They cover all types of topics such as: What are some common correlations that are made in regards to porn viewing research that are completely inaccurate? Are we aware that those who view porn tend to be more egalitarian in their relationships? Why does it matter if we call problematic behavior by the right name (i.e. addiction vs. compulsivity vs. out-of-control, etc.)? Did you know that women respond to erotica in similar ways as men do and even share similar sexual tastes? Did you know that people who view erotic films report having increased desire for sexual activity with their spouse/partner? Objectification of women is definitely a problem, but violence? Not so much. Did you know that those who report having “out of control” behavior with porn viewing actually watch the same or less than those who don't identify with having a problem? And that research is now showing that those who see their behavior as problematic tend to come from religious or conservative backgrounds? Get up to date with what we think is science versus what is actually science in regards to positives and negatives that can come from porn/erotic viewing. Nicole Prause obtained her PhD at Indiana University with joint supervision from The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction in 2007. Her concentrations were in neuroscience and statistics. She completed her APA/APPIC clinical internship at the Boston Consortium. The growing anti-porn movement has fueled the rise of an entire industry centered around selling people on the idea of masturbatory abstinence. Often referred to as a “reboot,” these programs encourage men to forego self-pleasure and orgasm for prolonged periods of time, which they say is necessary to reset the brain and boost testosterone. But do these programs work as advertised? This is the second installment in a 4-part series on the science of porn and, today, we're going to go inside the world of porn addiction recovery programs. I'm joined once again by Dr. Nicole Prause, a licensed psychologist and sex researcher, founder of the sexual biotechnology company Liberos, and a scientist in the Department of Medicine at UCLA. Nicole has studied the experiences of hundreds of men who tried reboot programs, and the results suggest that these programs may actually be causing harm and taking a toll on men's mental health. Some of the topics we discuss include: Where is the rise in anti-porn sentiment coming from? What might a typical reboot program look like? What does a "relapse" mean in the context of a reboot? How common is this kind of relapse? How do men engaged in reboot programs fare in terms of their mental health and sexual function? Why are there so many discrepant findings in the scientific literature about pornography's effects? Why shouldn't we think of porn as addictive? How should we think of it instead? The Myth of the “Relationship Spark” with Logan Ury, featuring guest appearance by Christina Gravert, PhD [Republish]

First impressions matter but when it comes to dating, don't get blown away by the myth of the "relationship spark". Some people can instead be characterized as a "slow burn"; a person who you like more and more each time. We revisit an episode with dating coach, behavioral scientist and author of How Not To Die Alone, Logan Ury about how to date successfully. Logan Ury studied psychology at Harvard, was a TED Fellow, then became a behavioral scientist at Google, where she ran Google's behavioral science team – which we now know as The Irrational Lab. She became a dating coach and is currently the Director of Relationship Science at the dating app Hinge, where she leads a research team dedicated to helping people find love. Her work has appeared in The New York Times and The Atlantic, among a variety of media outlets, including HBO and the BBC.  Aside from those cool things, we wanted to talk to her because she is the author of How To Not Die Alone. In our conversation with Logan, which was originally recorded in early 2021, we talk about the challenges people face in getting prepared for dating, making the most of their dating experiences, and maintaining great relationships once they've landed in one. She shared her insights into how to overcome some of the common hurdles and to make the most out of each phase of the dating life. We had an interesting discussion about why moving from ‘romanticizer' or ‘maximizer' to ‘satisficer' can make a big difference in your relationships (and in life). We talk about the Monet Effect and how we need to work hard to overcome some of our biggest biases – like the fundamental attribution error and negativity bias. She was also kind enough to share a little bit about her communal living conditions and her recommendation that we all need more significant others – OSO's – in these turbulent times. NOTE #1: The “F” word features prominently in our conversation since it's in the title of one of her book's chapters. NOTE #2: Christina Gravert joined for our Grooving Session as our first-ever Grooving Partner, and you'll hear her in the introduction, as well. We're pleased that our good friend was named by Forbes magazine as one of the top behavioral scientists you ought to know. Christina teaches Economics at the University of Copenhagen, is a co-founder of Impactually, a behavioral consultancy, she has been a guest on Behavioral Grooves (episode 16 on creating a Nudge-A-Thon), and was a speaker at Nudge. It North 2021.   © 2023 Behavioral Grooves   Links Logan Ury: https://www.loganury.com/ “How to Not Die Alone”: https://amzn.to/3JSmDUz  Ira Glass: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Glass Dan Ariely: https://danariely.com/ Esther Perel: https://www.estherperel.com/ John Gottman, The Gottman Institute: https://www.gottman.com/ Eli Finkel: https://elifinkel.com/ Daniel Gilbert: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Gilbert_(psychologist) Jane Ebert: https://www.brandeis.edu/facultyguide/person.html?emplid=0fd6834b65b0eddec69f2ab77539fd341d63b270 Alain De Botton “School of Life”: https://www.theschooloflife.com/about-us/faculty/alain-de-botton/ Reiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiki “Algorithms to Live By”: https://algorithmstoliveby.com/ John Nash “A Beautiful Mind”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Forbes_Nash_Jr. Nicole Prause: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicole_Prause 36 Questions That Lead to Love: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/09/style/no-37-big-wedding-or-small.html The School of Life books: https://www.theschooloflife.com/shop/us/books/ Shelley Archambeau – Episode 204: https://behavioralgrooves.com/episode/how-shelley-archambeau-flies-like-an-eagle/ Christina Gravert – Episode 16: https://behavioralgrooves.com/episode/nudge-a-thon-with-dr-christina-gravert/ Christina Gravert, “Online Dating Like a Game Theorist”: https://behavioralscientist.org/online-dating-like-a-game-theorist/ Christina Gravert – Impactually: https://impactually.se/ “10 Behavioral Scientists You Should Know”: https://www.forbes.com/sites/alineholzwarth/2020/10/29/10-behavioral-scientists-you-should-know/?sh=36ad80b442e0    Musical Links “Hamilton” soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPSWZUExZ8M  Chance the Rapper “Coloring Book”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeChAs-bI3A  Bush “Glycerine”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvXbHN5Gijw%C2%A0

I got the opportunity to speak with Dr. Nicole Prause about this important topic that affects so many people coming from high-demand and conservative religious communities. She has been paramount in helping my understanding throughout my career, especially in the dangers of conceptualizing sexuality through an "addictions" lens. She has some new research out where they looked at online "support groups," run by unqualified people that, not only offer tons of misinformation and unrealistic expectations for young men but also, incite violence.   Dr. Nicole Prause is a licensed psychologist and a neuroscientist researching human sexual behavior and the physiology of sexual response. Her research has played a pivotal role in helping us understand that hypersexaulity might be better understood as a "non-pathological variation of high sexual desire", rather than an addiction. She is also the founder of Liberos LLC, an independent research institute. She states on the Liberos site: “After ten years of research at universities, I found myself caught between the prohibitions of my institutions on crucial research and the free-for-all poor science behind products in the marketplace. There must be a compromise that uses strong science to inform sexual health for the public. Liberos is my answer.” Dr. Prause is currently back at UCLA at the department of medicine as a senior statistician. Please consider donating to keep this podcast going at natashahelfer.com. Candice welcomes Dr. Nicole Prause, a neuroscientist researching human sexual behavior, addiction, and the physiology of sexual response. We talk all things sex: porn, “addiction”, women who watch porn, and how sex and porn can benefit people in more ways than we can imagine.Sex & Porn AddictionThere's no doubt that some people are more addicted to sex and porn than others, but the question as a clinician is to ask: “How do I treat this?”. One model could be addiction and some of the things that are required to call some things as an addiction would be developing tolerance around the stimulus or behavior, Curie activity, having negative consequences as a result of the behavior. Each of these will be undergone and have disproven some aspects of them in science, called falsification. An addiction has to fulfill all criteria otherwise it's not an addiction. Having shame because of conservative upbringings, having a high sex drive and not being able to complete everyday tasks and relationships, leading up to impulsive and compulsive disorders are not the same as addiction. In the field of science, no scientist has labelled porn as addictive and most of this stigma is around public perception.Women Who Watch Porn Women are the biggest spenders in OnlyFans and women who watch porn are seen to have positive effects such as improved sexual satisfaction, increased orgasm consistency, and higher relationship satisfaction. The big gender difference is that in sex clinics, the most common problem women report is low desire which has been going on for 40 years and watching pornography could be one of the ways to spark drive. Sex Research on Trauma Healing and Sexual ReframingPTSD is affective dampening, which is when a person shuts their emotions off because of the fear that their traumatic experience will happen again. Through orgasm meditation, the idea is if there's a way to get victims to have intense emotional experiences that are safe where they can start to experience feelings of intensity again in a way that isn't frightening so they can do exposures. This allows them to feel high intensity but a positive, pleasurable thing which can make their affective range broaden out again. What does it really mean to have an orgasm? Different people—and even different scientists—define “orgasm” in different ways, which makes this a surprisingly difficult subject to study scientifically. So how do you measure when someone has an orgasm in a research lab? For this episode, I spoke to an orgasm researcher who has figured out how to do it. Her methods and findings are absolutely fascinating and will change everything you think you know about orgasms! My guest today is Dr. Nicole Prause, a licensed psychologist and sex researcher who founded the sexual biotechnology company Liberos. She is a former Kinsey Institute trainee and has published an extensive body of research on the neuroscience and psychophysiology of sex. Some of the topics we explore in this episode include: What technology do you need to study orgasms scientifically? Orgasms have both a physiological and a psychological component—but they don't always line up in the same way for everyone. So what does it mean when someone experiences one but not the other? What does it actually mean to have multiple orgasms? Are we talking back-to-back orgasms with continued sexual stimulation? Can you take breaks? How much time can pass between each orgasm for it to count as “multiple?” Is there really a gender difference in the ability to have multiple orgasms? (The answer may surprise you!) Some people get sick every time they orgasm. What causes this post-orgasmic illness syndrome? Are there really different “types” of orgasms, or are all orgasms technically the same process? What happens inside the brain during an orgasm? For people who have trouble orgasming, what can they do about it? This podcast was made on Zencastr. Logan Ury studied psychology at Harvard, was a TED Fellow, then became a behavioral scientist at Google, where she ran Google’s behavioral science team – which we now know as The Irrational Lab. She became a dating coach and is currently the Director of Relationship Science at the dating app Hinge, where she leads a research team dedicated to helping people find love. Her work has appeared in The New York Times and The Atlantic, among a variety of media outlets, including HBO and the BBC. And you should note that she’s a featured speaker at SXSW 2021. Aside from those cool things, we wanted to talk to her because she is the author of How To Not Die Alone. In our conversation with Logan, we talked about the challenges people face in getting prepared for dating, making the most of their dating experiences, and maintaining great relationships once they’ve landed in one. She shared her insights into how to overcome some of the common hurdles and to make the most out of each phase of the dating life. We had an interesting discussion about why moving from ‘romanticizer’ or ‘maximizer’ to ‘satisficer’ can make a big difference in your relationships (and in life). We talked about the Monet Effect and how we need to work hard to overcome some of our biggest biases – like the fundamental attribution error and negativity bias. She was also kind enough to share a little bit about her communal living conditions and her recommendation that we all need more significant others – OSO’s – in these turbulent times. NOTE #1: The “F” word features prominently in our conversation since it’s in the title of one of her book’s chapters. NOTE #2: Christina Gravert joined for our Grooving Session as our first-ever Grooving Partner, and you’ll hear her in the introduction, as well. We’re pleased that our good friend was named by Forbes magazine as one of the top behavioral scientists you ought to know. Christina teaches Economics at the University of Copenhagen, is a co-founder of Impactually, a behavioral consultancy, she has been a guest on Behavioral Grooves (episode 16 on creating a Nudge-A-Thon), and was a speaker at Nudge. It North 2021. © 2021 Behavioral Grooves   Links Logan Ury: https://www.loganury.com/ “How to Not Die Alone”: https://www.loganury.com/book Ira Glass: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Glass Dan Ariely: https://danariely.com/ Esther Perel: https://www.estherperel.com/ John Gottman, The Gottman Institute: https://www.gottman.com/ Eli Finkel: https://elifinkel.com/ Daniel Gilbert: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Gilbert_(psychologist) Jane Ebert: https://www.brandeis.edu/facultyguide/person.html?emplid=0fd6834b65b0eddec69f2ab77539fd341d63b270 Alain De Botton “School of Life”: https://www.theschooloflife.com/about-us/faculty/alain-de-botton/ Reiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiki “Algorithms to Live By”: https://algorithmstoliveby.com/ John Nash “A Beautiful Mind”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Forbes_Nash_Jr. Nicole Prause: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicole_Prause 36 Questions That Lead to Love: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/09/style/no-37-big-wedding-or-small.html The School of Life books: https://www.theschooloflife.com/shop/us/books/ Shelley Archambeau – Episode 204: https://behavioralgrooves.com/episode/how-shelley-archambeau-flies-like-an-eagle/ Christina Gravert – Episode 16: https://behavioralgrooves.com/episode/nudge-a-thon-with-dr-christina-gravert/ Christina Gravert, “Online Dating Like a Game Theorist”: https://behavioralscientist.org/online-dating-like-a-game-theorist/ Christina Gravert – Impactually: https://impactually.se/ “10 Behavioral Scientists You Should Know”: https://www.forbes.com/sites/alineholzwarth/2020/10/29/10-behavioral-scientists-you-should-know/?sh=36ad80b442e0   Musical Links “Hamilton” soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPSWZUExZ8M Chance the Rapper “Coloring Book”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeChAs-bI3A Bush “Glycerine”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvXbHN5Gijw

Real research on sexual stimulation! By real, we mean research under strict reproducible scientific guidelines. Not for the purpose of reproduction but for pleasure, physical health, and mental health. Our first question was "Why weren't apart of their study?". That was a part of our conversation with Nicole Prause, Ph.D. She is a sexual psychophysiologist, with specialized training in neuroscience, statistics, and addictions and has worked with the Kinsey Institute, World Health Organization, and Harvard University. Her research was enlightening on the effects of clitoral stimulation in relation to feelings of closeness and the need to have a romantic connection. Science says you don't need a romantic connection to reap these benefits of a good orgasm. This led to our discovery that science has proven a connection between arousal and hunger. Imagine a diet where sexual arousal was a recommended remedy for dealing with hunger! You gotta love science! She shared her personal experiences on the discrimination and persecution against the doctors and researchers who study sex. There is a real danger, professionally and physically, caused by unfounded conspiracy theories and intensional fake news. This was shocking that in the 21st century, there are still groups that believe some knowledge forbidden. Is sex addiction a real thing? What does the research say about problematic sexual behaviors? What does research say about pornography? The word addiction and the word sex are put together a lot. It’s used in popular culture often, but we didn’t get trained that it's an addiction. There’s a reason for that, it’s not an addiction. That’s what science tells us. Today’s episode is an interview with an expert in the field of sexual science, Dr. Nicole Prause.

Welcome to the Mikhaila Peterson Podcast. This is a bit of a different style episode. A couple of months ago there was big news about PornHub. Visa and Mastercard dropped them for apparently hosting child pornography PornHub removed ten million videos. I decided to have a couple of people on to discuss whether or not porn and sex work is dangerous, harmful, and addictive or whether it’s a natural thing that should be decriminalized and even encouraged. I had no idea there is a war going on between pro-porn and anti-porn people and this PornHub case shed a lot of light on that. I thought it would be nice to see opposing views on a controversial topic given the fact that we are usually isolated from opposing views, which is causing serious problems at the moment.  I spoke first with Haley McNamara, VP at the National Centre for Sexual Exploitation. Haley’s nonprofit is largely responsible for bringing this issue with PornHub and child pornography into the public eye and getting over ten million videos for unverified users removed in September 2020. The second half of the episode is with Dr. Nicole Prause, a neuroscientist who researches human sexual behavior, addiction, and the physiology of sexual response. She’s also the founder of Libros LLC, an independent research institute. These people have pretty much completely opposing views, so it was a very interesting contrast of conversations. This is the first episode like this. Let me know if you find this opposing viewpoint type of podcast interesting, I may do more of these episodes. - This episode was sponsored by Ground News. The impetus for the initial opinion piece was the propriety of allowing the group “Fight the New Drug” (FTND) to offer presentations in public school assemblies or other gathering types, especially since the science behind the claims FTND makes about pornography as “addicting” is not credible (at least that is the claim of the writers). Leaders of FTND and others who work with clients under the “pornography addiction” model and the therapies it suggests wrote a response challenging the claims made in the first Op-ed, linking to studies they say supports all the arguments they make or that challenge studies that underlie the thinking of those who oppose the “addiction” model. It is a fascinating back-and-forth that highlights a major division within helping communities with regard to the effects of pornography upon the human brain and body, and the best approach(es) to take when someone comes to a therapist for help with a level of pornography usage they feel is is problematic. In this two-part episode, two of the authors of the first Op-ed, Natasha Helfer Parker and Kristin Hodson (both Mormon and certified sex therapists), along with neuroscientist and sex researcher Dr. Nicole Prause and counselor and sex therapist Jay Blevins (who are both non-LDS), join Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon for a wide-ranging discussion of the research surrounding the effects of pornography and if it shows the markers typically associated with “addiction,” and why this group feels the model fails—not only scientifically but with the therapies that arise out of this framing doing more harm than good. The host and panel discuss the influence of religious framings on both therapists and clients that are likely very much at play in preferring the “addiction” model, what other factors might be at play in continuing to use this language and claims about pornography usage, the propriety of it being presented in schools that allow no teachings whatsoever about sexuality within the curriculum yet still allow scare-inducing warnings against pornography (which, in itself, seems incomprehensible apart from understanding healthy sexuality first), along with various other models for assisting those who self-report as pornography or sex “addicts”—and why they feel these other framings and therapies yield better results. We get into the internal clitoris, vasocongestion, skene's glands, the mystery of sexual vaginal lubrication, and the most sensitive areas of the clitoral glans. Natasha Helfer Parker interviews Dr. Nicole Prause, founder of the Sexual Psychophysiology and Affective Neuroscience (SPAN) Laboratory, in regards to the research she has personally done (and is aware of) concerning our relationships with pornography and erotic viewing materials. Did you know that those who report having “out of control” behavior with porn viewing actually watch the same or less than those who don’t identify with having a problem? And that research is now showing that those who see their behavior as problematic tend to come from religious or conservative backgrounds? Get up to date with what we think is science versus what is actually science in regards to positives and negatives that can come from porn/erotic viewing.   Nicole Prause obtained her PhD at Indiana University with joint supervision from The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction in 2007. The neuroscience of orgasm is relatively uncharted territory, with some of the most groundbreaking developments being led by Dr. Nicole Prause. As the founder of the Liberos Center -- a sexual biotechnology company -- Nikki has used the study of sex as a gateway for studying everything from clinical depression to relationships to branding. Both a neuroscientist and technology inventor, she has a long history of inventing her own tools and processes to advance her craft. From hacking Arduino circuit boards, to developing projection methodologies for performance artists, her career has been fueled by a combination brains, curiosity, and a desire to genuinely help her clients. On this installment of the show, the good doctor breaks down her craft, her experience with motorcycles and fire spinning, and debunks a lot of cultural myths about sex and psychology.

Where do we stand as a society on actual scientific research on sexuality? There are three key moments in history that mark genuine milestones in the scientific research of sexuality. First was in 1947, when Alfred Kinsey founded the institute for Sex Research at Indiana University provoking controversy at the time. He is best known for the Kinsey scale which rates ones sexual orientation. The second was in 1957, when William Masters and Virginia Johnson pioneered research into the nature of human sexual response and diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders and dysfunctions. They recorded some of the first laboratory data on the anatomy and physiology of human sexual response based on direct observation of 382 women and 312 men in what is estimated to be "10,000 complete cycles of sexual response". Their findings on the nature of female sexual arousal and orgasms dispelled many long-standing misconceptions. The third was in 2015, when Nicole Prause Ph.D. founded Liberos a sexual biotechnology company that researches sexual psychophysiology and affective neuroscience using state of the art technology. They study sexual addictions, orgasm physiology and biosignal processing. They measure brainwaves during sex using sophisticated headgear with wires going everywhere and measure contractions in both men and women during orgasms utilizing anal probes. I know what you’re thinking right now….who else uses anal probes?….Aliens…..and aliens have spaceships…..and spaceships are cool. So Nicole Prause must be cool…..and you would be right….she’s SUPER cool. On our show today, we interview Nicole Prause, Ph.D. (aka Orgasm Warrior) a neuroscientist that founded Liberos, LLC to research human sexual behavior, addiction and the physiology of sexual response. Dr. Prause earned her doctorate at Indiana University with joint supervision by the Kinsey Institude for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction. She was lead author on a study that was the first to apply brain stimulation to alter sexual responsiveness. She also conducted an exceedingly thorough study on women’s preference on penis size. That got your attention. That’s right boys….she knows what women really want in a man….if you know what I mean. Dr. Prause is on the cutting edge of sexual research and asking important questions that have never been asked before. You are going to love this interview with the “Orgasm Warrior” herself, as we explore the science of sex.www.liberoscenter.com

Welcome to Episode 11, where NICOLE PRAUSE and I discuss, among other things, the scientific study of orgasm, the pernicious effects of social discomfort about sex on those trying to study it, and her journey from sleepy little Beaumont, Texas to sparkly, cutting-edge Los Angeles. Life hasn’t always been easy for Nikky, but that’s just made her scrappy—a determined problem solver.    Nikky Prause is an expert psychophysiologist and neuroscientist. She trained among other places at the KINSEY INSTITUTE for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, at Indiana University in Bloomington. She’s an associate research scientist at UCLA and a licensed clinical psychologist. Recently, she founded LIBEROS, LLC, which is her very own private research institute and biotech company.   I don’t have a Nicole Prause book to link to here, but I do have things for you to check out if you’re interested in learning more (see links below).    And I do want to say this: Nicole Prause is doing vitally important work—work that for all kinds of bad reasons has been made unreasonably difficult for her to do. She has been subject to threats, lies, attempts to derail her career…it goes on and on. So she has fashioned an unorthodox approach that seeks to overcome the various and relentless impediments she’s had to face. This makes me think at least two things: 1) She really is going to win these battles. Don’t let her good humor and warmth deceive you—she’s a real fighter. 2) We owe Nikky a tremendous debt of gratitude. She’s fighting to do her work, yes, but when the ultimate accounting is done—when we realize the fruits of her labor—we’ll realize that WE are the real beneficiaries.    So thanks Nikky. Keep up the fight. We’re standing with you.    And here are those links I promised! The past ten days featured two opposing Op-Eds in the Salt Lake Tribune focusing on the issue of pornography, and especially if an “addiction” model (“pornography is highly addicting”) is appropriate to be taught in high school settings. Nicole Prause and sex therapist Jay Blevins (who are both non-LDS), join Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon for a wide-ranging discussion of the research surrounding the effects of pornography and if it shows the markers typically associated with “addiction,” and why this group feels the model fails—not only scientifically but with the therapies that arise out of this framing doing more harm than good. Plus so much more! In the future, as Mormon Matters can gather a panel of persons supporting the addiction model and treatment programs that employ that framing, we look forward to letting them present their reasons and challenge anything offered in this episode.

The only sexual education Nicole Prause had growing up in a small town in Texas was how to practice abstinence. Then she went to college at Indiana University and started working at a sex laboratory at the famed Kinsey Institute. But the subject was still taboo at home. Prause would start talking about her job and her stepmom would say, “Not at the dinner table.” That hush-hush attitude only served to convince the sex researcher and neuroscientist that women learn about sexuality the wrong way – with an emphasis on the risk of pregnancy or STIs, never on sexual pleasure or desire. When a “female Viagra”, called Addyi, was introduced last year to rev up women’s sex drives, it was received with far less enthusiasm than its male counterpart. Mainly it’s because the drug isn’t all that effective: it only helped 10 percent more people than the placebo. The drug also comes with caveats: like not being able to drink alcohol or combine it with other medication. Addyi wasn’t the first attempt to address female libido through medication, and it probably won’t be the last. But Prause is more interested in an element of desire that the drugs can overlook. “If you take a Viagra and your partner is still very unattractive to you, or being mean to you, the Viagra will not be effective,” Prause says. Her mission is not to create a new, more effective drug, but to understand the mechanism of desire. She’s focusing a lot on stimulating the brain to figure out what makes people want to have pleasurable sex. Prause has used several tools to dissect this misunderstood science – from transcranial magnetic stimulation, a much milder shock therapy, to devices like an anal pressure gauge that she designed herself. Nicole Prause uses devices to stimulate sexual pleasure in her studies. (courtesy of California Sunday) And while the scientist is focused on her laboratory, Liberos, she says the conversation around female sexuality needs to shift, especially in heterosexual relationships. Women often sacrifice their own desire to cater to, or “keep up”, with their partners. And men are not on the same wave length. “To continually kind of deny that we have an interest in sexuality and make those demands…you really need to slow down [and communicate],” Prause said. “And then we will have better partners.”
