Send a textWe're back for the first episode of 2026. This week we're back in Books Upstairs in Dublin to interview Hugo Hamilton about his latest novel, Conversation with the Sea. Fleeing his failed marriage in Berlin, Lukas Dorn revisits the West of Ireland, the place of his honeymoon two decades earlier. While his former wife is being cancelled at work and his daughter is arrested at a street protest, he tries to make sense of his broken life with a journal as his sole companion.    His inherited memory of the Nazi Holocaust comes face to face with the present when he meets a refugee from a recent warzone. As Lukas communes with the elements in this wild coastal place, he is forced into a confrontation with the past that will carry him to the edge of existence.    Conversation with the Sea speaks with heart-rending tenderness to the present moment, as it explores truth, illusion and the deadly silencing of war in a captivating tale of love in a time of displacement.  Truly a book for our time' PAUL LYNCH  FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF 'THE SPECKLED PEOPLE'    'Told with Hamilton's signature purity of tone, an epic story about how love and history intersect.' ANNE ENRIGHT'I don't think I've ever read a book as wise, or as moving. I will treasure it forever.' DONAL RYAN'Hypnotic, passionate, urgent … Hamilton cuts a clean line to the truth of our mindless moment.' In this episode, host David Mandell welcomes Dr. Paul Lynch, a double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, entrepreneur, and business leader. Dr. Lynch shares his remarkable journey from aspiring psychiatrist to pain medicine innovator—a shift inspired by his mother-in-law's battle with cancer and the discovery of interventional pain treatments that could transform patients' lives. His early experiences at the Mayo Clinic shaped his belief in comprehensive, integrated care—a philosophy that became the foundation for his first practice, Arizona Pain, which quickly became one of the nation's leading pain management centers. Dr. Lynch details how entrepreneurial thinking, coupled with strategic use of digital tools, drove his success. His story of launching a medical website during fellowship—eventually ranking number one on Google before opening his doors—illustrates how physicians can use education-based marketing to reach patients and grow responsibly. As his career evolved, Dr. Lynch founded U.S. Pain Care, intentionally designed to avoid the mistakes of his first venture. Through introspection and what he calls his "Manifesto of 53 Errors," he now builds companies around lessons learned, focusing on empowering other physicians with ownership, autonomy, and ethical profitability. The discussion also delves into real estate, private equity, and long-term business strategy in medicine. Dr. Lynch explains how owning medical real estate can be one of the most impactful and ethical ways for physicians to build wealth—separate from clinical care—highlighting the benefits of property ownership, long-term leasing, and physician-owned REITs. He closes with advice to doctors: never make fortunes "on the backs of patients." Instead, focus on providing excellent care while building wealth through smart business decisions, integrity, and surrounding yourself with expert advisors in law, finance, and real estate.

In this episode, we unpack how director Paul Lynch crafts suspense through tight pacing, moody lighting, and a creeping sense of inevitability. We explore standout performances by Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen, and how the film balances teen drama with grisly murder. Join us as we trace the threads of Casey Stevens, Eddie Benton, Mary Beth Rubens, Michael Tough, Anne-Marie Martin, and Joy Thompson, uncovering the masked terror that stalks a group of high school friends on prom night. We discuss iconic scenes, the film's influence on the late-70s/early-80s slasher boom, and what makes “Prom Night” endure as a late-night fright favorite.

"The country spoke Irish largely before it spoke English. Grammatically, the structure of Irish is different from English. As Ireland adopted the English language, this sort of hybridization started to occur, where the English language was placed on top of Irish grammatical constructions. You get this slipperiness, this ability to move sentences, to place words in interesting places, and to use constructions that you just wouldn't find in England, for example. The thing about being an Irish writer is there isn't a reverence. There's a sort of implicit freedom to use the language however we like. So long as you have mastery and command of the language, you can push it to the edges."Paul Lynch is the author of five novels. His most recent novel, Prophet Song, won the 2023 Booker Prize and the Dayton Literary Peace Peace Prize for Fiction, and other prizes. Prophet Song presents a dystopian vision of Ireland and a mother's determination to protect her family as her country slides towards totalitarianism. The Booker Prize Jury said, “It's a remarkable accomplishment for a novelist to capture the social and political anxieties of our moment so compellingly.“ In 2024, Lynch was elected to Aosdána, the Irish academy for the arts, honoring distinguished artists. This is what we do. And if you give the brain a story, a prepackaged story, you're giving a cheesecake. That's what it wants. That's why it loves stories. Hello!Thank you for listening to Into the Pray, a podcast akin to a growing library of voice-notes helping disciples of Christ around the world to breach the global chaos of the unfaithful Church...because Christ is coming and we are not ready. Today's special General Election episode of the podcast considers the astonishing book by Paul Lynch, "Prophet Song", winner of the Booker Prize, (2023). You can watch the YouTube version of this podcast here. This is our manifesto. It has been for years. We've talked about it as such. It's the song of the Bible that most of us don't want to sing. But Paul Lynch's "Prophet Song" is a book that carries with it an unregenerate prophetic quality that offers more than entertainment and lyrical prowess. Molly, especially, is a beautiful character that, were I still an English Literature student, I'd write all of my main essays about. PLEASE WATCH/SHARE: Urgent Bible teaching here with all info here.
