for her child; it's also a stark reminder of how disinformation and fearmongering, often driven by far-right extremists, are weaponized to divide us. As we've seen with the rise of groups like Moms for Liberty, the attacks on LGBTQ+ rights—particularly against trans children—are often orchestrated by powerful interests looking to distract and manipulate voters. In our interview with Maxwell, she sheds light on the far-right's disinformation playbook and shares insights on how we can rise above it. It's time to move beyond the hate and fear and build a society that values love, acceptance, and the dignity of all people, no matter their gender identity. Today's podcast begins with host Mike Slater looking at the leftist push to get voters registered in the most unlikely of places...like insane asylums? It might sound too far-fetched to be true, but it is and you'll want to hear Slater's commentary on this literal insanity that's taking place with our elections!Following that, Minnesota State Rep. Harry Niska (R-District 31A) joins the show to talk to Mike about his state's governor's push to strip parents of their rights and allow children to be subjected to any number of horrific things in the name of being accepting of "transgenderism". Trust us when we say that you'll want to know all about the bills that Tim Walz has passed and wants to pass in the future, especially if the Democrats think that's a good VP pick!

Parenting gender diverse children can be a challenging and rewarding journey, filled with moments of growth and understanding. By prioritizing their mental health, affirming their identities, and safeguarding their well-being, we empower them to embrace their authentic selves and navigate the world with resilience and courage. In this episode of "Moms for Trans Kids," the guests share their personal journeys of affirming and supporting their gender-diverse children. The discussion centers around the importance of listening to learn from and advocate for their kids. Topics such as deadnaming, safety, mental health, and the need for parental support in the LGBTQ+ community are touched upon. The guests emphasize the significance of creating safe spaces, practicing discernment, and offering unconditional love and acceptance to their children. Parents should listen to learn from their gender-diverse children and advocate for their safety and mental well-being. Deadnaming and misgendering can cause discomfort and distress for trans individuals, highlighting the importance of using their chosen name and pronouns. Supporting LGBTQ+ youth in finding their tribe while emphasizing discernment and safety is crucial for their well-being. Offering grace, validation, and a safe space can help foster trust and open communication between parents and their gender-diverse children. Parental acceptance, support, and understanding play a critical role in the mental health and happiness of LGBTQ+ individuals. Health care for trans kids has been in the spotlight, with battles over what the science says and tons of U.S. states restricting the care that children can get. And then there's a new report out of the UK, called the Cass Review, saying that a bunch of the evidence that doctors have been relying on to treat trans kids is “remarkably weak.” So what's going on here? What is the best health care for trans kids? We sort through the science with Professor Stephen Russell, Dr. Cal Horton, and Dr. Ada Cheung. We also talk about the reactions to Trump's victory in Iowa, including Beth Moore's commentary on Trump voters. We take a look at the three major candidates and their views on abortion and transgender ideology and explain why it's so important to vote for an actual conservative who is consistently standing up for truth.
