The Fantasy/Animation podcast is back with a bang thanks to the Mexican superhero caper La mujer murcielago/The Batwoman (René Cardona, 1968), a transnational twist on the famed DC character. Joining Chris and Alex to discuss intellectual property, international adaptation, and the politics of the remake is Dr Iain Robert Smith, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at King's College London. Iain's research focuses on the ways in which material is adapted across different national contexts, including what happens when Hollywood films are remade by (and for) other cultures. These areas were central to his monograph The Hollywood Meme: Transnational Adaptations in World Cinema (EUP, 2016), and developed further in the anthologies Media Across Borders (with Andrea Esser and Miguel Bernal-Merino, Routledge, 2016) and Transnational Film Remakes (with Constantine Verevis, EUP 2017). Topics for this episode include the postwar history of unlicensed remakes; critical approaches to remaking and imitation through strategies of appropriation and localisation; The Batwoman's status as a Mexican lucha libre film; budget filmmaking, non-cinema, and the spectacle of different kinds of visual effects; and what René Cardona's superhero feature has to say about how the industry of the transnational remake helps us make sense of U.S. cultural power and imperialism. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

THERE'S A CHILL UPON THE AIR AS THE WIND CARRIES THE CRIES OF A WEEPING WOMAN. MIS HIJOS! MIS HIJOS! Once upon a time, there was a poor woman who murdered her children after being slighted by her wealthy lover. Or was it an indigenous woman who had her child stolen by colonizers? Or maybe it was an accidental pregnancy that was secretly terminated? However the story goes, the woman died and her ghost now wanders the night in search of new children. To avoid her wailing spirit, take a listen to Gabe and returning guest Kristine Fisher as they talk about movies starring that most popular of Latin American ghosts, La Llorona, including Ramón Peón's La Llorona (1933), René Cardona's La Llorona (1960), Rafael Baledón's The Curse of the Crying Woman (1961), Miguel M. Delgado's Santo and Mantequilla Napoles in The Revenge of the Crying Woman (1973), Rigoberto Castañeda's Kilometer 31 (2006), and Jayro Bustamante's La Llorona (2019). 00:00 – Intro 04:34 – La Llorona (1933) 14:33 – La Llorona (1960) 27:21 – The Curse of the Crying Woman 41:18 – The Revenge of the Crying Woman 57:32 – Kilometer 31 1:15:43 – La Llorona (2019) 1:28:50 – Outro If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid: https://mylegalaid.org/support-our-work/giving Donations 4 Abortions (state by state abortion funds): https://donations4abortion.com/funds-by-state Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund: https://www.transgenderlegal.org/

Call it Los campeones justicieros. Call it The Champions of Justice. Whatever you call Federico Curiel's film, just make sure you call it a fun time, because that's what you'll hear in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Author Frank Schildiner returns to the show to kick off 2018's Lucha de Mayo as he and Derek talk about this idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could. In this case, we need an assembled force of luchadors to fight the evil Dr. Marius Zarkoff in this 1971 film obviously set in a shared cinematic universe. Along the way, Derek (gently) picks Frank's brain about how he researches the period-specific details for his books, they play the Classic Five, and for some reason, 1979's The Frisco Kid (dir. Robert Aldrich) comes up. Also, we have another installment of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and listener feedback with Brenda.
